Sound: The stock pickups sound great especially with high gain. Nice crunch and break up. Features: For me the reason that I bought this model is that it is the least expensive way to get a real Edge tremolo. I can do subtle things with the Edge that I can’t do on an Original Floyd Rose. The bar is easier to position and it stays where ever you put it. As long as the torsion bushings on the bar aren’t worn out, the pop in bar is neither too tight or too sloppy. Value: This guitar is worth every penny. Manufacturer Support: I did not use Ibanez customer service and I did order half a dozen sets of torsion bushings, but had to order them from different places. The Wow Factor: I love the color of this one, Desert Sun Yellow. Overall: In the last 2 months I’ve bought 5 different Ibanez guitars, both lower and higher price. I must say that this guitar is the most bang for the buck out of any of my 21 guitars that I own.Got more than 200 bucks off on mine as it was sold as a slight blemish. When the guitar arrived, I noticed it did have a hairline crack in the paint on the bass side at the neck pocket. That was the only flaw I could find and it probably would have happened anyway if I would have got a “new” one.This is the shreddiest guitar that I have. The only thing that I had to address is that the 6th fret was a little proud. Other than that the fret job was good. All the frets were shiny and smooth and no fret sprout.This is the guitar that is at the price point where if you spend more money, you aren’t going to get much better. Overall: This guitar was a total impulse buy and I’m so glad I bought it! It’s easily worth twice the price of it. Can’t get too many mid tier guitars that are neck thru with decent pickups and a 5-way switch that has a fast and slim neck at this price. I mostly play baritone 6 strings and 7 strings but I needed a 25.5” scale for drop C and this is perfect for it with 10-54 strings. I did upgrade the nut with a Graphtech tusq nut and Hipshot locking tuners with knurled tuner buttons and looks even more badass while staying in perfect tune! I have an Ibanez rgib6 Iron Label 28” baritone and this is up there with that as far as quality and playability. The stock pickups aren’t bad at all and definitely surprised me cuz that’s usually the first thing I’ll change in an inexpensive guitar. As you can see by the other reviews people say it’s a great guitar and they’re not lying so if you’re on the fence about getting it then go for it! You won’t be disappointed at all and if for some reason you are then zZounds has a return policy within like 30-45 days so you won’t be stuck with a guitar you don’t love.Josh
Overall: I have been playing the epiphone les paul std for two and half years now,and started looking at semi hollows around five months ago! I did some research looked at reviews and then bought the am93 ays almost four months ago,and just love it! The body is bigger and its lighter then the les paul ,it rests real nice on the lap no strap is neaded.Pickups and tunners excellent !! I would say the neck shape is a (c ) standard! Not thin like a jackson or wizard 3 neck! With the string action low feels and plays very nice!! Flawless machine ! I purchased a Surf Green bass and it's really nice. I am a multi-instrumentalist but mainly play guitar, so I was looking for something with a shorter scale as I am playing bass in a Chris Stapleton tribute. If you listen to the bass tracks in his music, they are very melodic and all over the fret board, so I needed a bass that wasn't too far off scale from a regular guitar. This bass nails it. Very smooth and easy to get around. As for the sound, it's perfect for what I need, and there's so many other tones you can get as well. I still get a nice deep punchy sound, even with it being short scale. It was actually setup real nice out of the box, good enough to where I haven't adjusted anything yet and I've been playing this every night for about a month now. The workmanship quality is great too – I haven't noticed any flaws in the guitar yet. This is a great bass. If you're looking for something short scale, this is a really nice option.
I've been playing guitar for 15+ years and recently started playing bass for a touring gig (indie/surf/punk band). Simply put – this bass rips. If you're a good guitar player you will be able to shred this thing with little effort. If you're a good bassist I'd imagine this thing feels like a toy (but still sounds like a proper bass). I'm a small dude (5'9", 140 lbs) and the Mustang feels beyond comfortable standing, sitting, playing live, etc – not much heavier than the average 6 string. The stock pickups sound better (IMO) than a $1,200 early 2000's Jazz Bass I was playing before I got the SS. I've been mostly rocking the neck (P) and middle (P&J). J pickup sounds pretty weak on its own tbh but I imagine it would sound pretty gnarly if you wanted to record a lead line with it. THE ONE MASSIVE CON: The stock bridge, like every other Fender offset in history, IS TERRIBLE. Fender sent me this bass personally and it was shipped in a cardboard box (so who knows what happened in transit) but upon arrival the E string was rattling and producing dead notes after the 7th fret, as well as not staying in tune for more than the duration of one song. The issue: the bridge pin was loose and causing the saddle to slowly lower while I played (the poor quality of these parts is exactly why this bass is so affordable). I adjusted the action and tightened the pin and all seems to be okay for now… playing a 45 minute set with it tomorrow so cross your fingers. Bottom line – if I didn't know how to do a basic set up on my instrument I would hate this bass and think it sucked. That being said, if you're halfway competent and looking for an affordable SS, this is the best option in 2017. Oh! First time owning an instrument with Pau Ferro and it is noticeably smoother/faster than rosewood. Tone is on the darker side but still bright enough to cut through.Richey
I picked this bass up after switching to bass from guitar. I'm a professional musician, playing 35 years. I bought this bass thinking that the scale would be great for me as a former long-time guitarist and that it would suit my stature (I'm a very short guy). Well, all of that was true, but I encountered two very troubling issues that would end up costing me a significant amount to fix. 1) the pickups were not good. I have had cheaper basses with much more consistent sounding pups. The jazz pickup's output volume was drastically lower than the P pickup's volume output. When switching between the two, I ended up having to turn up the amp volume and roll my volume knob back and forth. Annoying. I would expect this on a $200 bass, but not on a Fender, even a low end one. I spent $120 on a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder PJ pickups and instantly fixed the issue. Sounds WORLDS better now. 2) The neck was slightly twisted and I had to have a shim put in on a brand new bass. I could have sent it back, but by the time I was aware of the neck issue, I had already installed the pickups, so I chose to deal with it. These negative things aside, now that I have spent over $200 to get her set up and playable in the studio and on stage, I love it. It isn't too heavy, it has a slender neck, and I have replaced the horrid mint colored pick guard with custom-made LP pickguard. There really is nothing else in this scale or pricepoint that is any better, body and feel wise. Although there are lower priced basses (Squier Jags, Ibanez Talman) that have better quality pickups. I spent $20 on a bridge cover and now people think this is a 60's Mustang… so after all that, I guess I'm good with this. But if I had known I'd have to do all of this, I might have shelled out for a Warwick or something.Crowolfe

I am absolutely loving this bass. I am a guitar player who wanted a bass for recording. I had been using a Squier bass but wasn't satisified. It just didn't sound and feel like Fender Precision Basses I'd played in the past. Decided to pull the trigger on this, and am so glad I did. It is significantly heavier and just feels much more solid. The fingerboard is fabulous. The back of the neck is so smooth and comfortable to play. The frets are perfect. Hardware so much better overall. Tuners much more solid…less tuning issues. And the sound is exactly what I was going for. It sits in my mixes so much better than the Squier bass was. And it is beautiful on top of everything. Can't recommend this bass enough.William
I purchased the Dakota Red Vintera Precision bass because I have been looking for that vintage feel and sound without having to mortgage the house. I wish I could afford a true vintage '58 Precision Bass, but the Vintera does not leave me disappointed. The first thing you will notice is it's beefy neck. If you are looking for a slim modern neck, this isn't it. It is the vintage "C" style neck with a wider fretboard which feels really good to me IMO. The gold aluminum pick guard really stands out next to the red of the body. The craftsmanship and finish is excellent; no fret sprouts or blemishes in the finish. The electronics are excellent with no buzz or crackle and the pups definitely have that vintage sound, particularly when the tone is rolled all the way off; you can definitely channel your inner James Jamerson and Duck Dunn. If you roll the tone back up it nicely brightens things up. I did have my luthier complete a set-up on it and I did change the stock strings with La Bella flats to further provide that old school sound. If you are looking for a bright modern sound then you may want to check out the Vintera Jazz basses. I play the bass through a Fender Rumble which allows this bass to sound it's best. Lastly, the tuners do their job well and provide stable tuning. This is an excellent bass and I have no reservation with recommending it if you want the old school feel and sound. I've been a Precision Bass player since I started playing bass years ago. This is my first "real" Fender bass however, after playing several different Squier basses over the years. While Squier makes great instruments at a fair price point, this Vintera Precision is like a different world compared to my previous basses. You can feel the overall quality of the parts, the fit & finish, and the materials just by picking up the bass and playing around on it. I received it in the mail almost perfectly set up by Music Store. Only the action was too high for me, but that was an easy adjustment. The bass has a wide, not too thin neck profile that is not very deep. Super comfortable to play. The nut width is slightly larger than on other modern P-Basses which is nice if you like the extra space. I really like the way this forces you to play a little bit different compared to a narrower fretboard, like for example on a Jazz Bass. The difference compared to a regular P-Bass is pretty small. You just get a feeling of more space for fretting. The fretboard radius is also a bit smaller than on a modern P-Bass. This makes for a very balanced playing feel in my opinion. These differences are all nice touches and make for a slightly different playing feel, but don't make it any harder to play than a regular P-Bass. The sound is absolutely wonderful. The 50s-style pickups have a slightly compressed sound that sound great on its own, plugged directly into a DI box or an interface. I replaced the factory set of strings with .045-.105 LaBella flatwounds which is a perfect fit for this pass. The low-mids are greatly enhanced by putting a set of flats on this bass. It sits beautifully in the mix and is never weak or overpowering – always perfectly balanced. The fit and finish of this bass is great. I'm not one to go looking for faults in the paint or anything like that, but I absolutely have not spotted any quality control issues with my bass. The hardware is absolutely fine and does the job. You don't get a massive bridge or fancy hardware here, because everything is done to vintage specs. You can, of course, modify these parts later on, but I really don't think that's in the spirit of this vintage-focused instrument. If you want to put a more massive bridge on the bass and modify it in other ways, I would choose a Fender Player Series P-Bass instead which is a bit cheaper – you can spend the difference on your mod parts. The bass is surprisingly light. If you have back issues or generally dislike heavy instruments, I would definitely recommend this one! The lack of weight does not impact the sound quality at all. The only drawback is that, in some positions, it can have a little bit of neck dive, not to a point where it really becomes a problem, however. I always wear a strap even when sitting down, and that takes care of the very slight neck dive very easily. One thing to keep in mind is that the hardware, specifically the bridge and trussrod, are truly built to vintage spec. This means that the string height adjusters on the bridge do not have tiny hexagonal screws but small slotted screws instead. You will need a very small slotted screwdriver to access these screws. The trussrod can only be adjusted at the base of the neck which can be annoying. You need to remove the neck in order to adjust the trussrod. Here, again, there is no hexagonal screw but rather a large philipps screw to adjust. Small minus points for these features that could have been left out in favor of more modern solutions. I guess the placement and types of screws used make it more true to the vintage specs, but I would much prefer if they had just chosen the modern versions instead. Overall, this is a very beautiful and great-sounding bass that I can only recommend if you like P-Basses, vintage sound, and flatwounds. The build quality is fantastic and I have no doubt that this bass will stay in great shape for a long, long time.

When I purchased mine I had it sent to my house. 5 days later and it comes in with busted knobs and I had to take it in for a refund. They had another in stock and I took it home. With a setup, this bass is WELL worth its price. The nut width isn't as narrow as I'd prefer, I'm more used to the size of the Jazz bass, but this still plays quite nicely for me. While taking inspiration from many classic instruments, the style manages to be unique, and the bass always gets compliments at shows. Controls are easy enough to become second nature quickly, pots turn nice and smooth, and the selector, treble, and bass knobs all have nice tactile notches at their halfway points which is incredibly helpful. The only reason I took off half a star is the angle of the output jack is just super awkward if you typically use right-angle cables, which I do, and only a little less awkward if you don't. Also, not a reason to avoid buying the bass, but it must be said, CHANGE STRINGS IMMEDIATELY!! This might be TMI, but the grooves in the stock strings would pull on my arm hairs EVERY TIME I rest my arm on the bass (and my mustache hairs when I'd give the bass a little kiss at night)
This beast of beauty is must have for people who like to play a bass with a different touch.. the touch is where it happens, it feels very good and it is very playable even for a guitarist like me, a real challenger this awesome Ibanez! the sound of the standard strings surprised me a lot! The sheer power tone and bizarre sustain almost too much.. it just keeps on going haha! The sound settings are all very noticeable adjustable and a good thing , i like the click in the middle of some pot settings so you know where they stand. it is a great help to create your sound. The six smooth twisting mechanics work like a dream, no play or other rattle is heard while playing this monster! I like it alot and i am very pleased with this beautifully build instrument.

I really wanted this bass for a long time it just looked so cool in the sea foam green roasted maple neck. I just couldn't get out of my bubble on a p bass. I finally said screw it and give it a try and I'm glad I did. First off i opened this it came perfectly setup and ready to go no fret buzz or anything this is my first multi scale bass and it wasn't hard to get used to once in awhile I'll mess up but I've gotten used to this bass now and it's easy. The sound. While as the pickups are very dark the pre amp cleans it up nicely I choose not to use it tho because I'm more of a passive player it's nice to add for a boost in a song tho so it's cool to have. With a lot of eq and the right cab this comes together really nice I would recommend using stainless steel strings to help give more brightness to this. The body is really nice I can play for hours standing up without problems in the shoulders. I recently bought a new fender p bass for a lot more than this bass and from putting them off together I would say this bass is different and has more benefits than a classic p bass you get a lot more sounds stainless steel frets and the roasted maple neck which I wish was a thing years ago. Which bass would I prefer we'll it be the Ibanez at this point because of all the great features it's priced well plays and sounds great for the money my number one thing about any music I've done for the last twenty years is something that cuts through the mix easily the p bass has always been my go to it's easy and you get to work right away this bass is on that level just add more mids and high end and your set I've been recording music for clients with this bass for about a month now and they are very happy with there recordings I will continue to use this bass for now on no more tuning to e eb d c since I got this I've relearn to play everything in one tuning and it's awesome it saves so much time I couldn't be happier with this bass and would recommend it to anyone out there.Anthony
I had been looking at the EHBs for some time now and finally pulled the trigger. Needless to say, I have not been disappointed. Having severely injured my left shoulder in highschool, the weight of basses caused problems over the years and was only getting worse as time went on; especially 5 and 6-string basses. Problem solved. The weight of the EHB is perfect and I no longer suffer those issues. It's ergonomic design is supremely comfortable both standing and sitting. The variety of tones from the electronics is superb. The instrument arrived in a timely fashion and the setup was spot on. The only "issue" is a slightly cosmetic one involving the top layer of the body not being perfectly aligned with the controls (less than a centimeter gap). It doesn't affect the sound nor playability so it wasn't worth a change in the rating.G. Brown
Overall: This is the nicest bass guitar I have ever owned. It is super light weight, has so many different tones that you can't possible not find what you're looking for. The back of the neck is so soft to the touch is makes for fast playing and very easy slides. The tone this guitar puts out is unbelievable. It is so clean and crisp and clear I don't think any other bass out there sounds this good. The guitar stays in TUNE!!! I use a strobe tuner and on occasion I might have to turn these monster tuners maybe 1/20th of a turn. The intonation was perfect right out of the box. The bridge is so beefy. I think this is Ibanez's best bridge they have ever made. The strap locks are sturdy and beautiful as all of the hardware is. This neck is awesome and beautiful craftsmanship. The wood used for the body is gorgeous and the dragon's eye finish is spectacular. My wife is very jealous of this instrument or should I say work of art. BUY IT!! You will not regret it.Robert

I've played and owned many different basses over the years, but this one is hands down the most comfortable bass that I've ever played. The neck is fast and easy to play, the fret work was superb, and the sounds that you can dial in are very versatile for just about any style of music. I was also surprised that as a bass it was almost as light as my Ibanez S61AL electric guitar (and that thing is feather light). This bass has many great features and I was suprised by the light weight, the ergodynamics of the bass, the neck wich is amazing and feels great and the sound which is big and very versatile. The only thing I would chande are the sidemarks. In some dark environments you can't see them. They should have been white.

Overall: I had a Fender american pro jazz 5 bass and had a hard time playing it. I have short fat fingers and my Fender would just wear me out.I found this bass and tried to buy one they had none. Finally zZounds came up with some and I got my hands on it. Cut the strings off and put a set of low tension LaBalla on her the B string is a .118 they are flats and fun to play.With the narrow nut and the thin C she is more like playing a 4 string fast and smooth and sweet and a growl better than the big Fender. Have had the Schecter J5 for almost two months now and it still my go to bass. Great J bass with modern features. I have an American Fender Deluxe Jazz V but wanted the 17mm spacing, and flatter radius the Schecter has. I did replace the pickups for hum canceling barts since I prefer the tone and play some noisy stages where hum is an issue, but the stock ones are not bad at all and have a modern J tone in there if that is what you want and the coil-tap was pretty cool and would get you in vintage tone territory. Keep the schecter on your short list if you are in the market for a Jazz style fiver.RickC

If you are tired of searching for a professional sound buy this bass. I hated the mim fender deluxe model, but fender did something special with this bass. It has a clear piano like quality to it. My two sire basses sound like toys up against it. I have wasted so much money on lesser basses. I'm just trying to help my fellow bass players out there. Everyone says that I sound good playing my other basses, but there are certain ugly overtones that I don't want to hear in my bass. This bass doesn't have those unwanted frequencies, it is voiced beautifully. I know that most of tone is in the fingers, but at the end of the day you know what you want to hear. If you are an audiophile this is the bass for you. I have spent weeks demoing this bass and no matter what amp you run it through it sounds good. I played it at a church last week and all I can say is it was nasty. My wife ordered mine yesterday for my birthday and it's suppose to arrive today, fingers crossed.Eric
I've owned and played bass guitars for 30 years now and I've owned several fender basses and the myriad clones out there of the J and P basses. That history and background left me with a bias against fender and an eye for other "better" production guitars like the Stingray which is my other go-to bass. That being said, I am blown away by this bass. It is a SOLID instrument with no flaws or blemishes that I can detect. It came from the factory with an almost perfect setup. I had to make a minor intonation adjustment on the low B and E strings but the string height, pickup height, and neck position were perfect. Fender's Ultra Noiseless pickups (a stacked humbucker really) sound great in passive mode emphasizing a fat bottom end and the tone nob adds a good bit of mids. The highs are kinda meh for me but the active switch takes care of that and I can get as bright as I want. The 18v active preamp provides a lot of room to boost or cut low, mid, and high frequencies to get just about any sounds I want (I still prefer my Sting Ray if I want to get real funky). This is about the best sounding 5-string I've had. Most 5-strings sounds great as 4-strings and SUPER muddy when you work the low-b string but this bass brings it out without too much mud.T. DeWees
I bought this base back in April 2022. It sounds great and plays great. However, the front pickup recently quit all together. After a tech looked at it, it was discovered that it was a bad front pickup. It was beyond the store warranty, so I took it up with fender. After 2 weeks of going back and forth between them and the store that I bought it at, it was determined that fender would send the pickup to the technician if my choice and they would fix it. But it would take 30 days because they send it directly from the manufacturer. Which still boggles my mind, because the slowest mail would be less than a week? So my opinion of fender customer service has dropped considerably. A working musician doesn't have 30 days to do without their instrument. This is unacceptable. I decided to purchase the pickup myself. I can get it in the mail in 2 days, and put it in myself. However this is a great base if you happen to get one with good parts in itJerry

I have previously played and owned only long scale basses. Have always wanted to try a short scale. Went to my local GC and tried a few they had in house. The short scale Sterling was a nice looking bass but the fret work was terrible. Based on reading other reviews I took a risk and ordered a Squire CV 60 Mustang. It is a beautiful instrument. Arrived in great condition with absolutely no flaws. Finish is great, Fretwork is great, string action and intonation were nearly perfect. Hard to believe that Squire can make an instrument like this for such a reasonable price.Jim
I have always wanted a short-scale Fender and decided to pull the trigger on the Squire CV version. Being a Gibson player, the 25.5 scale length always threw me off but this Mustang is very easy to play/swap between my Les Paul and 335's. The single-coil tones are great and certainly a contrast to the humbuckers & P90's I usually play. To be 100% honest, you better have some skills in setting up guitars and polishing frets or be prepared to pay a tech to get these guitars to their full potential. I had to completely polish the frets and fiddle for weeks to get the action to my liking. A neck shim is almost essential to get any height on the bridge and provide enough downward pressure to keep things intonated. I have no idea why Fender doesn't do this on all Mustang's, Jazzmasters and Jaguars since this is a very well-known issue. Once dialed in and frets polished up, this Mustang is a little tone monster.Jason F
Sound: It's a classic Mustang sound. Ease of Use: The Mustang bass was originally made for younger players and students, but it has a serious professional following as well. Quality: The only problem initially was rough fret ends which were quickly taken care of. Look for pro advice online as to how to do this. Value: Because I owned one before, I feel this is worth the selling price. Manufacturer Support: No contact with Fender about any concerns. Unless it's something out of my ability I'll handle it myself. The Wow Factor: When I first saw the "Vintage Vibe" Mustang bass, it owned me. Overall: I've owned one before and had to sell it. Incredible instrument. I've always preferred short scale basses because they're so much fun to play. Had to buy this one. I like playing this bass more than my 2001 American Series Precision bass! Purchased the Walnut version. This is the first guitar which I had to do nothing to it out of the box except an initial tuning. All screws were tight, the nut height was correct, the relief was good, the action was good with NO fret buzz, the finish was flawless, the fret ends were perfect and the intonation was spot on! I've never seen this, especially for the price point. I love the short scale of this instrument and it can be played as fast as you can do. Wow! I'm happy and impressed. I like it even more than my Ibanez Gio Mikro. Gretsch has done something with the pickups as ther is NO hum from the pickups even though they are claimed not to be humbuckers after all.John
To start, I have particularly small hands for an adult lady. I started playing bass about 6 months ago – I have been playing guitar for about 2 years now and am comfortable with different scale lengths and string gauges. I started playing bass with a standard scale instrument and struggled for the first time to reach across four frets, and felt like my progress was stalling because of the instrument I was trying to use. Decided to try a short scale and it instantly made a world of difference in my playing; this bass just feels good while holding and playing for extended periods of time. The bass is also beautiful! I love the retro vibe, between the shell pink body and the vertical text on the headstock. The walnut fingerboard has the most beautiful markings on it; it's my favorite fingerboard on any instrument I own, which includes much more expensive instruments that sport rosewood, ebony, pau ferro, purpleheart, and maple fingerboards. I was worried the tone would suffer from the shorter scale but I actually much prefer the sound of this baby compared to the standard scale I had previously, and have had no trouble tweaking the knobs to dial in just the sound I'm looking for. This is my first Gretsch purchase but I am definitely sold on the quality of their products, especially for such a budget friendly price! At the end of the day, I've more than doubled my weekly bass practice time since getting this sucker, which is all anyone can really ask for in an instrument! The only negative I've come across for short scale basses in general is you'll have fewer options when it comes to string choices compared to standard scale, and especially compared to guitars. PS – shout out to my gear advisor Ryan T. – he rocks! Despite my being a relative n00b to guitar and bass, he treats me with so much respect and seems genuinely interested in my musical journey. I bought this base in December. It was advertised as having to humbucking pick ups. That is untrue there single coil pick ups and they've hum very loud. I put GHS Bright Flats on it. I can't get the intonation set correctly. I am not an expert but this is the only bass I couldn't get close. The bridge is very cheaply made. The tuners are also cheap and loos. You never know how far you will have to turn one to tighten or loosen the string. The bass sounds good. I have had cheaper basses that was better made and sounded better. If GC doesn't give me back my money or in store credit I will sell it. I did by the extended warranty. If I have to sell it I would not go back to GC. This is the second Jet I got from there. The jack kept falling out of the first one. I am not driving two hours each way just to talk to them.William

Bought this one for the kids, but it's so much fun I'll probably play it more. This has to be one of, if not the best short scales in this price range. Mine came with a great neck, good frets and no sharp ends. Weight wise, its a little heavier than I expected- maybe 7.5 lbs? Fingers, pick, slap, all sound good with no rattles. No neck dive. The only weak point I think is the cheapo bridge. Its really unstable and the E saddle could be bumped and moved too easily. I ordered a Hipshot when I ordered the bass because I hate these style bridges anyway. I'd have had to shorten the screw or maybe just cut off some spring length on the stock saddle for the E (and possibly the A) to get them to intonate. Get the bass on sale, a Hipshot for another fifty and it's a performer on par with basses that cost a grand or more, and still less than competing Squiers or Epiphones that also probably need upgraded bridges. I mainly just use the P in a PJ setup, but installed a Fender J anyway because this one was noisy at home (but not at rehearsal for some reason). I had to carve away about a millimeter of wood on top and bottom of the bridge cavity to fit the Fender, so be aware that aftermarket pups may not be a straight drop in. Upgrading the pups is not really needed though IMO. The tuners have the large posts so breaking strings is less likely. They seem to be holding pretty well. I can get through a few songs without having to re-tune, then it's only a minor tweak to the E and A.Lothar

I can’t say or explain enough, how great this short scale guitar is to hold and play, especially for a “senior” musician looking for comfort on stage! I got this bass for my son as he’s wanting to learn bass and music theory from myself . I’d been teaching him on one of my fleet of basses but he was complaining that it was too big for him so I decided to look into the small scale range at a reasonable cost. I seen this bass which, to me, looked perfect for an 11 year old to learn on . After receiving this bass I gave it an inspection and I was very impressed with its factory set up and the general build of this bass. I plugged it in and gave it a blast through one of my smaller rigs and I was literally left flabbergasted at the sound of this thing. It’s a little ripper! It particularly sounds best when using a pick with it but it can hold its own finger style too. I’d be quite happy using this bass on stage and I have many basses by distinguished brands ans custom built basses by luthiers . It goes to show that what’s perceived as a lower end instrument can actually prove to be a hidden gem. It’s loud, it cuts the mix and it plays like butter. I've been playing guitar for many years. Dealing with the pandemic isolation, I decided to teach myself bass guitar. I have had standard scale basses in the past but never warmed up to them. I tried a short scale and, viola, I now enjoy the instrument. Guild has been making quality products for ages and this bass continues the tradition. I'm glad to have it in my guitar family. Superb joinery, finish and fretwork. I find this bass to be very comfortable to play and especially like the neck width (narrow) and profile. Don't understand why it ships with round wound strings, because this bass cries out for flats! I put some Chromes on mine almost as soon as I got it. Do take note that many short-scale string sets are too short for this bass because even though it is, in fact, a short scale, medium-scale string sets generally fit it better due to the greater distance between the "harp" tailpiece's saddles and ball end attachment points (when compared to, say, many Fender bass bridges). The individually height-adjustability of the pickup pole pieces is nice for dialing in even string-to-string response. On many other basses, this procedure is more a matter of "splitting the difference", since it involves raising or lowering the entire pickup. In response to another reviewer's comment about limited tones: I have found that to whatever extent this may apply due to the single pickup configuration and passive circuitry, the tonal palette of this instrument can easily be expanded with careful amp selection, an outboard pre-amp and/or various pedals (not that it can't stand on it's own, unsupplemented). I run mine through 2 amps simultaneously (isolating the signals with a Lehle AB/Y pedal): adding very mild gain/distortion to one output with a Darkglass pedal and leaving the other clean to maintain fullness of the lower freqs. If you're wondering about the ergonomics, the body is almost exactly the same size as that of a Gibson ES-335. If mine got stolen or destroyed, I would immediately buy another one. I've tried several other basses since buying a Starfire, and always wind up going back to them: they just look, sound and feels "right". I also have a Starfire II, but don't like the Starfire I any less on account of that and don't plan on getting rid of either one. This bass was intended to complete my small collection of bass guitars. I had considered other semi hollow body instruments such as Epiphone and Fender. However, I'm not a fan of anything made in China or Indonesia but I have owned Korean crafted instruments in the past and I can say I've never had a complaint about them whatsoever. This Guild Starfire is a very comfortable short scale bass. The neck is narrow at the nut, similar to a jazz bass, and the string spacing is not too tight for me. The sound is very familiar to anyone who follows the early days of 1960's psychedelic rock bands, Jefferson Airplane. or The Byrd are two great examples. But this Starfire definitely holds its own in any country or western music genre band. My own band mates complimented and love the sound it produces. It's definitely enough as a single pickup model, but there is also a two pickup model also available. But I prefer the original look, feel and sound of this single pickup Starfire bass.Taino Ti

Well… Once again Fender short changed me on the pickups. They're flat and have no punch or power. I had this thing for a week and took it on stage with me. I kept having to crank up my head unit to be able to hear it. Plus the bridge screws were way too tall for the saddles. I'm a pick player and they were cutting into my pinky as I played. I had to take it to my guitar tech. After I bought a set of Seymour Duncan quarter pound pickups and had him put in new saddle screws the thing plays and sounds awesome. I only have it 3 stars cause it's pretty and it's super light weight.Daniel

Having a couple guitars I was curious about the short scale. Came across a Mustang P90 in surf green with maple fret in the open box section. Awesome deal , guitar is a joy to play. Overall: I can't believe there aren't any reviews of this guitar yet!I have the Burgundy Mist version of this with the pao ferro fretboard which, sadly, zZounds no longer carries. It's pretty, really pretty, and it exudes a seriously vintage vibe. (I saw an antique Burgundy Mist Chevrolet last week and I immediately thought of my feisty little Fender.)The hardware; bridge & tuners, is your standard MiM Fender quality. They're more than up to the task. The Strat-style bridge makes this an easy guitar to keep in tune. (I once had a 1978 Mustang and keeping it in tune was a nightmare that not even Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft could imagine.)The MP-90 pickups are capable of so much that it I could fill a whole page trying to accurately describe them. They are beefy enough to really drive a good tube amp. (My main amps are a Marshall DSL1 and Vox AC4-C112.) On a clean setting the neck pickup on its' own isn't particularly impressive, kinda dark, but the middle and bridge positions are really versatile if you tweak the volume and tone controls.With distortion, in my case a Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion (it's more of a gargantuan fuzz than a distortion pedal), all three positions sings with a tone that would make Leslie West smile broadly.I'm not a big guy (5'9", 150 lbs) so the small offset body and short scale neck are really comfortable.There is only one real drawback to this marvelous axe but it's something that shouldn't for even a second dissuade anyone from adding this guitar to their guitarsenal, and that's the pickup selector switch. It's junk. It cuts out and is rather staticky (is that a word?). It's a cheap piece of junk but it usually works so I can deal with it. (And you can as well.) I'll eventually replace it but there's no need to right now.My particular specimen had a truly beautifully grained pao ferro fretboard, with the frets being smooth and very well dressed. I love a big monstrous tone and this little wonder genuinely delivers.(Fender's prices have gone up since I bought mine but this particular axe is an absolute joy to play and for the price is still a true bargain. It loves, LOVES, full six-string power chords so if you're in a Mountain tribute band then you'll find a lot to like in this guitar.)I am first and foremost a "Telecaster guy" but I love pulling out this little dude and blasting away like Han Solo in a cantina full of Greedos.I've gone on for far too long here but it's only because I really, really like this guitar.[In my 'stars' rating I give this guy five stars in the 'manufacturer support' column because I own a bunch of Fenders and have never had a problem.]Mark
This is a great entry to the Fender lineup and a step up from Squier quality. The craftsmanship is far from perfect however. Nut slots not quite cut deep enough, fret slots cut a little too deep in places and sharp fretboard edges. That's about it as far as shortcomings though. The guitar looks killer in Burgandy Mist and it sounds just a good with the P90 pickups. The Pau Ferro fretboard compliments the looks and mine almost has a tiger's eye 3D effect going on which is an unexpected bonus. The 24' scale, modern C neck profile with satin finish on the back, combined with the medium jumbo frets and a 9.5 inch radius all contribute to an almost effortless playing experience. My one has a slightly heavier body that others I've tried which I'm very glad of as it eliminates any sign of neck dive that can plague these guitars (probably not helped by the oversize headstock). The guitar sounds fantastic clean with the P90s sitting somewhere between a single coil and humbucker and just as good with overdrive. The pickups are also not as noisy as I'd feared so you need not dread the hum. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this guitar and since I'm happy to file my own nuts, as it were, a little tweaking to ensure perfect playability doesn't worry me in the slightest. It's a keeper for sure.

The yamaha trbx305 is a very versatile bass guitar that's suitable for all genres of music. including metal. it has a mahogany body and a set of ceramic pick-ups which can provide warm, beefy, punchy sounds. it also has a smooth low action so it's comfortable to play. the one unique feature on this bass is the 5-way tone switch. this switch has eq settings for all styles of playing. so rather if you play finger-style or play with a pick, the tone switch has a sound selection for any playing technique. I play metal and I personally dig this bass for it's warm punchy sounds. rather if I play live or record music, it fills up the band mix quite well. it also works well with the effects I use. not to mention it sounds killer with overdrive and distortion effects. I'm not quite sure what trbx stands for, but judging from it's incredible sound quality, I'm guessing that trbx stands for totally radical bass xtreme! \m/ lol anywho, if you play metal and wanted to try something a little different, this is a good bass to check out.Metal alex
Rec'd it new in the box from Sam Ash. Candy Apple Red looks very nice. I didn't get as lucky as some in that the set up was not very good. I mean, it plays really easy, but fret buzz all over the neck which comes through the amp. Too low I guess. It didn't want to "keep" the battery in without some fumbling around. Stayed in once the lid was closed. There is a small cut on the side of the fretboard, but doesn't look like an issue. Sounds pretty good in this price range. Played an Ibanez 655 which smoked it in every way, but just out of the price range at this time (near twice the price). So, new strings and 65 bucks for a set up and I think this will be fine for awhile. In this price range I am not dissapointed. It is what I expected except for hoping I could get away without having to have it set up for just a bit. Actually, in this price range, it really is the best I have seen.Chuck

Rather than explain all the reasons I didn't select a different brand or model I'll tell you why I picked this one. To put it simply, it just felt and sounded right. The neck is smooth and somewhat narrow which is great for my small hands. The frets are mellow with no sharp or jagged edges and the ergonomic pick-ups with the thumb/finger contours fit like a glove. The electronics are amazing as well. Aside from my poor finger placement on the frets I don't get a lot of annoying buzz. The five EQ settings are great for allowing me to find the sounds I'm looking for without investing in a higher end accessories. My only complaint about this guitar would be the aesthetics. While I like the feel and contouring of the base, I wish they had a better color selection. Would love to see this in the old violin sunburst color the 204 comes in but I have no complaints otherwise. Having never really played a guitar of any kind I'm happy to say I've already been able to learn a few easy songs like Seven Nation Army. Yesterday I learned Tool's "46 and 2" and have a basic understanding of The Beatles "Come Together". Overall I couldn't have made a better choice within my $300 – $400 budget.JASON
I have only been playing bass for for 5 months and was looking to purchase a brand new one. I was using a used Ibanez that paid $100 bucks for, however, it was killing my shoulder and neck as it is so heavy!!! Upon my online research, I came across some YouTube video reviews on the Yamaha TRBX304. I was hooked! The weight would be perfect, the thumb rest on the pick ups would be so comfortable, and they offered the bass in the color of Candy Apple Red….to die for literally. One problem I had with my decision to purchase this bass, was being able to afford to, put out all of the money at once. Then I came across American Musical website, where they offer payment plans, and I almost didn't believe it was true. But I took a chance and signed up. I was so excited, I couldn't wait to have my next band rehearsal, after receiving the bass just 3 days later. My bandmates, who are seasoned players, said that this bass has great action, it feels good to play, and the color is stella! I am in love with this model bass and I look forward to my next purchase, hopefully by next Christmas, definitely getting myself another color.
I've owned this instrument for going on seven months. Possibly the most beautiful bass I've ever owned; wherever I play I'm complimented on its jewel-like stunning candy apple red finish. Combined with a superior active EQ system, it's a beauty AND a beast. Great variety of styles through a 5-way switch that actually works! Nicely finished, high-quality rosewood fretboard with a satin neck, a bit on the thin side. Currently it's suffering the dreaded winter season's sharp fret ends, but it's only slight. A feature I appreciate (especially after 4-hour gigs) is the body wood, which is substantial enough, but somehow made lighter, I guess by "chamfering" which is what I call tapering, because it's not chambered. Somewhat beefier bridge than a Fender Std American J-Bass, perfectly aligned to center strings directly over the pole pieces. Easy access to the truss rod. The bass could have benefited from a better nut, but it's serviceable. Pups are designed with a scooped out slot as a thumb rest, which I notice other musicians find beneficial (but I don't, depends on how you prefer to rest your thumb). I often use this for practice/rehearsing and sometimes for gigs when I don't want to risk losing or damaging my G&L Kiloton. This really is the only bass I'd consider gigging with full-time at the price–it's that good.MetroPlexBass

Worth every penny. This honestly feels just as good as my Fender's. Build quality is top notch, the satin finish is as beautiful as it feels, love the colour, and I'm very impressed with the anodised pickguard. I have a gold anodised guard on my Fender Strat which feels like nails on a chalkboard if you scratch it with your nail, but that isn't a problem with the guard on this Squier. I don't know what they've done differently here but it's a massive improvement. Not sure what else to say except you should definitely get one of these quick as they are only making them in 2022.Andrew G.

A wonderful bass that delivers the signature Fender bass sound, is fun to play, and is easy on the eyes. Consider that I am not a true bassist, but have used this bass for studio recordings into big mixes and it was a pleasure. I purchased an open box item (3-tone sunburst maple) on quite a big discount, and received a flawless instrument. The only explanation I could find that someone originally had a reason to return this guitar was because the knobs made a slight scratchy noise when turned slowly with the tone all the way up. Easy fix – I got some DeoxIT, 5 minutes later problem was solved, smooth and quiet. Made some adjustments to the string height to get the right action for me, easy enough. I find the taper on the J volume knob to be a little uneven but I don't find that to be too important for anything, just use your ears to get the tone you want. About the pickups: The P pickup is lovely – hot with a pronounced vintage tone with a little modern edge. Love it. The Jazz pickup is a little forgettable, could have a more inspiring sound in my taste, and the two pickups blend okay together, nothing too special (but EQing helps a lot). For this I took off a half star on an otherwise 5 star guitar for the money. The tone knob gives tons of versatility, a lot of inspiring sounds, especially when combined with the right playing technique. It's MIM but I don't see why anyone who cares about sound, playability, and craftsmanship would care in this case. It seems to be built with great attention to detail.Jon
I use this primarily for my home studio, but would not hesitate to use it on the road. The tone is great. The noiseless J/Bridge pickup is very good. The tone is not exactly the same as a regular single coil – I would not say, at least for my style of playing, that the pickup is worse than a regular single coil, just different. I rely more on the P/Neck pickup than the bridge, and it is excellent. I bought it because it was on sale, but now that I've been playing it for a few days, I'd have been perfectly happy with it if I'd paid full price. The neck is comfortable, even in the 12+ frets. And by the way, the image online doesn't do it justice – it really is a beautiful instrument.Jess
Purchased this bass as a passive and durable backup instrument that air travels well. Out of the box, I noted some of the set up quality issues that others have identified. No big problem though, I never have been completely satisfied with factory set up… even with any of several, higher end basses I own. My expert guitar tech set it up for my needs including filing and smoothing the fret edges and replacing strings with the DRs that I prefer. The P and J pickups volume and tone balance is fine and provides adequate source signal that can easily be shaped and adjusted to obtain the presence and tones between rounded to growling for gigging in small to mid size venues with pro-level bass amps (I use GK and Ampeg primarily). Haven't recorded with this bass yet, but I expect it would do well in the studio based on my practice experience with it. I prefer to play higher end, active capable, Fender, Lakland or Peavey Cirrus basses in the recording studio, but this instrument would probably record well if needed.TX Bassman

I tour with this guitar and it has so much character and I fell in love with the tone right away. Rosewood fretboards are not in style anymore so a maple fretboard on a bass is a major plus. Everyone loves it. It was hard choosing the warm yellow or cool mint green. I went with the mint green to go with our beachy image.Kayla
