Reviews:
Replacing an onboard preamp should be done voluntarily. This was most certainly not. After 1,000+ gigs I 'upgraded my 95' Modullus Quantum 5 from the Bartolini NTMB 18v system to an Aguilar OBP3 loved it for 9 months until it died at a gig (there is no active/passive switch, and yes it was totally EMBARRASSING & EXPENSIVE).The repair tech in Dallas said quote "I've had to replace 5 OBP3's recently, they are made in China now & are NOT serviceable" (the circuit board is filled with epoxy).I ordered a Glockenklang 3 band unit and I have NEVER been happier with my bass. The passive/active push-pull volume pot is almost identical in output (given the tone controls are at center).Much happier!Donno Disposable electronics have no place on stage. It is sitting in a drawer. It has no value.
I've only heard good review for this preamp. Which instantly made me skeptical. Well after blowing my other preamp (all my fault) I tried it and man I should have bought it years ago, it's everything I need and them some. I'm not quite sure how to make this sound like a Real review I sure don't want this to sound like a paid review I don't do paid reviews, especially if I'm spending money on a product. The Groovinator

Reviews:
Overall: I have put this preamp in two of my basses now and I absolutely love it. Super easy to install with no issues!!! This preamp has several cool features I love. For me the best part is being able to select the exact mid frequency you want to boost or cut. It’s also super cool that there are four different curves you can choose from on the treble boost/cut. All these features make for a very versatile preamp you can use to dial in any sound you want right on your bass.In response to the other review on here I don’t know what that guys problem was. When you install the knobs you just have to make sure you leave a little space between the knobs and the nut below them. All you have to do is just lift up slightly on the knob while you tighten the set screw.Timothy
Overall: Dont even bother with this junk…..Will never EVER buy again. EVER!!!!If I could give this system a 0 instead of 1 star I would. I bought this set close to a year ago and it has been a nightmare the whole time. The biggest problem with this system is the "d" shape shafts on the concentric pots. I tried knobs that I had ordered for this upgrade and they did not work very well because the upper small knob kept dragging on the top of the bottom larger knob. I contacted EMG and they said that they sold knobs on their website so I ordered those knobs. They did the same thing. I contacted them again and they wanted me to send them the set with the plate where the pots were attached to. I sent them the whole thing yet they could not fix the problem and sent it back to me with no solution. They are not willing to give me back my money so a year later and I am still stuck with this useless set from EMG. I have installed many high end preamps and also cheap preamps from China and all the pots are always smooth. EMG should be embarrassed to sell this junk. Right now it is still in its box not being used because when I tried to use it the knobs kept sticking and it was very embarrassing. NEVER AGAIN will I by from EMG. They have really let me down. I am at the process of contacting the commerce department in their area to file a complaint. All this calamity because they want to save a buck.Sotero

11. Bartolini Hrtct-5.4ap/918 – 3-Band Tct Preamp, 5 Pots, 1 Toggle (Burbank Era Preamp & Harness)
Product Details:
Tct is the legendary original bartolini onboard preamp. it has bass, mid and treble controls with very low noise and wide adjustment range. it has vintage fmv (fender/marshall/vox) frequency controls so each band affects the others, and if all bands are set to minimum, the output is muted. the tct preamp has a voice of its own, providing vintage color to your sound. it has a mid-frequency notch at 300hz for legendary slap tone. tct is the first bartolini preamp with inter-dependent controls, so it is a tone-shaping preamp rather than a strict eq requiring expertise. a professionally pre-wired and fully pre-tested harness saves the time and aggravation of wiring your preamp and pots into your instrument. wired with bartolini's pro-level preamp and premium audio-quality pots and switches, youll have smooth control and be ready for years of rugged use. the include battery clips and an output jack make it easy for quick installation. all the pots are grounded with a wire that can be connected to the cavity shield or simply cut away if not needed in your installation. everything is pre-soldered with pro-quality pure copper wire that is double tin-plated and protected with semi-rigid insulation so it wont flop around in the cavity or degrade over time. bartolini uses only professional lead-free solder with non-corrosive flux. knobs are a personal choice, so they are not included with the harnessexcept where there is a stacked (concentric) pot, in which a ring knob and center knob is included since they are not as common.

12. Darkglass Electronics Tone Capsule Onboard Preamp
Product Details:
The tone capsule is an unusual, but effective take on on board preamplifiers. its designed to respect your instruments natural character while expanding exponentially the tonal possibilities. how is it unique? it doesn't have a treble control. the idea was sheldon ding walls (ding wall guitars). he thought that making a bass-mid-treble was too normal for his liking because everyone does it that way, so he suggested including a second mid control instead. this second control was configured to operate at the higher end of the spectrum, offering all the benefits a standard treble control (increased clarity and definition when boosting) but with a more natural, less-harsh and noiseless operation.

I have purchased two of these (first for an early 90's Ibanez SR800 w/ EMG BT pre) then my main bass — an early 2000's Spector Euro, replacing an EMG BQC) and will soon buy a third for my Spector Euro 5 string w/ Haz pre. The Tone Capsules are in/out of stock at MF often (Darkglass is a small boutique company in Finland) but be patient. This pre is worth the wait and price!!Barry
There were some problems with the installation of the time capsule. Which could be my fault as well. Maybe I did something wrong. However. Why did you put five star? It's a customer service. I guarantee 100% that you can count on those guys. That they will help you with everything on every their product.Maxim Galchenko

Reviews:
I am very happy with this pedal. Looking forward to using it through the P.A. My mark bass mini CMD combo 12 sounds great . Very close to my real 64 Bassman. Thinking about adding a 15 inch speaker but probably not necessary. Being an old school bass player this really is great for the songs my band plays.
Easy to work with, has a great soundstage to it and to my ears sounds better than Radial DI and plug-ins. Does have a little ‘woofy’ sound to it that a little post eq cut ( in the box) would help. But a great product to get that vintage bass sound. My go to bass sound for recordings! Recommend!
In my opinion, as a bass player since 1967, and a luthier/tube amp tech since 1973 Simon Keats at Origin Effects designs the best sounding pedals (reproductions of vintage amps & compressors) and are the highest quality pedals on the planet. I bought both Bassrig versions which duplicate their respective amps ( the '64, a Fender blackface Showman and the Super Vintage, an Ampeg SVT) which reproduce very accurately these amps from the input to the output jack, and both even have a cab sim on the XLR output. I couldn't be happier with them. Yes, they're pretty expensive, but you always get what you pay for with Origin Effects.johnk

Super clean sound ! Love all the optionshotrodder5
Overall: I've tried everything imaginable to amplify my acoustics. This one is the best by far. The most realistic acoustic sound thru a d.i. you can imagine. I would say it gets you about 90% to where an actual microphone would be. For live concerts, it's such a pleasure to hear this sound coming up out of the monitor at you. For recording, a mic is still best, but often if I am going to be layering parts I will do a few with just the Aura going d.i., and then maybe one part that is actually a real mic on the guitar. The engineers at Fishman who figured this out should be commended. It's amazing. (and by the way – I do not work for Fishman nor do I endorse them or get free gear from them. I just think this is the best sounding thing out there and want to let people know)
This is a truly unique preamp from one of the authorities in acoustic, Fishman. The installation on this was very well thought out. It drills very securely onto the guitar, and the output jack can be mounted in several ways. The pickup isn't too hard to install into the guitar nor the preamp unit. The battery is securely held by a clip but can be easily removed when needed. I don't know how well the low battery indication works but that will be an important feature with such a short runtime of 27 hours. The manual says it will indicate 90 minutes prior to dying so that should work well in most scenarios. The best feature of course is the many "images" of guitars that Fishman offers. People can debate exactly how this magic works, but part of them sound like a paragraphic eq with the many frequencies set for each image. In addition there is some "air" to the sound, flange, chorus…whatever you want to call it. To me it sounds just like an internal mic, too boomy on it's own but a nice addition to the piezo sound. And you can easily attach this unit to a USB port in a computer and try all the images. While achieving some "perfect" glowing image may not be possible, some are quite obviously better or worse than others, and finding 4 I liked was a breeze to load into this preamp. The next nice feature is the ability to further EQ by hand and save each one into the 4 banks. And then on top of that you can dial in the amount of image and amount of piezo sound…and then on top of that you can EQ the piezo sound….and if that isn't enough you can change the phase of the image vs the piezo…omg that is a lot of customization! So you can have one setting that works well for single notes, maybe higher in the upper frequencies. And another that has more midrange for chords. And then switch very easily. Does this exist on another preamp? The manual is ok, but gives just the basic functionality, none of what is going on behind the scenes. For example, it is *implied* that the feedback setpoint frequency is maintained, even when power is off. This is very unlike most onboard preamps with a feedback filter and is important to know, but it isn't really clear. If it is true, this is another great feature as the prominent feedback frequency on a particular guitar does not change much and would make feedback with this unit very unlikely once set. The onboard tuner is nice and although it can hunt sometimes, when you are close to the desired note (the most common and important location) the indication of flat or sharp is very clear and helpful. What is not helpful is any indication that the tuner is on, so when it is not plugged in you may have to guess if the tuner has turned on or timed out. Timing out is a useful feature though to save the battery and unlike many onboard tuners out there. Consideration: this preamp comes with the piezo with is important because the image library is based on this pickup. However, the thickness of the pickup must be taken into consideration. If you are replacing a pickup, or if there was no pickup there at all prior to installation, the saddle may have to be brought up or down. The other issue I had was that the pickup length is a one-size-fits-all so for my 12-string it barely rested under the high and low E strings at the same time. This is not supposed to be an issue, however a longer version of the matrix pickup would solve this. Downsides? Once installed, the barn door is not the easiest to deal with. It has to be spun fairly far to reach the underside stuff (input trim, battery, usb, etc) and if something gets pulled or the pickup wire needs to be moved or replaced…the entire thing has to be removed from the guitar. Although in fairness, that is probably true of any other preamp as well. The plastic screw covers are…screwy and don't stay on so well and come off even less well….I left them off. Another downside is the cost, which is very high. Retail is $500 but there are used and other opportunities for lower street prices. I am not big on spending high $ for gear but this one was well worth it. Yamaha builds in similar SRT technology (although nowhere near as versatile) in their A3 series but there are not a lot out there like this and Yamaha does not sell their preamp separately.adam

I believed most musician knows about Seymour Duncan product either pickups or preamp in the market. They been there for decades and recognized worldwide. Thus this STC 2band preamp is great and usable in any basses. But 0nly thing is up to individual kind of preferences. As for me I love this preamp because it have that slap tone pushpull pot.Very rare to get this kind of mode in some other preamp.Infact I'm an active preamp lover because it turn any passive basses to live.bhka06
Fantastic way to boost you passive bass. The slap switch is like turning on a tube amp and can be adjusted to taste. Cons: finish on the knobs is flat and dry feeling and the circut board is quite large. I had to do some routing to make room for the circut board and a 9v battery. Was worth the work a my 5 string pbass is now a tone beast!cfis4887
