excellent book for bass guitartaylorjosephmichael
After borrowing this book from a friend I immediately wanted one for my own that I would not have to give back. Unlike some videos I tried, this book starts with basics. Using both words and pictures the reader sees the proper positions and movements for both hands as well as how to sit and what the proper playing position should feel like. Some techniques for hand stretching and strengthening are also included. In 98 short pages this book goes from being aimed at the "complete beginner" to playing with other instruments to reading music and teaching intermediate techniques. Canty's writing style is easy to understand, and at times it felt to me like I was being tutored by someone who actually knew not only how to play, but how to teach. It is certainly not a college level text, but I think that is what made it useful to me: It's a simple instruction manual for a total beginner. If you buy this book and follow the steps as written, I believe you too will learn "How to Play Bass Guitar".branson247

Straightforward reading could work out to simplify bass playingGlen G.
I bought this book to help my teenaged son with his new bass guitar. The '…For Dummies' is a much simpler and easy read than many other books out there and I hoped it would help spark his interest in practicing if the book was easy for him to understand. We both enjoy it (as I am trying to learn as well) and would definitely buy these types of books again! They make learning fun.dbcobb
A Good General Overview, not as nice as the guitar version. Theses books make nice refrence material and intro to various concepts and technquies. I do strongly disagree with the previous statement of: You can find everything on the internet and it's free. Not True. While there is tons of info out there it dosen't mean it's all good advice or even written by someone who remotely knows what there doing. In short there's only 12 notes. There is really nothing new under the sun anywhere. What makes a book a good book is what is covered, how it is covered and how it is explained. That's what your buying. You don't need anyone to show you say a Major Scale. It's simply a series of WWHWWWH (whole and Half Steps) thus every diatonic mode is simply coming from the Intial Scale. It's all a matter of how that info is expressed to you and teaching you to do it for yourself. A Scale Pattern is simply a result of the previious information. Etc on down the line. What makes a book good or bad depends on the How it is expressed to you/What is expressed to you/and if they teach you how to go about doing it for yourself. Yes there is some nice info online, but unless you can tell good from bad, how would you know what is usefull and what is misconceived. So Yes a nice handy refrence guide, not a complete method book. Useful but perhaps a bit on the pricey side.clittlern1

Over all, this is the best Bass book out there, (that I've used) and given that it is a little vague in some areas it still isn't a problem if you read through the chapters first!Mo' Bass
It came faster than expected but it didn't have a CD with it like the description said. It's pretty good it teaches you slapping and tapping which is what I'm primarily looking for. I wish it had more reading and picture demonstrations.alysscardie0
I wanted to begin playing bass, so I began messing around with bass guitars at GC in my price range to see which ones I felt comfortable with. Anyway, I started talking to one of the salesmen and he recommended this book. So I went home and started reading some of the reviews and decided to buy it. Some of the reviews state that the author wrote this book for guitar and just revised it for bass, which happens to be true as the author states himself in the book. All in all this seems like a very well written book and I feel it will be a great asset while learning to play bass. MJS also has these same lessons in DVD format which I may buy to compliment the book lessons.

A Killer history-reference-example book! Beautiful to look at and extremely well made. Should have included strap pins as it weighs about as much as a T-bird!Jody
The most detailed accurate book I've ever read on Bass Guitars. Absolutely amazing. I love this book. The pictures are Spectacular. Thank You, Geddy Leebb1671
This colorful tome is nearly nine pounds of incredible photographs and very readable text concerning the electric bass, the workhorse of every rock band and bottom and driving force of most other musical aggregations. You may wonder if there are any old basses left in the world after viewing Geddy Lees collection. Its a great limited edition that probably cost a million dollars to publish. Worth every cent.jedson45
16. The Bass Book: A Complete Illustrated History Of Bass Guitars [Book]
Product Details:
In california in the early '50s, the fender company introduced the world's first electric bass guitar. they couldn't have known known it then, but the precision bass would start a revolution in the sound of popular music. this book explains how that revolution happened and how its reverberations are still felt today. the two-guitars-bass-and-drums lineup that would define pop music found its heart with the fender bass. in the coming decades, the bass guitar provided the solid foundation upon which much modern music is still built. the bass book is the first to study its story, with the full lowdown of the most important bass players and bass makers. brands featured in the book include alembic, danelectro, epiphone, fender, fodera, gibson, hofner, ibanez, lakland, line 6, music man, peavey, rickenbacker, sadowsky, spector, squier, steinberger, wal, warwick, and yamaha. original interviews with makers of bass guitars from the past and present illuminate the book, with the popular establishment of the bass during the '60s and '70s examined in detail, along with more recent developments such as the popularity of the five-string bass. there is an exclusive interview with paul mccartney and other bassists who feature in the story, including stanley clarke, flea, james jamerson, jaco pastorius, and robert trujillo. dozens of unusual, desirable, and rarely seen basses are presented in high-quality photos. a reference section provides a wealth of information on the key makers. the bass book has all you need to know about the story of the bass guitar in one stylish, readable volume, and this revised and refreshed third edition brings the story right up to date.
Reviews:
I've looked for a hardcover copy of this for years. Fantastic color photography and compelling history of the instrument. Highly recommend for both musicians and lovers of the sound it produces.swar9585
Great history and details about the bassNitro
The Bass Book is for people who already know the subject and want to quickly reference some of the main points of the development of the product up to the late 90's, or someone just beginning to take an interest. Characteristics and quirks of the products listed are brief and to the point and based upon industry and historical sources, so don't expect recommendations or clues as to what suits the individual best. The recent advances in amplification, effects and use of software would require an entirely different type of resource book, which perhaps one day be contemplated by the author.mgharman

I bought this for my son years ago who felt it was very easy to learn from. He is now playing bass in a band and also in a symphony. We were so impressed with his improvement and renewed interest, that my sister picked up the bass and took the lessons too. Now we find out just how famous the author & educator is , he's very well known in the music world and has done studio work for, as well as toured with big name musicians over a number of years. Our whole family highly recommends this lesson book!hummierman
