I have been a Stringjoy customer now for 4-5 years(I think?) and they are the best strings I’ve ever used on my electric guitars! Love the feel of them and the tone. You guys have an amazing thing going. I would love to try them on my resonator guitar(it’s a square-neck). Beard Guitars makes the strings I currently use on it. They’re a little peculiar as far as the gauge goes though. .18-.20-.29W-.36-.45-.56 but I love the tone of that gauge and like Ariel Posen, I like a fight from my strings. I turned to Stringjoy because I wanted a 9-72 8-string set, for which there aren't many options ot there, unless you go for a custom set. I was tempted by the stellar reviews, so I decided to give these a go. Firstly, these are the clearest sounding strings I've ever tried. They're not excessively bright, but their articulation is amazing, which really helps that low F# string ring true. They are almost clear to a fault, because they emphasise every little bit of fret buzz and string rattle, so you have to watch your technique. Secondly, these are the longest lasting uncoated strings I've ever used. After a month of use, they have shown minimal aging. I don't play my 8-string every day, but still, this is impressive. Also, they don't rust, flake or turn black. They just gradually become duller, while still remaining playable. One bit of criticism I have is the tuning stability. These strings seem to need a certain amount of tension to stay in tune. They were fine on my 27" scale 8-string, but when I tried the equivalent set on my 25.5" scale 7-string, bending made them go out of tune very easily. I need to try the 10-60 set and see if it's any better. Overall, I'm very happy with this set for my 8-string, and I have already purchased more. Oh, and one more thing! Normally, whenever I use gauge 72 or higher, I have to partially unwrap the winding to fit the string into its tuning peg. With this set, the lowest string was somehow able to go in as it is. Nice, lightweight strings with a good feel and excellent durability. The Slinky series give a great bright sound to the player, which is great for overall sound of the instrument. This lighter gauge I recommend for some of my beginner and/or younger students, especially while developing grip and finger strength. Postage from Artist was of course, super fast. Service is generally excellent, and while I have had some issues with their own brand products in the past, they've always played straight and fairly.

I've been using Elixir strings for about a decade now. I first tried them on an acoustic guitar, & was blown away by the tone, the feel, & the longevity. Some will complain about price, but if you add up the cost of changing strings every 1-2 months verses every 9-12 months, you actually save money in the long run. I've been using Elixir strings for years now. Although not quite as bright as traditional strings, the upside is the brightness they do have lasts so much longer. Whereas I used to have to change strings every 5 gigs, I can get up to 30 gigs with that new string sound with Elixir strings.wolfbass1965
Overall: Is it my imagination, or do these strings squeek less? Pretty sure I'm not dreaming. Sure, there's the "normal" squeeking, but I don't hear as much "noise" as I was getting on my previous strings. I seem to get fewer unwanted harmonics when muting with only one finger, and fewer squeeks when I slide my hand to different positions. I still need some practice with muting, but not as much as I thought. I also think I hear more bass out of these strings. Or maybe it's just a better overall tone, but something sounds better, even on the G string. Very nice sound! It was worth the money! Can't say enough good things about these strings. The flat wounds allow your fingers to slide smoothly up and doen the string, making your playing more legato and connected. The sound they produce is great and I've actually received compliments on how good they sound. Highly recommend, they're the only bass string I'lll use!
Plus points: low tension. Upright bass sort of sound. Nice sound a little bit brighter than flats. Negatives: thicker than normal strings makes action feel higher than it actually is. A bit rattley – you'll probably need to raise at the bridge. Finishing touch for fretless bass. The strings allow quick movement over the fretboard and continuous slides with a unique sound afforded by the nylon wrapping of the metal strings. Silky smooth sound but still plenty of bottom end. Not as trebly as round wound or half-round and easier on the fingers for sliding than nickel flat-wound. First time I have tried Fender strings and I am very impressed. Gauges are good too – 110 in a metal flat-wound was impossible for me to play comfortably but these are great.gre4961
I have used the previous Fender tape wound round wounds for years (7120s) on several basses. I mainly play fretless so having the round wound gets much more bite than typical flat wounds and the tape keeps the fret boards in great shape. I have an old Alembic fretless, a fretless Fender Precision A/E hollow body w/ a buffer pre-amp for the piezos and a fretted franken-p-bass made from various Fender parts and using active EMGs. All sound great. I mainly play through an Ampeg PF500 head and a Mark Bass 2X10 bottom and have had zero issues with these strings. They get a lot of crisp high end and a phenomenal bottom end possibly also due to the fact all three basses are active. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend them. I usually change them every 6 months. The only thing negative I have found is that the tape kind of starts to get rough, especially on the fretted p-bass after 5-6 months, but I play a lot. I play in a jazz band as well as sitting in constantly w/ various blues players around St Louis so I have no idea how they would be for slap bass or other types of music. I do constantly get positive feedback as far as the sound of my rig. One of the best things about these strings is they are very quiet sliding on a fretless. I keep a couple extra sets around at all times but have never had one break.Steve
I wanted to try tapewounds as I was going for a McCartney-ish 60s-70s tone on my P-Bass. These are really nice. Smooth and easy on the fingers. Almost feels fretless. I would say they sound like a broken in set of roundwounds with a touch of flatwound tone. They also bend and slide nicely. It makes you want to play solos above the 12th fret. My only complaint, and it's not a defect in the strings in any way, is that you are not grounded. It's something I didn't think about. When you play regular strings you are grounding the bass by touching them. On the tapewound you are insulated from the metal, so if your bass has any buzz when you arent touching the strings, that buzz will still be there when you play with tapewounds.Chris

My new favorite strings. A lot of punch without being overly bright. Smooth feel and sustain. I had been using Dunlop Super Bright Nickels which are a great buy for the money but they were a bit too loose and flabby which caused a lot of fret noise when digging in. The Dunlop's also got dull pretty quickly. The NYXY's sound great with the right amount of tension. comfortable and no fret noise when digging in. They are no super bright sounding. If you want a really bright sound try stainless steel strings. The only issue is that there seems to be a few dead spots, but that maybe my bass more than the string itself. Because these strings have more punch, I might be noticing the fret based dead spots. They definitely seem louder than the Dunlop's. We'll see how long they retain their brightness, but so far so good. The other con is that they are very expensive twice the price of the Dunlop's I was using. I initially bought these strings because my daughter thought they were "cool" and would look good on my solid black bass. And yes, they do really "pop" on stage and can really be seen from a good distance. What I have found is that the quality of the tone these strings produce is excellent! Great quality tone from top to bottom. Our sound guy had to completely EQ my bass on the board because of the richness of the tone. They react well when I want them to, and provide a long and steady tone when I need them to sustain. DR NEON HiDef green bass SuperStrings medium 4-string review: ACTIVATE! These strings grab a LOT of attention from the peanut gallery, so prepare to get plenty of compliments (I was quite surprised to not get jeered by the old war horses; EVERYBODY loves these things). They glow quite well under a black light, but you'll need a lot of it to work; during one show, a single 20w bulb on my mic stand just couldn't compete with the relatively low stage lights it was up against. The strings don't sound particularly different from anything I've used in the past, and feel pretty good to the touch, but I had quite a bit of experience with Elixir bass and acoustic strings before hand, which have a similar texture. Just be warned that these don't feel like metal at all. I had my first set of these for about 8 months before my E string (really?!) broke, right down at the bridge over the saddle. I was miffed, but I was impressed enough with the strings to order a second set. The wear and tear on the coating wasn't really that bad, and I use a pick 80% of the time. I just purchased the DR Neon Green strings and installed them on my Fender P-Bass. I have never used DR's before so I didn't know what to expect.They are very bright and seem to be wound well. I'm still stretching them out so I haven't played too much with them, yet. From what I can tell, they sound very good and bright- haven't plugged into my Ampeg yet. As for the reviews that say that they are hard on the fingers- maybe people who haven't developed caluses on their fingers (who don't play often) think that. They don't feel any worse than anything else. Actually, I think they feel even slicker than the Ernie Ball strings I usually use, but I have always applied Fast Fret to my strings. I guess time (and many gigs) will be the ultimate decision maker for me on these. From what I can tell, these should work-out very well. I've been playing bass for over 40 years, and using Blue Steels for almost half that time. Early on, I used Rotosounds (expensive), D'Addario (short life), and Ernie Ball (inconsistent…had dead strings out of the package). I typically go for a bright and grinding tone (think Chris Squire, dUg Pinnick), and probably change bass strings more in a year than some players do in a life time (typically every other show). I've gone through hundreds of sets and never had a problem with Blue Steels. And now, they're packing them in a moisture proof barrier (way to go). For the money, I haven't found a better bass string. I just wish it was possible to order singles (I usually kill the low E before the other strings).
I've been playing bass for over 35 years and started using Blue Steel bass strings around 25 years ago. I have tried other strings (Rotosound, GHS Boomers and a few others) but nothing compares to the feel, sound and quality of these. Once I started using these I never went back to other brands. I have played Ricks and Fenders for the most part also a Thunderbird for awhile. They were perfect on all of these basses. I should add I never broke a Blue Steel string. I love the "zing and zang" that you get from these strings. That's the best way to describe the sound. Give them a try. These are great! Tried 'em based on reviews here at Musician's Friend, and wasn't disappointed. Put them on my 1976 Ric 4001, and the sound is fantastic. As an added bonus, they're much easier on the fingers than equally bright-sounding strings from other manufacturers, which (seems, anyway) to have translated into some faster, easier playing with a whole lot less unwanted noise. From my perspective, they're giving me the advantages of flat-wounds, without the cost in tone. Love 'em! They sound great. I can't yet comment on the claim of longer life, as I've only been using them for about 5-6 weeks now… Good price, right in line with many other quality strings.

EXL 180s are my new favorite bass strings. They offer an excellent combination of strong, bright, modern tone with a soft, consistent feel. They are very easy to play fast AND clean. Folks with long-scale string-through basses take note; these strings will work with 34"-scale basses, but really aren't long enough for 35" or longer necks. An extra two inches of string length would help.The Old Engineer
This is not my usual gauge but, as Scotty said, the right tool for the right job. My first venture into super light gauges were the Rotosound FunkMasters and RS66LBs. I wrote a review but don't see it. I really love them on my 70s Jazz Bass because they're more comfortable when playing over the bridge pickup due to the lower tension. Rather than adjusting truss rods twice a year on my basses that are sensitive to the seasons, I've started using lower tension strings in the Winter and higher tension in the Summer when necks tend to flatten out. One of my basses, a fretless Jazz, has a maxed out truss rod. It can't handle a high tension string without bowing. I needed similar tension to the Rotosounds but wanted softer nickel for obvious reasons. I had TI Flats on it but really needed the round sound for this bass. In Summer, DR Sunbeams NLLR-40s have been a perfect choice. They allow the fretboard to stay flat giving me the mwah I desire. My Winter strings are these D'Addario EXL180s. They too have been the perfect choice given their low tension. Tonally, both strings are in the same ballpark. The DRs are a little smoother and sweeter and keep their tone for a long time. The D'Addario's start out a little brighter and then calm down. The DRs are round core so are a bit more flexible than a like gauge in a hex core string. They're all terrific strings but you need to try them yourself on your own bass to determine what works best for you. I've been using D'Addario's since '78 and Rotosounds since I started in '77. Both are still my primary choices with LaBella, Thomastik-Infeld, Fender and DR rounding things out. I really appreciate that D'Addario publishes tension settings which some manufacturers won't even disclose when asked. It is a valid factor in string choice.ShortScale
These strings are pretty cool. I like that they make writing and practicing very easy. I put them on my Squier Jazz Bass and I found myself able to move around the fret board with great ease. Of course, your bass will play best if you get it set up or can do adjustments yourself and I recommend it because these strings are pretty far from standard. If I was to play or record with really light strings I would probably experiment with different gauges to customize my set. At least I'd bump the E up to a 100. I play indie rock and I'm not a hard hitter if that helps define what I need. Overall all great strings. I usually play a more standard D'Adario set because they play how I like. These open up faster kind of like GHS, but not as much as Ernie Ball strings (if that description makes any sense). I still feel like the strings have lots of headroom. Like my normal volume is a 70% but I can play them harder to 100% or softer with ease. I'd also say they are really nice for finger styles but have a tendency to "open up" too much for my tastes with a pick.Pat

It has a very fundamental tone, good for mahogany guitars. But on rosewood guitars, it may kill off the overtones, which may not be right for some people. Recommended on larger guitars rather than small ones. They do last quite a long time, which helps justify the high price to an extent.J A.
recently asked curt mangan to make me up a custom set of round core monel strings in 12 string configuration. What a great set of strings. I loved monel strings on my maple bodied guitars. But when i saw they had round core available i ordered a set of 6 string strings. They were so good ,i asked about a 12 string set. They dont offer them as of yet, but rep. said they could make me up a set. i askedfor 10- 48,s round core monels, …What a great set of strings. My guild F 412 has always been a stunner tone wise with monel strings. But the round core monels enhanced that 5 x,s .. I put these on my Gibson J-55 and man what a difference over the phosphor bronze that came stock. I have yet to put them on my '29/'31 L3 or Custom Shop martin 0018, but I really adore the sound on my J-55. The J-55 has an Adirondack top, mahogany back/sides and is essentially a Gibson version of a Martin D-18 without the super boomy low end. I love these strings and they really bring out the natural woody tone of the guitar, which is how it should be in my opinion. After using these I really like the sound, and in a weird way I'm closer to that guitar than I ever was before, the phosphor bronze that were on the guitar were just too bright and metallic, I prefer the natural earthy tones. I put this guitar in different tunings and these strings really open it up there and in standard tuning as well. I can't wait to put these on my Martin 000, I just got it so the strings on it are fresh but they're 80/20s and I really don't like them. You can't go wrong with these strings. I'm going to be using them on my acoustics forever. Just vintage, natural, woody earthy tones and I couldn't be happier!Antonio

I just received these today (3-8-13, not from musicians friend) and was very excited about them. I play in a heavy metal band that tunes to CDCF and my ernie ball super slinky 45s weren't cutting it, so I ordered these. I started putting them on and the tone was great. Once I put on the 4th string (C), it was just about tuned and it snapped. Maybe this was a fluke, but for someone that plays shows, this is completely unacceptable. To have a string designed for low tuning, not be able to tune to C is just ridiculous. No way these would tune any higher. I would avoid these. I ordered Ernie Ball power slinky 55s (same gauge as these DDTs)Cbass419
Sound: great sound. these strings are pretty bright sounding which is what i like, they almost sound like stainless strings, i dont know if they are but in drop c they sound very clear. Features: seem to have a small outer winding so that they are smoother than more rugged strings. Ease of Use: these strings are just like they say super stable so you can drop your action and play fast. Quality: the only problem i have with these strings is that the E string broke on me at the saddle of the bridge. it might have just been a lemon or something but i was in drop C so it didnt have hard tension on it and shouldnt have broken even with heavy picking. this was about two weeks after they were strung up. Value: these strings are expensive but then again theyre hand made so. . .
Really recommend these strings my bass has that twang I've been searching for but without taking anything from the deep basses sounds you want from your bass. When you are stuck in a groove these strings give you so many options to play around with sounds. I bought them for C standard tuning but I've been so happen with them I have learnt half my set list to suit these strings now just for an excuse to use them more. I once used D'Addarios for practice and gigs, then tried the Ernie Ball kind: these have a deeper bottom while having a comparable midrange presence. They're great for rock and roll gigs. The highs have a nice snap to them. Nickel strings are easier on the fingertips than stainless steel, plus the Slinkys last longer than Rotosounds. I've played drop C for the last 4 years. In the past i would buy a pack of Ernie Ball five string set and chuck the thinnest string. This was my solution to never finding the set of gauges I really wanted, and being too poor to purchase a custom set in bulk. Enter the DDT series! First of all it's the perfect balance for even tension for drop C, they keep a lively tone for months without getting mucky and dull. Call me crazy, but I swear they just sound meaner and darker then any other string I've tried. If you are in drop c and playing a four string bass, there is no reason not to get these! These are the best strings for tuning down. I tune down to B standard and these work really well, but I would suguest these for if you're tuning down lower to A standard. I would probablly go with the DDT Heavy bass strings for B standard tuning instead of these. The B string seems a bit too massive a guage and might be over kill. These strings are my favorite for the price point. I've tried DLR's and they do seem to have a better sound overall but they cost about twice as much as these. Nickel wraps over steel hex core, string to string they are bright and balanced in feel and tone. I like the EB Slinky 50-105 for down tuning a 4 string bass a half step. They don't feel floppy, they intonate properly and are consistent in great quality. They sound warm and shiny when new then mellow evenly over a long time of use. I've been playing for a long time. You can pay whatever you like for strings and I have always looking for that Holy Grail set of strings. Some last a bit longer. Some other strings also sound good but these just have that sound and feel for me. I play a lot and properly wiped down after playing these strings last a good long time for me but I wouldn't care if I changed sets two to one against DR's or anyone else's string. Two sets of these are no more expensive than DR's and DR's wish they sounded and played like these. Personally I think these last as long as DR's at half the price and I have NEVER had a problem or inconstancy with these strings. I cannot say the same for GHS, DR's, Rotosounds or others. It's just a great set of bass strings for a more than reasonable price!Thump 54
This is the only set of strings I have used where the low B has the same piano string clarity as the rest of the strings, and keeps its timbre for around 3 months average use!. Most 5 string packs (even Sadowsky) low B start off "just OK" and rapidly develop undesirable atonal harmonics, and after 30 days sounds like a detuned E from a Hofner hollow bass from a 60's beatles recording (yuuuuuuuk!). Before playing bass I always used Ernie Ball on my guitars, both electric and acoustic. I own a Gibson Les Paul (wired like Peter Green) Fender Strat, Fender Tele and a Dean Boca 12 String. I also own 2odd name acoustics along with a Fender Jazz, Epiphone Viola bass and a G&L JB 2 Tribute. I have never used EB strings on a bass. Since I needed to replace the strings on my G&L I decided to try the EB bass string and I'm sure glad I did. Easy to play great tone and the price is hard to beat. I will always use EB on my G&L and will consider them on my Fender Jazz if they have flat wounds. I won't on the Epiphone viola has I only use black nylon wrapped flat wounds on it (the way Paul did during the LET IT BE days).
