Best Amp For Guitar And Vocals (Jan 2023 Update)

I'm a Fender fan to the core. I love their electric guitars and amps but their Amps aren't even affordable anymore. They've completely out priced themselves and either you are going to pay for a severely overpriced bare bones amp or a severely overpriced amp with far more electronics than a lot of us care to deal with. This is a great sized combo amp that's easy to use and has a great sound and plenty of power and all at a great price!!! There is no reason Fender couldn't do more of this…combo's that aren't easy to use with plenty of effects and a fair price for blue collar musicians. I used a Fender Princeton Chorus combo this same size mic'd through a sound system for over two decades and it started having issues. This was the closest amp I could get (and afford). The 100 has everything you need in a combo amp and at a fraction of the price of everything else Fender makes. Buy it! You won't be disappointed!Josh

I bought this amp because my gig amp died a cyber twin 2-12s 100 watts that was about 16 years old. I have had many Fender amps they were great. I do country and 50s and 60s rock and roll. I figured 100 watts would put it out there and it does. At performing volume, the distortion is a pure heavy metal on the clean channel. Mine is not much good for high volume for my type of music. I have an old champion 110 75 watt that I will be using It has worked for me when the others were down. Not sure what to do.stev_majo

Sound: With the second channel .First it had the twin reverb and super sonic voicing with a chain loop for pedals I was set on that alone. When it got to the house and realized I didn't need my pedal chain and it sounds amazing even though ill still use my pedals here and there. The bassman, tweeds , Princeton all clean or dirty are amazing to play . again to get those sounds with out the tubes and speakers is amazing.. You get volumes that punch against you that are clear without any nasty whitenoise or unwanted sounds. the dirty settings added with the compression build in make all that possible. Outta all my guitars I enjoy to plug into this amp .My 63 firebird , g400 s.g. and my jaguar Ease of Use: Its real easy for me to get the sounds I need .I'm well aware of all the amps they used for the voicing.For new players it might take a little to understand but with no time you'll understand how to dial it in and add the right effects to the amp models to get those amazing fender amps . Quality: Only had it for a week but as for holding it up and down 3 flights of stairs at the studio in Philadelphia id say the strap is well build . Speakers have not blown but I have not had to dial all the way up amps loud as it is half way . Value: yes it is im surprised its not another $100 more.Wish more companies would do this. Manufacturer Support: No problems yet . But in the past fender has always been amazing to me. Overall: (DON'T LET THE $399 TRICK YOU)When dialed up there are so many different fender amps you have here. First off the blackface style clean channel is just amazing. id say that its a twin or deluxe especially when you dial in the spring reverb only thing missing to call it that are the speakers/tubes but fender has made it very clear they can accumulate that sound with out the tubes . I know the tubes will make a difference but not much to this amp unless you have the trained ear for tubes you can't tell.The 2nd channel with all the voice modeling Id say every setting is 99.7 spot on with the models . I love this amp .After watching a few videos online of the 100 I decided to go with it .My friend has the champion 50 so I have already played through this style of amp. When I saw the 2×12 combo version with a double channel pedal it was set in stone . I love combos more than any kind of amp . I came on zZounds looking for an amp to hit the road to the higher states of the new England area of the states in November and December and a long ride from New Jersey to Chicago and Milwaukee in January . the amazing price for a well build and sounding amp there was no way i wasn't gonna leave the website with out another toy.So after adding to the card I headed over to guitars and ordered the squier 70s classic vibe jaguar .One of my favorite things about this amp is I don't have to change out the speakers to get that sound I want. its easy for me to use because I know how to dial in the right sounds to get the sound of the amps in amp unit.Mike

If you're expecting an amazing Marshall sound, you might want to invest in some of the bigger amps Marshall has to offer. If you think you can get a concert level sound out of this little guy, you will not be the happiest person. However, that level of "high" expectation would not be very reasonable or even realistic for such a little amp. This is a very cute, small amp that will help you plug your guitar so you can practice quietly in any room in your house without annoying your wife. It will distort if you crank the volume all the way out, and if you're used to the full sound of a bigger Marshall (like I do) it might make you feel like you're hearing your guitar over an old telephone (just my opinion). However, if you calibrate your instrument volume & tone you can find a happy medium. With that said, for the price it is a very nice solution to practice and if the sound seems too weak for you, you have the choice of putting headphones. I personally use it just for practice on the fly, it serves it purpose, but then again I was not expecting the best sound output. So I am happy with the purchase.BeeZee

It's basically a toy amp. I can see it being used as a portable amp for non-serious performance. Personally, I like it for a quick jam and for (relatively) quiet practice in my apartment setting. Won't disturb my neighbors but it does get noticeable at the highest volume. That and the overdrive knob are the two main controls. By default it just does a clean sound but overdrive lets you toggle in some gain for that distortion. It has a good look that definitely models after its bigger brothers.Rick

I don't know what some of you guys expect from this thing, but be realistic: it's an inexpensive 5 inch tall, 1 watt amp. It's not designed for anything but sitting in a chair and entertaining yourself or a couple of people. Within that context, I enjoy this thing and sometimes get it off the shelf and play around with it for awhile. Also, when I owed somebody a 1 minute long riff for his podcast and my main amp was getting some regular tech service, I plugged my American Standard Strat into this thing, mic'd the amp, used the OD channel with the volume and tone both on 10, played the part, then added tons of bass, reverb, and chorus to it in post, and it sounded great and nobody ever knew that I recorded the part using a 5 inch tall amp. It is what it is as long as you don't expect the world.Steve

This amp has a wide range of settings to dial in whatever sound you need for various types of guitars and pickups. I was a little disappointed in the volume limitation when plugging in my acoustics with passive pickups- they just didn't have any punch even with the dial turned up, but that was corrected somewhat with an XLR>RCA converter jack to boost the signal. Also the pre-amp in the effects box I have does the same thing. It produced great tone and presence on an electric 12 string, classical, and irish bouzouki which all have active pickups. What really impressed me was how it handles vocal and instrument together. No feedback and plenty of headroom. I'm glad I settled on this model to meet my needs rather than some of the others out there of the same capabilities. The looper is another fun feature that allows you to lay some percussive rhythm down to play along to, or a chord progression to build upon. Another plus is its small footprint and light weight for portability. I plan to be using it in small rooms where it fills the space without being over bearing. It is a perfect tool for solo performances, but would probably hold its own in a small group as well.super-perfundo

I am very pleased with this amplifier. It is very small, (like a large lunchbox) and light. 8 AA batteries can power this or you can use the included ac/dc inverter. After playing with the mic input and plugging my Taylor; its obvious that this is the easiest to use and best sounding acoustic amp I own. Subtle nuances in voice and guitar are replicated so clearly, I forget which part is already recorded on the looper and what is the live part I am playing! No kiddin, its that good! Speakin of the looper, that is probably the best practice feature of any piece of gear I own. Nothing fancy, and 40 seconds tops, but it is falling off a log ez and really does give you enough time to lay down a basic track. My guitar has never sounded so crisp and clean, ambience/chorus on both channels are very high quality! Don't let the size fool you, this isn't a toy, but I guarantee if you get one, you will wanna play for hours! Few pieces of gear have ever been such a pleasant surprise!wdc27909

This amp is truly one of the classics! I have been using a JC-120 since the 80's! It is a very musical amp and good for any type of music. That is a statement of why is has been around for a very long time. I have read some of the other reviews about how noisy this amp can be. This is true but get a noise gate or use the othe rchannel that is without the chorus. For people who love heavy metal two words Boss Wazsa Ds-1 X and OD-1X will get you that Marshal Sound. For Blues players Sd-1X , OD-1X or Boss driver 2. This amp is designed to be used with effects and that is what makes it so versatile.Hank

Words are pretty meek in describing this amp. The best clean sound anywhere. Huge tonal presence bass is gigantic but not boomy just powerful and clear and that's with all tone controls at 12 noon. There's so much room to tweak. And then the chorus channel un-real sound of acoustic chorus. It's a trademark sound instantly recognized. No pedal can give you this chorus sound. It's a tank super build quality has not changed since the 80's and at 75 lbs you can't just grab and go but comes with casters thank goodness. I have used it with overdrive guitar a few times and it sounded unlike any other amp. It's not at all your British scooped sound. But the clean sound is why I bought this. The Roland JC 120 has one of the best clean tones I have ever heard from an amp. It sounds amazing with the built in chorus effect engaged along with reverb. One thing to know about this amp is that it is designed to be used at higher volumes. That makes it ideal for live gigs. The amp has a slight hissing sound that can be heard when it is used at bedroom-appropriate volume. However, the hissing sound is not as noticeable in louder environments like live shows. I would recommend the Roland JC 120 to musicians who are looking for an amp with a fantastic clean tone to play at gig ready volume.Pari Dark

I have searched for something like what this amp delivers for many years. I am not a bass player. I work on them but don't play them. I work with older players, I'm 73 , so heavy metal is not my thing. This amp delivers all that I need or want and it's effects are amazing. This Amplifier is all I will ever need for my electric guitar. I love the sound! I have to be careful with my neighbors as they can hear it and I don't have it turned up that loud. I am 58 and don't like things that loud but when playing I might get a little louder than normal. It has a lot of different settings and I pretty much stick with a basic sound. Open the box, tested with a Katana 2×12 cab, sound was awesome. Same goes to a Laney 2×12 but sounded much more better. Considering the size of the Amp1, the Nanotube is a real deal. Drives is authentic. Growls like the full tube amp head. Cleans nicely from high to low gain. Tried again with a Yamaha powered speaker and speaker out to a BluBox, cuts through with the band easily. Overall: I've been looking for portable, potent, Plexi and then some Marshall tone and kept trying little modelers. Most sounded fine, but I struggled to get them right. I have so many great Plexi sounds…and then some…in my Kemper, but wanted something to fit in a gig bag. I remembered having seen Jack Gardiner's video about this and LOVING the sounds he got. When I played this at NAMM 2020, Hall D was just too loud to really appreciate it. But I remembered liking it. So I ordered it. Wow! Let me tell you, I like it so much I just ordered the Remote1 switch for it to use it for more than just a travel option! This thing sounds phenomenal!More often than not, clean channels sound like afterthoughts. This amp has a beautiful clean channel and when combined with the boost gives you excellent, chimey, pushed clean and Vox-like tone. Henning Paulie had Thomas Blug on and they got really close to his Morgan AC30 style amp. Frighteningly close! Well, it really does it! And the dynamics of this amp are incredible. Even with the boost engaged, I can roll the volume down and clean up the vintage and classic channels nicely! I have a lot of amps. This hangs with the big boys easily. And it takes pedals as well as any big amp. I am so happy I can stop looking for a plexi for my gig bag. zZounds has a great return policy. It won't hurt to try it. I picked this up for my son so he could practice around the house. Killer stocking stuffer! When the son is away the dad will now play. I started playing my Mustang Bass through this and it did the job. It's a small amp, not a practice amp. This is perfect for camping trips, rocking at the office or kicking it in the backyard. Oh yeah and you can plug in 1/4 headphones and keep the concert to yourself. It runs on a 9-volt battery or you can plug in a 9-volt adapter.SERGIO

Took a chance on this and purchased it without every playing it. Watched video reviews on it and gave it a shot. Yes, I know that it's small in size, smaller than a kids lunchbox but I hoped it'd produce quality sound and what I got was muddy sounds at increased volumes. It's not clear sounding and my goal to play through an amp is to sound good and I felt if I actually played this in front of people, the muddyness would make me sound amateurish. So, for what you pay for this, yes, you get amplified but it's not real great quality, unless you're a metal player because you don't get a clean sound from this. I rate this 3 stars because it's convenient to have a portable battery operated tiny amp that you can plug into and get sound from, however, the quality almost makes you not even want to play it.Jesse

This ain't no micro cube or vox. This less than 20$ & runs on 1 9v battery or 9v plug in the wall.(transformer not included)& Holy Friggin' Smokes does this baby perform.Monster overdrive tone & super bright, clean tone.Headphone input.Probably exceeds 60 decibels,which is beyond city ords. could get U a fine it's so damn loud. My Strat Squire sounds soooo Fender good out of this lil sucka & my electric/acoustic, sooo crisp.Ultra light to carry around.I've been using the JOYO mini,I love it,plug in,no chord,fun but this Fender mini is a bit more.More tone options and louder.I've yet to find out how quick it eats batteries. The JOYO burns them up fast.Get the rechargeables.Also the JOYO has an MP3 input.This doesn't. I run guitar strap thru the handle so the chord is like non-existent or U can old school it and have a 10 or 20 ft chord.So light it can be pulled over by the chord.These mini amps also pick up radio signals. I was excited to procure this battery/ac amp at a fair price, so I bought a used one listed as "great condition." These amps are hard to find on the used market and ZT told me in an email production has ceased for this model until Q2 2022. The amp was indeed in semi-great condition except for a small puncture in the foam of the 5" speaker which buzzed. Quality control was obviously lacking as it's noticeable while playing the bass strings on an electric guitar irrespective of where the ZT's tone control is set. Accessing the speaker simply requires removing the grill without tools and applying a bit of speaker glue to the damaged part of the cone. I did it myself instead of returning it to GC, which I would have pondered if ZT wasn't horrendously backlogged. These amps sound stellar for home, busking, or as a personal stage monitor. I have two of them for a stereo pedalboard and Rick-O-Matic guitar. I have a DI on my pedalboard. I wouldn't mic the ZT. Conversely, the active tone control has excessive bass for the small speaker to handle, and I suspect many amps result in ripped cones if played loudly with the tone control at less than 12:00.Ed

The sweet analog tone coming from this little guy really inspires me to play & practice. Great cleans but the real surprise is it has the best grind of any solid state amp I ever played when pushed. I was well aware of the dimensions of the thing before it arrived, but opening the box and actually holding it is still pretty shocking. I found it to be small on a scale that it left it hard to believe that it would be functional for more than a practice amp. I accepted that the small size could be handy but expectation of sound quality was suddenly diminished. I stand corrected. The sound is excellent. It is definitely more than a curiosity that is smaller than a breadbox. It will put out a substantial amount of volume with a substantial low end range that was a tremendously satisfying surprise. For my modest needs, it far exceeds my expectations. I would like to note, for jazz guitarists I think you'll find this to be a surprisingly versatile and capable tool, not just a toy.Bliss

The luxury of having a small, reliable amplifier that's loud enough for small gigs is incredible. I run it through a small, closed-back 1×12 cabinet. There's not a TON of headroom, but it can EASILY be heard over a drummer, even if the drummer is loud. Its natural tone is bland as can be, so it's best to use an equalizer pedal, and possibly even a compressor pedal to make it sound a bit more tube-like if that's your schtick. Here's the bottom line: you buy this product for convenience. It's not a recording amp. You buy it because you can get it from gig to gig easily. Because you don't want to hurt your back or worry about your tube amp dying on you. Because it sounds just good enough. Practically speaking, you don't need more power than this. If your gig is big enough for you to need more headroom, your gig probably has a PA system that you can mic your amp into. Reduce your stage volume, save your hearing, and make it easier for your sound engineer to get your levels right. Goal: make your job easier. This product will make your job easier.Tuna

First off, the base clean tone of this thing is very not bad. Well-rounded & full bodied. However, the base tone will be disengaged of powering a preamp-type pedal. I use a Diezel VH4 overdrive pedal with the 44 as a preamp/power amp setup, and I like the tone as much if not better than any solid-state amp head out there. But if you're trying to get tube punch out of it, a 212 cab is about as much as you can push before you start losing oomph. It will drive a 412, but you'll lose some punch along the way. A great fly rig solution if you like showing up with a guitar and a pedalboard & using a house cab, or a no-brainer if you tire of hauling too much gear.Ninja Joe

This amp is definitely worth the average $40 to $60 you can find it used for. The presets are great for pulling up classic amp sounds with the flick of a switch without having to fiddle a lot with gain controls and such. Makes a perfect fit for a beginner's practice amp that doesn't want to fuss with a lot of overwhelming controls or practice/recording amp for the more seasoned player who wants an "in the ballpark" clean, blues or hard rock/metal sound while laying rough tracks or practicing. Still working with the modeling feature, easy to understand but hard to figure its worth. The amp has decent loudness for its size, it's well finished and all the switches are clearly labeled. I'm glad to have it, perfectly adequate for practice and small room use. Not too heavy or large. Based on a friend's recommendation, I purchased a new Boss Katana 100 MK 2 in June 2021. The first thing that impressed me was it's power…it seemed to be a real 100 watts in a portable and lightweight package. I was able to dial in some useful tube-like tones right from the start with the clean channel. The Katana warmed up quickly to single coil or hum bucking pickups. The tone "variations" are also very useful for dialing in the right sounds to your liking. The delay adds the right amount of sparkle to your overall sound…very cool! Unfortunately, I was not able to get much help from the Boss Tone Studio when I downloaded it to the amp. (The response was: "Amp not connected"). Another disappointment is no Boss Tone Studio for iOS users…really guys? The required Boss foot switch is another issue…look online to see pedal "hacks" that use standard one-button or two-button formats. (Save a few bucks with a regular pedal). All in all: I'm very pleased with the amp. The line-in is a great feature to use with backing tracks along with the headphone jack for late night practicing. The basic amp tones has a realistic tube texture that reminds me of Marshall, Fender or Vox models.Scotty, M.

I have had the 50 watt for several months which is a great amp, but decided I wanted more foot switching options provided by the GA-FC controller. I figured if I was to buy the 100 watt it might as well be a 2X12. The 100 2X12 sounds awesome. And it is really loud to play at home even on the .5 watt setting. I'm tired of messing with tube amps and effect pedals so the Boss Katana series is just what I need. I have not dived in to the software and deep settings on either amp yet. These are apparently had to get. SAM Ash had it on backorder from Boss. The web and phone support at SAM Ash is great. Chris from phone support helped me complete the order and was super knowledgeable and helpful throughout. He even called me back a couple of times to update status and follow up once it was delivered. Oh… And the 2X12 is way heavier and bigger than the 1X12.Pupster

First of all, being able to save 128 of your perfectly dialed in presets with an all-tube amp is so amazing. One feature I really like is that as you move into different banks, it will keep your sound your playing on until you select a preset in your new bank. I own this amp, I've done a few gigs and recordings with it and it sounds incredible. I highly recommend using a cab with vintage 30s in it.. I think you'll get the best tone with those speakers. All the channels are great, I use the clean, lead and ultra the most.. but only because the crunch isn't my style. Sparkly clean channel. Tons of great, heavy, clear distortion from both lead and ultra channels. The digital built in effects are great.. the only downside is the reverb is digital and I prefer a spring reverb. But with all the other qualities of the amp, eliminating other pedals, giving me the best tone I've had, and giving me instant access to my favorite sounds, possibly getting a spring reverb pedal in the future is no big deal. I am nowhere near famous, but you would never guess that by my soon to be moth-balled rig. I use to lug, and get quite a work out doing so, Mesa's Roadking, Triple Rec, Triaxis, Mark IV and Studio Preamp amps with 2 Simul-Class 90/90 power amps and get this, 4 Recto Stereo 4×12 cabs with 2 Randall CS215 ( 2 x 12 + 15) cabs with a 22 space rack system, plus midi controllers out the butt. Thats a lot of gear to drag out to play for a few hours but I have been through so many amps trying to down size and STILL get my tone. Everytime I would buy something, it would sound great until I tried to gig with it and then I would hate it and start looking for something else. My search is over though with my recent purchase of the H&K Switchblade 100. It gets amazing tone, compariable to a Mesa Dual Rec and plus I can leave my noisy rack system at home and save my back by not lugging all that Mesa gear. I still use 2 of the Recto cabs with the 2 Randalls but now I only have to take one head to get my sound. Now if I can just figure out a way to down size my guitar store on wheels, I'll be a happy man. Just one question, an all tube amp with quality internal effects, what has taken amp companies so long to think of this?Danny7String

I saw reviews on this head and I'm glad I bought it! For any metal style of player it's pure punch and metal tube sounding! I'm extremely pleased with this head and recommend it to anyone who wants that perfect sound which can be dialed in anyway you like. The effects are very good and can be adjusted to your liking with just a twist of a knob and they all sound awesome. I must admit though unless you want to keep turning your guitars volume knob off you should go and get a noise gate and use it for the high gain channel which does have some noise at high volumes but of course this is a tube head and should be expected! And YES, this head is LOUD! I use it with a Marshall full stack with Celestion T75's and my guitars use EMG 81's and I recommend this head to anyone for any style of music especially metal! This has a nice look, but thats about it. There is a loud electric buzz regardless of settings, instruments, or cables that is hard to overlook. The controls have little variability. power cord is short. I\d say either buy a big real amp, or a different brand. I miss my behringer and my orange box ampsCujo_rock

I am not a performer or anything like that, but this is probably a great practice amp which is what I use it for. I personally like the sound, be it on the clean side or the overdrive. I have not mastered it yet but I can get the sound I want out of it. I use it in a smaller room, probably 15×15 and it's pretty loud. Is it a beast that'll blow your sox off??? probably not, but look at the spec's and decide for yourself. I wanted a practice amp that had some overdrive and a little power. I bought this for a child to use with a 3/4 size strat. It is the perfect size for that use. The amp functions just fine, nothing wrong with it. The sound is not impressive on the clean channel but it's useable, the OD channel is not bad. If he wanted to play mostly with distortion I would keep this amp, but he is going to be playing clean most of the time, so I'm returning this one in exchange for a Fender Frontman. If you want Marshall distortion in a small package this is not a bad buy, but If you plan to use the clean channel quite a bit, I would suggest something else. I also don't like the fact that this amp has no bass or treble controls, and you will miss them terribly on the clean channel because it needs them pretty bad. The OD is decent as-is, but the cleans need tweaking and you can't do it.Johnny

I really like this amp. I bought it used at a really good price, so I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it sounds. It has loads of power and nice tone. I bought it as a practice amp, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it on stage in a small club.voltyr

Fantastic amp for the price! The clean channel is great, and has time delay effects that is unexpected for an amp in this range. The overdrive is excellent too, and you can control different frequencies as well. It also has two inputs for guitars, and a microphone input! So you can jam with friends and sing along.
