I bought these strings to use on an 80s ESP fretless. I put them on, tuned it up played through for a few minutes. Put the guitar on the stand. Next day went to tune it an BOOM G string broke. The previous stings had been on the guitar a long time so it's not the bridge. The strings just suck.EK
Nickel wraps over steel hex core, string to string they are bright and balanced in feel and tone. I like the EB Slinky 50-105 for down tuning a 4 string bass a half step. They don't feel floppy, they intonate properly and are consistent in great quality. They sound warm and shiny when new then mellow evenly over a long time of use. great strings. they really last close to forever without getting that "rubbery" feel or sound with age. having used both pick techniques and finger plucking, these strings stand the test of time and durability. my first set i bought in november and lasted until june. im on my second set right now and they are still going strong. i know it seems unnatural to last this long but they do without any sound or feel difference over time. when i put on my second set of these my bass sounded exactly the same as the first. whether you use a pick or pluck, the paint still comes off where you pluck but its not noticeable unless you're up close. and these sound great from drop D to drop B tuning (since my band switched tuning). very very good buy!JohnTFF
The coating is very poor on the string that I received. I don't care for them and I didn't get what I thought I was ordering. I thought that I was getting coated strings that is easy on your fingers and don't make the sliding sound when moving up and down the strings. These strings are very poor quality.
I haven't used these yet, but with 6 basses, it's coming. I Have used DR Black strings, and like them. Your heart can feel the bass, but clear enough to cut through. I wipe with alcohol, and they keep it awhile. Using a set now, over a year, still good. Use DR, feel the sound. BennyBbenny501

Better than expected. Solid tone. Easy to play. Just right. Not too bright, just clean and tight, as a well made set should sound. Lows still great, even at the slightly lighter gauge. Don't get me wrong, they can get plenty bright if you want that. Just that they didn't seem as extra bright as some kinds try to be because they can with all the "super nano ultra special coated infused …but still hand crafted somehow" type stuff. Was never happy with previous sets on my 5 string. With these, I was able to set up with slightly lower action. This alone is worth it on my instrument. Finally, it's the bass it should've always been. Waited way too long to find these. I hope they keep making them. Probably going to order a few extra sets and try to keep a few on hand. As others point out, I'm not sure there's another set with these gauges for 5 strings. To me these are just right in a lot of ways.Person
Overall: Don't pay any attention to the low price these are great strings. Have used Fender 7250's on all kinds of bass guitars they always sound great and feel good. Been using the 8250-5M set for awhile. Wanted to try a lighter gauge. I get more guitar tones out of these. I was concerned I might overpower them since I'd used medium gauge for a couple of years. These are literally perfect on my Modern Player Jazz Bass V and 2 1993 Jazz Plus Vs. I bought the Modern Player new from Musiciansfriend. I think this light set is the set that it had on it. I use a pick, single and double thumb as well as two finger picking techniques. The E and B strings give a nice low end. I sometimes get this funny feeling that Stringjoy strings are maybe a little too good. What I mean is after playing guitar for probably more years than the age of most of the people who make these strings, I’ve gotten in the habit of changing strings before each show and/or session. One night before a show, I thought I should change the strings. Took out one of my guitars and strummed it, and thought, “Why?†They sounded nearly as good as when I’d put them on – bright, crisp, full, fresh (the sound I prefer). So I decided to see how long I could play the guitar with before I felt I “had†to change them. Four weeks later (for me that was about 8-10 shows and twice as many rehearsals, I finally felt I had to change them….not because they actually needed it, but more because bad habits are hard to break, especially when it comes to playing guitar, and specifically how often most working guitar players feel they need to change strings. Not bad for the price. If you are a beginner bass player these are excellent strings for learning how to string your bass. I broke my E string on a guitar I recently purchased, and used the one in this set to replace it. Very easy to install and sounds just as good as the original. Granted these are not high end strings, but if I didn't have them I would have had to search for and buy what was available locally. ( I ordered two sets the same time I bought my bass.) Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

Finishing touch for fretless bass. The strings allow quick movement over the fretboard and continuous slides with a unique sound afforded by the nylon wrapping of the metal strings. Silky smooth sound but still plenty of bottom end. Not as trebly as round wound or half-round and easier on the fingers for sliding than nickel flat-wound. I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I keep a couple extra sets around at all times but have never had one break.Steve
I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

The search is over. I've tried Ernie Ball, Chromes, and Thomastik and each and every one of these had aspects that I did not like. Either there was too much brightness, little balance, too much mids, bad feel of the strings, or overall tone that did not hit the sweet spot. Mind you those are also quality strings, but they do not shine like these Fender 55's. The search is simply over. The balance is just there. You don't have overwhelming frequency peaks with these strings because they sound even across the spectrum. Ernie Ball is sticky feeling and too bright for my style (which is amazing for some people, Im very impressed with Ernie Ball as well it just doesnt suite my style, these are almost tied with Fender), Chromes are peaky in the mids, and Thomastiks are too flabby and 'tubby' sounding. This is my top recommendation for strings and I think roundwound players should give them a shot.Bass hobbyist
These are long scale pure nickel round wound strings. They sound great; warm, mellow, but still well defined. Very old school. I use them on all my basses; long (34) and short (30.5) scale. The only caveat for using them on short scale basses, is that the larger diameter (low E) may not fit in the center hole of the tuning peg. In that case, just be sure to leave enough of the smaller diameter "core" to fit into the center hole, then wind the rest around the peg. Okay, I am a new player and this is my first set of flat wounds. I was wanting to try flat wound strings for a while.I was curious about how they would sound and play. I know professional players who have shared their recommendations with me, and read review from other players on sites such as "Talk Bass". The price was right so I took a shot. I play a Squier Jazz 4 string, and an Ibanez 305 5 string in our band Soylent Dream. When I got my flats I had to wait a couple of days to put them on my Squier. I was too busy playing to change and break 'em in. What I liked when I took them out was that the ends had different colors on them to make them fool proof to put on. The green silk ends were in pretty good shape. When I put them on my 4 string Squier, I was instantly blown away. If you've never played flats before, it's different. The string feel like silk thread under your fingers. The tone and shape of the sound is warmer and richer. Some round wounds feel a little too bright and almost pitchy and cold. This is different. There was no deadening or flatting out in the mids and highs that I thought there might be. I found they were still very crisp. The set I ordered was 105 to 50 and they are stiffer then a round wound. But after a little playing and getting them broken in they hold tune and can be bent and hammered pretty hard. When you first play them you have to get used to how easily your fingers slide, and you can hit on the fret wire and miss your notes getting a buzz. They can take a beating. I am a finger style player, not a picker. The style of music I play is heavy psychedelic rock. Though I am influenced by guys like Steve Harris and Geezer Butler, but am also a big fan of 70's soul and reggae so BB Dickerson and "Family Man" Barret are huge influences too. For me these flats are amazing. The sound fits my style of playing and I have to say, I want to try these on my 5 string.

These strings do sound great and easy to play but the one set I bought had a dead A string. I followed same protocol as always putting a sharp bend in the string just before cutting as you would do on any round core string to keep the core from slipping. I do this on my DR strings and never have a problem but this A string is dead from this set of La Bellas. Such a shame as the other strings sound awesome. I took the string off and made sure it wasn't twisted as this will also cause a dead string sound sometimes. Still no joy. Great strings but if you also find a dead string in your set, I wouldn't buy them anymore. I will try another couple of sets and be sure before I decide whether I will use these long term.Winston W.
I got lucky and won a pack of these, at some F bass event. I didn't think they would be that great, was expecting them to be average… After putting them on, I was surprised at how amazing they sounded, they have this top end to them I've never noticed on other strings. I remember the only guy who endorsed La Bella's was Jason Newstead. I would say these are similar to D'addarios xl nickel imho. But they felt a little slinkier to me. Not a fan of slinky's but they felt great!victor

All my basses have flat wound strings on them. Recently I purchased a 1956 Danelectro bass reissue. It is a short scale bass. I needed flat wound strings and D'DDARIO ECB81S Chromes light strings are what I chose to string it with. These strings are great. They feel right. They give me good tension. One of the best kept secrets out there. Compare with the pyramid and thomastik pure nickel strings and you'll see what a great value these are. I think all my basses sound best with these strings and have used them extensively the past 30 years and always come back to them. I think Alnico and ceramic pickups work best with these and there are no harsh overtones or twanging. If you like twang, I love the EB Hybrid strings. They're great for that extra edge, but on my Fenders especially you can't beat these strings.

It has a very fundamental tone, good for mahogany guitars. But on rosewood guitars, it may kill off the overtones, which may not be right for some people. Recommended on larger guitars rather than small ones. They do last quite a long time, which helps justify the high price to an extent.J A.
recently asked curt mangan to make me up a custom set of round core monel strings in 12 string configuration. What a great set of strings. I loved monel strings on my maple bodied guitars. But when i saw they had round core available i ordered a set of 6 string strings. They were so good ,i asked about a 12 string set. They dont offer them as of yet, but rep. said they could make me up a set. i askedfor 10- 48,s round core monels, …What a great set of strings. My guild F 412 has always been a stunner tone wise with monel strings. But the round core monels enhanced that 5 x,s .. I put these on my Gibson J-55 and man what a difference over the phosphor bronze that came stock. I have yet to put them on my '29/'31 L3 or Custom Shop martin 0018, but I really adore the sound on my J-55. The J-55 has an Adirondack top, mahogany back/sides and is essentially a Gibson version of a Martin D-18 without the super boomy low end. I love these strings and they really bring out the natural woody tone of the guitar, which is how it should be in my opinion. After using these I really like the sound, and in a weird way I'm closer to that guitar than I ever was before, the phosphor bronze that were on the guitar were just too bright and metallic, I prefer the natural earthy tones. I put this guitar in different tunings and these strings really open it up there and in standard tuning as well. I can't wait to put these on my Martin 000, I just got it so the strings on it are fresh but they're 80/20s and I really don't like them. You can't go wrong with these strings. I'm going to be using them on my acoustics forever. Just vintage, natural, woody earthy tones and I couldn't be happier!Antonio
