If you are a guitarist, this is the fake book you need. Forget about The Real Book. That was written for horn players. A guitarist needs to get done into the nitty gritty of the actual chords of the song, and that is what this book does. You can follow the structure, and choose which of your own substitute chords you want to use. After all, most jazz guitarists use their own favorite substitute chords for the ones written on the sheet music. Could this book be improved? This is better than a lot of fake books but I believe the Real Book is a better option. This one has diagrams for guitar chord changes but in many cases they are not the best options. A little thought and the guitarist can easily come up with better ones. For instance, often where a chord is the same for more than a single measure only a single chord inversion will be given. In practise most guitarists would try to keep the progression moving, break up these sections with substitutions etc. Accordingly I don't find the chord diagrams to be of much use to the serious guitarist. They actually clutter the page. On the plus side I did find this to be a fairly accurate book and the songs are shown in the keys they are most often performed in. On a gig however – which is where fake books are really handy – you will still need The Real Book as that is pretty much the industry standard.Harry

I have been playing for 15 years and teaching guitar for over a year, and this book really sticks out as my favorite. Why? It has a fun selection of music with more rock and pop type of music than most, plus most of your older beginner classics. Most of the other books teach old folk music, etc. which always seemed lame to me. Plus, it has a fun and cheerful writing style and good illustrations. It has a logical progression from note reading melodies, and as the dexterity increase over time, it starts adding chords, plus the rock power chords which most leave out. I recommend getting the one with the CD to help figure out a few of the tricky tunes included, but most are really logical and easy to figure out. Most of all, find a local guitar teacher to help you put it all together and to keep you from developing bad habits, and to have a routine to help you get through that first year. Also, have an experienced musician help you pick out a decent guitar; there is so much awful sounding junk out there these days that will make a real musician want to quit, but do the best you can if that is all you have, and start saving up. Play on the tips of your fingers and keep the thumb behind the neck to develop good playing techniques that will be important later on as you progress. Get thebook; it's as good as they come!zzz333

This is my third 'Ultimate Fake Book – 1200 songs'. One is in C, another Eb and now Bb. I play numerous saxophones and flute, so the transposed books enable me to play while someone else in the family is on piano, guitar, etc. The book is well laid out, and easy to read. Chords are accurate!!! This is an extremely important feature. I recommend this.msackett2012
Many nice songs. Because there are so many songs, especially combined with "The Best Fake Book Ever", improving sight reading skills becomes a continuous experience in that it would take a few weeks before playing the same song again.GeorgeD
