Over all, this is the best Bass book out there, (that I've used) and given that it is a little vague in some areas it still isn't a problem if you read through the chapters first!Mo' Bass
It came faster than expected but it didn't have a CD with it like the description said. It's pretty good it teaches you slapping and tapping which is what I'm primarily looking for. I wish it had more reading and picture demonstrations.alysscardie0
I wanted to begin playing bass, so I began messing around with bass guitars at GC in my price range to see which ones I felt comfortable with. Anyway, I started talking to one of the salesmen and he recommended this book. So I went home and started reading some of the reviews and decided to buy it. Some of the reviews state that the author wrote this book for guitar and just revised it for bass, which happens to be true as the author states himself in the book. All in all this seems like a very well written book and I feel it will be a great asset while learning to play bass. MJS also has these same lessons in DVD format which I may buy to compliment the book lessons.

excellent book for bass guitartaylorjosephmichael
After borrowing this book from a friend I immediately wanted one for my own that I would not have to give back. Unlike some videos I tried, this book starts with basics. Using both words and pictures the reader sees the proper positions and movements for both hands as well as how to sit and what the proper playing position should feel like. Some techniques for hand stretching and strengthening are also included. In 98 short pages this book goes from being aimed at the "complete beginner" to playing with other instruments to reading music and teaching intermediate techniques. Canty's writing style is easy to understand, and at times it felt to me like I was being tutored by someone who actually knew not only how to play, but how to teach. It is certainly not a college level text, but I think that is what made it useful to me: It's a simple instruction manual for a total beginner. If you buy this book and follow the steps as written, I believe you too will learn "How to Play Bass Guitar".branson247

Reviews:
Good at explaining principles of the bass guitar but would be more engaging with recognisable tunes early on. As you learn the notes of new strings, the tunes it gives you to play can sound quite abstract. Otherwise good.winner_richy

Reviews:
This book is very easy to follow and understand. It will unlock the mystery of the fretboard that keeps so many people from picking up the instrument, easy to follow instructions and theory, lots of pictures and diagrams that are easy to apply to the guitar, so you can start making music within the first few minutes, this isn't a magic pill or anything, and you have to be willing to put in some practice time to develop your abilities but it's a very good resource for someone looking to learn to play Bass, I have also used the Visually series book which was written for just guitar, by Charles Kim and it too is a very good place to start. Bottom line is, for less than the cost of a music lesson you can get a head start on understanding what it takes to make music with this book, then find a teacher to work on your particular style with you after you use this book for a short time.live_sweet_market
