I came across The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method (Vols 1 & 2) as I was looking for a guide. I was returning to Classical Guitar after a long period of off and on and I had decided i needed to go back to basics. Yet I also needed something to keep me motivated and enthusiatic as I relearned old skills and added new ones. In other words I needed something to which allowed me to enjoy the learning experience. I have found this in Christopher Parkening's Guitar Method which takes you from the fundamentals such as sitting and hand positions to more advanced skills and techniques step by step and right from the start applucation and playing beautiful pieces. Also with this edition there is the possibility to download all the audio exercises and duets so that you can play along with the Maestro himself! It's amazing to imagine Im sitting in the room with Christopher Parkening playing a duet. I believe that this Volume (and Vol 2) should be an indispensable part of the classical guitarists library as a reference and teaching resource as they contain a wealth and treasure trove of exercises and pieces for guitarist's from absolute beginners to the top performers.captain_jaycee

To me the greatest thing about this book is that if you want to read music notation and be able to play it, you can learn it with this book. It goes at a very good pace, teaching you the notes of the staff and where they correlate on the fingerboard. By the time you've finished this book, you should know every note on the fingerboard. I believe this is good knowledge to have for anyone wanting to play the guitar, to not only be able to play it, but to understand it. This book is priceless.C.W.P

For someone interested in classical guitar technique, this book is a valuable guide. If you are looking for a typical progressive course in learning the guitar, you will want to look at Part 2 of this series. The author recommends using part 1 and part 2 simultaneously. Part 1 does not contain any actual music, but is a text on the philosophy, approach, and technique of playing the classical guitar. It is highly detailed – for instance it contains an entire section on how to shape the fingernails for playing. Proper positioning of the guitar, and the various strokes and techniques used to sound notes are covered in detail. The author stresses proper practice , and instructs the student on how to develop an attitude that will lead to success.
