Product Details:
A guitar-playing practice guide with hundreds of warm-up and technique-building exercises if you already play some guitar but need some practice, you’re in the right place. guitar exercises for dummies is a friendly guide that provides just enough need-to-know information about practicing scales, chords, and arpeggios in the context of specific skills and techniques to help you maximize its 400+ exercises and improve your guitar playing. this practical book starts off with warm-up exercises (on and off-instrument) and then logically transitions to scales, scale sequences, arpeggios, arpeggio sequences, and chords, with a focus on building strength and consistency as well as refining technique. each section helps you to practice correct hand and body posture and experience variations, such as fingering options and hand positions, and then ends with a brief musical piece for you to try. you can also practice incorporating other facets of musical performance in your exercises, such as: tempo time signature phrasing dynamics the book wraps up with tips to help you maximize your practice time (like setting goals for each session), ways to improve your musicianship (such as studying other performers’ body language), and an appendix that explains the accompanying website (where you can find audio tracks and additional information). grab your guitar, grab a copy of guitar exercises for dummies, and start perfecting your finger picking today. p.s. if you think this book seems familiar, you're probably right. the dummies team updated the cover and design to give the book a fresh feel, but the content is the same as the previous release of guitar exercises for dummies (9780470387665). the book you see here shouldn't be considered a new or updated product.

This is a super resource for learning beginner scales and arpeggios and getting to grips with playing in these keys by having short pieces/studies alongside them. I would have liked to have seen it extended to include two octaves within the book too to have received a 5-star recommendation but still is a very good buy – highly recommended!Debby J

5. Fundamentals Of Guitar: A Workbook For Beginning, Intermediate, Or Advanced Students [Book]
Product Details:
This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. it is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. it then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. this is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in symmetrical picking, a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. the focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. it is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. the study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. this begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. the book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. plain english is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak english or prefer to think visually. this approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. the main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. the amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. for this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player could do, rather than what the player should do. the principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. the ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. pick and choose the studies that seem interesting – there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. if any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

Reviews:
The repetitive drills featured in this book are very good for the intermediate or advanced guitarist but would be very frustrating for a true beginner. The early drills are very hard to do at high speeds for me and I am an advanced beginner. The CDs are practically useless for me as I must play the whole weeks worth of drills rather then being able to play each days drill seperately. Being able to play a daily drill seperately would vastly improve it's usability.wnp

My guitar teacher taught me with this book. It teaches you how to tune your guitar and the proper position in wich to play your guitar. It guides you through basic and big-sounding open chords and strumming/picking techniques. You even begin to cover reading music! That is the music industry music, folks, not just tabs. Not many other "Level 1" books provide that. It is a small, yet very versatile book. Obviously, it can be used as a teaching guide, though I strongly believe it can be a self-instruction book as well. The instructions are clear and they give you some popular songs to play to keep you motivated.NilGuitar
Not sure how to some of the music in the book is correctly notated according to professional musicians or music teachers that recommended it. For example, page 12 shows Ode to Joy begins in C but it is really E that is shown in the music notation. Hal Leonard Books have been around for years but this is the first copy I have ever owned where the music lesson read improperly.Relearning Classical Guitar

Reviews:
I've borrowed this book in the past and liked it, I felt guilty about having a borrowed copy so bad I finally bought my own copy and I'm glad I did. There is no one to practice with or have as a mentor for a beginner and as a sounding board (no pun intended) for me during this Covid-19 Pandemic, but I'm managing on my own. I just need to practice, practice, practice!dmbo_32
Background I have never had a music lesson (beyond school) but I can (just about) play a tune on piano by ear (with limited success but still get enjoyment from doing so). Nort can I read music. Becoming a virtuoso ain't gonna happen! I've had my guitar for over twenty years (again NO LESSONS) but have decided to try to learn to play better. Dummies review So far, this "How To" book gets my vote because it is well written without too much emphasis on classical music notation. I am still reading/absorbing it (slowly); so my opinion is changing as I progress. Learning guitar or any instrument (or, for that matter, any physical and mental activity) from a book alone is never going to be easy but I feel this book is a great first step. The concommitant videos are a complete bonus. My inability to play guitar won't be down to the book 😉monty969

Reviews:
I like the fact Troy breaks things down and actually shows the student how to actually practice the stuff, which is something that is sorely missing in most "so called" method books. A bunch of licks n exercises is one thing but actually showing you how to break down the mechanics of what one is doing is another. Plus he advocates use of the Metronome and actually discusses how and WHY to use it.clittlern1
likes: w/ a little practice you can get Results in your guitar playing. i like how each sample is taken at different tempos. The book is also well structured and focuses on key areas that a guitarist might encounter (i.e. bends, sweeps, ear training, etc). dislikes: the examples aren't separated by cd tracks like in other instructional books, instead each track has several examples in them which is kind of a pain if youre trying out an example (in the middle of a track) and then you want to rewind but you end up in the beginning of the track. Final note: aside from the cd track problem, this book good to have as an instructional tool and puts a great great deal of emphasis on the key areas of guitar playing, err…i mean, guitar shredding!!! I, myself have 2 copies of this book (why? i dont know) and have recommended it every guitarist i know that aim to better their guitar skills.jfabros82
Like how examples were relevant. If u needed to work on trills or hammer ons or finger independence everything they're all there. Not to mention a bit of music writing and heaps of right hand stuff as well. As for the cd issue, well say exercises 1-5 are on one track, thats because they all focus on finger independence. if u hate that just use the pc windows media player lol.mbang2

I play full time and this has changed my perspective about guitar playing and music, and I have gained heaps and still am from Guthrie's insights that have taken him a lifetime to aquire- i picked them up straight from reading and using what's in this book!
