True story: In 1985 I was using a JC-120 to play heavy punk-metal in California. Trying to be different, I was also using EMG pickups, which back then (like the JC-120) were associated with jangly new-wave players. My tone involved both a Pro-Co Rat and the amp's distortion on 10. My band opened for a famous metal band one night and afterwards the guitarists approached me about my tone, asked to see my gear, etc. They couldn't believe the sound I was getting with that amp. With them was a Mesa-Boogie artist-relations guy, because the famous band endorsed those amps. Anyhow the Mesa guy and me got to be friends and later he told me that the band (by then absolutely huge) had used JC-120s and a Pro-Co Rat to record their latest multi-platinum record. They kept the amps a secret (still used stacks on stage) but they did switch to EMGs from then on. Anyways, it's an amazing amp. I used to put Electro-Voice speakers in them for a bassier, tighter sound.Deafener
This amp is truly one of the classics! I have been using a JC-120 since the 80's! It is a very musical amp and good for any type of music. That is a statement of why is has been around for a very long time. I have read some of the other reviews about how noisy this amp can be. This is true but get a noise gate or use the othe rchannel that is without the chorus. For people who love heavy metal two words Boss Wazsa Ds-1 X and OD-1X will get you that Marshal Sound. For Blues players Sd-1X , OD-1X or Boss driver 2. This amp is designed to be used with effects and that is what makes it so versatile.Hank
Words are pretty meek in describing this amp. The best clean sound anywhere. Huge tonal presence bass is gigantic but not boomy just powerful and clear and that's with all tone controls at 12 noon. There's so much room to tweak. And then the chorus channel un-real sound of acoustic chorus. It's a trademark sound instantly recognized. No pedal can give you this chorus sound. It's a tank super build quality has not changed since the 80's and at 75 lbs you can't just grab and go but comes with casters thank goodness. I have used it with overdrive guitar a few times and it sounded unlike any other amp. It's not at all your British scooped sound. But the clean sound is why I bought this. I’m in love with the way my telecaster sounds through this amp. Just pure beautiful tone. Pedal board all sounds amazing through it too. Especially delay + reverb. Have seen some reviews say it doesn’t take overdrive/distortion pedals too well but it sounds phenomenal to me with my Fulltone Full-drive 3 overdrive pedal. Perfect for the really dirty alt rock/pop punk tone I use sometimes. In fact, even the amp’s own much maligned distortion sounds pretty decent to me, although I probably will rarely, if ever, use it Only tried in my living room so far but it goes LOUD. I’m in no doubt that it will have more than enough volume for small/medium gigs in pubs/clubs etc. There’s a line out too if I ever need more and don’t have a spare mic. I had the volume on 2 and was still wary of disturbing the neighbours as it was quite loud. Anything above half way gets pretty deafening. Also feels really light which will be a plus for gigging.Doug E.
This JC40 is outstanding. It's so pure and brings out true guitar sounds and also makes any pedal/effect sound, sound just as it was intended to. These models are gems. And it's so loud it shakes my house I can't imagine how loud the 120 is. This is most definitely enough to play smaller to mid size shows. Beautiful, wonderful stereo chorus, what a wonderful clean tone for jazz, pop, blues and any other music where clean guitar tone is desired! Speakers do have a bit of breakup and cabinet rattle when turned up loud, past about 6. Distortion tone strange and not tube-like. Digital reverb OK. Stereo inputs and stereo effects loop are great! This amp loves stereo pedals! Sounds absolutely glorious with guitar fed into amp through a stereo effect such as a Boss Digital Delay or Neo Ventilator rotary speaker simulator, and just a touch of the amp's stereo chorus. When I ordered this amp I expected to change out the tubes for JJs because if recommendations in the reviews I read. The stock tubes in this particular amp didn't produce any rattle and also provided plenty of clarity and bass. I don't sense the need to change out the tubes. This amp has more head room than my 1×10 2013 '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue Amp and I'll say its louder. The Vox Ac10c1 doesn't have a footswitch input installed onto it, if you want to switch from reverb to gain you will have to do it by hand as youre playing. The gain is rich, its a decent factory built in, the gain effect on my 4×10 2003 Fender Concert Reverb Amp doesnt sound nearly this good, if you buy the newer Marshall 20 watt tube amp or their MG solid state series amps their gain effects have a thinner, more static sounding than gritty sound to them. Vox amps have that more lush grit sound, akin to the sound we hear in the songs Ripcord and Vegetable by Radiohead (though Thom Yorke uses a turbo rat pedal) Haven't tried the Ac10c1 with a drummer, setting the Ac10c1 on an amp stand to project the speaker upward or placing this amp on a table should work just fine. The portability and light 27 pound weight are a huge plus if you decide on taking this amp anywhere. With this amp in one hand and a guitar stand and your guitar in a case in the other hand- you will be able to comfortably enter to set up and exit to load up in single trips. I originally expected to change the amp handle out for a leather handle but this vinyl handle is pretty thick. While playing through this amp, you can really feel and hear the nuances of its tube sensitivity while strumming and if you dig in with a pick, you can go from soft to really loud. The touch sensitive dynamics have been well calibrated in this amp. Again, the only downside is the lack of a footswitch input to switch between the amps good sounding gain and so so digital (not analog spring) reverb channel, no one seems to mention this. Everyone has their own effects pedals and loopers and what they already like to use so it almost balances out. I must say I actually like the sound of the gain on this amp. Again Im glad I didnt settle for a solid state Marshall in this price range, or the latest 20 watt tube Marshall which both felt and sounded lesser quality to me. I was looking for a good sounding portable amp. Glad I ordered a Vox Ac10c1
The Ac-10not only looks the business but it has since real depth and warmth to its tone. Clean – it’s bright and has the chime you’d expect. Turn up the gain and your tone breaks up but still retains clarity. Having the gain wide open and master volume down means you can still have the saturated crunch but not disturb others . Perfect for home use but would not be out of place in a small pub gig. Takes pedals will and with a multi-fix like a GT 100, if you disable the amp sim and use like a conventional pedal board, you don’t lose any quality of the AC10’s natural tone. A masterful amp and it even smells nice with those tubes cooking.Mark R.
Ive been playing 35 years and this is probably the best all around practice amp ive ever heard. Pros- looks great, sounds very good, cleans thump and chime, distortion can wail. Its loud for its size. Seems built well. Have had no bad issues. Cons- clean isnt near as loud as w the gain cranked up. No reverb. In short if this amp was 50-100W and had reverb and an external speaker jack id never play another amp. Good job VOX.jjsrvfan

Wasn't sure about this little guy – – but the one I received was in pristine shape, with power brick and carry handle. I power it with 6 rechargeable AA Lithium batteries – and it'll run x 6 hours easy without recharging. I play an acoustic guitar (i installed a Fishman rare earth pickup) in a small orchestra with a piano, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, etc, and only need to run at about 35% max volume to blend in well with the group. I've taken up giving lessons in my home and, in other locations and, dragging around even a moderate size amp was not in my plans. I did some shopping and, came up with the Micro Cube as my answer, WOW what a feature filled little powerhouse! I debated going to just a plain small practice amp but, after I tried one it reminded me of trying to play through an old transistor radio. Very bland boring sound and, only a push button to get an overdrive sound that sounded pretty bad. This Roland unit sounds Fantastic at 3w and, with only a 5" speaker, I don't know how they do it but, it's Great!! The convenience of battery power is something that I really enjoy also. Take it anywhere! The FX sound Super, amp models are a nice touch and, even a tuner. The 1/8" input is a nice touch to jam with backing tracks or any type of sounds. Taking this to lessons is sooo much more handier than a 30lb. amp. There is only a tone control but, it is really all you need to get the sound you want. The memory function is a handy feature so save preset sounds for each amp model. The only thing I haven't tried is to plug a Mic in and, check it out but, I definately will and, I'm betting that the results will be positive there also. I'm soooo glad I spent the extra dinero and, went with this amp. I'm very satisfied and, definately recommend this anyone looking for small portable amp for practice or any other reason to have a light weight amp that sounds really good. I don't think that I would run a bass through it but, at low volume I wouldn't be surprised that it could handle it. In general this is a great little amp. It is loud, but its frequency range is narrow. I would expect something so small to be weak on bass, but I am surprised at how poor the high frequency is. I have to turn the tone all the way up to make it sound like a regular amp. I will try different speakers and the line out into a different amp to see if the poor high end is either the speaker or amp. The headphone output sounds much better, so I believe the issue is not in the internal electronics. In general I would recommend this amp. So much that I am buying another to give to my son in college as a dorm amp. He is interested in the headphone feature, which sounds very good. As a practice amp this little thing does a great job. The effects are better on some settings than others. but I think there are more effects on this amp than other brands. The portability is great. The battery life it pretty good for how loud it is. With the line input you can not only play along to songs, unaffected by the guitar effects, but it turns your phone into a loud jam box. I've been looking for a great, clean amp that would really accent my guitar's natural sound. I first tried the Blues Junior which was nice but didn't have quite enough warmth and power behind it, I needed something more. I did my research and landed on this beautiful Princeton. It has everything that I was looking for. I am an experienced player but also prefer not to have a super complicated setup with switches and pedals and knobs; this Princeton keeps the focus solely on the tone and sound. Yes, there is a reverb knob which can add a little more, but I usually keep that off. What's great about getting an amp like this is you really get CLEAN, crisp open/clean channels and can really hear your axe sing. Because of that, it also allows your pedals to shine without being bogged down with too much of this or that, or in my opinion not having enough power behind the amplification. This is a fantastic amp after owning it for 5 months. I constantly wonder about getting rid of other amps and just playing this one all the time. It's a "just right" amp. It's extremely easy to get along with. It sounds good in any room, is less sensitive to placement in the room than other amps I've owned, it's easy to dial in with different guitars. The Reverb & Tremolo always seem just right and easy to adjust. It seemingly gets along with just about any pedal/effect you run into it, but you don't need any FX or pedals with this amp either if you don't want them. If I had to think of a negative it's the vintage style food switch that comes with it. You can't mount it on a pedal board because the back is just press fit and the cable doesn't detach. I usually just wrap up the cable and put the foot switch in the amp for transport. It's no surprise these have been popular for decades.Ben
I went back and forth between the Princeton Custom 68 and the 65 Reissue, and settled on the 65 as I will make better use of the clean headroom and 'pure' clean Fender tone (compared to the darker, snarlier sound of the 68). The amp is fairly light (compared to other Fender amps) and a compact size for transporting to gigs, it has plenty of headroom for small to medium-sized shows but is quiet enough for home recording. The tone is beautiful, clear and sparkling, with a very characterful spring reverb and a subtle but warm vibrato. It's a simple amp with 1 channel, no mid EQ control, no standby switch – but it has everything I ever actually need to use on an amp. It starts to break up around 6 on the dial, which is pretty loud in a small room, so if you're looking for a crunchy amp then this isn't for you.Robin M.

If u can't afford (like me) a henricksen or price like amp I recommend u think twice before getting a price like of this head (unless u get the heads with gain and reverb). I enjoy this head 4 jazz(mostly) and clean stuff. This would make an arch-top and semi-hollow jazz guitar sing it warm tones (depending on the pick ups on u ax or how the heads controls r set ). It's beautifully hand-wired in an effort to emulate the original, but using modern production techniques. It's definitely a true classic beauty with a nice subtle vintage look. The Jenson P10R Alnico speaker and its solid pine cabinet sound really great and for 12 watts the amp is amazingly loud. It has all the dreamy tube tremolo and spring reverb that Fenders amps are know for. There are several reissue versions of this amp and they all sound great, but each has a slightly different vibe. This 64 edition is definitely a gig and road worthy little amp that recreates a true classic amp, sounds great and should last a lifetime.
I've been playing guitar since a kid. My Dad used to own a guitar store where he was an amp technician. I'll always remember sneaking into his room when he wasn't home and playing his salmon pink Strat and Twin reverb amp. There was always a magic in them and they really inspired me. Fast forward 30 years and I've grown up just like him. Been playing professionally for a long time through some pretty nice gear but something in me always wanted to revisit that amp, it just had the perfect sounds I played lots of amps before choosing a Marshall 50w plexi as my amp of choice for gigging and it was good, no doubt a about that, played it for almost 15 years straight until one day buying that Twin I'd always so wished I also had. Found I played it far more than the plexi so actually ended up selling the Marshall and just sticking with the 65' reissue! It does everything the Marshall did and more I think. Playing them side by side before making the final decision to sell set my mind at ease because I couldnl get the same sounds from the Twin. Even did a little A/B recording with overdrive and no one could pick which one was which I play mainly classic rock and this amp is everything I'll ever need. Small wattage Amos always sound and feel small to me so was never interested in them, of it's too loud turn it down, the volume is far better than the plexi because that one sat on a hair trigger, really difficult to get a bedroom volume out of. The Twin is quote easy and pot smooth to use. Plexi goes from 0-almost full volume at half way to 1 on the dial. Love itJez
I received the amp yesterday and have only played it (both the vibrato and normal channel) for about half an hour in my living room, but I was so impressed that I wanted to go ahead and write a review, which I almost never do. I've been playing electric guitar almost 50 years and have owned many different amps, almost all Marshall or Fender, including a late 60s or early 70s 100 watt Marshall (no master volume), a mid 70s silver face Twin Reverb and Dual Showman, a 1987X 50 watt Marshall reissue, a '59 Bassman reissue (before the LTD version), a '65 Super Reverb reissue, a Twinolux, and a standard '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue. The only other amp I have currently is a wine red '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue (DRRI) with a P12Q Jensen speaker. The '65 DRRI has been one of my favorites. I like the 6V6 sound and I think it's hard to get a bad sound out of that amp. I really like the clarity of the 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb compared to my '65 DRRI. It is noticeably brighter than my '65 DRRI, but part of that may be because the '64 has a C12Q speaker while my current '65 DRRI has a P12Q speaker. Since reverb and vibrato work on both channels of this '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb, the vibrato channel is like having the bright switch on (it reminds me of the way my super reverb sounded with the bright switch on) and the normal channel is like having the bright switch off. I like the way both the reverb and vibrato work and sound on this '64 more than the '65 DRRI. The same guitar (a Strat with '69 custom shop pickups) has noticeably longer sustain when I play it through this '64 compared to my '65 DRRI. Some people have mentioned a possible problem with noise (hiss or hum) from this amp, due to the way the channels are connected together, but I hear virtually no noise at all from this amp, not when it is sitting still (with both normal and vibrato channels turned up to 3), and not when I turn any of the knobs. I wish I had bought this amp in the first place instead of the '65 DRRI.Kenneth

I’ve known about these for years but never pulled the trigger until now, I wished I would’ve gotten it sooner. I ordered the Yamaha on Saturday afternoon and it arrived on Tuesday morning, great job AMS! I opened it and immediately plugged in my SG. I was very pleased with the sounds from this amp. After watching many reviews I thought I’d skip the clean, crunch and lead channels, I went straight to the Brit hi and Modern channels and I wasn’t disappointed! Studio quality tone and very responsive to volume controls on the guitar. Most importantly, this little amp makes you want to play – highly recommend it!
Overall: overall – maybe the best sounding low wattage amp ever. only small difference in sound between this & a tube amp. weak point is lack of features. they really skimped. twice the price of other compared to other practice amps that have way more features. you're really extra paying for tone here.pro's – * truly terrific tones* even if you have a tube amp that sounds good at whisper volumes (i have a 15w egnater tweaker) it's so convenient to be able to play this on top of your desk.* clean and modern settings are fantastic. i don't use the other amp settings much, but they sound great as well. the only setting i don't like is brit hi.* effects sound good* tap tempo* good tuner* the features are weak* pricey – other practice amps have many more features. they sound pretty good themselves (just not quite as nice as this). so if features are important to you, get something else. digital amps these days all sound not bad to downright good.* are the tones here so much better that it's really worth double other companies' amps? honestly hard to say, but this one does sound the best* can't save settings* one knob control of all mod effects is really limiting* can use the software to tweak settings and effects, but as soon as you unplug, you lose them* max volume on delay is occasionally not enough. usually it's ok. but sometimes, you want a little more & doesn't have it* as mentioned, brit hi setting not that great* the name "modern" might be misleading. i mentioned that modern sounds good, but, it doesn't have enough gain to get you into mesa rectifier range. you're going to need a pedal for that.A
Overall: I have been wanting to leave a review of the THR5 for awhile now. Prior to purchasing it, I had used a 10-15 watt Orange Crush Amp & a Blackstar Debut amp. Neither of those 2 amps were exactly what I wanted but for the price, served a purpose. I was hesitant on purchasing the THR5 because it was twice as much. I have no regrets. If you have not had the chance to try the THR5 in person, video reviews will not do it justice. What I was looking for was a small amp that had sufficient effects built in so that I didn't need to hook up any pedals during an impromptu practice session. The Hall reverb is my favorite and was worth the price alone if it was the only reverb included. All of the amp models sound great, although I tend to only use the clean channel or crunch. Crunch can be toned down to remain clean but adds saturation without becoming distorted. Another bonus was that with the included software, additional compression and gate effects can be adjusted via a computer. These can be set as defaults for when after the amp is unplugged from the computer. I have used it with pedals and loopers as well. Its built well, metal casing. Aesthetically pleasing to sit on a shelf. Extremely lightweight and portable. Honestly this is the best practice/bedroom/portable amp that I have ever owned. I bought a Fender Champion XL 50 for a small light weight amp to bring to local jam sessions. I have to say I am not disappointed. I know there's no comparing solid state to tubesl when it comes to filling up a room with sound but this little amp cranks. It's closest competition is the Boss Katana and those are really nice. I like the ones I've played, but I'm really into that clean Fender sound and this amp has it in spades. You get the full range of cleans, from black or silver faces to tweeds. There's overdrive and high gain models in there too but as I said it's the cleans that sold me. It is a two channel amp, but I'm not sure why anyone would use the first channel as tall the digital goodies are on the second. That being said, the digital reverb in this amp has a bit of a whistle I don't like. Instead I used the chorus on the amp and a Boss Fender Reverb pedal. If your playing on a stage lugging around a forty pound tube amp may be the thing to do, but for sitting around a garage with friends this amp will save your back and please your ears.ADarkBard
I usually don't leave comments, but feel I must let the frustrated AMP user know, yes Jessica there IS a Santa Claus! Was looking for an AMP that was "SIMPLE" – On channel 1 ONLY the volume is usable, I didn't check but probably the Bass & treble too! On Channel 1 the gain control is set and turning the knob does nothing, and none of the FX are accessible! I was so busy checking out Channel 2 that I didn't check to see if Treble & Bass could be adjusted. You have 12 "Voice Settings" and 13 FX Selections. So I checked out all 12 Voice Settings combined with all 13FX settings – add this to checking these out with a single coil Strat and a Jazz/Full Shred Charvel DK24. I feel this is one of the BEST choices I have made in electric guitar choices! The AMP sound CLEAN!!!! I Imagine Channel 1 would be great with an Accoustic as well! Don't have one though! Channel 2 is GREAT and I don't need any more than it has to offer. It is so uncomplicated & stress free! If you are an expert guitar player and can concentrate more on AMP settings, rather than playing, then go for the Katana 50 MKII, or the VOX Cambridge. I was thinking hard on all three. When I got to GC I had pretty much decided on the Fender Champion 50XL. The VOX Cambridge is $150 to $160 more, with only $10 between the Fender & Katana. Since what is on the AMP is all my mind can handle, I decided to go with the Fender 50XL. It has to be on of the simplest AMPS to operate. I do have an Ibanez Tube Screamer, and if I have a need I can look at other pedals down the road. I do plan on getting a Cry Baby! Latter down the road I might get more pedals, but for right now this AMP has all I need. The Celestion Speaker sound GREAT! I couldn't be happier – it is as loud as I need – It's EASY to learn – NONE of the settings sounded muddy, muffled, or shrill. If I was going to get an AMP that needs a lot of downloading, I would have gone with the VOX Cambride. Glad I traded in my old AMP!Karl, M
Great overall amp. The obvious comparison is the Boss Katana 50. I tried both and I found I could dial in a sound I like from the Champion easier than the Katana. The Katana has way more features and the connect-ability. I prefer just plug in and playing which was far easier with the Champion. One of the largest selling points for me was the headphone jack feature for silent playing. The Champion has it right in front of the control panel and it's a 3.5mm jack. The Katana has one but its on the back and it's a 1/4inch jack which would require an adapter to 3.5mm. The location and the fact that it's 1/4in jack gave the Champion the edge. I also preferred that taller design of the Champion. It made it more comfortable to reach and adjust. Some of the cons are the knobs. especially for the "voice" and the "fx-select". A rotary knob would make it far easier to select the presets. Fender does provide a 3 color LED light that changes when you reach the next model or effect. However, a rotary knob that stops at the preset would be a better. Another con is that the reverb effect is combined with chorus and delay. I would much prefer it to be on it's own rather than combined. This is something that the Katana has. Overall the Champion is great for home use and I would recommend it to someone that wants a good amp that is easy to just plug and play. If you want more effects and enjoy experimenting then the Boss Katana would be a better choice.E. Bran

I just bought this amp with the Line 6 FBV short board; they work well together of course. The amp is a lot of fun with the looper and presets and the endless ways you can tweak your tone. I love the amp but there are a few things which could be better. You must use a 2 gig or smaller SD card or it reboots if you try to save to a bigger card. So just get a bunch of small Sd cards before they are unavailable–only a few places still have them–which is kind of a pain. It does record nice but I haven't figured out how to record the mic input and the guitar input at the same time, so I always have to do two tracks. There is a switch which switches the input for recording back and forth from mic input to guitar jack. With the short board you can turn the looper and presets on on the fly, but you must put the foot pedal in the recording mode, and when the FBV is in the record mode you have to switch it back to channel mode to switch different guitar tones. So to switch to a different guitar tone you have to do another track to reset it. Anyway, I just thought these few drawbacks could have been easily figured out and fixed. Hopefully the next generation can take the more available SD cards, record more than one track at a time, and make the FVB do all the functions in one mode. However, it's nice having all the gimmicks for having fun in one package. Even thought I give it four stars instead of five, it "is" worth the low price, and I would buy it again knowing what I know now.Songwritunfool
The Line 6 spider jam changed my life in many ways. First and foremost you can save every idea that you come up with! 2nd it helped me to become a songwriter, it has everything you need so you dont have to rely on other people showing up to practice. Its allowed me to put the time into writing that I never could before, because face it most people dont want to rehearse 7 days a week, or even 5 for that matter! If you are looking for a versatile and fun practice amp that you can record and gig with, this thing Rocks. I am primarily a bassist and just learning how to do leads on guitar and this amp fit the bill perfect. It does not have the warmth of a top of the line tube amp, but I did not need that as an intermidiate player. This thing has pretty awesome effects and tone varieties for about a couple hundred varieties and most I will never use. You can record, you can plug in a mic or a bass, you can jam tithe rhythm tracks, it has headphones so you play without waking the wife or neighbors, and a built-in tuner! That is just what I have discovered so far! The price makes this the perfect amp for practice, recording, and even small venue performances (half way up on the master and it is loud!) the only thing is it takes time to figure out and discover all the tones and capabilities, but that is also half the fun! This is so close to the vintage sound of an old plexi and vintage fender. Played it live at the lowest power setting, cranked up, and had no problems getting out front with little effort. Can't wait for EJ tone capsule I just ordered to arrive. This is fast becoming a favorite and that's over some I have loved. I guess being light to carry on top of great sound & price (got 20% off due to sale) makes this amp a great deal.Guitarted
In the late '60s – early '70s, I found "my sound" (Eric Clapton Live Cream for lead, "Live at Leeds" for rhythm) playing my 1961 SG Special thru a blackface Fender Bassman on 10. But by the mid '70s, it was TOO LOUD for the clubs I was playing in, so I traded the Bassman in on a SF master volume Twin Reverb. It was supposed to get "distortion at any volume" by diming the vibrato channel and keeping the master down, but the overdrive was scratchy and anemic. The "pull boost" on the master just made it more scratchy. So I ran an LPB-1 into the (dimed) normal channel and voila: "my sound" at any volume. In 1979 I hung it up for while. Fast forward to 2004, I wanted to get back into playing, but I was done with tubes (the Twin Reverb crapped out on me twice during live gigs). My shtick is straight into an amp (preferably a blackface Fender), controlling everything from the guitar. So I bought a used Deluxe 112, and after some tweaking got a fair approximation of what I heard thru the Twin Reverb. Did it sound just as good? No – but "close enough for rock 'n' roll." The 112 started having issues, so I bought a Deluxe 90 (basically the same amp) in mint condition, but it crapped out after only six months. Now I'm done with antique solid state amps. My shopping criteria: solid state, 1–12", decent onboard distortion, at least 60 watts, under 35 lbs. I tried out a Fender Champion 40, and was seriously underwhelmed. After a lot of online research, I narrowed it down to Quilter Aviator Cub (not enough power), Orange CR60 (too heavy), Blues Cube Stage. I got a brand new BC Stage on sale at a local shop. At first I was unable to dial in a good blackface sound, then I remembered: this is a tweed emulation (mid-forward). Blackface is mid-scooped. So I turned the midrange all the way down – nailed it. After playing thru it for a month, this is my assessment: Tube-like response, dynamics and "air." Decent overdrive from the Crunch channel, enough for my purposes (see at top) – but not enough for metal. Not as "fizzy" as the Fenders, but it's still there. Cleans up good from the guitar. "Boost" button just adds more fizz. Good edge-of-breakup with the Clean channel volume up. Good reverb. The dual-channel feature does nothing for me, but some people seem to like it. The power scaling works well, and is handy for going from "loud practice" to "bedroom" without touching the other controls, but the amp seems to "open up" better at the same volume with the wattage up and the master down. You're supposed to be able to add "power amp breakup" by cranking the master, but I don't hear it. Turning the Crunch volume up and the master down adds a hair more distortion, but it's muddier. All in all – everything I expected and a bit more. Four stars.
In my opinion, there is no way in the world this amp is worth the price. If – like the original Blues Cubes – this amp was less than 50% of the current price, my review would be much more favorable. That said, price is a very relevant to a review, and more specifically, whether the features warrant a high price tag. In this case, my answer is absolutely not. Being familiar with the previous generation of Blues Cube amps, and liking a few of the additional features on the newer version, I decided to take a chance and buy one of these. As expected from most any Roland amp, the clean sound is great, and there's good bottom end. That's the good news. Far as the features: the boost and tone switches available for each channel were nice additions – particularly the boost. To me, the Dual Tone feature which allows you to combine both channels was pointless; it felt like a waste of resources. The tiny bit of tonal variance available using dual tone did not add much to the amp. As for the power attenuator and drive channel, this is where the Blues Cube was most disappointing. The crunch channel wasn't very crunchy at all. And I had no unrealistic expectations for metal tones or anything. All I wanted was a good bluesy overdrive. Compared to my inexpensive and old Peavey Bandit 112, the overdrive on the Blues Cube was non-existent. While the amp has a fine clean tone, the tube tone claims are mostly hype. I like and respect Roland as a company, but this is nowhere close to being worth the asking price.V

Hello. i'm selling this mesa boogie mark five 25 amp head in sea foam green / tan. looks fantastic in person! this is a fantastic sounding amp that you can get a wide variety of tones out of. sounds great at both low and high volume. i do not have the original box for this amp. the eq button on the footswitch recently stopped working. the channel switch still works. i haven't opened it up, but i'm sure its a loose connection and would be an easy fix.

I was really surprised at how good this amp sounds. Years ago I tried Line 6 and was not at all happy with the tone; but this is another story. It does take me awhile to dial in a specific classic rock tone, but when I do, it sounds better than any other amp that I've tried. I have tried the Marshall Code, Blackstar id Core, Vox Valvetronix, Boss Katana; as well as some all tube amps. The only other amp that is a close 2nd is the Fender Mustang GTX; also a great amp. The Spider V is fairly easy to operate. It offers lots of choices for amp models and cabinets. I like that it has variations of a mic'd cabinet. The parametric eq is a plus. I haven't played around too much with the effects yet, so I can't comment on that. The only negative thing I could say is that when you're editing a preset and want to hear how it sounds before you save it, you only have a short time before it goes back to the Home Screen. This really is a small price to pay for the quality of the amp and all the versatility it has. I like the App too. Musicians Friend got me a great on this as well; and their agent is following up making sure that I'm satisfied. The funny thing is that I came across this by accident. I placed an order for a Peavey amp that was on back order. I called Peavey multiple times, but they never returned my call. I also emailed them, but they didn't respond to that either. As far as I'm concerned, Peavey doesn't have any customer support.crrkr
Been playing about a year, so my review is from the perspective of a complete newbie. The things I like- Lots of presets, mobile app functions, computer interface, and loads of user created effects available. Nice and loud, but no real basis of comparison to say if clarity is better or worse than other comparable amps. Don't likes- The micro-usb interface. I had to get an adapter and it's just not as good a connection as nearly anything else would be. IMHO, micro-usb is far too flimsy. Connecting to PC is far more problematic than just using the spider mobile app. It's probably a little more complicated than it should be for a beginner, but it's feature rich for the money.Nic T
I had a Line 6 120w amp for years that I regrettably sold a while ago and was looking for another amp. I looked at all the amp reviews I could find and decided that the new Katana was the way to go. I got the Katana home and absolutely loved it but the second day I had it it started a really loud buzzing that I couldn't stop. It probably was an easy fix but the fact is the amp was way too powerful for my purposes and their software wasn't compatible with the new Catalina OS. I returned and started looking again. I saw the 60w Spider V and the price was excellent so I made an on the spot decision to buy another Line 6 and I'm really glad I did. The tones this amp can get are incredible. There are so many amp models and cabs that you can dial in pretty much any tone you want from a crispy snapback country clean to the most vicious heavy metal and everything in between. You can use the presets as they are or you can use them as a baseline and tweak to your own liking or you can start from scratch and build your own rig from the ground up. The controls are intuitive and easy to use but there are some features where you'd have to be a professional to really know how to use or even care to use. The software and the mobile app are so easy to use and give you all the options at your fingertips. The amp comes with a lot of presets that I find are completely useless but there are a lot that are excellent as I already talked about. There are only four empty slots for your own custom presets and I wish there were more but if you use the mobile app you can have your own tone library on there. I bought the FBV3 foot controller so that gives me a lot of flexibility to have various effects. One of the limitations is the lack of good effects though. There's enough that if you work at it you can get a decent sound but there could be some better ones. Overall I would recommend the amp. Don't listen to the naysayers or the amp snobs, it's a quality amp and extremely versatile.Just Plain Joe

overall I really like this amp. the dirty channel has a good crunch. Not a very tainted sound, which I like a lot. Clean channel is not real chimy like some, but nice and clean. the face plate is also black, unlike the 30 watt which is easier to see. The issue is the channel switching. While some amps are known for a load pop, this is quite the opposite, and I am guessing the pop is what they were trying to avoid. this one actually drops in volume and then comes back up between channels. Deal breaker. I can't use this live if it cuts out. Really wanted to have this kicking around for a second amp. But I will be returning this.brian
First one arrived and the overdrive channel sounded awful. Made arrangements to return it and the process went quick, I had a new one a week after sending the bad one back. The second one turned out as advertised. You can dial in a wide range of tones and has that beautiful tube sound. The reverb is just a tad weak but still ok. Also, effects pedals sound great. I had a 50 watt 6L6 guitar head and sold it only to regret it later. I saw this one on sale and I took a chance. Glad I did. Disclaimer: I only use it for a pedal platform, although I have tried the gain channel. It's "ok" (not great) but to use the amp that way you'll really have to work with the both channels to achieve unity volume. As a clean channel pedal platform it's great. Like others have said the reverb is lacking but I usually just leave it on 10:00 for ambience. This amp is LOUD and can easily hang with a large band if needed. As far as reliability, time will tell, but it seems well made IMO.john

Huge sounding and a lot of power for such a small amp. The Spark Control App gives you loads of choices from classic sounds to the most modern of amps out there today. You also have tons of effects to use in conjunction with all of these modeled amp choices. All of these possibilities can be saved as your own personal presets which can endlessly be tweaked to make you sound and play your best. You can also use the Jam Along feature which syncs to iTunes, Spotify, etc. while also displaying the chord changes as you play. Used it only for practice. Unusable for live performance. Every update was a fiasco and after 11 months, it only works as a Bluetooth speaker as the Amp section gave up. Google that issue and found it happens to many other users. Defective chip and Positive Grid helpdesk is not responding.Cory
The amp is awesome. Well built and solid, very pleasant to look at, easy to use and the sound! Oh man, the sound of that little amp is just beyond belief. Full and rich, it fills the room as though it were five times the size. With the app on my android phone, fine tuning the sound is easy and intuitive, and you can save your sounds as presets if you wish. But even without using the app, the presets that ship with the amp are simply stellar. In my opinion, the amp is well worth the price.Richard L.

It's beautifully hand-wired in an effort to emulate the original, but using modern production techniques. It's definitely a true classic beauty with a nice subtle vintage look. The Jenson P10R Alnico speaker and its solid pine cabinet sound really great and for 12 watts the amp is amazingly loud. It has all the dreamy tube tremolo and spring reverb that Fenders amps are know for. There are several reissue versions of this amp and they all sound great, but each has a slightly different vibe. This 64 edition is definitely a gig and road worthy little amp that recreates a true classic amp, sounds great and should last a lifetime.
I've been playing guitar since a kid. My Dad used to own a guitar store where he was an amp technician. I'll always remember sneaking into his room when he wasn't home and playing his salmon pink Strat and Twin reverb amp. There was always a magic in them and they really inspired me. Fast forward 30 years and I've grown up just like him. Been playing professionally for a long time through some pretty nice gear but something in me always wanted to revisit that amp, it just had the perfect sounds I played lots of amps before choosing a Marshall 50w plexi as my amp of choice for gigging and it was good, no doubt a about that, played it for almost 15 years straight until one day buying that Twin I'd always so wished I also had. Found I played it far more than the plexi so actually ended up selling the Marshall and just sticking with the 65' reissue! It does everything the Marshall did and more I think. Playing them side by side before making the final decision to sell set my mind at ease because I couldnl get the same sounds from the Twin. Even did a little A/B recording with overdrive and no one could pick which one was which I play mainly classic rock and this amp is everything I'll ever need. Small wattage Amos always sound and feel small to me so was never interested in them, of it's too loud turn it down, the volume is far better than the plexi because that one sat on a hair trigger, really difficult to get a bedroom volume out of. The Twin is quote easy and pot smooth to use. Plexi goes from 0-almost full volume at half way to 1 on the dial. Love itJez
I received the amp yesterday and have only played it (both the vibrato and normal channel) for about half an hour in my living room, but I was so impressed that I wanted to go ahead and write a review, which I almost never do. I've been playing electric guitar almost 50 years and have owned many different amps, almost all Marshall or Fender, including a late 60s or early 70s 100 watt Marshall (no master volume), a mid 70s silver face Twin Reverb and Dual Showman, a 1987X 50 watt Marshall reissue, a '59 Bassman reissue (before the LTD version), a '65 Super Reverb reissue, a Twinolux, and a standard '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue. The only other amp I have currently is a wine red '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue (DRRI) with a P12Q Jensen speaker. The '65 DRRI has been one of my favorites. I like the 6V6 sound and I think it's hard to get a bad sound out of that amp. I really like the clarity of the 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb compared to my '65 DRRI. It is noticeably brighter than my '65 DRRI, but part of that may be because the '64 has a C12Q speaker while my current '65 DRRI has a P12Q speaker. Since reverb and vibrato work on both channels of this '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb, the vibrato channel is like having the bright switch on (it reminds me of the way my super reverb sounded with the bright switch on) and the normal channel is like having the bright switch off. I like the way both the reverb and vibrato work and sound on this '64 more than the '65 DRRI. The same guitar (a Strat with '69 custom shop pickups) has noticeably longer sustain when I play it through this '64 compared to my '65 DRRI. Some people have mentioned a possible problem with noise (hiss or hum) from this amp, due to the way the channels are connected together, but I hear virtually no noise at all from this amp, not when it is sitting still (with both normal and vibrato channels turned up to 3), and not when I turn any of the knobs. I wish I had bought this amp in the first place instead of the '65 DRRI.Kenneth

I picked up a 'B Stock' from PMT great condition/product. Fantastic Amp! great with pedal boards. When the revies say its Loud they're not exaggerating! It's Loud! Really Loud! Ar home running a GX100 through the front at half volume I had to set the Amp to 0.6 (not even 1) at 5W, it has 2 more settings 5/15/50. If your looking for a Loud Amp work great tones without spending £000's this is a great choice. I wanted that classic Marshall tone and power, but love the versatility of the modern effects/pedal boards. After reading lots of reviews from various sources all 4.7/5 4.9/5. I'd agree 4.9/5. The 3 volume settings of the attenuator mean you can use it at home, with drums/SML venues. The clean tones are… to behold, warm buttery smooth. Add a pedal board to the front of the amp it handles ot perfectly. Best in class at this price point.
Great amplifier, especially for the money. First of all it is an amazing pedal platform amp with nice bass and mid response. Everything I've run into it sounds really good, and it's near breakup gain is gain on 10 and boost off. It is most like a JTM45, it has a lot more bass and more active tone controls than later Marshall amplifiers like the JCM900 I previously owned. It doesn't overdrive too much on its own, but if you push it with a booster, it does pretty well. It is loud, even in the low power setting, and to really get it to drive, you need to push the power amp. It also doesn't seem to have as much drive as I remember from trying a 50 watt version, but that may have been the guitar more than the amp. Great value, I would recommend it to anyone looking for what I just described. If you want something that sounds like a Super Lead, Super Bass, or JCM800, this is not the right thing to buy. If you want a great pedal platform or early Marshall sound, you can't beat it.Craig
I've had My Marshall Origin for about 6 months and I've been pleasantly surprised. I've been a Les Paul/Marshall guy for 40 years and I have the hearing loss to prove it but this Marshall has it all. This versatile 20 watt head is the perfect combination of versatility and guts.This Amp is perfect for pedals as it great grand daddies were, I use an J Rockett Archer Ikon Klon clone, An OCD a Tone City King of Blues and an original Electro harmonics LPB-1 booster. I can go from crystal clear bell like tones to Ace's plexi grind to the verge of jCM 800 tones or straight in crank the Gain and get that sweet traditional Marshall tone and attack. Unlike the Marshalls of old the EQ section greatly influences the color of this Head and along with the tilt control which replaces the need to jump channels from the Hi and Lo inputs its all there. The addition of the switchable effects loop is a huge plus as is the gain/Boost control which gives you that little extra edge for leads. Running the amp on full and using your guitars volume and tone controls gives you a lot of versatility as well. The adjustable power out put feature is nice for quiet practice but I prefer to use my Bugera PS-1 attenuator and keep my amp volume on 10, just a personal preference. A suggestion, I've used this head with 1×12 and 2×12 cabinets an it sounds good but when i finally plugged it into a 4×12 this amp took on a whole new personality. The 4×12 let this amp breathe and with the EH LPB-1 driving the front end and a little reverb I had ACE's Kiss alive tone dead on by using the gain boost and a little color from various pedals the tone possibilities a vast. All in all this amp would be a great deal at twice the price, marshall once again did it right.Miggs

I love the looks of my little Fender tweed amp and it lives on a table in my home office. I like it for my workbench to test guitar wiring. Most of all, it's become my go to amp when I just want to kick back and play an acoustic-electric or an electric guitar…anywhere. It is truly portable. By the way, I play Taylor's, Gibson's, and Fenders and they sound fine through it. You can dial in a decent clean sound or dirty it up a bit, but come on guys, what do you expect from 2-3" speakers and a 9volt battery. Personally, I think it sounds good. I have tube amps for all the sounds I need. Sometimes I just want to make some noise and I can move the little tweed amp to the edge of the table, plug a 36" cable into the amp and guitar and turn it on and play. Pretty simple. By the way, it also has a 1/4" jack for headphones. It will take a 9volt power supply but I don't have one. It's been living on the Fender battery that came with the amp and doing fine. By the way, it's lightweight but solidly built. It's a plastic looking toy. It's real tweed baby.Bart
I really like this because of how it looks. It is functional, but there's basically limited control. Right now it's in my kitchen. I can plug in a guitar and hear myself play drills but trust me, the sound quality is so bad you don't want to push this unless your hearing is extremely twisted somehow. The controls will confound you. Your money could be better spent, but Musician's Friend has it for less than anyone, anywhere else I've seen it, but if the few extra duckets aren't too big an issue for you and you like to collect stuff related to your favorite thing in life (anything music) I would buy it again just to have it to look at. But if it will be the only amp you'll have you'll be sorry. Maybe look at a Pignose. Those are cool and the sound will make you happy with your purchase. Theyre battery operated, lightweight and more. This thing isn;t much more than a toy for children of all ages though except a child might not be inspired to pursue guitar playing after hearing it just once. Too discouraging, it would be, I'm positive. If you don't have another amp and money's tight save a little longer or finance the Pignose. This thing is just a pig, period. But it's cool looking.WFnN
