Best Concert Acoustic Guitar (Jan 2023 Update)

Good sound and feel, especially for the price. I honestly really enjoyed playing this guitar. However, it is quite disappointing that the craftsmanship was lacking, since I always took great care with handling it, and the bridge snapped in half. I was using it very often, so it may be best for beginners or for only periodic use.Nick

I bought this guitar because it was the cheapest acoustic in the store and I wasn't sure I'd stick with playing. I have had so much fun with it a year later I feel compelled to write a review! This guitar looks, feels, and sounds great, and mine rarely needs a tune-up despite regular use. Folks are saying the action is too high but I haven't noticed (and as a newbie maybe that's helped me build finger strength more quickly, who knows.) The only con I can think of is the sound is a tiny bit thin, but for a casual player like myself, that's no big issue. I have always had trouble with guitars. My hands are small and not very strong, so I've never had good luck trying to get good, consistent sound out of a guitar. It's just been too frustrating for me to continue. I also have a hard time feeling comfortable with the size and shape of most guitars I've tried. I've got limited funds to invest in an instrument and I wanted to make sure it was going to be an instrument that would let me play the things I wanted to play, and give me the range I was looking for. I've looked at banjos, classical guitars, and even junior guitars. But I always came back to the acoustic guitar in terms of sound and range. So when this guitar went on sale, I took the plunge and placed the order (after watching numerous video reviews, of course). I couldn't be happier! This is a gorgeous guitar that feels great, and it doesn't take much pressure at all to get a beautiful sound from it. It is wonderfully constructed. I had mine shipped to the store, which may have protected it. Either way, I didn't experience any of the construction issues I read in some of the other reviews, but also I was confident in the purchase guarantee of Guitar Center, and I knew I would have received a replacement if anything was wrong. It's definitely why I purchase through Guitar Center. Now I'm so excited about playing this guitar that I practice twice a day because it's so much fun and it sounds so great. As a new player, I simply couldn't be happier about this purchase. The onboard tuner makes it very easy to tune quickly. When I first tuned it, I used my Super Snark tuner to check the accuracy and they both matched exactly. I also purchased the Fender 20 watt amp and plugged it in. Wow! What a fun set-up! I just bought a Taylor 22e and I love it. It's super playable and the arm bevel and small body size makes it super comfortable to hold. The short scale makes the action easy. The solid walnut top sounds warm like mahogany with a typical Taylor bright top end. Beautiful guitar, highly recommend!John

This is a brilliant guitar, perfect for a beginner as their first,or for someone more experienced wanting to add to their collection.The stock strings have a nice feel and tone, which was a nice surprise. The low end is ballsy, yet also rich and velvety. The high end perfectly balances that richness with a sweet tone; a combination that lends itself to versatility of styles.Aesthetically, this beauty looks amazing despite the simplicity of it being all black. I bought this to match my dad's black Fender acoustic that got wet when our house flooded in '93. He passed away 15 years ago and I just started playing last spring when my son bought a acoustic at a garage sale. I love how light this guitar feels and it sounds and looks awesome! Overall: So, I have owned this guitar for several months now. It is without a doubt a very good sounding guitar, it's up there with my Gibson's and Martins. Strumming or finger picking it just sounds amazing. I did not love the string spacing, so I replaced the nut with a bit wider spacing for my style of playing. The whole point about me taking the plunge on this guitar was that it was all solid woods, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and one of Yamahas absolute best acoustics available. I have no regrets buying this guitar at all. My friends are amazed at the beauty and sound of this very well-built guitar. The electronics do a good job plugged into the PA for playing live, and it will amaze you how good it sounds unplugged all by itself. I never thought I would buy anything but Martin or Gibson's…. this changed my mind completely. if you're thinking about one of these just buy one!! My honest opinion is the price will go up on these as the solid woods and craftsmanship are stunning.Michael

I’ve had my A3M for three years now. I still look at mahogany wood grain in awe. This guitar has a nice rounded tone that can compete with Taylor and Martin guitars made from mahogany. Plugged into an acoustic amp sounds even better. I notice the price point has increased $100 (not sure of due to inflation) which shows that it is a respected instrument. I spent months spinning around for a acoustic guitar and I was truly pleased with the Yamaha A3M. I think it can keep up with Martin and Taylor on stage as a reliable gig machine.bryan nuñez

I bought this guitar after owning the big brother for some years when the Guild Chinese made Solid wood guitars came out. This restock was half the price of the standard model and I found it played very well. It is not a big strummer but very articulae and bluesy. Even though I returned mine to American Music Supply, I am inclined to give it a top review. It just wasn’t for me. The tonal quality is considerably bright and crisp, very similar to that of a Taylor. For a mahogany guitar, it was very bright. Too bright for me. Compared to Martin, a Martin Mahogany is less bright and warmer. There is also an incredible natural reverb to the Guild M-20. Yet, for my ears it was a little to much. I prefer the darker tones of a Martin Mahogany. The Guild M-20 is comfortable to play and hold, is similar in size to a traditional parlor guitar. Is also nicely constructed and built to last. If a brighter toned mahogany with a strong sustained natural reverb is what you need, this guitar is for you.Rob H.

My Guild M-20 Vintage Sunburst is incredible. The build and finish is impeccable. The neck is very comfortable, string spacing is ideal, and the action is low. Intonation is spot on. I love the look and feel of this guitar. But the best part is the playability and the sound! The guitar is very responsive, whether fingerstyle, flatpick, strumming with or without a pick. I get a wide variety of sounds depending on how I play… and IT IS A JOY TO PLAY! I like guitars with binding and some "bling." This guitar has neither. It is very simple and I like it that way. The question is, when do I remove the plastic from the pickguard? Ha. I highly recommend this guitar.Michael K.

I was very excited to see and play a highly reviewed 12 string that costs pennies compared to my 12 string Takamine, Yamaha and Ibanez. Once I got through the box I saw the guitar had the look of some cheap pressed wood. The sound was as weak as a cup of Finnish coffee. The darn thing couldn't stay in tune to save mine or its life. How this guitar gets rated so highly MUST be a result of fake reviewers OR I simply got the ONE Rogue 12 string that seemed to be made by the Fisher-Price Company. This is NOT a musical instrument. It IS an instrument to make noise with. My edition was not worthy of the effort one has to put forward to learn and play guitar. One must have to have an instrument meet the musician at least half-way. With this "musical" instrument, you have to cross the block, pick the guitar up and fight against it to produce close to a tone that sounds musical. Best to buy a used good name 12 string guitar. Or save your pennies and get a Takamine or Yamaha. The latter will be excellent and cost in the $350 range. But a Yamaha will play forever and stay in tune. I recommend my Yamaha over my ash Ibanez. The former just has a fuller tone. If possible save for the Takamine which is on another guitar plane altogether. But don't buy a guitar based on price and/or name. I've discovered many of the friends I play with can't tell if their singing and/or playing is in tune!!. And yet, they own $5,000 MARTIN GUITARS!! Haha. Quite simply a waste of money. Be like me buying a red-green "masterpiece" oil painting, as I'm red-green color blind. But I DO have a good ear and this Rogue of a guitar is worthy of no one's money or effort. M.F. has many more-though more expensive-options that will bring the performer YEARS if not DECADES of playing happiness. Only misery lies in a 12 string Rogue guitar. Avoid.muskoxmike

Purchased this around December hoping to get my kids into it. As usually happens, it ended up being much more of a display use. I would imagine it was picked up about 12 times max total. It sat on display being ignored primarily. Still, by mid-June (in under 6 months) the bridge has warped and started to detach from the main guitar. I noticed this as I walked past it. The glue did not hold. Surprise though, because you can't just pull up a website for Rogue. I called Guitar Center for help to contact the manufacturer as this should be covered under their warranty. Guitar cCenter took my information and said they would forward it to their "contact" for the company and I should receive a response in 3-5 business days. It's been a few weeks now and I'm not impressed. No one called me back, they wouldn't simply give me an 800 number to call to handle it myself, and I still have no solution and no idea who to contact in order to make a claim on the manufacturer warranty. I am more than disappointed with Guitar Center's negligence to truly stand behind a beginner product they seem to offer a great deal of.Amanda V.

I'm so impressed by my RD 90. I think some reviewers are hesitant to give it the praise it deserves because it is an inexpensive guitar. I did a little work to lower the action and now it is perfect. Humidity and temperature changes cause it to need occasional tuning, no different that my other two acoustics. It has a full, rich tone. It plays easily. It makes me feel like I got a real bargain; I don't know how they turn a profit at this price.Charles

Great sounding guitar, electric or acoustic. Easy & fun to play I bought this guitar as a backup for just in case My 66 Gibson LG-0 fails or string breaks at a gig. The next day after it arrived & played it live plugged in for 2 hrs. It was great. Deep bass & clear highs. The only thing that was a little bit of a bummer was only a cosmetic, in my opinion flaw. You can see where they marked the frets for installation of the wire with a hand marked, magic marker on each fret. Then they must have gotten a little wild because there is an actual magic marker mark on the fretboard for no reason. We laughed about it being from china & kept playing. Right out of the box I noticed a horrible buzzing (bad action) and it couldn't be tuned properly. Poor callibration. No hesitation. Returning as soon as possible for something of better quality. Ibanez isn't what they used to be. Done with them. So disappointing.Beev

I use the guitar mainly for practice. Currently I do not have a band or know any people personally to have jam sessions with but I truly cannot wait to play in a group or a band. The guitar overall sounds amazing with pretty bright tones. This guitar is great for fingerpicking style rather than strumming but it still sounds great for strumming. The pickups are fantastic on this guitar and have a great sounds connected to an amp as well. I simply love this guitar and would highly recommend for any chords that may require "thumb-overs" the neck feels nice and is really easy to wrap your hand around. There’s a lot of products, items, tangible man made things in this world, and most things I would give a 4 star rating TOPS! But this guitar? This damn Taylor 214ce guitar? Bro, it’s a no brainer. 5 stars all day through and through with no hesitation. Let me just say, if you are even remotely considering buying this guitar, I will tell you as a proud owner, just buy it and rip the band-aid. I promise you it will be 100% worth it and you will thank me later. I’ve actually owned a Taylor 214ce 5 years ago and I had to sell it due to unforeseen circumstances in my life at the time and I will tell you I’ve been kicking myself in the ass up until 3 days ago when I finally got the money to get my hands on one again. So basically, I’ve bought this guitar 2 times because I love this guitar and cherish it like none other. Matter of fact, I’ll take an ass beating by saying I like this guitar much more than all the other Taylor models period. I owned a Taylor 814ce which is a $3,500 guitar and it was a colossal disappointment compared to this Taylor 214ce. Yes, for me, the cheaper $1,000 guitar is better than their higher end models. This is my first Taylor guitar and what a guitar it is. The set up was to the tee right out of the box. A quick tune up and it was ready to play. The action is totally amazing and so easy to play whether regular or bar chords. As far as lead runs it is amazing and the tone and projection are out of this world especially for a guitar in this price range. I have a Martin, Guild, Fender,Luna,Briarwood acoustic electric guitars and this is my new favorite. Acoustic guitars all have their own special voice, some low and some high but the Taylor's is just about in the middle which is perfect for most of the music that I play. My brothers I jam with all want to take turns playing this guitar and have decided to invest in their own. Whether this is your first guitar or an addition to your collection, you can't go wrong . I would reccomend this guitar to anyone who loves to play a beautiful sounding instrument.Steven Card

I honestly don't have a lot of negative things to say about this guitar. It's sound is beautiful, it's perfect for jamming and relaxing, and so on. It does need tuning regularly, but so does every instrument. I don't feel the need to dock stars for a natural thing.J

I bought this guitar as an impulse buy. The natural, flame top really caught my eye. Strummed a few chords and bought it on the spot. The smaller, concert style body has a slightly thinner, trebly tone, which I really like. It's very comfortable to play, neck feels great. I record with it often and am very happy with the tone. It has a built in tuner, which is a nice addition. The built in pickup is ok, but I prefer to mic it up when I record with it. Mi only complaint is the tuning machines are kind of junky. They aren't very smooth. But when you finally get it tuned, it stays. Overall, I really like it. Like I said, it was an impulse buy. I have 12 other Electrics, acoustics, and basses, and this little acoustic is one of my favorites!Mike

Looks and sounds beautiful. First acoustic I've ever bought that came playable right out of the box. Too many at this price point have such a high bridge there's about half an inch between the string and the 15th and onward frets. Not this one. I had been looking to get back into the guitar after a long hiatus. I didn't want to jump in the deep end with something expensive at the start, but still wanted something decent to play with, after some research decided upon the CC-60S. The guitar does exactly what all the reviews say it does for beginner learning. It feels comfortable, sounds great and isn't as tough when navigating the frets with chords and notes. PMT delivered the CC quickly, was securely packaged and I've found no defects. Would recommend anyone thinking of learning the guitar to purchase this from PMT.John O.

My guitar does not have any obvious defects in it's construction, which is more then I can say for some other guitars around this price point. The lightweight strings it came with make it easy to play for an acoustic. Sounds pretty good to me. Even smells nice, faintly like cut hardwood.SEAN

I like this guitar very much. It sounds beautiful, it looks beautiful and it plays well. The action on the guitar was a bit too high(0.012" on the 1st E string above the 12th fret). I had to adjust a truss rod a little anyway(instructions are provided with a tool included). It lowered the action a little(to 0.010"). Still not enough, so I will have to remove some saddle with sanding paper-a simple task, down to 0.007"-0.008". Eventually I want to replace a saddle, nut and pins with a natural bone and a new set of phosphor bronze strings, which will notably improve the sound…I can barely wait. A cost of these parts is affordable and well worth it for this beautiful guitar. For somebody who is new to these tasks, there are videos on You Tube that show you how to do all that correctly and it's a fun challenge. TWO TIPS: 1) There is a plastic film cover over the sound hole. It will leave some adhesive around the sound hole, when you remove it. Don't get frustrated by it. It gets easily removed by using Naphtha-a safe dissolver used by professionals, that won't damage guitar's finish, if used correctly-sparingly on a piece of cloth. 2) A pickguard is covered with a transparent film. Don't bother removing the red sticker, just remove the whole film along with it. Hope it helps…best wishes.dusamajstorovi_0

I have no idea how they do it for the money. Quality binding and purfling, good finish, ebony bridge and bridge pins, TUSQ nut and saddle, vintage Grover-style tuners, abalone inlays down the back of beautiful solid Pau Ferro back and sides. This guitar would be a good deal at $2,000 USD when you compare it to the other stuff on the market, at the current price it's practically robbery. Tonally speaking it's very bright and somewhat lacks bass, but if you go play very expensive guitars you'll find that's actually quite common for spruce tops made from hard body back and sides (rosewood, maple, walnut, pau ferro, etc.). I personally like a really bright guitar because on recordings guitars always end up sounding darker and bassier than in person (due to proximity effect). To my ear it sounds like a high-end Martin D-35, which I also own and have compared together. If you're looking for a bright and somewhat even midrange response from a guitar, especially for recording or playing live gigs then I highly recommend the Sierra. This guitar has no business being as cheap as it is for the quality. The workmanship is very good all throughout and I will almost certainly be buying their all mahogany guitar next.Joshua

I bought this guitar on faith. Faith in the reviews. Faith in the guitar's description, the manufacturing process descriptions, and the warranty promises of the company. Prior to Covid, I would not have conceived of buying a guitar online, without playing it first. But I have a couple friends who buy guitars online and they have done well. So I pulled the trigger. A few days later my guitar arrived, and slightly ahead of schedule. The outer box was damaged, and there really wasn't any other protection other than the included hardshell case. But the case did protect the guitar, and my first revelation was, just how nice the case is. It really is a nice plush and sturdy case. Then I pulled the guitar out of the case, and it was undamaged. I inspected it carefully and could not easily find any flaws in it's construction or finish. So I tuned it up and walla! It sounds great. And it feels nice in my hands. It probably needs a slight truss rod adjustment, as it buzzes very slightly, but it did come from clear across the country to a very different climate. I bought this guitar on sale, and for the solid woods and quality components, it is definitely a higher quality instrument than offered by other Guitar companies at this price point. So I am very pleased with my purchase. I will gladly recommend Orangewood to my friends.Stephen C.

I have played guitar on and off for most of my life and have just picked it up again after a 15 year hiatus. My last acoustic guitar was a Martin D15 which I loved but rather than let it collect dust, I sold it to someone who appreciated it and gave it the attention it deserved. When I decided to start playing again I considered several different brands but based on you tube reviews was originally interested in the Orangewood Echo. But then I watched a video that was a blind comparison of the Hudson to a Huss and Dalton and a Martin D41. I was blown away and when this went on sale, I made the leap and bought the Hudson rather than the Echo because I love the way the sound of a solid wood guitar evolves as it is played. Even though I haven’t played in 15 years, the setup on the guitar was perfect and I was able to get some beautiful tones immediately. My chops are coming back quickly (muscle memory still there despite the time lapse) because it is such a joy to play. Not only do I love the tone and sustain of this guitar, the fit and finish is outstanding. The herringbone binding on the top and back is clean,elegant, and refined. Reminds me of the D28 herringbone, but even nicer in my opinion. I am thrilled with this guitar. It has reminded my just how satisfying playing a quality guitar is.Brian N.

I have owned this Guitar for almost 2 years and I was very impressed with the finish on this Guitar the moment I took it out of the box. The gig bag and other accessories that come with this Guitar make it an exceptional value. Very balanced, bass is crisp, rich and clear, mids and highs are a little subdued, warm, but very clear with pretty amazing definition/separation all along the fingerboard, including past the 12th fret. I was hoping for a bit more volume, but it's as loud as one can expect from the body size. Overall, it's a sweet-sounding guitar and I often find myself just letting chords ring all along the fingerboard because the string separation is so clear. I have a collection of carbon fiber guitars that I use for gigging and I love them and I was missing the warmth of a good wooden guitar. I was nervous about buying a guitar without playing it, but the combination of the price and the trial period convinced me to give it a shot. I have previous experience with Breedlove and this one didn't disappoint. A great buy on a really nice instrument.j10string

Hi Its the Old Time Picker again, This Martin is perfect, I have a Martin HD35 three high end Taylors 810, 524, 562, and a Gibson J15, So I know great guitars and this Martin 000 18 is a perfect guitar, In the past Martin was a little off on the 18 line of guitars with the binding being a little ruff, But not anymore, They have really stepped up to the plate with this one, It is perfect on the fit and finish and the sound is everything you want a Martin to be.i recommend This guitar to anyone of any style age or level of playing. I've bought several guitars along the way, always knowing that I wanted a Martin 000. Somehow I found myself able to get the guitar I've always wanted and I'm so happy! Why did I wait so long? First of all, Martin Guitars are very nice. VERY NICE. The best. Especially once you get into the 18 series on up. The quality and craftsmanship lives up to the reputation. Of course, all of the hard work that Martin puts into their instruments results in breathtaking sound that only a Martin Guitar can produce. As soon as I picked up the guitar I could feel the power. My first chord was an open D, my go to key anytime I pick up a guitar to try. It's something you have to feel, but all I can really say is that the sound of this 000-18 is glorious. A very round classic sound, with a bit of chime on top. This 000-18 has a wide sonic range, but mid-range focused. The mahogany has that sweet tone which is great for all styles of play. This is definitely a finger pickers dream guitar, but can handle flat picking. I also like that I can lay into this guitar and the strumming remains crisp and not muddy. Drop tunings and capo up and down the neck is near perfect! This is my all around, do it all guitar! This guitar sings. Projection, sustain, volume when you need it, it's all there! Some guitars sound boxy and cheap. Not Martin. Not this one. It actually sounds like I should have paid more. The 000-18 does not come with electronics, but that's okay. You may not want any for this guitar. At least for a while. If you're a professional gigging musician than you could add a pickup, but there could be other choices out there suitable for gigging and amplified performance. The Sitka spruce top is gorgeous. Booked perfectly with silking that I can spend forever looking at. The neck is very smooth and modern feeling. I like it because it's not too thin, but allows me to play all styles. Overall: Bought this Martin, it is everything the 00018e is except I get to pick out the pickup I want. I like it much more than a Dred, it is perfect in my hands and very light. The sound is typical of a high-end Martin 000. The Dred is just too boomy and could not cut through the mix in recording or playing live. This guitar is great for strumming picking or lead. Bottom end is still great with the added bonus of sparkling high end and playing lead is a thrill. You got to get you one.Randall

I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob. Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar. Very impressed with this guitar, intermediate/advanced feel but priced at a beginner budget. You won't regret picking one up, I assure you!Big Bone Murphy

There is a point of quality when an instrument reaches when it stops being seen as "better or worse" but rather just a different flavor. This Yamaha has reached that point. You can play it alongside a guitar costing 5x more and it stands up well. This is just a beautiful guitar through and throughout. You can get beautiful uncompromisingly great studio recordings with this guitar. I've owned many acoustics over the years, MANY, and this Yamaha is one of the best sounding I've ever owned. Went to GC just to check out a few lower end acoustics to pick up for jamming on, and tried almost every one in the room. Picked this one up last just before I was ready to leave, and immediately was blown away by the sound and playability, brought a couple friends to listen and tell me which one they thought sounded the best, and hands down this won over all of them. It has the tone and warmth of a Martin D34, which I have owned a few, and it plays like a dream. The neck is so sliky smooth, easy to fly up and down with no effort. It has amazing sustain and beautiful tone, I fell in love with it and just couldn't put it down. I didn't expect a guitar of this price range to sound as good as it does, got it home and I couldn't put it down. Played for 4 hours straight, and even after trying to put it down to go to bed at 1am I found myself playing a for a few more minutes before I could actually go to sleep. Love this Yamaha more than any guitar I've bought in the last decade. The best thing about it is, It gave me the desire to pick up playing guitar again, after hardly touching any of my other guitars for almost a year it's the one I want to play more than all of them. Great guitar, wouldn't hesitate to buy another in a different color, if you want something that you won't be able to put down this baby has the sound and feel your looking for.Johnny D

Having relatively recently started learning guitar on an electric stratocaster-style guitar this was a great transition to the acoustic segment. The thinner body makes it much more comfortable to play than say a dreadnought and the neck is comfortable to transition too, yet the guitar doesn't seem to sacrifice as much sound as you'd expect from a thinner guitar. The finish of the guitar is that of a more expensive guitar for example the rosewood finger board. On arrival I actually thought the guitar looked better than the pictures on the website suggest but do note that because of the finish it is prone to showing finger marks which would need cleaning time to time. I would highly recommend this guitar.Richard P.

After suffering a permanent back injury I could no longer play my elictric guitar as it was too heavy or my acoustic electric guitar because it felt like it was twice it's normal size because I could no longer find a comfortable position for myself to play it. I bought a keyboard thinking that I could still play music. Afterv two weeks of playing around with the keyboard I gave up pllaying. Then I saw on the internet one night an advertisement for a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic electric guitar guitar with a slimline bosy which looked like a nice guitar so I checked out males and females playing it and sounded very nice so I bought one. Man am I'm so glad I did. I got the sunburst like this one on sale. I was excited as l took it out of the box and went straight to my mancave and started playing it. It was perfecty in tune and for a guitar of this size it's got such a beautiful tone playing ACOUSTIC. So I plugged it in and it's as good as it sounded on YouTube. As an 67 yesr old man who started playing guitar when I was 16 years old, this is a beauty. I recommend this guitar to beginners, anyone with small hands and even people who want a good guitar to take with them without taking up much space in your car. Yep, it's a beaty.Deano

I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob. Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar. Very impressed with this guitar, intermediate/advanced feel but priced at a beginner budget. You won't regret picking one up, I assure you!Big Bone Murphy

Guitar works great and so do the electric components of the guitar (the tuner and volume). Would recommend. The guitar i received is a right-handed guitar.Michael
