I always hated the noise of roundwound strings, but I admit that nickel plated flatwound are not suitable for most genres. If you like the smoothness of flatwounds but you're not Pat Martino and still need some harmonics above your fundamental tone, these are the strings for you. In short, these strings have good output, a (not overly) bright tone, they do not oxidize easily and are suitable for those people allergic to nickel. They are not the cheapest strings on the market, but keep in mind that they will last more than common pure nickel or nickel plated strings. Another note: even if I got a super light gauge (9-42) the high E seems to have a good resistance to bending and does not snap easily like most of the other strings I tried.
I've tried many different flatwound strings, including the expensive Infeld, Mangans, and the always great D'addario Chromes. I have to say that these are every bit as good as those I mentioned, with a much nicer price! If you are looking for Flats in lighter gauges, definitely give these GHS strings a try!shovelheadsam66

So I have this "practice Axe" that I use to save fret wear on my expensive guitars, I got a cheap used Squire Strat (HSS) and since it set up just the way I like it I play it most. My first set of these CM flatwound 9-42 was a NOTICABLE improvement in tone to the point that I can now say this guitar has its own "voice". I'm a blues/funk/rock player and I can hear the frequency of the notes clearer so I bend to just the right vibration. I purchased these Curt Mangan strings because the Thomastic-Infeld Jazz Swings that I usually use were out of stock. The CM stings are somewhat less expensive that the T-I strings, but are more expensive than many other brands of flat wound strings. The CM strings sound good and are well balanced. They have a brighter sound than other flat wound strings that I have used. The packaging says they have a "smooth, silky feel". I disagree, compared to other flat wound strings, especially T-I and D'Addario Chromes ,which are silky smooth, the CMs are somewhat rough.ras1500

Overall: Tried these out on a Gretsch Pro Jet and the combination was a game changer for me. Took a minute to get used to the feeling, but now I won’t play anything else on that guitar. Rich, warm tone with a fair amount of sparkle. Especially good for jazz chording and rhythm playing. The price is made up for in longevity. These strings sound great after weeks of heavy use.
D'adddario are quality strings.I have used TI in the past. and DR flatwound. The TI swing 12's were great sounding but expensive. The DR flatwound 11's were good also . I prefer the gauge on the Dr 11's. Recently I went back to the Daddario chromes. To get the guage I wanted I purchased Chromes 10's, replaced the 1'st string with an 11 and the 3rd with a 22.(Equivalent to the DR 11's) At this time they sound great. Quality sounding strings and the price is not bad compared to TI and DR. I have also used the Chromes 11's, but have found the gauges in this pack to be a little heavier than what I was used to. I'll probably stick to Chromes 10 and replace the first with an 11 and third with a 22, As far as tone the Chromes are brighter than the DR. I began a renewed interest in learning some of the older sounds I heard as a kid, so decided to try these on a Stratocaster. D'Addario is a great string and I am looking forward to the experience… my only complaint is that Musicians Friend does not carry the Ultra light set in 9 gauge which I would prefer on the Strat. I went through several different brands and gauges when I began experimenting with flatwound strings several years ago. I settled on Thomastik Infeld as the best brand and this as the best gauge for my needs. This brand is definitely worth paying more for if you want to play with flats. I have had the same set on my primary guitar for more than 3 years and I really didn't even need to change them yet when I bought these ones. I use them on my ES-175. I have Seth Lover pickups, which are a bit brighter compared with Gibson pickups so I needed really dark sounding strings. These strings do the work very well. The strings are very well balanced. In fact, I don't think I have ever experienced more balanced strings than these. Yes, they are very expensive; however, the touch is fantastic and the sound is amazing. For my ears, they last for a bit more than 2 weeks before the sound goes away… however, if someone is playing a lot solos, one can keep 'em longer. They will actually sound a bit darker when they get old on solos but the sound on chords will lose its definition.Loopio
I have always played D'Addario Chromes on my Ibanez AF155 and have always tweaked for the tone that I could never find… hours of tweaking! (I have actually considered selling the guitar for this reason.) After some investigation, I tried a set of these strings and can not believe the difference. Instead of tweaking to find an acceptable tone, I play guitar. Wonderful classic warm jazz tone with your tone pots on the low end to an almost "acoustic guitar full" as you set the tone pot higher. The tone is rich and full. The feel is much smoother than the Chromes, they feel great. The strings are more consistent in output from string to string. A good sounding set. But if you are putting this set on a short scale Rickenbacker 325, be aware. I was bending an end of the high E string 0.13 to create an acute angle to hook onto the tremolo bar.The end ball popped out of the string loop. It was difficult to put it back together. I think it's a design flaw. The high E string had a too much slack around the ball end. I would give it a few more turns on high E ball end before I start making a sharp hook again.hkat2310

As described on the package, these are primarily jazz guitar strings. I play a Benedetto Manhattan Custom 7 that was originally strung with round-wound 12-72 strings. After going through a few sets, I was looking for a slightly lighter feel and mellower sound. The typical 7-string sets with unwound third strings and lowest strings in the 50s felt like rubber bands and did not produce the sound I wanted. D'Addario chrome flat wound strings have the sound I want while allowing a relatively low action without buzzing. The strings start out mellow and hold their tone throughout most of their life. They will eventually sound dull (not necessarily a bad thing – listen to Tal Farlow). When intonation begins to suffer, it's time to replace them. I do not recall breaking a string. The majority of my playing is finger-style in the George Van Eps tradition and these strings are great for that application as well as comping and single-string work. They sound great purely acoustically as well as amplified. If bending notes is a major feature of your style, you probably will not be happy with these strings. If you are fortunate enough to own a seven-string jazz guitar and want a classic jazz sound, these strings will suit your instrument and style of playing quite well. They are practically the only game in town unless you prefer piecing together sets from individual strings.Mike H
These strings have proven to be the best on the market. Flatwounds are the most under-rated string ever, and D'addario chromes are the best of the best. They are very warm, very mellow, so if you play extreme metal like I do, you will have to tweak your pre-eq tone a bit to get the same "bright" sound from roundwound strings, but this is easily achieved with a treble booster or a pre eq with some of the bass turned down a little and some mids and highs turnd up a little. Once you've done that, these strings are RAZOR SHARP and virtually all string chirp is eliminated. They're "tighter" feeling than rounds so they stay put when you're tremolo picking. If you want to do artificial harmonics, they work well on these strings, but you have to be precise. Also, pick slides work well, but they're a bit "softer" sounding than on rounds… The few adjustments you have to make in your tone to compensate is a very small price to pay for a string that lasts forever, cleans up your sound, and eliminates string chirp… I recommend these to every guitar player I know.Manos
I bought these seven strings for a six string guitar 'cause they were the only ones I could find flat wound and not for a bass. I was concerned that the tone would be flat too, but it's not they sound warm and mellow, perfect for jazz and classic rock and blues. I can finally make the slides in "Blackbird" sound right. I put them on my new semi-hollow body Hagstrom guitar that has this amazing fret board made out of a man made wood composite that is practically friction free. I Love Rhythm and blues, jazz and swing. But I also like folk music and great C&W riff lines. To be honest, I have only been using these strings for about three weeks but I like them so much that I plan to use them on most of my instruments. So far, In my opinion, these strings are clean and crisp and they have a very satisfying tone even at higher volumes; and, at the present time, they appear to be pretty flex-able and easy on the fingers. I have a used 2005 hollowbody Cort Yorktown. I tried D'Addario ECG23 (10-48 "chromes" flatwounds). They were nice, but for this guitar, they were too bright, at least on the treble strings. I put on these DR flatwounds (11-48) and immediately heard the difference. The tone was mellower, including (especially!) on the treble strings. Don't ask me why. After all, the high E is just .001 inch heavier, but the consistent softened jazz sound was there, from low end to high end. Guitars differ in variables (woods, pickups, etc), so all I can say is that for my guitar (laminate maple back and sides, laminate spruce top and original humbuckers), DR 11-48 flatwounds did the trick. Will stick with these from now on. (By the way, both brands have a wound 3rd string, but DR's is 22 instead of 20. Go figure!) At one point, I was even thinking of replacing the neck pickup. I love the fat sound of the heavy strings best but, I am a smaller player, use a versatile Gibson ES 345 and find the lighter strings work best for me for that purpose. I've only had them a few weeks, but I'm more than pleased. Previously I had flat wounds for about half the price which I consider to be garbage. I just love the rich sound and ease of playing. These strings lasted me a good 3 years throughout my college Jazz ensemble class. Never had the need to change them, they still retain its tone after 3 years!! and honestly Im okay with that cause over the years as they grow old the better it sounds than fresh out the pack. Although I do have to warn that these strings will feel a bit grabby once theyre set and if you have hairy arms/forearms enjoy the strings pulling your arm hairs. I purchased these as spares because the price was too good to pass up. I have these on an Ibanez with a stupidly thin neck. These super light gauge are the only flats that don't warp the neck and trash the fretting. I was looking for a new sets of flats for my Gretsch G5440 Hollow bass and decided to try those out mostly because of the overall good reviews I read. I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed when I tried them for the first time. The set felt not very well balanced and the resulting tone was uneven but after just a couple of hours of playing, everything came in to place and now they sound just like I was hopping it would. So if you go with the Rotosound Jazz 77, play them for a while and be patient, they will reward you with even and oh sooo smooth tone and feel! Worth noting is the fact that those strings have a little bit less output volume compared to standard roundwounds, but not so much that it's a problem. Just turn up the amp! Thanks for reading!Fred

These strings are probably the closest thing to vintage strings available if you are into that old school 50s jazz sound. They are a bit stout for my hands even when set low, but no question they have great tone. Big and deep with a nice brightness to them. Check out some old records to hear that sound. Many jazzers like Mundell Lowe, Barry Galbraith and George Barnes were not playing the dark and rolled off sort of sound we associate with jazz now. These strings remind me of those aforementioned sounds the most. They aren't perfectly polished smooth but I think that is part of their sound.Aaron
These flat wound strings are pretty light as far as flats go but I really like them. I put them on one of my Fender Jaguars and I love the tone. I will say you should probably stretch these a good bit before regularly playing them but either way they're great and are very good quality as expected with Pyramid strings. For my jag, it really mellowed that super sharp brightness just enough to where I like it. I mostly play the Jag on the neck pickup anyways.Antonio

They had been laying around a couple of weeks and I no longer had the receipt so I didn't even try to return the opened package. I'm a gigging bassist who usually prefers roundwounds. I have them on all of my basses, including a 4-string fretless. We rehearse at 3 or more times a week, and I practice about 2 hours a day on technique and music theory/improvisation. As would be expected, at some point my fingers shout "STOP!" I recently strung these on my J-bass (which is my go-to baby) and I have to tell you that there is NO appreciable difference–other than price LOL!–between the sound of these and well-known roundwounds. In fact, I replaced a set of nice Rotosound 66's–my favorite for roundwounds–with these and, shut the front door Beethoven, I actually PREFER this sound of these Slinky flatwounds. FWIW I asked our lead guitarist/band leader how he liked the sound of the bass: he said of course, he always did. I put them on an old Jazz Bass and I'll be darned, now it sounds more like a P Bass lol. Feel amazing on the fingertips. Nice smooth sound. Takes away that plucky, string-noise thing from a Jazz Bass (unless you want that sort of thing, of course). I have been using them for many years, I previously used D'Addario which are also great, but for me the Fenders are the best flatwound string available. I like ML, 50-100. I don't like thin trebly G strings or thick flubby Es so the closer gauges suit me. I use them on a Maton JB4 1980 fretless and a Maton JB4 2013 fretted reissue and they suit both. Ta lots for being the only place in Oz to have a set. The attached photo shows my JB4 with a well-worn set of 9050MLs at work in the Adelaide Fringe in 2017.Dave T
Where to begin with these? The price? Very reasonable for flats. The quality? D'Adario makes these so it's as good as it gets really. The sound? Glorious. These things have a bit of growl, plenty of punch, and are quite round for flats. However they still have the huge fundemental of flats. I have used Chromes, these are totally different and way better. For the record I don't like Chromes; these are my favorite string. It's hard to really place them, I'd say they walk a nice balance between a modern string like the EB Cobalts (which sound thinner and almost plasticy on the high end but are undeniably very roundwound like) and LaBellas which I'd call a more thumpy string. All that said I've only used EB Cobalts, LaBella, and 9050MLs for about 3 months. None of them have had major sound changes, though my LaBellas are dealing with a really bad nut on my Jazz bass that's effected the balance of their sound. And finally the feel? Yup. They feel like flats. Perhaps a bit sticky at first but that wears off and then it's just real nice, smooth wire. Tension is perfectly fine, I prefer higher tension strings and find these adequate but wouldn't complain with a bit more. So really in the end I guess I'm saying if you want a great string that gives all the brightness you'd ever need in a band but without all that awful string noise and flab of rounds get these. If you want to get funky they will, but if you're into that huge thump LaBellas are where you need to look.guitardict

I put these on a modified Jaguar-styled guitar with P-90's. These TI's were a higher gauge than I normally use (.09's in round-wound), so adjustments to the whammy were necessary, no problem. Slightly quieter than round-wounds (so I raised the neck pickup a bit). These strings have a great tone, crank the reverb and go surfin'. I've been playing guitar for over 20 years. On my solid bodies I use D'Addario nickel wound 10s. I even use them for my Semi-hollow bodies. I've never really liked flatwound strings so I just put some 11s on those.. I acquired a couple of spruce top guitars and put D'Addario flatwounds on them. I liked the feel but the sound wasn't quite what I wanted. I read that George Benson used his own set of Thomastiks. I thought they were a little expensive so I was hesitant. Curiosity finally got the best of me so I bought a set of flatwound 11s. Put them on my Epiphone Broadway. They felt and sounded so great I ordered another set and put them on an Eastman AR810-CE. These strings caused both guitars to project so much more acoustically that I can not play the Eastman at night while others are sleeping unless I use my thumb!! I have been playing guitars for over 40 yrs. These are the best strings I have ever used both on my hollow bodies and solid body guitars. I would recommend that if you are a novice or a professional musician invest your money in a good set of Thomastik-Infeld guitar strings, the sound you will received is so sweet and mellow when you want it but crank up that amp and you will be pleasantly surprised to hear that heavy metal sound. Try all of Thomastik-Infeld strings and see which ones are for you.
