Reviews:
My favourite Music Theory book. Note that this book, as stated in the book, is not for raw beginners. I struggled through other theory books but this one by comparison is a dream, and I found it very well structured! However, to me music theory reminds me of my schools days when trying to master calculous, but I keep telling myself that a challenge is good for you.falcopilot99
The book is great. It's covered all the aspects I wasn't sure about and informed about things like modes in a simple and understandable way. I have recommended the book to a friend of mine who teaches guitar to children. This book will be treasured in my music information.soundslikethunder1

3. Guitar Theory: Straight Talking Music Theory For Guitarists [Book]
Product Details:
Master fundamental theory skills and take your guitar playing to the next level music theory can be an extremely complicated subject. this book is about the building blocks of music theory and how it applies to the guitar. it will teach you the things that matter; the stuff that's really worth knowing if you want to take your guitar skills to the next level. there's nothing wrong with learning advanced music theory. most of us, however, don't care too much about it, or have much need for it. it's all very well knowing everything about counterpoint, parallel movement, submediants, doppio movimento etc., but for the typical guitarist, unless you are serious about composing by formula, reading music, or just like sounding clever; it's not going to suddenly make you a better musician. guitar theory will show you how to make sense of the fundamentals; the stuff that matters. things that will help you figure out chords and scales without needing to resort to diagrams; understanding how and why chords belong to a particular key and how to recognise when they do; scale numbering and making scale choices for guitar soloing; why scales and chords go together? … all of the things that will help you understand music better and be able to make sense of the lingo when reading, or watching, other guitar tutorials and videos. this book makes no attempt at teaching advanced music theory which can take many years to master. it does however give you a head start by spending more time breaking down the basics instead of trying to stuff three years of serious study into less than a few hundred pages. once you understand the basics, the rest will make much more sense. the music theory building blocks will teach you: what the major scale is and why it is important. how scales are constructed and numbered. intervals: minor thirds, flat sevenths, augmented fifths etc. what it all means. how chords are constructed from scales. chords and key. why certain chords belong to a particular key. the roman numeral system and why it's so useful. minor scale types and their differences explained. the circle of fifths: is it really that useful? modes explained. how can seven scales contain all the same notes, yet be different? scales and soloing: how to choose scales to play over different chord progressions. scales and soloing is more of a bonus section. this subject alone can be huge so i've broke it down and condensed it. this is your crash course on one of the most common questions i get asked: "what scale do i use for my guitar solo?" this section will give you an understanding of how to look at various chord progressions and choose the right scale or other soloing ideas. this book does not teach you how to read music and no music notation is included or explained. it's just the building blocks of music theory and how everything pieces together. some tab is included so you should know how to read basic guitar tablature. the content moves from beginner to advanced intermediate. although much of the content is suitable for beginners, as the book progresses it leads more towards advanced ideas and some playing and listening experience is expected. the more you play, the more it will make sense. audio downloads audio examples and jam tracks for the book content are available for download and can be played on your computer or uploaded to any mp3 compatible device. just go to the link included in the book and grab the mp3s. no email address or signup required.

This compilation brings together three best-selling books that will help you master the essential rudiments of playing the guitar; technique, theory and the application of all the essential scales in music. at over 285 pages, this book contains over 400 notated audio examples and 60 backing tracks that demonstrate every technique, lick and scale clearly in a musical context. beginners to very advanced players will all find plenty of ideas, techniques and musical vocabulary to keep them improving for years. complete technique for modern guitar destroys the notion that aspiring players must spend all their practice time accelerating through progressively more difficult and obscure exercises. this book focuses on only the exercises that most quickly develop the fundamental four areas of guitar technique: picking, legato, playing in time, and expression. it contains over 200 essential, digestible, exercises to help you master the guitar with comprehensive coverage of picking, legato, rhythm and expressive techniques. the practical guide to modern music theory for guitarists is a complete and practical music theory course for guitarists takes you on a journey starting from simple major scale construction, its 3 and 4 note harmonisations, and common chord sequences, to a massively deep and structured dissection of all the modes of the major scale. the seven modes are broken down into their constituent intervals, triads, arpeggios and pentatonic scales, with each theoretical approach discussed and analysed and bought to life with over 200 notated examples, licks and professional backing tracks. after the many soloing possibilities are discussed for each mode, the author's favourite sounds are given as a concise list of recommended approaches. this will save you many hours of practice time, and provide solid starting point to explore the best of each tonality. guitar scales in context goes further than every other scale dictionary available: it provides you with backing tracks and licks for every one of the essential eighteen scales and modes that it covers. with over fifty backing tracks included, each scale is analysed, discussed and shown in the five most commonly used patterns. each scale shape is given with a corresponding chord, triad and arpeggio pattern to help you build and memorise the scale, both physically and aurally.

I can't remember excactly how i started playing guitar, i just remember that one of the first thing i wanted to do was to learn my favorate songs of my guitar heroes. So, i did a lot of "ear-training" and i didn't care about theory. After many years, i saw that i must do something that will help me to find my personal tone and it was time to stop practicing songs, but write my own stuff. And that time, i understood that without music theory i could never do this. And when you're in a band, it's very difficult for the band members to concentrate in music, when always saying each other: hey, go to the 5th fret and move your little finger there……and then move to……". Waste of time. So many of us play guitar for years, be in different bands all those years and maybe is difficult to admit that you don't even know how to read for excample a book with chords and scales with the right way.Maybe you play good, you're fast, but without music theory you're trapped inside the same things everyday. So the easiest way to learn what you've been missed is to choose the easiest way of learning.Choose books that make your practicing easier.Choose something that you will buy for your kid either, when he or she is starting to play guitar. The Mel Bay's "EASIEST GUITAR THEORY BOOK" is the best for this purpose.Grab it with your eyes closed, you'll never regret thistheodorosguitarist

Reviews:
I have just begun studying the book. The contents explain music theory for guitar better than any other book I have come across. I have been studying guitar, mainly on my own, for over ten years. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is truly interested in learning guitar theory and how to apply it to any kind of music.luckypaul88
I can now study the musical chords theory that I should have done years ago. A well written, easy to follow course is very helpful. Recommended to any aspiring musiciantomndot
I bought this book, because I desperately want to learn how to play my own guitar solos. I've looked at pentatonic scales, and know where they are, but can't seem to "break out of the box" and move up and down the neck. Spoiler alert: This book won't help you do that either. This is a book that starts out great, laying down solid musical theory, but ends up as complete gibberish to the average person. I was hoping to have something more, possibly a series of examples along the way of popular songs, and how the guitarist came up with what he played. Instead, with each successive chapter, my eyes glazed over more and more. I am more comfortable with music theory after reading this book. But I feel like the guitar is different from the piano. Guitarist don't "read" music like other musicians, they feel it and let it rip. In my opinion, this book needed to be more illustrative, so the reader could get a handle on the theory introduced.Kaptain Krunch

Reviews:
This is a straightforward method book suitable for late primary school students through to adults. It assumes no prior knowledge, so is written for beginners. It includes all the basic information for beginning music reading. It logically progresses through note reading and playing, one string at a time, for several lessons and then introduces some simple chords. I have used this book many times with new students with great success.meredith8022
Only about twenty pages through, but so far, its been a lot of fun self-teaching. I like the lack of specific directionthey just get right down to the content, providing songs to practice on. Its been a blast.mishaal-asfou-0
I only gave this book 4 stars because it isnt in the best condition. However, it is in better condition than I thought it would be, being labeled good. This book has, so far, been a great help. It introduces the basics of reading music for guitar, which is a very needful fundamental. I have been more of a player by-ear and sorta missed the basics of reading. I purchased this book for a college guitar tutoring lesson and it has been very helpful so far. I recommend it to anyone beginning to play or learning to read music for guitar!kattip_75

This is a complete learning course. It is deep and wide. Not easy, but do-able. If you are serious about guitar, you need this. If you are serious about your advancement don't pass it by.jazzbk
The book that I received is actually one large book which contains BOTH of these books combined. I don't mind. I still got what I wanted, and it's brand new. This book is extremely informative and easy to follow. But, you still must concentrate on what they are showing you. And you must practice, practice, practice.lasansei
