I love these strings, I used to use Elixirs and they were fine but a friend of mine who is a pro sound guy and works with the biggest names in music said alot of the musicians were using these, so I tried them. They have a bit of a mellower sound but really chime with harmonics and seem to sustain better. I will continue to use the Elixirs on some songs but the Black Diamonds are great for blues and country rock ( IMHO )gbluzy335

these strings are the best that i have ever used. i think they sound better then d'addarios, if only because they are warm as opposed to bright, which goes well with my alder guitar. mine lasted two months before breaking, and i couldn't detect a change in tone or tuning stability. and they're red! the only reason i gave a 9 on quality is that the coating wears off where it contacts the frets and where you pick after a month or so, but it doesn't affect anything but looks. too bad i didn't buy more.word.
Here you have one of the best strings you can get for the price you pay. One may think, oh since they are coated with color , the quality sucks. They were wrong, I've been using these strings for about 3 months now, not only do i get compliments on how good the strings look on my black Gibson Epiphone, but i also receive compliments on how good my tone is. There is only one problem i have with these strings. After playing with the strings all day, around the picking area of the strings they red coating comes off. I've been an Elixir user ever since I bought my Taylor two and a half years ago. That being said, when I bought an American Standard Strat this summer, I wanted to try other strings. I love coated strings, and was looking for a product with long life, good feel, and good tone. So I wanted to try these new Slinky's. I bought a set and when the stock strings needed replacing, these went on. I strung up, tuned, and played on them, a lot. The initial tone and feel were great. They felt and sounded a lot like uncoated strings, which was great. But as the weeks progressed, and I continued to play, the tone stayed intact, but the feel wore off. My hands sweat a lot and I'm pretty brutal on strings (as in on an uncoated set, they can start corroding after 5 or 6 hours). I would say that after about 3 weeks of playing about 4 hours each week, I began to notice wear on the strings around each fret, and as I wiped them down after each time playing, more dirt wiped onto the rag. During the next few weeks, more and more wear showed up, and they began losing their tuning stability. I finally took them off, and restrung with Elixirs. In a back to back test of new Slinky's vs. brand new Elixirs (Nanoweb on Acoustic) over 8 weeks and playing around 4 hours each week, the slinky's wore a lot faster. At the time of restringing the strat, I still had no troubles with too much wear, or tuning stability on the Elixirs, but the Slinky's needed to go. Personally I'm going to stick with Elixirs, but these were great strings. They feel nice, sound good, and are a little cheaper than Elixirs, but I feel like they could be better. If you want the lasting tone and feel, I would choose Elixirs over these strings.JohnWhirl
I've been playing guitar for 22 years and have tried many strings. I am very happy with these and have recommended these strings to fellow players. I put these strings on a PRS Custom 22 with Humbuckers and they sounded great. My PRS has a thinner sound at higher gain levels but these strings gave me a warmer/Les Paul tone that I really like. Plus, they play smooth as butter. I say thumbs up, try them ! I see some reviews that say they don't last long. Compared to what? Not changing your strings for 3 months! These are my new favourites – I have always use Super Slinky's in the past (I'm talking 30 years+), but these have an edge…don't ask me why, they just do, it's a feel, especially on the B and top E; they don't sound any better, in my opinion, but they have this feel about them; I use Ibanez JS and Jem Pia guitars, and some how they seem to improve the overall quality of the instruments themselves…who knows…they are the same gauge too…I will likely use these for another 30 years now- if I am really lucky…James S.

I have a been playing the guitar for decades and have always played flat-wound strings. I have never used a set with a naked G-string. I specifically requested a wrapped G-string when I had Guitar Center do the set-up. When I got the guitar back it had a naked G-string. It has had a negative impact on my future relationship with Guitar Center. Incidentally, I have been using D-Addario Chromes for a long time and like them.Roger
I just put a set on my Les Paul and I found that the nickel isn't overly bright but still allows for some clarity despite the coating. I didn't notice a reduction in sustain which I was somewhat expecting. I really love the feel and would recommend these over conventional, non-coated nickel strings if budget allows.Daniel

I really like this and they look really cool against my maple strat or my ebony neck strat. Sound is great and unlike a lot of others I have played on my first set perhaps a half dozen times and I am not seeing the coating wear off as some state. There are perhaps a couple small spots where the coating is missing but hardly noticable. Smoother to the touch, less fret wear and using a high end board and half stack my tones are as good or better than they have ever been. I dig these and plan to make them my std on acooustic as well. Getting rid of that squeek on acoustic (even using finger ease) might make me play it a little more. The same size acoustic strings are a lot cheaper, they always raise the price when things get popular. I play in D standard, and have been at it for 23 years. I've tried all brands and gauges, but these stick out as one of my top five favorites, and I came across them by accident. I wanted to buy a set of 11-50 DR TiteFits and accidentally bought these. When i got home I looked at the pack, realized I got the wrong pack and thought, "Black coated strings?! What a gimmick." Still I figured, why not try them out. Was I glad I did. Heavy and thick for melodic riffs and chords. Brights are crisp and clear. Smooth on the fingers and fretboard. I have a black guitar so they look fantastic as well. One thing, the part of the string that is picked fades after awhile, but it is no different than what happens to nickel plated strings. I waited months to write this review as part of the selling point is extra life-durability, and they deilver. They've lasted longer than any string I've had and have never broke one. Don't be scared away by the coating,colour or cost. I used to be one of those guys that said he'd never play on coated strings, but that was before I tried them. Pros: Look really good at first. Stay in tune real well. Slick feeling. Cons: Coating randomly wears off quickly. Dull sounding compared to Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. Bottom line, these strings aren't reallyworth the money. The only thing they do is hold your tuning real well and they're very stretchy and I've yet to break one.

These coated guitar strings are decent. The sound is solid, no problem tuning. The only thing that I'm not crazy about is the feel. I think you can feel the coating. Maybe it's just me. They feel a little like silky and slippery I guess I just have to get used to it. They seem to be holding up well. I'll keep using them until I break them.Lynkala
The nice guys at D'addario were kind enough to send me a free pack of XT 10-46. I was sceptical at first but to be jobest, these are a fantastic upgrade to the EXL110 strings. They broke in quickly and the tuning is very stable. They still feel like EXL110s although when I first put them on I thought they sounded a little duller, especially the G-string. Now I've been using EXLs for around 20 years but I doubt I'll ever fit them again. The XLs are a brilliant new product. Yep, nearly twice the price but worth every penny imho.axemadman29

Years and years trying every string set, now I just wish this one will exist forever. Long lasting, cannot feel the coating as opposed to any other coated set, even from the same brand. Hybrid set 9 – 46 goes everywhere stratocaster, telecaster, musicman, Gibson… Never broke a string and the sound is Ernie ball, my favourite. Need the 9 for the +one tone bendings, the 46 for a strong tight rock rhythms, both go well together. A bit expensive but resists much longer to corrosion. The only problem is if you have strong pickups and low action, low wounded strings might loose brightness and punch more quickly than you would expect. To conclude, the great change for me is that I do not need to replace systematically strings when I pick up a guitar that has been sleeping for weeks. Do not put any (chemical) product on your strings, this is an awful practice, ah, ah, ah….
I've been trying a wide variety of Ernie Ball strings over past year and find myself coming back to this set. I've now decided to stick with this set – as the tone and feel are perfect for my preferences. These coated strings have noticeably longer life and better feel than the uncoated version – making the slight increase in price well worth it. I love the hybrid set as the high strings retain bendability and the lower strings have the added bass and warmth from increased thickness. These are by far the most decent set of strings that i have bought. I used set of fender 9's before, in comparision ernie ball 11's sound denser than any other strings. Strings feel smooth and have a nice ring to it. As the gauge is thicker, it is absolutely suitable for those who switch between acoustic guitars and electric guitars, and they would hardly feel any difference. The only noticeable negative part is that there are some kind of stains on the lower strings, 11 14 and 18. It is not rust but just some kind of brown stain on certain sections of the string, dont know what it is but they dont effect the play. Highly recommended for intermediate players who like playing rock, metal. I think these are only strings u should use if u love AC/DC ! CheersRahul r.

My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

I do a lot of country style string bending and did some research to see what the pros were using, But I recall Tommy Emmanuel’s answer to an audience member who asked what gauge strings he uses, to which Tommy replied, “it’s should not matter to you what I use, but rather what you personally feel comfortable with†. I kept this in mind when doing my research. I had been using 10’s but found that bending the B and G string was a little challenging. Hey, we don’t all have SRV fingers that can bend aircraft cable. For my first Stringjoy order I tried to assemble a custom set (a cool feature that Stringjoy offers) and Scott contacted me with a suggestion. That personal attention was something I had not encountered until then. After some experimentation, I am now using the 9-48 set and it has changed my playing in a big way. The best strings hands down. I have gone back and forth with most of the other major brands, and I keep coming back to Stringjoy. Overall: These DRs are a pleasure to play, very nice sound whether his or lows. And their price is very competitive and that is what makes them special. Overall: These strings were a surprise for me. I thought that a coated electric string would have my figures and pick sliding all over the place, but this was not the case. There was a noticeable lack of friction then normal strings, which I like because the death metal and jazz (mainly bop and free) that I play is usually fast (quarter note = 180-250 bpm) and lack of friction = less energy that I have to expend. The tone was very consistent from the moment that I put the strings on. Even after they were all stretched out the tone was still the same. The tone lasted for about 3 weeks before the coating started to come off. I play a few hours a day everyday so please keep that in mind. I broke the D string about 4 1/2 weeks in and did not have another set of these strings and replaced it with a regular string. It got me through rehearsal, but the feel of that one non-coated string and the tone were completely different from everything else. So if you like these guys get at least 2 packs so you don't come across this problem. You are going to get the same DR quality that they are known for. I've been playing DRs for years. Hand made strings are sometimes a toss up, but DR has done well by me and gives me the tone I need to play a plethora of styles. If you do not want to have a dramatic tonal difference in your strings after a few weeks of playing then these guys are for you.Aaron

These are the best strings I've ever used. GORE has been trying to discontinue and keeps pushing the Nanoweb version: but the difference is huge! No match at all! The Elixir Polyweb maintain their tone, brightness and tension over 10 times what a Nanoweb does and probably twice that number over un-coated strings. I play every day and I've had guitars with over 6-7-8 months using the same set of strings with no issues. The're that good! BTW, my main guitars are Gibson Les Paul (TonePros Nashville and Tune-O-Matic Locking Bridge, Tusq Nut) and PRS Custom 24 (Tremolo version with Bronze Saddles and a Tusq Nut). These strings feel so good… no such thing as a strange feel because they're coated. You actually feel like playing with a very familiar and comfy feel. These Elixir Polyweb keep outperforming their competitors easily: D'Addario EXP, DR Extra, Fender DuraTone, Dean Markley Blue Steel, Earnie Ball Coated Slinky or the latest Earnie Ball Cobalt. This was a great price on my favorite strings. Shipping was very fast too. Unfortunately, "new" does not mean the same as"fresh" and I have now learned the difference. These do seem to be genuine Elixers, but a few problems which led to broken strings may indicate that these were either sitting on a shelf for a very long time or else exposed to moisture. Normally, brand new strings will be very springy when you first take them out of the sleeve. They generally will uncoil into a straight line, but every single one of these maintained a strong curl or twist in it. But that alone was not a problem for me. The strings installed normally and tuned well, but the tonal quality seemed a little sub-par compared to what I was used too. Still, it's possible I was just imagining that. The strings were fine for a month. Held there notes as well as any, and the tone was at least decent, though I still felt it was missing something. But after one month I had the B string break. I usually keep Elixer strings for 6 months before they finally lose their great tone and I replace them, and because I wind plenty of extra string around the posts, I haven't had a string break on me in over 8 years. Breaking one now pretty much confirmed my earlier suspicions. I went ahead and replaced all 6 strings with the next set, but 2 weeks later and the high E string broke on me. For now I'm borrowing the high E from the final set, but the first chance I get I will be replacing every string with a new, fresh set from a local music store. I don't think I'll buy strings online again because of this apparent problem of freshness.jaredlang85

I went to my girlfriends sisters home for Xmas and a few guys got a some guitars out and we played some rock, country and bluegrass on Elixers strung on acoustic instruments. They claimed the strings were three years old. They sounded quite good for their age. After seeing a John Paul Jones interview where he said Elixers were all he used. I already used them but his opinion completely sold me. I even bought an Elixer tee shirt. I use them on all my guitars and mandolins. I won't settle for anything else. I just bought a FX5 that had Addario's on it. No pause, I replaced them with Elixers. Great sound. Long lasting. Stay good looking too. Buy multiple set bundles and save money.easymedicine1

I've been using black beauties for years now. Originally bought them for the look they gave me on my black Tele. They really lasted a long time. And they produced good tone on the instrument. Of course some the coating wore off at the picking area after a few hours of use. Everyone expects that. But you could only tell if you get real close. the fingerboard area stays coated real well. And keeps that slick feel. I don't notice any sound degradation, and the intonation remains constant. And hey Kids, a black majic marker fixes the chipped coating! Just kidding ! Overall: I'm really not that tough to please but these strings are a disappointment to me. I do like the black color, BUT – and I kid you not! – within ONE minute of playing the black was already coming off my high E string and I was playing with my fingers, not a pick! I saw what looked like a piece of fuzz on the string so I started wiping it off, only to realize it's the black color coming off further and further. Within five minutes I had about an inch and a half of bare string showing. It comes off so easy it seems lit it's just spray paint. I understand it won't last forever, but one minute?? Come on. The other thing I don't like about these strings is they have an uneven plastic type feel to them. It's not horrible, but they don't feel like "regular" strings. Other than that they sound OK, nothing special, so I'm definitely not buying these again.Tim
These look awesome and have a very smooth nylon feel. They don't sound bad at all. Maybe a little different I'm sure. They will shed the coating eventually, especially if u use a custom plectrum/pick made of metal or some other highly dense material. Metal will remove the coating immediately! The coating may also slow down the corrosion process. They are holding up good so far. I like these strings. I have a set of white strings somewhere. Those seem hard to find.jcfvintage

I've used the regular Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys for years. I have extremely sweaty/acidic hands, so I wear down strings extremely quickly. Sometimes if I play enough, I can wear the non-coated ones out in a couple days. I use Elixirs on my acoustic, but their electric strings aren't great. When I saw these coated EBs came out, I was stoked. They play the same as the non-coated, but for me, I could hardly tell they lasted any longer. If I go through normal strings in two weeks, these should have lasted about six weeks. They only lasted about three. They're fine strings, but you might as well save your money and get the non-coated ones, since they play the same.Clay
Been a Slinky user for years. Tried some of the other coated but didn't bond. Had some DR string packs and tried but was breaking E and B strings. Put these bad babies on and once again WOW. They have the nice somoith feel but not the heavy coated feel. Tone is bright but even with super overtones and sustain. Tried on my Strat and Tele will be putting on ES347. Wish there was a pure nickel wrap for the Fenders. The brighter tone should really sing on the Gibby.
These are great strings. I won't rave about them simply because I'm still more impressed by elixers. These are the second best set of strings ive ever tried. I have been using elixir since they came out in 2005-ish, but i keep an open mind and always try new thing. Tonally, the slinkies have SLIGHTLY more noticeable bite to them. This is probably because the elixirs are coated which might dull down the sound by that little. However, the main weakness of the slinkies is that the tension dies down VERY QUICKLY (less than a month), whereas that does not happen as fast with elixirs. When the tension starts dying, your intonation goes out of whack, and you're always playing out of tune no matter how much you adjust the tuning or intonation itself.Your only remaining option is to replace the string, which defeats the purpose of anti-rusting and long life strings.The tension has a much longer life on the elixir strings which is why they remain my favorite so far. Mechanically and physically, elixirs are closer to an "ideal string," despite the Slinky's slight tonal improvement. It lives up to its anti-rust claims, but like i mentioned, they dont have a "long life" since the tension fades quickly. However, none of the strings broke and i do play a lot of downstroke thrash metal rhythm which is very abusive to the strings. Acceptable–You get what you pay for, I never use cheap strings. (Like i said, elixers for years now)OJ

The tone when I first strung these on my Walden GA accoustic was great but after the guitar hung for two days in my humidified studio, the wound strings were all dead. I loosened and retightened the strings and some of the good tone returned but after a day the wound strings were again dead. I have not had good experiences with DR coated strings. I will stick to the coated strings I have been using even though they are pricy.Juice
I was skeptical about these strings based on reviews I've read on multiple sites, but tried them anyway. WOW!! These strings are incredible! I put them on my new Dean Custom, replacing the factory Ernie Ball strings and the difference was striking. Great tone and a very smooth feel. Also somewhat "slick" feeling but that meant they were fast. If you are into lead guitar, you might check these out. I had read that the coating on the strings affected sustain but I didn't notice any at all. Another thing I noticed was that my finger tips didn't turn black like they do after hours of playing on regular strings. These are now my "GoTo" strings for all my guitars.Zukiryder05
