I had a great experience with Musiciansfriend. I called my gear advisor, Scott, and he went the extra mile to answer all of my questions over about a two week period. My guitar weighs just under 10 pounds. The set up was superb with a low action and near perfect intonation. Phenomenal sound. Just amazing. Each string rings out clear and balanced. This is my first Gibson. I am a Fender player ('69 Jaguar, '97 Strat) so I was afraid I wouldn't like the warm tones of the humbuckers (nearly went with P90 because of this), but I can't compliment this guitar enough. It's a legend for a reason. The only bad thing is the case. It's obvious that Gibson doesn't take as much care in quality control for their cases. Pea sized bubble on the exterior and lining already coming unglued. However, musiciansfriend is working to right this for me.Jonathan

Wow, does this guitar growl. These pickups are so hot, I was startled when I turned up the amp. On clean, every note in a chord is articulated brilliantly. And the sustain is strikingly long and full. I thought the fit and finish was exceptional, and appreciate the quality considering the price. It makes my other guitars feel like I'm riding a bike with a flat tire. It's just not a fair comparison. I am afraid I will have to upgrade my entire fleet now – it has spoiled me. I've been dabbling with learning how to play the guitar for several years, I've even took a guitar class at the local community college but have gotten frustrated easily to where I quit. I'll say that I have had a "on again, off again" relationship with guitars for the last 15 years. I am not an expert in guitars and am steadily learning the process – how they are built, the electronic parts, etc. I decided to give it a go again with this inexpensive guitar that is a great little learning tool for the novice player like myself. One thing I did do when I got this is change the strings. I watched several review videos on this model and one the the first things people recommended was to change the strings. So I bought a box of Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's (10-46) and re-strung the guitar immediately after I got it out of the box. I am pleased with my progress so far. Could be the fact that I found a great website that gives excellent beginner lessons and helps me to understand the fundamentals of guitar playing. Things that the college instructor didn't teach very well. Of course, it helps that I can play the videos over and over! I'm upgrading to a Fender Mustang LT 25 amp, which will give me a huge range of different tones that I can get out of this guitar. As my skills develop and I get better (hopefully), I will look at upgrading to a higher price point guitar. I would love to get an SG! If you are looking to get started in the guitar community, I would recommend this model to get started. Bought for my 15 year old daughter who has been learning on an acoustic guitar and wants to step up to an electric guitar. She did some research and settled on the Epiphone Les Paul SL Vintage Sunburst. DV247.com had the best price and also stock this in other finishes. The guitar arrived in perfect condition and looks great. My daughter played a few chords she has been learning and it sounds good. I'm no expert so can't comment more than that.
This is an incredible guitar for the money. Only thing that needed serious help was the action at the nut. Using the stock nut and a set of nut files, I set it up to my preferred specs of 1/64th of an inch a two the first fret. This ensured comfortable playing as well as tuning stability. After cutting the nut slots to the right height, looks like the file made sure the strings wouldn't catch and now the guitar stays in tune much much better. I would replace the pickups with p90s if I could. Some modification to the pickguard might make this a possibility. Sometimes, I forget I'm playing an Epiphone. With the nut corrected it really is possible to get it feeling pretty good. Here are my personal specs: .005" neck relief measured at the 8th fret. 1/64ths action at the first fret across all strings. 1/16ths of an inch action at the 15th fret. It does not play as well as my Gibsons do: the explorer feels much lower and faster with the same specs and my les Paul traditional does reel in some "big time" tone. In spite of this, the Epiphone SL really does hit the mark. It's capable of all the same specs after adjusting the nut, making for a very playable guitar. I also don't believe the tuning issues are due to the economy tuners since after I adjusted the nut the guitar stays in tune much better. I bought a replacement black tusq nut but have not installed it. I wonder if there's even really a need to do so. This action at the nut is very low but the guitar pulls it off very well. I've always wanted a PRS and now I have one it was worth the wait. The range of tones, the sensitivity of the controls, the playability are all top notch. Not to mention it looks stunning. Out of the box it was all nicely set up, low action and very very playable. I've switched from the stock 9s to 10s and it sounds perfect. I've never been one for coil taps…all the others I have stay firmly in humbucker territory but there's something about these which really work for me – putting one in coil tap and then switching to the middle position is a tone I've not had on any other guitar and one I shall be using a lot. This is the first prs I’ve ever owned and I have to say if this is the quality prs puts out for their SE line, I can only imagine how good the core models are! I mostly play heavier stuff (djent, deathcore, death metal, etc.) and with the right eq settings these pickups do just fine. But they really shine with lower gain and crunch scenarios. I love playing jazz or doing some chicken pickin with the multiple sounds you can get out of the wiring setup. Superrrr versatile, very well built for an Indo guitar. My only complaint is the glossy neck, since I mostly play leads. But that can be solved fairly easily. It’s an easy guitar to play and it plays like butter. Stays in good tune even with whammy abuse. No sharp fret ends, fret buzz, high action, bad intonation etc. played great out of the box with a tuning. Now the only thing I would “upgrade” on this guitar are the tuners to locking tuners. Now that I'm in my 60's, jumping around on the stage with a 10lb Les Paul is no longer an option. I'd never even consider an SG, but it was so lightweigh I thought I'd give it a try. OMG why did I wait so long? This thing is a Rock 'n Roll time machine! Besides being incredibly lightweight and resonant, it sound amazing. And due to the double cut and neck joint construction, it's soo easy to play all the way to the 22nd fret. The wide slim taper neck is incredibly fast… and its light weight means no neck dive. I should have picked one of these up years ago!Steve
Yes, this guitar is 100% worth it. I wanted to wait a full year of owning the guitar to write this so that I'd be certain. There's too much good to write about this SG to be honest so to summarize I can't even call this guitar a rock and machine id call it a musical weapon. It sounds absolutely phenomenal which for me was the most important part. I'm used to strats which id been playing the last 18 or so in terms of playability, it def plays different but it plays really nicely. It has a lot more pop and feels stiffer. The finishing and everything else is top quality as well. Guitar is beautiful. Not only does the guitar sound awesome with literally any type of gain, but the cleans are extremely nice sounding as well. This guitar is the real deal, I waited a long time to pull the trigger on this thing and it was 1000% the right decision.Pd
If you're buying and enjoying an SG you're probably aware it's a unique and quirky instrument. The body is very light despite being all mahogany and it does suffer the classic neck dive and tuning stability issues common with Gibson guitars. But these are aspects of the guitar more than negatives in my opinion. It's a classic shape. It's very light weight and plays easily. If you don't like the Les Paul because of its chunky neck and thick neck pocket you may be pleasantly surprised by the thinner neck and upper fret access of the SG! It tends to be a darker sounding guitar with it's all mahogany body and neck with rosewood board and classic nickel fret wire. But I'm nit picking here. You only need listen to Angus Young's classic tones to hear how this guitar can cut thru a mix with the right amp. The medium jumbo frets and shorter scale length are great for easy bends. With volume and tone controls for each pickup you get a lot of control over the sound of the guitar. If tuning stability is an issue try pencil graphite or Nut Sauce to lube the well cut (usually well cut) nut. Gibson is unfortunately known for let's say less than perfect fit and finish on their instruments. You will probably see imperfections in the paint job and finish if you look closely enough. That's just par for the course with Gibson. But I'm a Gibson fan. They make instruments that don't sound like anything else and the SG is one of those iconic rock and roll machines! I got the yellow one for about $50 less than the red and black ones. I am assuming it is because the color is not popular, but I love it. It is a satin, very similar to my Gibson Melody Maker. As a matter if fact, the guitar itself is a lot like my MM. The size, weight and feel of it and it was a lot less $$. Sure this is a bolt on neck, but I have found that doesn't really make that much of a difference. To ME…. Even though I have been playing guitar for about 40 years, I have never played a P-90 guitar. That is why I picked this up. I like the tone. I am playing around with it quite a bit. It won't replace any of my other guitars, but it is a nice addition.Gene S
After reading the reviews, I went ahead and popped for one of these. Mine needed some setup work. They were 2 high frets that needed to be tapped into place and a neck adjustment. Pretty typical for a brand new guitar. Now for the guitar itself … WOW! This thing sings. NECK: very fast action neck with real Les Paul Deluxe (circa 1970's) style frets make it easy to bend strings. I'll be putting my personal string configuration on it, but the OOTB strings are just fine. SOUND: The combination of the two P90 pickups PLUS the flexibility of the tone control let you get a wide range of sound. I'm playing through a 1973 era MusicMan 112RD 100 and this guitar makes it sound like a Marchall 50. SUSTAIN: I guess this proves that you don't need a 50LB piece of lumber and $1000 to get awesome sustain. Whatever tonewood they are using on these, coupled with the electronics, man this baby sings. TUNERS: Not bad, not great. You need to stretch the strings out, like any new setup. The stock strings did stretch quite a bit and after stretching it stayed in tune nicely, prior to that they went out of tune about every 5 seconds. NUT AND BRIDGE: Nut was properly set and at the right height. It "could come down a smidgen on the 6th and 5th strings, but the adjustment would be so slight as to not be noticeable in real world playing. The bridge also needed to be lowered a bit. That is easily done. Intonation was perfect all the way up and down the neck. As this is critical it's especially important to note that the bridge is a non-adjustable compensating saddle arrangement that has been around since the "time before time" (Planet of the Apes) FINAL COMMENTS: After playing this for about an hour, I realized that these guitar may be discontinued models. I tried to find it on the Epiphone website, no luck. Then I got to thinking that GC could either sell out or the price could go up, so I rushed over to GC and ordered a second one. They are THAT good! I am curious as to what the warranty is, I haven't checked the paperwork that came with the guitar. I doubt I'll have any use for it.E
First of all, it's 2020. Epiphone appears to have improved quality control over previous GC reviews. Just got it out of the box. It needed tuning, but strings are purposely tuned low for shipping reasons. Tuners are perfectly fine. No particular fret buzz. Neck is straight and true. Nut is plastic, but appears fine. Volume and Tone controls & switch work fine. Strap bolts are sturdy. Installed strings are clean, but I'll put a fresh set on in the near future. Frets ends are sharp, and will need to be filed at some point. While the bridge works, it's an "all-or-nothing" bridge. No individual control string adjustment. Just two flat-head screwdriver knobs on the 1st and 6th string. The guitar is feather-weight; a major reason I got it. And the cheap price, as I want something I can carry in public without worrying about getting busted or stolen. No hum or noise when plugged in. I play straight-ahead jazz, so I'm not the best critic on pickups. I actually want a boxy, dead sound. However, I get a good blues tone when I dial in a Blues effect on my stomp box. All by itself without any effects, it sounds great. Got TV yellow rather than red. I had to order yellow, although there were plenty of reds in the store. I suspect you'll prefer red. Yellow shouts at you, but I wanted the "vintage" color. Two mods in the future — a new bridge and filing fret ends. However, the bridge works fine as-is. But you can't control individual string height at the bridge. Bottom line — considering the price, it's a steal !! I've been playing for decades. It does an excellent job as an affordable jazz-box I can carry without worries.Jazzy

Overall: OK folks, so I've owned this guitar for about 6 weeks now and wanted to wait that long before I reviewed it, for you people that are on the fence on this one, here ya go. Now is this a perfect guitar..no, However I think there is a direct comparison to a LP Studio, ….Is it better that a LP Studio?…Answer… YES it is, it nudges out the studio on pickups and locking tuners..everyone knows that 490 series pickups like on the LP Studio are just bad feed back monsters, while the pickups on the S2 Custom are OK..they are best suited for clean tones, the highs become harsh with boost or gain, I had a set of Seymour duncan JB and 59s installed on my S2 and WOW guys and gals..that's the way to go, sounds amazing now, I also replaced the saddles on the S2..the factory saddles were not bad but the graphtechs I installed also made a huge difference in tonality for the better. Now the fit and finish of my S2 was flawless, I couldn't find a single flaw anywhere on the guitar, the neck and fret work where outstanding, I was able to lower the action to .30 on the 1st string and .40 on the 6th under the 12th fret with no fret buzz after I set the guitar up properly, on that note,… the setup from the factory was horrible, really embarrassing that PRS let this go out of the factory this way, if I didn't know how to set the guitar up properly I probably would have sent it back…it was that bad, really no one should have to do a trust rod adjustment right out of the box…but I was able to get it set up and it plays like butter now, so if you order a S2 and the setup is not good, don't worry ..it can be done with a little patience, now my biggest complaint on this guitar and I knew this before I ordered one and it didn't sway my decision on ordering but still is BS..A GIG BAG…Really!! come on PRS …for $1600 dollars it should have come with a hard shell case…cheap, cheap cheap, there cost for a HSC is probably 30 dollars.. Drawn to it by its sheer unconventionalism, the Fallout Tribute is a very decent, different guitar. However, I had very bad luck with the thing, so I'm obviously a little biased. Straight up- those tone controls feel incredibly cheap and loose. As well, I found construction to suffer more than a Squire. The strap button on the bottom looks like someone whacked it with a hammer, so I unscrewed it to find that it was merely drilled…very crooked. Not to mention a few finish issues! This guitar, sadly, wasn't made with the highest amount of TLC. Pickups-wise, this guitar is pretty solid. The middle position has to be my favorite. While the spilttable humbucker mattered little to me, The humbucker itself is A-okay. This is my first time experiencing a P-90, and yes, it is quite powerful. When playing, however, realize you'll be very restricted getting the highest frets- the part of the guitar where the bolt-on is located is chunkier than Superchunk. All in all, I ended up returning it due to the manufacturer defects (it even had a tragically bent allen wrench…dear lord, what was going on?). While it at least looks cool, I didn't like it.Burp
There's a lot to love about the Tribute Fallout. Not least is the price, which made it easy for me to pull the trigger and order my first G&L. Right out of the box, I was struck by the solid construction, super-stable and well-made bridge, smooth tuners, comfy neck profile and nicely-rounded fret ends; all much better than I had expected for the "entry-level" price-tag. The sound doesn't disappoint either – this is a lively and resonant guitar that's loud and spanky acoustically and has a tight, focused tone when plugged-in. The humbucker in the bridge position is right on the money; strong and present and the coil-tap works great. I really don't care for the P-90 at the neck, which sounds kinda wooly and vague to my ears, but to be fair this is a matter of personal taste and playing style – for all I know it might be just right for subtle jazz parts or rootsy blues. Aside from the neck pickup, the only real negative comment I have is about the electronics, which are on the flimsy side. The knobs/pots and switch feel wobbly and loose and there may be some kind of grounding problem too. But perhaps these issues are to be expected at this price and would be easy/cheap things to fix.Ronson
Guitar came nicely set up by Andertons QC and almost in tune. Guitar quality seems perfect to me. Medium weight. Looks solid and certainly not flashy. Nice factory strings. Medium jumbo and 12" radius neck make it easy to play. Love the rather thick sound from the P90 and thinner one from the humbucker pickups. Excellent value. I am the first owner of this guitar! it was purchased from an authorized prs dealer, however it arrived to them with the finest of finish cracks. this is actually very common on nitro finishes and doesn t affect anything on the guitar. i have tried to picture the crack, but it is very thin and not very big either the guitar has some other very minor minor play wear. i d say a few light scratches here and there and maybe a scuff or two, but overall i have taken great care of this guitar and it has never been taken out. overall i d rate the guitar solidly at 8.5/10 cosmetically and a 10/10 on functionality. includes original prs gig bag and hang tag. unfortunately i don t have the trem arm.

Some people say prs just “ripped off a strat and put an ugly headstock on it” Dude fender could NEVER achieve this quality. Strats are awesome, and obviously inspired this instrument, but I’ve played 60’s and 70’s strats, and modern American strats in the silver sky price range. Not a single one has EVER had the response, the feel, the tone, or the magic that this guitar has. I loved the rosewood prs and was about to purchase one until they announced the maple fretboard. Had to wait about 6 months on preorder and it was more than worth every penny and every bit of waiting. The pickups have such a beautiful vintage feel. And it is warm, instead of “ice picky” like some strats can get some times. The tone knobs on this guitar are more responsive than any guitar I’ve ever played, and give all 5 pickup voicings multiple tonal shapes. The bridge system is comfortable, very well made. The guitar is light, comfortable, and can handle such a beautiful variety of genres and tones. Fretboard is like BUTTERRRRR when you bend notes. It’s addicting. And I love the aesthetic of the hollow birds. If you’re thinking about getting one just do it.JG
Sound: Sound quality is excellent. Every position is useable and Musical to my and my wife’s ears. I can only relate to vintage strat tones from recordings. The cleans are excellent to my ear as is heavily distorted tones. Very good. Features: I had no real expectations as I researched this guitar thoroughly. I use all the pick-ups combinations but I always have on a s-style guitar, but these are as good and “consistent “ across each pickup. I have spent too much time on this exposition about my Silver Sky. The best way for me to describe the guitar is I love to play it and when I am not playing it , I’m thinking about playing it. First off, I've been a bit of a Fender fanboy for a long time. Like many people, I have often scoffed at the idea of paying ultra-lux money for a copy of a strat. But this past weekend I went to my local GC to play the Fiore and, MCCarty and some CU24s, some more Fenders and even a couple of Les Pauls. After two hours in the room, I came home with an Orion Green SS. I just simply could not stop playing it. So comfortable to hold and play, once my hand adjusted to the neck shape. But the tone immediately grabs you as being full and round, bright enough, and not nearly as overly-harsh as my Am Pro2 can be. Build quality and finish was excellent, and this thing was so fresh that buffing compound is still coming to the surface after playing. Fantastic guitar that probably won't make me sell off my Fenders, but definitely inspires and excites me to play. So happy I finally got one.Jason

Picked up a 2019, same exact model about a month ago. Quality and build is superb, the carved top has even more flame than I expected. I wanted an "understated" look, and it's perfect. Flame changes with light. The nitro finish is buffed like new, unlike the VOS models, and the natural dye on the back and neck is rich and deep. Instrument is plek'd, action and intonation are flawless. The CustomBucker pickups are all the rage, you can only get them on a new instrument, and are supposed to be the best PAF repro so far. I'm still trying to decide if I like them, my ears say that the 60s have more natural midrange than 59s, but I can eq it out on my amps. They also seem to be unpotted. I'm really inspired by the sound and feel of the '60 LP, the looks and quality are just icing.Ron
I have been a Sweetwater customer for longer than I remember, and one feature I have always loved is the pics and weights of the actual guitars so you know what you're getting. So, I found a 60s Faded LP with a ridiculously low weight of 8 lbs, 2oz. The top looked nice, not anything crazy, which is fine but the one feature I love about the top is the mineral streaks (flecking) in the top. The streaks really add character. I was less into a fancy top than a light weight, good playability and great sound. And I was not disappointed. My rep, a fine young man named Jacob Terhune, expedited the shipping, and I had it in my hands literally the next day. Opening up the new case, and smelling that wonderful new Gibson smell is something I've always loved. The case candy was all there and speaking of the case, It was made by TKL just like back in the day and that is super awesome! My guitar is light as stated, and the satin finish is very well done, feels super smooth and I like that the back is natural with nicely matched grain. I did my usual setup and going through my LP and I think the quality on my LP was top notch. There were no file marks on the board, no scratches and every aspect of the build was great. The 61R/T pickup combo is great, I did have to adjust the pole pieces (which I do for every guitar), and just sat there making small adjust meats and I'm so pleased with the sound. The setup from the factory and the inspection from Sweetwater were fine, but as always I tweak it here and there. I did lower the nut slots only .003 of an inch, since I like the action at the first fret at .020". The fingerboard was a little dry, but much better than my 2020 Flying V board, but I hydrated it just a bit more. As far as sound, this LP is outstanding. It's very loud and projects sound well when you strum it unplugged and the entire guitar vibrates so much that it'll tickle your hands as you play. This guitar just feels alive, and it make me want to play, and if I'm not playing it, I love to just look at it. I guess I'm simping for my guitar, and I'm good with that. I see many people on Youtube run down Gibsons quality, but I have to disagree based on mine. My LP is outstanding and I would highly recommend one of these with no hesitation.
Going on a two-month report. The pickups are the strong suit of this guitar. They are like telecaster single coils but on steroids! They have a low-end snappy output on the neck pickup, excellent for jazz, blues, hard rock & metal. Mid-range is very stable in the middle position i.e. funk, rock, and pop. Also, the bridge pickup is what people strive for in an LP i.e. metal, classic rock, & hard blues. It has That classic overdriven PAF tone. It's worth spending the $$$. The quality is genuine and the slight VOS aging is a nice touch. The relic is not overly done but has a slightly played look. Tuners are superb, metal components are aged, & the lacquer is just right. Indian fretboard looks like ebony and the trapezoid inlays are aged just perfectly. Also, the case is beautiful along with the awesome case candy. Overall, this is worth every dollar. It's surprisingly a very versatile guitar!
