2. Hagstrom Viking Bass – Wild Cherry Transparent
Product Details:
Introduced as the concord bass in 1965, hagstroms viking bass injects some tactfully chosen vigor into an all-time classic design. this meticulously crafted semi-hollow bass with a short 30.75-inch (781 mm) scale is fitted with hagstroms custom-voiced dyna-rail humbucking pickup's a brilliantly designed 6-way rotary switch allows switching between various humbucking and single-coil configurations for a dizzying array of tonal options. from 60's brit-rock to modern day low-end goodness, the viking bass delivers ear-candy galore. all hagstrom electric guitars and basses include their patented h-expander truss rod. providing tension at both ends and running the entire length of the neck, the rigid yet light-weight alloy truss rod allows for a very low action and thin neck, two factors that were instrumental in earning hagstrom its reputation as the worlds fastest playing guitar. the h-expander truss rod not only provides ultimate neck stability, but it also contributes to hagstroms unique tone. longer sustain and a round attack are some of the sonic characteristics the h-expander adds to the tonal essence of hagstrom.resinator wood is a wood composite material that is both more uniform in density and more stable than any standard wood product. these characteristics eliminate dead spots or wolf tones sometimes associated with conventional wood fingerboards. resinator wood has an articulate sound similar to high quality ebony, but without any of the problems associated with ebony. it provides a stable and clear tone, and also adds higher overtones and harmonics which uniquely detail each note. like our h-expander truss rod, resinator wood is a major contributor to the distinctive hagstrom tone.

Reviews:
I bought mine new and it's everything positive others say about it. Don't know what bobz429 is talking about. Obviously he has a modified model. Hardware is first rate with a Hagstrom designed P90 single coil at the neck and classic '58C humbucker at the bridge (Hagstrom winds their own pickups). It's a joy to play, very clean factory pups, beautiful finish, very well crafted and flawless. Rivals guitars up to 3 times the cost in my opinion. The Hagstrom composite Resinator fret board is fast and has good sustain. This guitar can be used for jazz with very clean articulation and voicing, moan the blues, fit right into classic or grunge rock and growl with the best of 'em throughout it's entire range. The ringing clarity is stunning! It's a lot of bang for your buck, and lighter than you'd think for a guitar with a 28" scale. A "tad" neck-heavy balance wise, but once you play it and realize it's potential from mild to wild, this is easily overlooked and by "no means" a deal breaker. It has 5 star ratings across the board for a reason. It's simply that good! This is a players guitar and one I'll keep the rest of my life. It will surprise and please you once you plug it in. This is an amazing baritone. Plug it in, crank it up, and jam 'til the cows come home! If your in the marketfor a baritone guitar, the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe is very hard to beat! I personally don't think any others in it's price rang hold a candle to it. Highly recommended. Enjoy! Edit: Was surprised to see I wasn't listed as a verified purchaser (don't know how that works). Oh well, I assure you I own this guitar purchased from SoundsCheapMusic on eBay out of Pleasant Hill, MO on April 22, 2015… in the Cosmic Black Burst finish. All the same, you won't be disappointed. 😉honorable1-us
With more than 15yrs. of experience with various Hagstrom guitars and over 40yrs. of playing and performing, this instrument and review was an unexpected and a very pleasant surprise. I will acknowledge that I was prompted to pull the trigger on the purchase in no small part because of a couple of reviews here on MFI, one by a fellow who is an American musician living in Sweden. From what I was able to glean from a collection of YouTube videos from past NAMM shows, it looks like the Viking DLX 12 made it's debut about 2016, and has had at least one major update since, with the most notable being larger, but traditional-shaped F-holes on the top, fully creme bound, of course. I very much agree with the opinion previously expressed about there being a major advantage for Hagstrom because of their sourcing all woods(primarily Canada)and all hardware and electronics, leaving their factory contractors in China to concentrate on building the best looking/sounding instrument possible. I would place current Hagstrom product on a par with anything from the Park factories in Korea, and nearly on par with some of the older product that came from Matsumoko in Japan. IMHO, and as pointed out by a previous reviewer, the only real contenders in this narrow category of instrument are the hollowbody Ric 300 Series, and the current Gretsch Electromatic 5422-12, both of which are 2-3X the cost of a new Viking DLX 12. Pickups are clear voiced but fairly hot, and the Resonator fretboard feels great and works with the overall timbre of a maple bodied guitar. The bookmatched flame maple body sides, top, and back are a sight to behold; laminated but beautiful. The most playable and comfortable neck I have EVER put in my hand for a 12-string; a profile similar to an early 60's Gibson or modern ESP being "thin", but with a 15" radius and a 45mm black Tusq nut. Perfect for chording and rhythm, but enough room between string pairs for either finger or flatpicking with precision. Get ItArch69er
It caught my eye hanging in my local Guitar Center in Goodlettsville, TN, which has a terrific staff btw. I asked to try it and was quite impressed with the overall build quality and set-up. Simply perfect; action, intonation, fret dressing, etc. It didn't need a thing! Thought about it overnight and returned the next day to buy it.Alan

Reviews:
I bought this bass awhile ago. After reading several negative reviews I think the issues they have is this bass is shipped with no tension on the truss rod/neck. Out of the box it is not playable, sounds horrible and you need to adjust the truss rod to add relief to the neck. After making that adjustment this bass is a great beginners bass and sounds good. You will not be disappointed. Just watch a YouTube vid on how to add relief to a guitar neck / adjust truss rod.Gerald
I got this just to use for home recordings after YEARS away from bass playing. I've owned better in the past, but this is not bad! It has a good tone and the neck is easily playable. Sounds good playing through a Fender Rumble 25 watt amp. If there is one thing I don't like, it's the round-wound strings. I first started with flat wounds, playing funk and R & B, so the strings aren't as "warm" as I'd like. Still good for slap styles or for rock.Lee
I bought this bass back in 2003, and wanted to start playing again. I played bass in the early 1980's till 90's. I grew up with Rock to Metal days and had a Fender bass. I got caught up in marriage and working 12 hr days , so I sold my equipment. This bass plays well once you get it set up. Sounds great for a budget bass. I still have it among other upgrades bass guitars I now have. I still like playing it. And it still looks like new . Great bass for the money.Jbrocky0

6. Michael Kelly Custom Collection Element 4 Bass Guitar
Product Details:
The custom collection element 4 bass was designed for players who prefer a modernized take on a classic. the basic body lines might look familiar, but the mk designers took liberties to enhance comfort and playability. what makes this bass special is far deeper than the striking appearance. under the bridge the impact of a bridge on the performance of a bass guitar is something that many often underestimate. below that bridge is an aluminium tone block. since it is aluminium, it does not add weight to the bass but has a similar sonic impact to using a heavy bridge. the pickups were developed specifically for the mk element bass line by rockfield and they have an over-wound classic pickup sonic performance. sculpt your sound also, key to our design was allowing excellent user customization potential using the onboard controls. those controls include offering you a stacked tone pot with separate treble and bass controls. there is also a blend via a blend knob to sweep from one pickup to the other or varying degrees of each. also included is a bypass switch allowing you to go from active to a very vintage passive tone with a quick click.

Overall: I love the sound and playability of this wonderful instrument. My only complaint is with FedEx, they delivered a day late and at 10pm. they did not walk it up tp the door they left it in the middle of a driveway I share with a neighbor and left with no notification. I just happened to hear their door slam. I opened the front door as they left. I walked out to the driveway and stepped on the package because it was so dark. Fortunately the instrument was not damaged.Micheal

Mine came with a warped neck, body is super soft and easily dings, and finish as you would expect is consistent with most low cost cost Asian basses. Electronics also. Required a lengthy setup but still could not optimize with bad neck. There are better options in a beginner bass. The Rondo SX and the lower end Ibanez lefty basses are just two examples.kraigster414

Reviews:
I've been using this bass for around 2 years now and its my first its an amazing value this and a 20 dollar amp and I was blasting off I used a tuner off of my phone the notes played really well and true it's been my baby ever since I got it. I got a case for it and its pretty easy to manage not overly heavy and not too awkward to take with you to a park or something like that. Anyways this has been a great value and I assure you that you will not only be happy with the product but it will last you and it is a steal price wise.wilkiw_h4urof
I had a bass similar to this, never played it and when I moved to another state I gave it away and regretted that later. I have always wanted to learn bass and bought this guitar because it was inexpensive and the reviews were good. I didn't want to spend a ton of money if I decided later on that I didn't want to continue with learning this instrument. Although I am just starting to learn the bass, this guitar is going to work out perfectly for my needs. It's a smaller sized bass but not too small. It is really nice, light in weight and it looks well constructed. I got the black one and it looks really cool. If you're considering a bass you've got nothing to lose with this.Jay
Bought it for grand daughter. Wanted to learn bass guitar. Checked it out when arrived. Action was ok. Tuned it by ear and frets. Action a little high. But it's a starter. If she keeps interest I'll probably get her a better model. Or some flat wounds. Good starter for the $. Long scale.jammin_joemusic

Reviews:
I brought this for a signature book for our wedding, we wanted a playable momento, but didn't want to spend a lot of money. It's a great $88 guitar, we have guitars upwards of $500 so of course it would not be as good. Well built, tunes easily, buy needs frequent tuning. I think if we replace with high quality strings we would definitely take this guitar up a notch. Good for beginners and will definitely teach them tuning skills.Tasha S.
I purchase this bass being motivated by its price and rave reviews. Let me just say that when I received my bass today I was blown over at the fit and finish on this bass. It looks like a $500.00+ guitar! I've been playing it for hours and the deep bass is so sweet. The action is a tad high but I kind of like it that way. The great sound projection from this bass made me chuckle while I was playing because the bass made a silver cup I have on a wall mounted shelf rattle! Now that's impressive sound projection! I can't wait to plug in this bass to my friend's Ampeg that's a 1X15 ported bass amp. It should be wild! For the money this Best Choice acoustic had got to be the deal of a lifetime if you're in the market for an acoustic bass guitar.Jason
So hey. I’m kinda new at this sort of thing. I did grow up playing music in the bands and orchestra. Mostly woodwinds. I did always want to play some strings. So finally I do. I’ve been at the guitar for a little while now. And it’s very exciting to find an opportunity to study bass. This instrument seems very fundamental and good to me. So I’m excited about it. Good deal for starting out. Thing is, as I’ve been practicing,… I just kinda noticed that I can’t seem to get the High A note to speak as well as I’d like. I mean everything sounds great. But I’m going to have my guitar shop buddies take a look at the fret there. Something isn’t quite right. I bet it just needs a little adjustment. That’s a pretty sweet note if you can fit it in a solo. But of course that deep bass and fundamental sound is what it’s really about. !!!Egore

Reviews:
This is a good bass that I picked up as a beater and will probably use more than just for that. For active electronics and the cost, I figured it would be worth any set up that other reviews complained about. Mine didn't require any setup at all. However, there was a really noticeable chip off the paint on the headstock, and I bought new, not scratch and dent. It took two weeks to ship and I didn't want to go through a return process and get a less playable return, so I called Musician's Friend and asked for a rebate. They only gave ten, but I got it on sale and took the deal. As for the play-ability of this bass, it rocks right up there with a lot of basses three times the cost. It's a really easy to play setup, easy to navigate neck and gives nice indie rock bass tones out of the box, at least for me.Rev. Sal
I bought this for my son for his birth day a year and a half ago. I myself have played bass for over 30 years. I have had this thing professionally set up twice. Fretts needed dressed, action was way too high right out of the box. Electronics are fairly decent and playability is good after a set up. He is happy but already seeking a better bass.Scott
i bought it used, so that may affect my review but the bass was fairly easy to play, but the tuning was an issue. it would stay in tune but the pegs were kinda loose. i should note that this bass has ACTIVE PICKUPS. Meaning it takes a 9v battery to power. Not a big deal but you can't really play the bass without a battery. And if you forget to turn the volume knob all the way down, the battery will drain overnight and be complete dead before you pick the bass back up again. Would i recommend this to someone? yes but if they are beginning to learn how to play the instrument.zach m

Reviews:
I am pretty happy with the end results, I'll start with the cons because it's a short list: there were a few chips in the paint on the bass when it arrived (somewhere around 2-4). This is likely a shipping issue more than Glarry itself, however they are so small and obscure you would have to know they are there and look straight for them in order to see them. Now onto the pros: Price, price price. Glarry has put profit behind them and prioritized putting instruments into the hands of as many people that are passionate to get one as possible. This bass plays like any other bass and at a 1/3 of the cost of most mainline basses. Not to mention it looks way cooler and comes with a bag and a pick and some tools, wires and a strap. It's just overwhelming bang for buck and I respect prioritizing making it cheap and easy for everyone who wants an instrument to get one over profit. Can't stress it enough. Would recommend to anyone and everyone looking for one of the instruments available on this site.
I bought to learn Bass Guitar, I'm learning at an awesome rate on this Bass. My instructor said it's weight is perfect, not too heavy. He's a Speed Metal player. That's what I'm learning. I'm influenced by Grindcore and Death Metal. The design of this Bass Guitar fits with dark and creepy vibe. Keep up the great work, Glarry!
This is the first bass I've purchased. I got the burning fire sunburst bass/amp combo for 187$ Shipped! I Assumed and was willing to do a little work to the guitar because that's a great deal. have played guitar for years. Decided I wanted a bass but didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. I was looking at used basses. A glary review popped up on my Google news feed. So I read up about them. I expected the shipping to take forever and to have to do some work to the bass. I placed my order on a Wednesday night at 8 pm Pacific time and recieved my bass the following Saturday at 1:30 pm. Pretty dang fast for free shipping!!! When I recieved the bass it was in perfect condition. Very nice finish, no sharp fret edges, Al electronics in working order. The only adjustments I made we're the low E and A saddles. I raised them a little to get rid of some string buzz and tuned it. I am extremely impressed by what I recieved vs what I paid. If you're like me and looking for your first bass and want a quality instrument but don't want to break the bank. Then this deal is for you.

Reviews:
A lightweight plasticy box that feels a bit like an early games console but that produces a perfect rendition of early 90s squelchy rave. If you're seeking a nostalgic sense of sweaty illegal early rave or, a tool for up to date EDM, this is a good place to start. It's not at all intuitive to program but, learning the method does provide insight to the workings of this rave box. It's more flexible than you might think as it can do triplets and, you can use it to control other synths and, use other synths through the squelchy filters. At this price everyone should have one. Buy one for you and one for your dad.
Versatile 303 variant. It can't go some places an original 303 (or non-mo TD-3) can, losing a bit of rubberiness, but it does open up a whole new world of (mostly dirty) sounds. Being able to tweak accented & non-accented notes separately opens up all sorts of interesting pattern variations which simply wouldn't be possible on the original. I do wish those abilities could be present with the original sound too! I haven't tried interfacing it with anything else, which should open things up even more (see the youtube video by blush response for some of that). Oh, it looks great too!Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Every time I tweak a knob and get one of those fat drippy bass notes, I get acid flashbacks. And I wasn't even there, man! I'm not sure if the additional functionality of the MO brings a lot to the party. Or maybe I haven't yet cracked open the secret delights housed within. The clunky 80's sequencer is hilarious in its… eccentricity.Colin C.

Reviews:
Overall: I purchased my first bass in 1976. I have owned many of the top notch, well known electric basses and a few acoustic basses. After I sold my last acoustic bass a couple years ago, I was in the market for another and decided to throw all in and purchase this Martin, sight unseen. I was expecting at least decent quality, and I knew if I found the bass lacking, at least I tried. I knew if I bought another "lesser" bass I would be left wondering "what if?"I received this bass mid January. Looking it over it was pretty much everything you would expect from a USA built Martin. I gave it 5 stars in every category except quality, which I gave 4 1/2.I attribute this to the fact the string height was high, and I mean way high. Like cheap pawn shop guitar high. Like had to go out if tune just fretting a string, especially higher up the neck. After careful consideration, I went ahead and pulled the Tusq saddle and gave it the sandpaper treatment to lower the string height. Damn the warranty, I am accustomed to doing most all my work anyway. In fact I've never had one of my personal instruments in a repair shop. To me it's like a soldier and his rifle, you need to know and understand your equipment.Anyway, now to the good part:After the strings were situated closer to the fretboard where they needed to be, I began playing and enjoying this fine instrument. In the couple of weeks I've had it, I can honestly say it's the finest bass or guitar I have ever played let alone owned. If I had to pick just one instrument to keep this would be it, hands down. Currently I have Gibson's, Rickenbackers and Fenders among others (no crazy ultra high end stuff). I would give up any or all just to keep this bass. Why?The ease of play and the sound of this bass, especially unplugged is unlike anything I have ever played. This bass is like a triple shot of adrenaline straight into my psyche. I am doing things with this bass I have never done with any instrument, let alone bass I have ever played. It is such a joy to play, after all these years of not having anything like this I can't imagine not having it. I will never part with this bass.Did I just get lucky with this one? Yes and no. I imagine all of Martin's basses must be this good.As far as the action, I suppose if you bought one from a brick and mortar Martin dealer they would have taken care of the action upon delivery.By the way, the action, the set up at the nut was perfect and I did not have to touch the truss rod adjustment at all.So if you will excuse me, I have to wrap up this review so I can spend some time with my new best friend… my Martin bass…

Reviews:
As a bass player, I had no interest or intention to purchase EZbass. I thought why would I need it? I can play a 4 or 5 string bass and record anything I want any time. Then just out of curiosity I watched a few of the demonstration videos and was intrigued. As with all Toontrack products the samples and overall sound is excellent, but what finally hooked me was the songwriting features. Being able to instantly create a bassline from drum or keyboard midi was too hard to resist. Sure, I can play it myself, but not that quick! Also, it has the potential to inspire new ideas and if I really want to rerecord the parts with a real bass I can do that too. Or I can convert a real bass recording to midi data using the included tools, which is also very handy. Long story short, I bought it after watching a few of the videos and realising that it could save me a lot of time, particularly on production music where I just need to get a decent result fast. I recommend anyone interested check out the feature videos and decide for yourself. Like me, you may be surprised at what you find! A great price for a very useful sample instrument.James O.
This is a really well thought out instrument. Out of the box, it has two great sounding bass guitars and a good assortment of MIDI files. The killer feature for me is that you can construct a complete song on the timeline and tweak it to get it just right. For those of us who know what we want from a bass guitar part but can't afford or don't have access to a real bass player – this is simply a godsend. Even if you can play bass (as I do!!!), it's simply super convenient to be able to get ideas down as quickly as possible without having to set things up. The ability to fine-tune and tweak every aspect of the performance is staggering. Whereas you can do it in a DAW with a good sampled instrument, its hard work and fiddly. This is not. It's a joy to use and inspires you to experiment with slides and damping etc that help make the parts more human. To cap it all, my biggest complaint with the EZ Line is lack of resizing. Not any more. This beast can go full screen if you want it to and it looks great. The other features, such as audio to MIDI, are also very well thought out and super useful. Wholeheartedly recommended.Steven C.
I’ve been looking forward to this release for some time and now it’s here it doesn’t disappoint. Over the years there have been many companies offering bass VST instruments with varying degrees of satisfaction. Unfortunately they have all been lacking in one way or another. A great sounding plugin may have been let down by usability issues, or conversely another might be simple to use but sit awkwardly in the mix. Toontrack’s EZbass nails it all, doing for bass what it has previously done for drums and keys, completing the companies rhythm section offerings. The 2 meticulously sampled basses (modern and vintage) sound fantastic, with a varied selection of amp tones that slide into a mix with ease. Combined with midi, articulations and groove analysis you can create very realistic bad parts quickly and easily. Love it 👍🏻David B.

Reviews:
Been playing electric for 25 years. Decided to try and learn how to play an upright. Am very pleased with this bass. Seems to be built sterdy. Sounds great once dialed in. Pick up is really hot so I run it through my sansamp and it cleans it up pretty well. Only cons I really see are the hot pickup, and the case it comes with is just a tad too small. I've got it in right and the stand in, but it still pushes out the bottom a little. Will be getting a flight case for it. Recorded it at home through my computer, sounds great.Jon
First of all, I never expected to get an upright bass for Christmas. I've been playing electric bass for nearly 35 years, even graduated to the six string. I have been playing with the same classic rock band since 1985. I have a broken American Standard that I bought from a guy that bought it in 1941, The neck broke at the scroll when somebody stole it from him years ago at a New Year's Eve gig. He had it repaired, but the neck broke while I had it again. It was weak where it had been repaired before. Anyway, the Stagg bass plays like butter compared to the old one and it can be adjusted more to my height as well. The other bass, although I could play it, was a little too tall for me. The pickup is really hot in it. The other neat features it has is the line input for a CD player, mp3 player, etc, and a headphone jack for practicing. I never tried the input, but I did try the headphone jack. The volume doesn't have to be turned up to hear this thing well through the headphones.PC
