Best Acoustic Guitar Amp Under $200 (Jan 2023 Update)

A great mini amp suited to acoustic guitars for private use applications in living rooms or bedrooms. The sound quality is very crisp and clear. There is a choice of microphone emulation to simulate mic-ing up your acoustic guitar. The signal from this mini amp can be fed into a PA or a mixing desk using the Phones output socket. This amp is not really suitable for rock electric guitar sounds like crunch and distortion. The Yamaha THR5 is more suitable for this purpose.Danny

I have looked at the Yamaha THR line of amps many times in various retail shops. Finally saw one on MF in open box condition. Thought, "What the heck." Looks and functions as new. I bought the THR5A to use with my acoustic-electrics. I wanted a small portable amp with good effects for small venues and home practice. For me, a solo singer song writer playing originals, this little amp is a true gem. I use it for effects support in stereo, the other line run through my 40 watt Fender Acoustasonic. For years I have used the durable Acoustasonic as my PA, monitor, and for my vocals, and my Boss RC3 Looper. The THR5A is used simply to tweak the sound of the guitar. The effects are very nice, lots of range to dial in. The modeled Mics offer enough variety to cover the 3 different AE guitars I use. (Carvin AC175, Carvin AE185, Huss and Dalton CM). I can even use my OCD pedal through the THR5A for playing blues leads over the Loops. I would recommend this amp to any player of AE guitars because the sound quality out of this small inexpensive amp is truly amazing. But remember young squires, the THR5A is a very low watt amp with tiny speakers, so do not expect it to support you in a setting of more than 15-20 attentive listeners!Surflad

Excellent sound quality, bass reflex much better than expected. High fidelity with a robust bass reflex. Of course it has limitations being so small but the sound can easily fill any room or up to a couple of rooms.B-man

I originally bought the A20, the chorus went function went bad. I was supposed to get a replacement A20, but I was told the store delivery truck broke down. The demo A20 was pretty beat up, so I went for the A15 since they had it in stock. Less wattage, smaller speaker, no reverb, and no output with adjustable level.. The A15 cost less, but I would have rather had a replacement A20. That said, it's not a bad amp. I will wait before I ever recommend to a friend, based on my experience with the A20.None

O.K. Boys and Girls, I'll get right to the point. If you look at the input jacks on this combo amp, you'll see that the only choice for input #2, is a 1/4" plug. That means that, unless you use a converter to go from XLR to 1/4", you can't use a normal (low impedance) mic on input #2. Input #2 is the one with the EQ section on it. So, if you want to EQ vocals with this unit, you're out of luck with the on board EQ, unless you buy an external XLR to 1/4" convertor cable or plug. Then look at the #1, XLR input. There is no EQ on that channel. You plug your mic into this input and hope for the best. Without EQ you can't tailor the sound from your mic, with this amplifier's EQ. You are stuck with whatever your mic produces, and the tonal characteristics of your voice. So, if you need to roll off some highs, or accentuate them, you can't do it on this unit with just the XLR input on this amp. You'd have to process your vocals externally to this amp, them bring them into the XLR input on this amp. It's either that, or you'd have to get an XLR to 1/4" convertor and use the input #2. Other than that, Acoustic does a great job with these all-in-one acoustic style amps. I've used one for years. They are very quick to setup, have reasonable power for small rooms, and have good tone. I'd recommend these, especially for the price. Just be aware that the limitations on this particular unit, at least partially lies in the fact that they did not put a dual use XLR/1/4" jack on channel two. The old Acoustic AG30 had dual use jacks on both channels. What were they thinking when they designed this unit: no EQ for vocals? What the heck….?TruthMan

The amp was solidly built, more than I expected. The sound was clean. The reverb did create a little background noise when turned up over half way. The chorus was clean. I left the tone controls at midpoint because the amp’s natural sound was quite adequate. Most surprising is that when I used it with my solid body and hollow body electric guitars, it sounded better than the two name brand guitar maker’s amps that I have. I prefer clean tones and do not use fuzz, crunch, distortion, or high gain signal disruption. I do use full chorus and partial reverb this amp and with it’s inherent excellent sound it performs perfectly.Keith

This is a tough one to write about. This amp has so much going for it. Its clean tones are much better than expected. The reverb effect is more than up to the challenge. However, the chorus effect is almost non-existent. It has to be dialed up to beyond "8" to have any signs of life, and even then it does not sound anything like what a chorus effect should be. I know, what many people would say is: what do you expect for $ 79 ? I expect everything to work as labeled and promised.David

I just got this amplifier yesterday and I took it through an hour long test. It is very solidly made, it has a genuinely good sound. I play guitar in church so I don?t need a lot of volume. I just need to be able to keep up with piano and light drums. It?s absolutely perfect for that. I play an acoustic guitar with a condenser mic pick up that has very high fidelity. The amp reproduces the sound very faithfully., much better than my electric guitar amp. If I needed more volume it has a line out that could go directly to the sound system. I highly recommend it.Tom

This is Orange Amplifiers entry into the Acoustic Amp business and they have done a wonderful job of capturing the needs of an acoustic player and the portability that is needed for small venue and street musicians. I purchased the Loudbox Mini Charge to use in small settings as a solo fingerstyle acoustic guitarist. So far I've found very little I don't like about this amp. It has great volume and tone for its size … it really sounds wonderfully articulate despite the fact it simply can't match the headroom of larger, more powerful units. Then again, it's designed for small venues. The reverb and chorus settings are well-executed and pleasant sounding and the three band eq is responsive. Bluetooth is easy to pair and use making this a potential boon at deck and tailgate events. If I had to list negatives my first gripe would be that the channel two input is XLR only. It would have been nice to see a combination jack here for times when players want to use a second instrument input. However, a passive DI box will solve that issue. The other missing feature is an anti-feedback circuit. There is a phase switch but the lack of a true auto-notch on an amp in this price range seems strange. Finally, the on-board battery makes this unit heavier than it looks. It easily outweighs a Fender Acoustasonic 90 even though the Fender is physically twice its size. Those issues aside, the Loudbox Mini Charge is a great performing little amp with the bonus of being battery powered when needed. I'm definitely a fan.GS

So far I've just practiced with it at home and the sound is superb, especially the low end being very present and not muddy. Big bonus for me is I can easily carry it in one hand and guitar in the other so no need for multiple trips. Another reason I got it is for my outdoor gigs where access to electricity can be iffy. I recently grabbed this beauty to use with my array of acoustic electric guitars (Gibson L-00 Rosewood, Martin 000-17E, Taylor 324ce, Breedlove Oregon Myrtlewood Concertina, and Breedlove Premier Adirondack/Rosewood Concert). I will especially need it when it comes time to play shows again, and I was interested in this amp as it has two channels (one for guitar and one for vocals). The sound is perfect and so true to the tone and nuances of each guitar that I'm mostly just mad at myself that it took me this long to get ahold of this amp. It is deep and full sounding and also has an excellent grouping of effects (the delay and reverb are stellar). There are more expensive acoustic amps out there (I own one of them) but this is the best that I've used. It will give you absolutely everything that you need to annoy your neighbors or to perform in front of a small-to-medium-sized room full of people.Tyler from Oregon

Overall I'm very pleased. Other reviews have covered most everything, so I'll just add a few comments. While I love the sound of this amp, it's pretty under-powered when used with dynamic mics or a passive guitar pickup. I have a Taylor 712 ce with a K&K mini installed, and it benefits greatly from running the signal into a LR Baggs Para Acoustic Guitar DI and Preamp first. Similarly, a dynamic mic like a Shure 58 sounds fine, but will do much better with a preamp of some sort. I prefer to use a condenser like an Audio-Technica AE5400. I also have the big brother of this amp, the 200-watt version. I like to take a line out from that amp and run it into the 100 for use as a stage monitor. The amp sound basically identical, so that eliminates the need for messing around much with the EQ – what you hear is what is going out to the audience. There's no tilt-back mechanism on the 100 but I find that a foam block like what's used for transporting a kayak serves as a nice support to lean it on. One other thing – this is a beautiful amp and deserves some protection. I don't think that Musicians Friend as of this writing stocks a cover for it, but ione is available at a reasonable price online if you look around a bit. Bottom line – this is a very nice little amp. Allowing for the gain issues noted above, I'm very pleased with both the 100 and 200-watt versionsNJKid

Hands down, this is the most stunning amp I have ever used with my acoustic guitar! The sound is absolutely gorgeous, warm, and true to the beauty of my guitar! I own a Martin GPC16 and use it with this amp. Even my husband, who isn't a musician but has an ear for sound, couldn't believe how beautiful my guitar sounded on it. I recommend this for any acoustic player! I use it for guitar and vocals and have been so impressed. The built in effects are perfect for what I need- nothing fancy but tasteful. Powerful little amp with a bunch of onboard effects including a 90 second looper (Note the product descriptions say 60 seconds on most major retail sites) however it can do 90 seconds and layer on as much as you like. My Gibson J-45 sounds beautiful out of this amp and with an LR Baggs pre-amp pedal I am below 1/4 volume and that's enough to fill a large living room full of sound. The bluetooth functionality works great and sounds really good. It does miss a bit on the low end when playing music from an iPhone, but that was expected. The effects are great, tone is spot on. Only wish for me is that you could blend reverb and chorus but you can only mix delay/chorus and delay/reverb. Not a big deal. For an affordable, great clean sounding amp with some nice effects you can't go wrong with this. I put it up against a Fishman Loudbox mini and went home with this one.Randall K

I bought this little guy about 2 weeks ago and am really happy that I did. I am constantly tweaking my sound in search of just the right sound. This one gets me there for the most part. The clarity and depth of the low end was a great surprise. I am a solo acoustic performer for the most part occasionally branching out to duos and trios. I have a ton of gear but also seem to struggle getting just the right sound mainly because everywhere I play is different. This little guy is a great solution for small rooms or quiet settings. It's also a pretty good solution for larger louder gigs due to its line out options. I can go straight into the back of my different line array speakers and get a bigger beautiful tone that fills the room nicely. The FX are great and very easy to dial in. I also bought the 4 button foot pedal which makes the looping seamless. Vocals through this amp are clear and have the same options for quality fx. I tried several acoustic amps, but this one did it for me. It's also very light weight and even has a small integrated kickstand which is pretty cool. Very glad I bought this, it makes practicing a pleasure as well due to the sound quality. My acoustic guitars come to life and my semi hollow PRS sounds beautiful through it as well.Jaxon

This has got to be the best thing to ever happen for Acoustic Singer Songwriter's who need a high quality Amplifier for Guitar and Voice/Microphone. The retail price is much lower than competition, and Musicians' Friend made me an even better deal with a 15% coupon. This Amplifier has it all. I can mount it on a Speaker Tripod and put it at ear level at a gig, and it has more than enough power all by itself to fill a 60 foot Bar with Tables. It has really nice controls and more effects and connection options that either of my other two amps. Let's just say that until I received this AMP, my favorite by far was my Fishman Loud box Mini. Bugera, like their sister Behringer products, are designed in Germany and manufactured in China. With a little work you can search Musician's Friend and find another German brand, manufactured in Germany, whose small amp is the 5 times more expensive inspiration for this product. I have bought and returned an amp from the more expensive option as it had a manufacturing defect (a noisy volume pot) but I did get a chance to look it over carefully and run it through its paces. The AC60 appears to have similar build quality, similar tone (turn on the color/colour switch to get that signature Tommy Emmanuel tone out of the whizzer cone single 8" driver), and adds an AUX input, tilt back legs, a standard sized speaker stand adapter, and a universal AC power supply that will work anywhere in the world. It is quite loud for 60 watts and mine weighs only 15 lbs and 12 ozs. The reverb and effects are first rate. It produces very little heat when running and I would suspect that in additional to the universal digital power supply it is a class D digital power amp driving the speaker. Being nearly end-to-end digital in design is different from its inspirational amp as that one is analog. I have found no reason to prefer one over the other (excepting the lighter weight of most class D digital designs). For some applications you might prefer an amp with a tweeter but I find the color switch does an excellent job making the frequency response with an acoustic guitar sound excellent. The mic channel sounds good with a mic for voice, the easy part, but also sounds fine driven with music from my phone (a much harder test though I did turn the bass up for the best tone). Turn off the color switch, choose a longer tail reverb with a bit more effect in the mix, add a tube screamer, and you've got a quite decent electric guitar option too (for which a tweeter design would be a liability as distorted guitar can be tough on a tweeter).Jon F.

The amp was great at low volume. Anything past a third of the way up got distorted. I tried 4 different guitars with all different pickups with the same outcome. Didn't handle lows very well at all. The vocals really didn't sound good at all. I was using an Audix om2 microphone. In all honesty my cheap Acoustic A15v amp sounded better for both vocals and guitar. The only thing I liked better on this amp was the direct out. Thanks to Musicians Friend for exchanging this for the woodsman jumbo 65. It is a great amp. Very good sound and options for the price. It is not heavy which is a big deal to someone who has had back surgery. I gave it a 5 in spite of one big complaint. When you turn it off you hear a loud "POP!" Wow, is that loud is what I thought the first time I heard it. I read about it online and there is a simple fix. Find an old set of ear phones or ear buds that you would use on a cassette player or a Sony Walkman. (Yes, these are ancient electronic relics from the past for you younger people. You might ask your parents if they have a cassette player and borrow the ear plugs.) Just plug that earphone jack into the "PHONES" input BEFORE you turn it off. THEN you only hear a little blip when you turn it off. THEN just pull the jack out of the "PHONES" input before you start it next time.chasmigu

This amp is better than I thought. I've had it for over a year. I use it for practice sessions (classic rock mostly), and I haven't gone over '4 1/2' on the volume (it does give good feedback if you want it). I did upgrade the speaker to a 12" 'Celestion' Vintage 30 and am absolutely happy! This could easily be mic'd for larger venues. Lightweight, powerful enough, and the effects are a good assortment. One small glitch…when using the footswitch, there is a short, instantaneous volume boost when the pedal is pressed for distortion. Could possibly be a problem for recording. Besides that, 5 stars for me.Myk

After playing acoustic guitar for 15+ years and rarely plugging in, I finally decided to make the plunge and try out an electric. I was advised by a buddy to not buy too big, that 15W-20W would be plenty to practice with. So, I found this little Champion at Sam Ash, and so far it's been great! I bought the display model and have had no issues at all with it. Great sound, enough presets and effects to play around with, and sounds great clean too. Having a blast and loving it.Nate-O

I played with a Fishman SA220 Solo Amp for years, so I knew going in that the sound quality was going to be awesome with the Loudbox Mini. But nothing prepared me for just how good the sound would be. It really took me by surprise. As with any amp, you have to take some time to get the EQ settings right for the guitar you're playing, but the super-response 3-band EQ makes it incredibly easy to dial in your sound. I played a gig over the weekend and used my Taylor T5z and Gibson J-45 Avant Garde with the amp. They both sounded incredible through the amp! I was so jazzed. For that gig, I used the amp mainly as a reference monitor that I plugged into the FOH. It worked perfectly in that application. But truth be told, the amp really doesn't come into its own until the speaker's pushing some air. While it sounds great at lower volumes, there's something special that happens at higher volumes that's a little hard to articulate. There's a depth to the sound that isn't apparent at lower volumes, and you really don't get the full effect of the onboard reverb and chorus until you start pushing air. So I actually upped my stage volume a bit so I could hear/feel that effect. 🙂 Truth be told, I haven't used a microphone with it, but based on my experience with the SA220 and the general quality of the sound from my guitars, I have no doubt that this will be a great performer for vocals as well! What's really cool is that each channel has its own EQ and individual reverb. These are musts for a solo performance amp as far as I'm concerned. All that said, combine that great sound with incredible portability (it's about the size of a truck battery), and you've got a winner! But let's be honest here, it's not an AER. The bass response is not nearly as good as on those units. But it's close; close enough that if you're plugged into a FOH or DAW, you can compensate for the lower bass on the EQ panel of the mixer. It's also a fraction of the price of an AER. The value proposition of the Loudbox Mini far exceeds what it may lack in terms of sound quality as compared to a high-end system. Finally, what I love about having this unit is that for solo gigs, I now have options. I can use this unit for small cafe or private residential parties, then use my JBL Eon One for larger venues. The indio 10 amp that I received was flawless. It's construction is very solid. The clean channel doesn't color the sound but has treble/bass control for EQ. I don't use overdrive so I can't comment. That would be subjective to someone who does. It may be a sound that you've been looking for or you may hate it. I find that effects that I do not like work in certain situations. Also plug in a Mpow Bluetooth receiver and you have a Bluetooth speaker and with batteries it's portable. In my opinion this is a good value for the price.Mark

This is literally the best portable battery amp you can get. Blows away any Pignose. The sound is deep because it's a closed back, and it's actually loud enough for small shows and open-mic nights. Very happy with this purchase. Monoprice is a good company.Tom

I was pleasantly surprised by how great of a small practice amp the Indio by Monoprice 10-watt battery powered portable 2-channel amp is. The amp that I received didn?t have any cosmetic defects, all the controls worked as expected, and the construction feels solid. I use a Monoprice 6 ft. guitar amp cable to connect my American Professional Telecaster to the amp and the sound levels and tone coming out of the amp?s speaker sounds good to my ears. The amp comes with an A/C power adapter but I power the amp using Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable batteries for easy portability of the amp. I like the amp so much that I might buy another one. Fantastic amp for the price! The clean channel is great, and has time delay effects that is unexpected for an amp in this range. The overdrive is excellent too, and you can control different frequencies as well. It also has two inputs for guitars, and a microphone input! So you can jam with friends and sing along. At 40w output, it is pretty loud. If you are in the fence, get it! You won't regret it!integrationbyparths1

Below are two reviews out of five that mentioned hiss from the amp. Unfortunately, I ignored the warnings. They are correct. I received the amp today and before plugging in and with all pots cranked left (off) as they are right out of the box, I powered up to hear a very audible hiss. Not good. This is not a 60 cycle hum and has nothing to do with bad power or ground loops. It is amp hiss which cannot be rectified. I bought the amp to place in front of my couch pointing at me to practice at low volumes with effects. My ears are bothered by the constant unclean sound at these low volumes. If the amp had a mic on it for stage work, the hiss would definitely be heard when not playing and possibly within the music. I am disappointed at myself for not taking those reports seriously. I did so because I trusted the brand and because the design of the amp seemed perfect for my needs. The amp otherwise is really sweet. The effects are usable and the EQ is very sensitive with fantastic range. It also delivers brilliant highs and soothing warm low end. It is a powerful 20 watts and my baritone ukulele sounds wonderful through it. But the hiss … it never stops. It is never clean even with the volume off. I really wanted to keep this amp, but I will be returning it and looking towards a Roland or Fishman both offering higher wattages which I do not need, not to mention the much higher price points. The experience is a bummer but I have faith in MF's return policy and honest service.Scottie

I was looking for a small amp with some bells & whistles to use for all sorts of applications, but not spend a bundle. This model fit the bill perfectly. Unfortunatley all it's great features can't out-weigh the "hiss" sound all the other reviewers are complaining about. I took a chance and ordered an open box model which was noisy just like all the other reviews mentioned. MF sent me a brand new one and it was just as noisy. I am now awaiting a third amp hoping it's from a different batch. I can't believe that Acoustic would allow an entire crop of amps circulate with such poor sound quality. I have owned the Acoustic A20 for a few weeks. I am a long time player/musician. This amp is pretty good as a bedroom shed amp for acoustics with pickups. You can get a clear sound with enhancements, like more bass or reverb. Retains the "acousticy" quality way better than some electric guitar amp. I have tried it with Takamine classical & steel string, Eastman archtop & flattop. The amp provides a pretty good sound for all. Not enough power for an actual gig. I was not expecting that, so OK. No good for an electric archtop; too distorted. Biggest bummer for me: no gain setting/preamp. To get a decent volume from some guitars, turn this amp up to "10". Or, use an external preamp. Also, the feedback elimination works OK, two knobs. But, even with "level" on "0", the other knob still has a big effect on the sound. Just saying. Poor design there. Reverb is cheesy but better than nothing. Chorus same; adds feedback. Borderline useless. I like the amp for the $$; but it is not some pro gear. Good for light home practice use only.reviewer

If you're expecting an amazing Marshall sound, you might want to invest in some of the bigger amps Marshall has to offer. If you think you can get a concert level sound out of this little guy, you will not be the happiest person. However, that level of "high" expectation would not be very reasonable or even realistic for such a little amp. This is a very cute, small amp that will help you plug your guitar so you can practice quietly in any room in your house without annoying your wife. It will distort if you crank the volume all the way out, and if you're used to the full sound of a bigger Marshall (like I do) it might make you feel like you're hearing your guitar over an old telephone (just my opinion). However, if you calibrate your instrument volume & tone you can find a happy medium. With that said, for the price it is a very nice solution to practice and if the sound seems too weak for you, you have the choice of putting headphones. I personally use it just for practice on the fly, it serves it purpose, but then again I was not expecting the best sound output. So I am happy with the purchase.BeeZee

It's basically a toy amp. I can see it being used as a portable amp for non-serious performance. Personally, I like it for a quick jam and for (relatively) quiet practice in my apartment setting. Won't disturb my neighbors but it does get noticeable at the highest volume. That and the overdrive knob are the two main controls. By default it just does a clean sound but overdrive lets you toggle in some gain for that distortion. It has a good look that definitely models after its bigger brothers.Rick

I don't know what some of you guys expect from this thing, but be realistic: it's an inexpensive 5 inch tall, 1 watt amp. It's not designed for anything but sitting in a chair and entertaining yourself or a couple of people. Within that context, I enjoy this thing and sometimes get it off the shelf and play around with it for awhile. Also, when I owed somebody a 1 minute long riff for his podcast and my main amp was getting some regular tech service, I plugged my American Standard Strat into this thing, mic'd the amp, used the OD channel with the volume and tone both on 10, played the part, then added tons of bass, reverb, and chorus to it in post, and it sounded great and nobody ever knew that I recorded the part using a 5 inch tall amp. It is what it is as long as you don't expect the world.Steve

I bought this amp to use in a limited space and at a low volume for very low cost. It obviously doesn't compare to a normal size amp in quality but for being a practice amp it is perfect. Many reviews across the web say it loses power or sounds bad after a short time, but its literally as simple as changing the battery in my case. The manual even says to change the battery if there is an issue with sound, and the battery that comes with it isn't really the best and doesn't last long. It has great sound at a low and mid range volume for the little power it actually has but when you ramp it up it does sound a little distorted but not bad at all for $23-$29. While you certainly could use it in the studio for certain alt/auxiliary tones and/or layers and achieve fantastic results (producer/artist discretion advised), It's not meant for that. It's meant purely for being able to enjoy playing electric, untethered, while wandering about randomly and/or practicing. …Whether outdoors or indoors. …At home, in the park, around the neighborhood, at a camp site or a BBQ, wherever. Perhaps even during your breaks at work. It's not meant for playing in a full band situation (especially with drums), nor is it meant for getting a half-stack sound (or even normal combo-amp sound), for a fraction of the price, during a high-end studio session or full-on concert. mini-amp works great as a travel amp, or playing early in the am when ppl are sleeping lol it fits perfectly inside my hardcase, along with my electric guitar, headphones, tuner, cables, etc. performs as expected.. dont look to be amazed at its performance lol but for practice/travel its the perfect amp. has a heavy grind for chunky metal riffs. doesnt pick up the p[inch harmonics that great, but they do come through. the clean setting is great, too, and for a tiny little fkr it really kicks pretty good! had my finacee yelling at me to "turn that fkn thing down!" so, lol, it hits pretty hard for a small little guy.. but like i said, dont expect it to put out the tones of a line 6 spider IV or a Marsall half-stack cuz it aint capable for that. it isnt designed for gigs lol so dont expect that kinda sound. but, i love this mini-amp; its my new best friend!da.davc.mcoumykeiu
