Best Guitar Strap Locks (2024 Update)

This is obviously licensed from the schaller design but I think made in a different factory to different quality. I have been using Schaller locks for 20+ years on every instrument I own except my Mandolin. I got a Fender Elite Jazz V that comes with the Fender branded locks from the factory which I thought was great. 2 years later the metal for the end pins on the bass has worn a groove so deep in one side that the lock slips off without pulling the release. Meanwhile my older Fender bass, my super heavy Les Paul and basically all my instruments with aftermarket Schaller branded locks have zero problem of this sort with 20 times the use. The only time I have ever had a problem with this strap lock design is the set of Fender branded ones that came on the Elite Jazz V. I think they are using cheaper materials. Since using these for the first time about 6 years ago, I simply haven't been able to live without them. I generally play guitars that cost over a grand. I never trusted regular strap buttons. I've seen them fail too many times So these things were a godsend. Just buy one set of the strap locks. After that you can just buy the fender buttons at $5 a set and equip every guitar you own. They make switching straps or taking the straps off to put your guitar in a case super easy and secure. But, more importantly, I have never seen a set of these fail and injure an innocent guitar. The only negative thing I will say is the screw on parts (pull pin and nut) can get loose. But a little vigilance (or locktite) can keep those things from being an issueKenneth

Fender Infinity Locks are the real deal. Good looking and tough you don't have sweat whether or not your ax takes an unintentional header at practice or performance.

I have Dunlop StrapLoks and all my electric guitars and I like them a lot. They're very sturdy and stable and simple to install and use. I do prefer the dual-design version (which has a larger shoulder on the button to make using it with a conventional strap more secure) but the original version also works quite well.Marty

These strap locks were easy to install both on the guitar and on the strap. The screws provided are standard size so no drilling is required. The lock mechanism fits perfectly on the strap and is simple to operate. If you want a low profile strap lock system then this is the one for you. I purchased the gold finish to match my guitars hardware.JazzandBluesMan

These appear to be good locks. I haven't had them for a very long time, but no problems yet. Their appearance is nice, probably better than some other strap locks. They feel solid, also. Are they as secure as other locks? That remains to be seen, but so far no problems. I'm not one to toss my guitar over my shoulder, so I can't comment on that usage. I use this system on all my guitars and it's interchangeable. I can change straps or use use cheap ones for practice and switch to custom straps while playing out. The locking system is strong and easily disconnects with a push of a button. Install can be tricky, take your time and drill slowly. Make sure the printed side of strap is facing you as you install the lock, and the release button is also facing you. I use needle-nose pliers, and should take 5-8 minutes. Worth every penny, instead of replacing the headstock, or having a luthier repair it. It will work on worn out straps too. Rock on…. 😎David

I have been using the Dunlop system since they first came out and still have the first set I bought on one of my guitars that I purchased back in the early 1980's. Still works, hasn't failed, hasn't damaged the guitar. I own dozens of guitars now, and have this system on all of them. I don't even look at another system unless its a Rickenbacker, because they have their own special back pin that doesn't work with the Dunlop. I have been using this system live on numerous guitars for decades and have put them through the test with no failures. Just bought another new guitar and what did I buy, a new strap and the Dunlop Straplok System. There is only one pet peeve that I have and that the button barrel is sometimes difficult to get through the strap hole and you have to sometimes enlarge the strap hole to get it to sit right, but I've done it so many times, its a nothing thing for me now, but for someone who hasn't used this system, it is a small learning curve. Periodically you need to spray the pin with compressed air or a very quick shot of WD40 to keep the bearings loose and when I mean periodically, I mean like once or twice a year if that. I've read some reviews that it looks stupid cosmetically when its on the strap or you need to re-drill your guitar. I've never had to do that. I can soap a screw and hand turn it or use the original screws from the pins that the guitar came with. If you are concerned with cosmetics of this system, buy the ones in black. I'm more concerned with the strap staying on and protecting my investment and last I checked we guitarists look at the guitar and what we are playing not how stupid our strap lock system looks. Recently purchased a used 2007 Fender Jazz Bass and I wanted to show her some love so I upgraded the strap buttons to a Dunlop Dual Design Straplok System. Instead of drilling a thicker hole to fit the new Dunlop screw I muscled it in with a screwdriver for what I hope would be a tighter grip and possibly lower the chances of either screw being pulled out during wild movement. It's gripping much better with the new screw, the thin original strap button screw was hardly gripping at all. I have piece of mind when wear my guitar strap, it does not feel like the strap lock system will fail at all. Sturdy and durable so far while I've moved around the room and played. Would recommend this Dunlop strap lock to others. (I am by no means a carpenter nor a luthier so i am not suggesting you follow my trial of using the old hole instead of drilling a wider hole for the new Dunlop screw. I recommend looking to someone with experience for advice. Best of luck. Cheers!)D

First things first: absolutely fantastic set of locks! I got a set of these from my wife (then fiancee) 3 years back to put on my Ibanez 5-string bass, because stock strap buttons won't hold a strap for anything unless you play standing dead still. Installation was pretty much effortless, though I had a little trouble getting the lock itself through holes in brand-new, somewhat-thick leather. Being somewhat-thick, the leather also didn't leave much thread surface for the nut to hang onto, especially with the washer in place. Eventually the nut & washer fell off of the top lock (the lock that attaches to the top horn on the instrument) as I was taking the strap off the bass & I wasn't able to find them. Luckily they weren't critical to the function of the straplock, and I've been rocking it without the nut & washer ever since, with no issues. Honestly, the only thing the nuts & washers do with this particular set of locks is ensure they stay on the strap while it's unattached from the instrument. While it's attached to said instrument however, you'd have to take a hammer to the lock to break it off! To wrap things up, I've used Schaller & Fender Style strap locks, & they didn't keep the strap on near as effective as these do. Won't buy anything else to do the job.EarthquakeGenerator251

So when I’m about to throw down serious heavy breakdowns I need the best. That ol’ 6 string gets swingin’ round pretty hard sometimes. I need to know that my strap locks are up to the task of wrangling a wild axe spinning 1000 rpm around my neck. Once, with my schallers, I sent my ‘59 burst through the wall of a small club in northern Wyoming. Not only did the owner charge me for the 17 beers I had before the show, he charged me for fixing the wall, and 18 more dollars for wrecking his best favorite nascar poster. I had to sell the Gibson to pay for it all. Fast forward to 2020 and I find my self picking up a pristine first act from the yard sale José and Tammy-Jo put on every 4th of July.I spent 30 bucks on that beauty and I can’t possibly recover financially from another disaster like the Lester incident, so I gotta play it safe. I returned beer cans, got 20 bucks, and tried a set of these bad boys based solely on how I felt emotionally on that particular day. So far, I’ve only dropped the new guitar twice, but that had more to do with the 151 my cousin gave me last weekend. I’ve been rocking hard and these things just won’t let me down. The new design is far better than the old one but it still has one major flaw, hence the 4 star rating. The old system used a small, thin nut to hold the entire lock system together and I learned the hard way that after a while this nut would come loose and eventually the system would fail so I nearly dropped one of my basses once when it blew apart onstage. The only way to correct it was either a drop of Lock-Tite or constant vigilance and I disliked having to worry about whether or not I had recently tightened the nut every time I picked up a different bass. I then switched to the Duncan Dual-Design system as it is far more reliable (and is still the only system I give a 5 star rating) but when I bought my new Ibanez EHB1005SMS it came with the new Schaller S locks preinstalled so I decided to give them a whirl. Their new system uses a big, robust wheel instead of a small nut to lock the unit on the strap and is far more reliable than the old system but where it falls short is the micro screw that locks this piece onto the strap. The screw itself is tightened with a flat head screwdriver and is made of very soft, cheap metal and all it takes is one slip to destroy the slot to the point that the only way to get it off again is with a drill. If they were to switch it to a high quality hex nut it would solve the problem but for now I'm sticking to my Duncan locks.Dave H

I've tried several other brands. Dunlops were close but with their design you could accidentally remove the strap. I came back to Schallers. They go on every electric guitar I own. The redesigned S-Locks are even better than the originals. These just will NOT fail. The screw would come out of the guitar way before the strap comes loose from the button. I recently purchased a new Gretsch guitar for my collection. As with all my guitars, I wanted to install strap locks to prevent the possibility of sending this beauty crashing to the floor. I purchased the latest version Schaller S-Locks and couldnt be happier! Installation was simple, easy and only took a few minutes. This new design has a beveled locking pin, allowing straps to be put on without having to retract it first. Another great upgrade is the locks no longer rattle when you move. This is huge if you perform with higher amplification. Schaller locks have always been quality locks, but these are the absolute best! I highly recommend these locks to anyone wanting to enjoy their instruments without the worry of an unfortunate accident destroying your investment.bigd1

I installed this on my new Breedlove and it fit with no problem. Tightened up just fine for a secure fit. Used in conjunction with the reccomended Schaller straplocks. Plenty of room to plug in the guitar cable. Terrific solution for getting a strap on the pesky endpin jacks.Udell

There isn't much to say about this absolutely pitiful product except that it simply does not perform its intended function. The "locking" function doesn't actually lock, you are able to simply slide the cap on or off at will with essentially no friction. This product is an unjustifiable waste of your money, and you risk serious damage to your instrument in trusting these to hold your strap in place.Matt

I got these thinking that they would work as well as the schalers but for about $10 less. Biggest mistake ever. The broke on me constantly during gigs. The ball you pull to unlock it came off, making it nearly impossible to get the strap and locks off my bass. The screws are cheap and bend very easily ( I have the fender aerodyne j bass which is pretty light and they bent). The screws also strip the body of your guitar. I had to refill both of the screw holes for the strap buttons with dowels. The black finish also starts scraping off after one use. The locks also don't stay on the strap and need to be constantly tightened. These have also failed in the middle of a gig (I'm not hard on my gear at all). These were just a waste of money. I would never recommend these. If you want locks that work, get schalers or a dimarzio clip lock strap. I have the dimarzio's and they have not had one single problemZach

I dropped my bass 3 times. I could not figure it out. Finally I figured I either installed them 180 off. Or something else. So I figured out the open end is meant to opposed gravity. Could have been my error so I corrected and tighten nut really tight. Now just dropped bass 2 times luckily I'm standing over my bed. Look at strap locks had shifted 180 degree's. So look at it this way. Guitar center sells fancy rubber washers for under 5 dollars. Or you can go to hardware store. Have not lost a bass on rubber washers. Or you can spend 20 on fauls security. Do not buy Lucky no real harm happened. But it could have.Knuckles

I have a chrome set and a red set on my fenders. The red is really tasteful. They are easy to use and keep my favorite guitars safe. They stick out a lot so the strap has to come off before going in some cases.Brad

Used on my new Telecaster. Very sturdy. Some players may find them bulky; I like the large knobs. They are easy to grasp and they prominently display the iconic F. I really like the quick connect and disconnect.Tim

I installed these on all my guitars. I made the mistake of buying a set of Sch****rs because I didn't want to wait for shipping, they went in the garbage as soon as my Fender strap locks came in. Fender locks don't unlock unless you unlock them…period.michaeturne-65

I have been using the Schaller/Fender strap lock system for about 15 years. I won't mention names, but I have used the others that have a pin that goes inside the peg. They failed and my guitar (an Ovation 12 string) fell onto the tile floor and broke the headstock and the Lyracord body. This design will not let that happen, even if the lock pin fails.fbrosch

These are suppose to be flush, and they are, but the lock sticks out 3/4 of inch, so what did I gang by putting this on my SG? It still sticks out just as far as the other locking button may be farther.applefryer

The strap locks do a good job of holding your guitar onto the straps very securely. They are easy to install and work well with straps that don't have the additional strap locks system on the strap. I put the buttons on all of my guitars.jaegefre

This Schaller style security strap locks may just be even more so better than the actual name brand Strap Locks I normally buy. The color is quite similar to what my guitar has for it's hardware. It looks great. It operates very well. Great investment. Great buying experience. I'd shop here again.samquio0

These work perfectly with my old-style Schaller strap locks (not their fancy new S-locks, although I think I read that they do work with the same buttons). After playing musical straps and buying and selling guitars over the years, I ended up with unused nickel Schaller strap locks, but no buttons (I must have installed them on a guitar that I ended up selling). When you need just the buttons, this is THE solution. Even though they're made by Grover, they look nearly identical to real Schallers (if you look very, very closely you can see that some of the dimensions are just slightly different, but the fit against the strap lock is just fine – no excess wiggle or wobble).Rob

I was pleasantly surprised with the strap, I had actually bought the package for the strap locks and not so much for the strap, once I received it I was very happy with the purchase, the strap is long at 68", it was like buying the strap locks and getting a nice strap for free.Solsurfer

This package rules. It's got your standard straplocks and a really nice strap for my tastes. Thick, smooth seatbelt material, very comfy. LOL at whatever giant person said the strap was too short, I'm tall and hold my guitars quite low and honestly this is BY FAR the longest strap I own. Must've been the dude from Church of Misery or something. Only downside is the same with any dunlop staplocks, you'll almost certainly have to drill out your strap hole in your guitar and even then the screws are difficult to screw in and prone to stripping. Overall super sick value though.Ben

I've got LOTS of money in the most expensive gits out there, so guaranteeing their safety is paramount. I'm certainly happy to pay a fair price for it, and have by putting these Schallers on all of them. I've got gold, nickel, and black. They all seem to hold up very well with the black showing the most wear, BUT, they're on my Gibby 86 V with 84 Shaw's in it, and I work that plank more than most of my Paul's, so….my bad, Schallers good! They'll show wear after 100+ shows, so buy some new ones! The nickels wear the best. I think they're solid.guitarasaweapon

I have used Schaller strap locks for 40 years. They are absolutely reliable. I use them on all of my instruments and will consider no others. On my guitars and my Basses the same applies. No worries, no failures, no loosening, they don't even seem to wear. Go buy some.fingeronstring

Overall: I guess these are meant for very thin straps as mine fell apart and came loose in the middle of a gig. The peice that screws on the outside of the strap, holding it all together, is not threaded very long. I was using them on a leather starp maybe a 1/16 of an inch thick and had them jscrewed on tight with pliers. Just through the normal motions of playing and taking the guitar on and off they worked loose and came apart in the middle of a song. They seem to be made well and of good quality just poor design IMHO.Seneca

Sound: The sound my bass hitting the ground? Or them hitting the liner of the trash can because that's where they're going. Features: Removing the strap is difficult and the retainer doesn't stay on. Quality: Well made but the design is bad. Value: Shouldn't even be given away as a gift. The Wow Factor: Looks interesting but get something better. Overall: Absolutely the worst design. The strap retainer spins off and you're left with just with the tread holding your strap on.Esteban
