For example, page 12 shows Ode to Joy begins in C but it is really E that is shown in the music notation. I picked up the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 book along with the accompanying DVD when I first started playing about 5 years ago and highly recommend it to anyone who is new to playing guitar. This book covers all the basics and the DVD provides a great accompanying visual aid for a better understanding of the lessons. I also recommend getting the Mel Bay books that come after this one (I beleive they go up to grade 7 or 8) as I feel that they moved at a good pace and provided a good foundation for me to build on. The book is somewhat helpful, but is lacking in detailed descriptions. It is almost like those directions you get from Target furniture that have just a picture of what to do with no words..just a drawing of a bunch of nuts and bolts flying in mid air towards particle boards. I felt like that with this book. I needed more explanation than I was getting…maybe because I have zero experience reading music. Overall I found it confusing and the song examples are quite dated. I didn't mind the vintage nature of the learnable songs, but many younger players might.

I kicked around playing guitar in college many years ago with only some tips from my accomplished, guitar playing college roomate. I never developed with the instrument. Many years later I knew I needed help if I was really going to learn how to play. Hal Leonard's book is certainly a challenge for me but it is paying off big-time. I'm learning so much on how to tune, play the guitar, and read music, all for the first time in my life. I found it a challenge at first, but as I discipline my mind and my fingers I am advancing far beyond what I knew in my college days. The book will help you if you match its complexity with an equal amount of determination. But once you learn the first few pages reading music and playing guitar becomes much easier and such a joy. I purchased this book as a reference text for studying country guitar rhythms, riffs and licks. As with all Mel Bay books, it's very complete. The music is written in standard (stave) and tab form and the companion CD makes a nice addition. The only downside, the book is concise. As a prerequisite, to reap the full benefit of the material, it would be very beneficial to have some knowledge of basic music theory. All in all, an excellent book but not for the beginner. On a level of 1(beginning) to 3(advanced), I would rate the book in the 2-3 range – intermediate to advanced guitarist.mr_kludge
