My guitar teacher taught me with this book. It teaches you how to tune your guitar and the proper position in wich to play your guitar. It guides you through basic and big-sounding open chords and strumming/picking techniques. You even begin to cover reading music! That is the music industry music, folks, not just tabs. Not many other "Level 1" books provide that. It is a small, yet very versatile book. Obviously, it can be used as a teaching guide, though I strongly believe it can be a self-instruction book as well. Not sure how to some of the music in the book is correctly notated according to professional musicians or music teachers that recommended it. For example, page 12 shows Ode to Joy begins in C but it is really E that is shown in the music notation. I picked up the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 book along with the accompanying DVD when I first started playing about 5 years ago and highly recommend it to anyone who is new to playing guitar. This book covers all the basics and the DVD provides a great accompanying visual aid for a better understanding of the lessons. I also recommend getting the Mel Bay books that come after this one (I beleive they go up to grade 7 or 8) as I feel that they moved at a good pace and provided a good foundation for me to build on. The book is somewhat helpful, but is lacking in detailed descriptions. It is almost like those directions you get from Target furniture that have just a picture of what to do with no words..just a drawing of a bunch of nuts and bolts flying in mid air towards particle boards. I felt like that with this book. I needed more explanation than I was getting…maybe because I have zero experience reading music. Overall I found it confusing and the song examples are quite dated. I didn't mind the vintage nature of the learnable songs, but many younger players might.

This is a straightforward method book suitable for late primary school students through to adults. It assumes no prior knowledge, so is written for beginners. I only gave this book 4 stars because it isnt in the best condition. However, it is in better condition than I thought it would be, being labeled good. This book has, so far, been a great help. It introduces the basics of reading music for guitar, which is a very needful fundamental. I have been more of a player by-ear and sorta missed the basics of reading. To me the greatest thing about this book is that if you want to read music notation and be able to play it, you can learn it with this book. It goes at a very good pace, teaching you the notes of the staff and where they correlate on the fingerboard. By the time you've finished this book, you should know every note on the fingerboard. I purchased this book as a reference text for studying country guitar rhythms, riffs and licks. As with all Mel Bay books, it's very complete. The music is written in standard (stave) and tab form and the companion CD makes a nice addition. The only downside, the book is concise. As a prerequisite, to reap the full benefit of the material, it would be very beneficial to have some knowledge of basic music theory. All in all, an excellent book but not for the beginner. On a level of 1(beginning) to 3(advanced), I would rate the book in the 2-3 range – intermediate to advanced guitarist.mr_kludge
