I have gotten other ones from Hal Leonard for myself (Greg Koch, Stevie Ray lessons) and also 50 Blues Style Licks and I really like the way that they present things. I received Learn and Master Guitar as a Christmas gift and I've been very disappointed thus far. I've only watched the first 5 DVDs and while the video quality and instructor are nice, this is NOT worth the hefty price tag. In my opinion there are far superior FREE guitar courses online. The Gibson course starts in the weeds IMHO by starts teaching you the names of the notes on the first 3 frets for each string. It also throws some basic music theory (music notation for reading music). While none of this is hard it's boring and really isn't necessary to get somebody started playing guitar. The exercises are boring (Dear Gibson, I didn't pick up a guitar to learn Yankee Doodle, Ode to Joy, or When the Saints Go Marching In, sorry). You don't even get into lessons on basic open chords until 9 weeks into the course (Session 5) which is unfortunate. Had I started with this DVD set I would have quit from boredom. Then when they do start talking open chords they proceed to barf practically every open chord at you at once as if to say, "here you go, memorize these fingerings and you'll be good". I haven't seen any discussion about strategies to teach students how to change chords quickly which is one of, if not the biggest challenge for beginners. Contrast that with some of the popular guitar teachers online who do a better job of getting you playing some real tunes as fast as possible (Stage 1 in one of the best courses I found online teaches you D, A, and E chords which you can find in tons of popular songs). To me doing something fun with the guitar in the early stages is key to having people stick with it. For example with one of the online programs I learned some Bob Marley (Three Little Birds) and Elvis (Hound Dog) right off the bat! Obviously I'm going out of my way here to not mention names of those guys online who teach for free but I just found that Gibson missed the mark here.
I have been playing guitar for over 40 years on and off. My guitar playing plateaued long ago after writing my own songs. I say writing but they are just in my head. I can teach them to you but I can't tell you about the music. This course is teaching me to tell about the music. I always wanted to know how to read music. After just a few weeks I can sight read for the first, third, fifth and seventh position. Of course I extrapolate on the ideas I am taught because despite starting at the beginning I am still an advanced player. This course lends itself well to the advanced player. This course offers an excellent musical education. Ive been playing for more than 40 years and am only now learning to read music. This course is teaching an old dog some new tricks! This course covers it all. It covers all of the knowlege needed to read and understand music. The course gives you a priceless ability to read and understand music. I can't begin to tell you how much it means to be able to look at a piece of music and know what it's telling.
The topics covered can easily allow a complete novice to get up to the level of competent player in about 6-8 months, depending on the individual. Inside of the first month, you will learn to read music in first position, and you'll continuously learn music theory. At about the half-way through point, you'll learn finger-picking techniques, then move on through different genres. I had several years of lessons and studied music seriously for 2 years, and this really solidifies a lot of concepts for me and very clearly explains the basics which I never fully grasped. What's also nice is that there are additional bonus videos which explain some of the Gibson history and manufacturing techniques, so that as you learn to play you get exposure to some other guitar knowledge as well. All in all, for the money, it's the best organized and produced video training tool I've seen in over 20 years of playing. I bought this to help me become a better teacher, and I will gladly recommend it to anyone I teach!Pascal_h

It was a surprise when the 100's of songs you were surpose to get were just the titals to songs. No sheet music to go with the song he tell you to look up.. In the cd 4 of the days he says " for todays leason play some of the songs on the list" ,but if you don't have the sheet music how can you play those songs. That was VERY disapointing to me. If the cd doesnot have what it says it does , isn't that a bad ad ?

I bought this when I first started learning how to play. It teaches you all of the basics and some really cool riffs and solos. The video is broken down into sections. The first talks about all of the notes on the neck and basic chords and power chords. The other sections shows you how to play different styles like blues, country, rock, ect. The lessons are excellent and very easy to understand. I learned a lot of cool riffs watching this video and it also taught me some cool solos. I bought this DVD last year-and it taught me a lot. In only minutes, I was playing three or four chords and making simple songs from them. The lessons do tend to jump around somewhat, but if you take your time and learn the lessons in order, you will be playing in no time. I especially liked the tour of the Fender plant in Corona,Ca. Keith Wyatt also shows how to take care of your guitar and change the strings properly.Another interesting part is where he demonstrates distortion and a few pedal effects. Overall, I think this is a great DVD to start guitar with. There are a lot of different pages and chapters to explore at your own pace, without a teacher breathing down your neck. It's a keeper. Joe Walsh is at his best in this info dvd. I happen to know Joe in real life , and he really does know his stuff. He helped out my old Guild with just a couple simple techiques shown in this dvd. It does make a difference, and the changes you make in neck adjustments are" subtle", if you learn nothing else just that may save a big mistake. His tuning section and slide mystery busters are tips that make playing slide seem hopeful for the rest of us. There are probably better "show and tells " out there but not as much fun as this one.
