GREAT COMPANY, RECEIVED AS ADVERTISED!!!bab-jame
I have been playing for 15 years and teaching guitar for over a year, and this book really sticks out as my favorite. Why? It has a fun selection of music with more rock and pop type of music than most, plus most of your older beginner classics. Most of the other books teach old folk music, etc. which always seemed lame to me. Plus, it has a fun and cheerful writing style and good illustrations. It has a logical progression from note reading melodies, and as the dexterity increase over time, it starts adding chords, plus the rock power chords which most leave out. I recommend getting the one with the CD to help figure out a few of the tricky tunes included, but most are really logical and easy to figure out. Most of all, find a local guitar teacher to help you put it all together and to keep you from developing bad habits, and to have a routine to help you get through that first year. Also, have an experienced musician help you pick out a decent guitar; there is so much awful sounding junk out there these days that will make a real musician want to quit, but do the best you can if that is all you have, and start saving up. Play on the tips of your fingers and keep the thumb behind the neck to develop good playing techniques that will be important later on as you progress. Get thebook; it's as good as they come!zzz333
A lot of beginner's start with the chords or go for tabs. I needed to know how to read the notes. This books teaches a little lead but it mostly teaches how to read notes and how strings interact with them. Recommended for analytical minds.dracosmith05

i dont mind buying a used copy but this was a ripoff. The original 3 volumes has 424 pages, this one has 127 pages (only volume 1) and they are photocopies. Not happy! I was deceivedchrisnatana
This book (levels 1-3) is like a couple years of college level training. However, there are too many duet pieces which is crazy if you are learning by yourself. Therefore, you need to supplement with other materials. As far as theory and technique goes this book is hard to beat.jayafink
The kind of book that I have been looking to find for years. After reading many instructional guitar books and often finding the material not practical and draining, this book finally provided the tools necessary to improve my abilities through practical exercises and intuitive design . A very good book for sight-reading (starting from the bare basics) which is detrimental for any serious musician. The Unscholarly Scholar

I have just about every book published on lutherie, and only bought this one simply to add to the collection, not expecting it to contain anything that wasn't already covered in all the other books. I was pleasantly surprised. It really does cover and explain design concepts and considerations that are for the most part only glossed over in the other books. It won't walk you through a build like a lot of books, but it will give you a good understanding of what contributes to a successful design, both aesthetically and practically. I would recommend it.jaysonmills

Reviews:
This is another great Rock House product. If you're looking to learn to play some Hard Rock/Metal guitar, then you've come to the right place. John McCarthy provides easy to understand lessons that build on each other all the while cover basic techniques needed to play this style of guitar. The onscreen instruction is easy to follow. The included booklet helps you visualize the material from a second perspective. The ability to replay the lessons over and over until I was comfortable with moving on has been an invaluable experience for me. I took my time going through the disk and couldn't be happier with the results! This title is very similar to the Beginner Rock Guitar DVD. There are some differences tuned more towards faster playing exercises. So if you're trying to decide which one to get, think about what style of music you want to play most.Becjr
This is a great beginners learning tool. The DVD explains each exercise fully and the booklet can be used in it's place once one becomes familiar with the material. There are a few flaws in the booklet, namely in the "Reading Chord Charts" section it states how to read the chord diagram but it is explained backwards. The first vertical line on the far left of the chart represents the sixth string or thickest, not the first string or thinnest. Also, in the "Minor Pentatonic Scales" section in the "Key of A, Second Position" the tab is listed correctly on the way down but on the way up it is misprinted. On the fourth and fifth strings the tab should read 10-7 instead of 9-7 so the tabs match on each side. This DVD comes with membership to rockhousemethod.com where additional tools are offered. The backing tracks to many exercises are available to download from the site. To me the backing track for "The Gallop" does not match the tab listed in the booklet, so be prepared to improvise. With these few flaws set aside, this is a solid product.Jimbo24682

After introducing individual concepts slowly enough for a beginner to follow, Keith Wyatt then adds it all together and turns up the speed. My daughter and I should get many, many hours of practice from this DVD, building on the examples and principles that Keith introduces. The lessons are laid out in a very logical manner.Father and Daughter
I bought this DVD last year-and it taught me a lot. In only minutes, I was playing three or four chords and making simple songs from them. The lessons do tend to jump around somewhat, but if you take your time and learn the lessons in order, you will be playing in no time. I especially liked the tour of the Fender plant in Corona,Ca. Keith Wyatt also shows how to take care of your guitar and change the strings properly.Another interesting part is where he demonstrates distortion and a few pedal effects. Overall, I think this is a great DVD to start guitar with. There are a lot of different pages and chapters to explore at your own pace, without a teacher breathing down your neck. The practice tracks are really effective for learning the different chords and how to put them together. Highly recommended.Timmy The Rodfather
I really did not intend to write a review, but when I went to buy this DVD the only user review showing rated it 1 in every box. My experience was much better. I have been playing for a while, and have had lessons from a very good teacher, but the value of a good DVD is much more than you get from even the best lessons. The DVD has a road map that you need to look at a few times to make sense of what you have, but many of the lessons can be practiced with included practice tracks that repea until you get tired or learn how to follow it along. There are 50 short lessons on the DVD,so it can seem like it jumps around a bit, but the layout means you can look at the map and locate a secction you liked. One reviewer complained about Keith Wyatt's fingering but that is so much bs, people's hand shapes vary a lot, and what works for someone may be impossible for another, also I use different shapes (as a lot of people do) depending on what comes next, or if I want it to "ring". Some shapes are fast and dirty. This is a great value in a DVD.Cropper fan
