I'm a musician – I play guitar and keyboard. This book was very difficult for ME to comprehend. My husband is trying to learn the bass guitar. This book that I bought for him is NOT for beginners or folks who do not already have a deep knowledege of music note-reading. This book is now a decoration for our music room bookshelf. I bought him a DVD of how to play the bass, and this DVD is exactly what he needed.dennysdawgs

The most detailed accurate book I've ever read on Bass Guitars. Absolutely amazing. I love this book. The pictures are Spectacular. Thank You, Geddy Leebb1671
This colorful tome is nearly nine pounds of incredible photographs and very readable text concerning the electric bass, the workhorse of every rock band and bottom and driving force of most other musical aggregations. You may wonder if there are any old basses left in the world after viewing Geddy Lees collection. Its a great limited edition that probably cost a million dollars to publish. Worth every cent.jedson45

Good at explaining principles of the bass guitar but would be more engaging with recognisable tunes early on. As you learn the notes of new strings, the tunes it gives you to play can sound quite abstract. Otherwise good.winner_richy

Reviews:
Straightforward reading could work out to simplify bass playingGlen G.
I bought this book to help my teenaged son with his new bass guitar. The '…For Dummies' is a much simpler and easy read than many other books out there and I hoped it would help spark his interest in practicing if the book was easy for him to understand. We both enjoy it (as I am trying to learn as well) and would definitely buy these types of books again! They make learning fun.dbcobb
A Good General Overview, not as nice as the guitar version. Theses books make nice refrence material and intro to various concepts and technquies. I do strongly disagree with the previous statement of: You can find everything on the internet and it's free. Not True. While there is tons of info out there it dosen't mean it's all good advice or even written by someone who remotely knows what there doing. In short there's only 12 notes. There is really nothing new under the sun anywhere. What makes a book a good book is what is covered, how it is covered and how it is explained. That's what your buying. You don't need anyone to show you say a Major Scale. It's simply a series of WWHWWWH (whole and Half Steps) thus every diatonic mode is simply coming from the Intial Scale. It's all a matter of how that info is expressed to you and teaching you to do it for yourself. A Scale Pattern is simply a result of the previious information. Etc on down the line. What makes a book good or bad depends on the How it is expressed to you/What is expressed to you/and if they teach you how to go about doing it for yourself. Yes there is some nice info online, but unless you can tell good from bad, how would you know what is usefull and what is misconceived. So Yes a nice handy refrence guide, not a complete method book. Useful but perhaps a bit on the pricey side.clittlern1

Reviews:
I'm a trombone guy by trade. I took up the bass because a band needed a bass and not a bone so I camped out with this book and learned a ton very quickly. Keep up with the speed of the cd's and practice away and you'll be on your way. I also got several other books on bass blues, funk etc. and just kept practicing and learning and I'm over 65! So you can do it too!Chip
I am a teacher and have been using this book for years with very good results. The version with cd's is recommended and this one doesn't say it has the three cd's with it, so that is a minus. You need the cd's to get the most out of this. This is one of the only books that I have used that I did not immediately want to rewrite. It is a workable graded method of bass reading and understanding that is the best I have found. This means that it works in its suggested capacity, people learn to read and play bass from it. Recently it has been replaced with another Hal Leonard electric bass book that is rediculous in comparison. Buy this book while you can.Markee

Reviews:
I'm a musician and teacher who needed a reliable teaching aid for electric bass students. The added CD is a great bonus. The things that things impressed me about the author is that he is a bassist and in all three volumes of his work he never once refers to the electric bass as a"bass guitar" because, it's not a guitar! Many bass tutor books are written by lead guitarists 'playing at' being a bassist so, this is what sets this book apart. The book recommends the use of an appropriate teacher so, take care who you chose.. For guitarists switching from guitar to electric bass this book gets you thinking like a bassist Thoroughly recommended for those aspiring to, 'being the bass'.bnicholls-2012

Reviews:
Good book to use as metronome with out just having a boring click,,click,,click of a metronome..propanemik
