Ok first, the EVH 5150 IIIs Stealth in either 50 or 100 watt versions, is pretty much the holy grail of amps. Just an awesome sounding amp. And the EVH line of products will never let you down. The EVH line of products is Eddie’s legacy that he left for us. When you consider the quality and performance of all the EVH gear along with extraordinarily reasonable prices you just know that Eddie, in the last decade of his life wanted to share the things of his art with his fans and all aspiring guitarists, of all ages and income levels. Secondly, AMS just impresses me because of their wide selection and the fact that there has been things I’ve been trying to buy for months that every other music supplier doesn’t have and can’t get for months to come. The EVH amp is one of those things. Every other supplier is backordered or preorder only with no guarantees of when your order will be in. AMS had everything I was looking for and more. I absolutely love this amp.. I think it even blows the 100w stealth out of the water(I have that too btw). The tonal variation of this thing make it one of the most versatile amps I’ve ever played. Heavy distortion like you’ve never heard, but also amazing clarity. I haven’t been this excited about a piece of gear I bought in a long long time. There's lots of meat packed into the 5150-III Stealth's chassis, for sure! This may be "only" a 50W head, but it outweighs a couple of 100W heads I have. With selectable impedance (4/8/16), one can drive their choice of cabinets, or two, with its parallel outputs. NO problem pushing a full 4×12 cab to xmax (and Tinnitus). So is this the "5150 Sound?" I couldn't say, having never plugged into a legacy model. But taken at face value for what it is, this amp is definitely unique amongst others I own. Its "Green" channel being the least aggressive, is NOT a "Clean" channel, per se – but CAN run clean (and very dry). Sharing bi-level controls with Orange channel, gives one options. I suppose. But not really… Blue channel is what this amp's all about IMO, and I'm glad it gets it's own set of dials. I doubt I'll ever run this thing NOT on Blue channel. Twist the Gain & Volume knobs each past 40% – that sound is worth the price of admission! It's a seriously BEEF piece of hardware! Without taking it apart, the 5150-III 6L6 Stealth looks and feels to have a solid build quality. It's input / output tubes are cleanly displayed behind front & rear grilles. Again, there is an impedance switch, and parallel speaker jacks out back; along with a bias test point / adjustment. Weirdly, the Presence dial, Power and Standby switches are also out back. I really wish the Standby switch, at least, wasn't – this being my only qualm.Jay

Great way to get the 5150/6505 style on a budget. Amp tones are usable as is but, I really love hitting the front end with a BOSS SD1 as a boost. Adding 10 band eq into effects loop shapes the tone even more. Sounds great through Celestion V30 and GT75 2×12. 1/4 power switch helps for home volume levels, but I still use a reactive load attenuator.Dave

Dude !! This thing is extremely loud. I play through a 100 watt Marshall TSL100 and this 80 watt head blows it away as far as power goes..I couldn't get it past 4 without it hurting my ears seriously. I returned it because of that reason. It is a very large head too..pretty good sound though and easy to use. You want loud…get this head if not get the combo but you better have a good back !Mike

WAY TOO LOUD for home use..this amp just screams loudness. You will not sound like Eddie using this amp. it is very big and did I say LOUD !? at full power I couldn't get it past 4 playing through my Marshall with VIN30s – 4×12 cabinet. for the money a good LOUD amp a bit sterile sounding playing clean..It went back though so you can decide yourself…oh it has tons of GAIN too…TONS !! almost too much reallyMike

This amp runs the gamut from standard clean to pushed clean to crunchy to fully saturated forever sustain. The distortion is fabulous. Responds nicely to volume knob changes and picking dynamics. It has a voicing that is familiar yet its own. The clean tone is also very usable so it can be the workhorse amp that does it all. The effects loop is great. The reverb is OK. It is loud. Even at ten watts you won't get past three on the volume dial to maintain bedroom / apartment levels. Bought it on a Sunday afternoon, played all afternoon and all night. Called in sick Monday morning and played all day. It's a keeper…Matt

Absolulty love this combo and have no complaints on sound what so ever. The only down side to this combo is it has NO HEADPHONE jack unlike the 50w version. Other than that Great.Peter

Sound: The EVH 5150 Iconic Combo sounds great. In my opinion, it does what it sets out to do. You can't go into it expecting it to be one of the Stealth Models – it's not that. It is a very straightforward and easy to use amplifier, and it will do pretty much whatever you need it to do. Features: It's versatility, and the built in noise gate and boost. All high gain amps should have a noise gate built into it in today's day and age. Ease of Use: It was super easy to get a great sound out of the the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo. I started with everything (except reverb and gate) set to noon, and plugged in and let her rip. I have to do a bit more tweaking with the clean channel, but this thing REALLY shines with the overdrive on. To me (much like the original 5150 from the 90s) that is where money is. The red channel is pretty good too. By itself, the red channel sits between the green channel with overdrive on and the red channel with burn – and tbh I prefer it with the burn button off. Cranking the gain will take away some of your playing dynamics, and on both channels I found that setting it between 11 and 1 'o clock was sufficient. Quality: The amp appears to be solidly built (I've only had it for four days, so time will tell) It's quite heavy, and looks good. The footswitch was quite a bit smaller than expected, but seems like it's ruggedly built with a long cable. Value: I think the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo is a great value for the price range it sits in. It would have been better at the $799 price, but hey – inflation is what it is. The Wow Factor: I mean, it's a 5150 – you are going to get what you pay for. I wish the overdrive on the green channel could be kicked on with a footswitch. Overall: I really enjoy this amp. It sounds much better than what I expected, and it's very straight forward to use. The Hotone Freeze B is good on replicating the "Friedman" amp on a cheap budget for musicians to experiment on different tones. Better on budget than paying near $4000 or it's mini head amp $300. Over all, it's good to have to use and switch other head mini amps instead of owning the real deal. Way too much $. For a 5 watt amp, it's gets loud and that's good for practice or even on small parties.wino-1061

I'm primarily a bass player but also play guitar. All of my guitar amps are low wattage tube amps from under 1 watt up to 15 watts. I got into the Nano amps as they had some abilities I wanted such as effects loops, headphone outs, aux in and ability to run on batteries. Yes. These come with 19v power supplies. I tried them with a standard 9v supply and while there was a reduction in clean headroom, I actually found the overdrive/distortion tones more natural. After establishing that they worked at lower voltages, I made a 9.6 battery pack using Eneloops. This way, I can use it in bed (or anywhere) into headphones. It'll power a speaker cab but I use the power supply for that unless I want to play outside. This is my 4th and final amp from the Nano series. My 1st and favorite remains the Mojo Diamond for its Fender tones. It even sounds great with bass. I actually prefer it to my Thunder Bass. If you're only going to get one, that would get my vote. Then use pedals for other tones. I also have the British Invasion for the VOX tones. I wanted to round things out with something like a Marshall. The Purple Wind seemed the obvious choice but I wanted something a little different. This is supposed to sound like a Friedman which is Marshall-like. It's got a nice bite. It also has a nice clean tone with the gain turned down. Due to the higher gain, this is noisier than the others as expected when not touching strings or bridge. I wish they sold these and the power supply separately. Seems silly to buy 4 power supplies when I only need 1. To be honest, at full price, I would have passed but Sam Ash has these at a great price I could not refuse.Steven

This is an amazing amp. It sounds just like an Engl & the eq section really boost or cuts the freqs. For it only being 5 watts I was really surprised with the power & tone. It sounds as good as a 50 watt amp &this little thing can be used for shows running directly to the mixing console especially with an in ear monitor system. I have a few Hotone products & there all solid built & sound great. Well worth the money.properaddiction

I love this amp. Takes a few to warm up the tubes but after they warm up there is power for days it just has a great clean channel and the crunch is just so nice. You have independent resonance on each channel. And channel 3 just has a great lead sound. Then that effect loop is amazing no need to worry about turning on effects and hearing the effects kick in you just change the effect then hit the loops and it is there it also has the ability to change tubes but I love the el34s.Mark,C

Sound: My first one (made in 2016) sounded (and looked) amazing.. (also built like a tank). The new one.. not so much. Personally, I think the "green" channel could do without the Gain knob. Just let it be a Clean channel. The "Blue" channel has "almost enough" gain, while the "Red" channel's gain seems unusable once the knob passes 6 (tops). The gain structures should be compensated (preferably the same amount) on those two channels. The "Prescence" knobs should just be on/off "Bright" switches (I couldn't hear any difference between 0-8, then from 8-10 it gets slightly brighter). Adding anything to the effects loop adds a loud and low-pitched hum, on top of the unbearable hiss that's always present (even with a noise gate, which should be built into the amp anyway, and even with the volume at 1!). Features: Since I never got a replacement, I can only judge by the one I just returned.. The closest thing I can compare the "5150III-100S" to is the Egnater "Armageddon". It looks like the perfect "hard rock/metal" amp (on paper), but once it's turned on (esp. the Red channel), you WILL be disappointed.. (but, at least the Armageddon had a built-in, footswitchable, "Decimator G-String" noise gate). Ease of Use: If you did a side by side comparison between one made in 2016, and one made in 2021, I'm sure most people would notice the older ones sound better, and have much less "hiss", esp. with anything in the loop. Quality: Compared to my first one, the new one looked, felt, and even sounded, well, cheaper. I don't think this would've been an issue if Eddie was still alive. Value: The one I got in 2017, definitely.Now? Not at all.. At least not the 100 watt heads. Manufacturer Support: Every time I talked to someone at Fender, I got a different story, esp. when they were on backorder. At one point I was told they were discontinued ("They're called 'Limited Edition' for a reason.") before finding out they were shipping new amps out a couple months later. The Wow Factor: They still look cool, especially with red LEDs installed (DIY), but it doesn't make up for the shortcuts taken to rush them out to the public (plus the hiss, the hum, the seemingly microphonic tubes, etc.). Who knows? Maybe I'm just one of the few (well, quite a few..) people that got a sub par head that just slipped out the door unbeknownst to Fender's QC, and if zZounds sent a replacement (50 or 100 watts) that sounded more like the original batch, or perhaps better, this review would be completely different, and I'd go right back to buying damn near everything from zZounds. Overall: I bought my first one in early 2017. As much as I loved it, I didn't realize it's full potential until a couple years later, when I put my MXR EQ in the loop (alongside my Decimator II). Unfortunately, I had to sell it…fast. After saving back up to replace it, followed by a long wait (they were on backorder), I finally got another one.. from the new batch. Just a few problems….The price went up, but the quality went down.. a lot. Different tubes and components, the tolex coming unglued on the inside, loose (and uneven) pots, and a loud hum/"buzz" on all channels, but esp. the red channel, even with an ISP Decimator II in the effects loop, and the gain below 4 (I expect some "hiss" out of any high gain amp, so I've always used a gate in the front of the amp, and in the loop). It was NOT the same amp I once had. They completely rushed making the new ones, and skipped QC. (It probably didn't help that FedEx handled it, considering all the holes, etc. all over the box). I returned it, but not without being punished by zZounds, which sucks because they were my "go-to" site for amps and pedals for years. If you HAVE to get an EVH amp, just get a 50 watt head (or buy a used 100 watt made between 2016-2017) from Reverb.Joey

I've had this amp for about a week and I can already say it's the greatest amp I've ever heard. The green channel gives you some beautiful clean tones if you keep the gain low. The blue channel is great for classic rock and 80s metal. The red channel is insane, it gives you more distortion than you'll ever need! No need for an overdrive or boost. The controls are very simple, there's nothing complicated about this amp. Just plug in and rock!Rick

Fender-esque tube amp. As it comes from the factory, the clean channel is borderline unusable, it is overdriven. An easy fix is replacing the 1st preamp tube with a less gainy 5751. I put a NOS GE JAN 5751 in mine. (70x gain vs. the original 100x). That yielded a very usable clean channel for me. The factory speaker is a bit harsh sounding, I swapped it out for a Jensen. It comes with a spring reverb, check if it is screwed down properly, they have a tendency to be loose and rattling. The spring reverb also has a tendency to feed back and howl. at certain settings, I have not figured out why it does that, perhaps it needs some acoustical isolation from the cabinet. That is still work in progress. You have to mess with the settings to get it to howl, does not always do it. I never noticed it, but at one time I was trying to sell it and the guitar store found the setting and demoed it to me. With the 3 changes I mentioned (tube swap, speaker swap, reverb tighten) it is a charming tube amp, sounds pretty loud for the 30 watts it has. 2 negatives: it is heavy, built like a tank, and the howling spring reverb. Do not be afraid to get a modded one, esp if someone swapped the speaker already. People usually do not ask for extra money for that, and this is something you likely end up doing anyway.code_slinger

My Classic 30 and related Delta Blues are both US built models so I'm unclear on whether the amps have changed since production moved to China. That said, the Classic 30 replaced my very nice Fender Hot Rod Deville that had been modified to reduce gain and improve the tone stack. The Peavey has a wide range of tones and can produce excellent sound at both lower and high level volumes. The pre/post channel produces a very useful range of overdrive. Finally the amp is an excellent weight and size in terms of portability. The Deville was very nice but still liked to be loud, the Classic 30 is comfortable loud or at home volumes.TomH

I have bought and sold several amps over the past few years, and I think this one's the keeper. It reminds me a bit of the katana 50 in that it has lots of features – but it is far easier to figure out how to use. I wish it had a slightly smaller footprint, for portability's sake, but the sound and usability make up for it. I also wish manufacturers would provide more useful documentation, but there are lots of helpful videos on the web. From clean, to crunch, to filthy – and some Fender Vibratone if you like – this amp can do just about anything.CR

Sound: Its odd they make you choose a rating for manufacturer support seeing as I imaging you would only contact them if you had an issue with your new item and zZounds didn't resolve it Overall: Its way louder than I expected. We don't turn it up past 3. The distortion sounds great. The amp modules sound great. For metal and grunge which my daughter plays its fantastic. I used the acoustic channel for jazz ukulele and it sounds great as well.James

I work at a guitar store so we recently got these amps in, I have to say that it genuinely shocked me? For the price and for what you get, it's pretty darn good
I'm really picky with my amps, so much so that I've only had one amp my whole 5+ years of playing and seeiing this new amp really, made me wanna get one, don't think of it as a legit replacer to a real 6405 or a XXX Head and Cab, think of it as a beginner amp, something to get started one, yes it has a lot of knobs and buttons that may seem intimidating, but take some time to get to know the little beast? You're gonna be kicking fun with this thing for hours.
It has some pretty alright effects besides the amp itself, the only thing I will say is that when passing 4-5 on a distorted amp like the 6505 it rumbles, and not in a good way as well as the whole amp kit app, IOS only? That's a bummer

This is a fun little amp that offers a variety of tones at whatever volume you need. 20 watts in an all-tube amp is more than enough volume to keep up with a drummer and gig. With built power attenuation that lets you switch between 20, 5, or even 1 watt, you can practice at low volume at home (or no volume with headphones), and still achieve a rich tube tone. Rhythm channel: Acts as both a "clean" and "crunch" channel. Fender Twin Reverb cleans are out of reach, but still surprisingly lush and useable. Turn up the pre-gain to add a beautiful smooth break-up. Bright switch available, and I'll note that it's useable, and doesn't turn your tone into an ice pick. Toggle the crunch mode on (or switch on with the included foot switch) to add another level of drive and a bit more compression. There's quite a bit of gain on tap here, enough for classic rock of any variety, even 80's/90's hard rock, grunge, alternative. This would be a complete, excellent amp with only the rhythm channel. But there's more…. Lead channel: This is why you buy the amp. Hot, searing lead tone designed by Eddie Van Halen himself (Peavey 6505 = Peavey 5150 with a different name). Used by rockers and metal-heads alike for decades now, this ultra high gain tone is iconic. Plenty of bass for chugging palm-muted riffs a la Metallica or [insert heavy metal band name], but don't worry, shredders, lead lines maintain remarkable clarity and character. Shared EQ across both channels; not an issue for me, and you can always get an EQ pedal. Effects loop, options for recording via USB, headphones out (no auxiliary out for your MP3 player). Bottom line: This amp offers a lot of options, and it does an impressive job at each. I LOVE the built in attenuation for late night jam sessions while still having the volume and power for full band settings. I carefully researched and listened to dozens of YouTube demos before buying, recommend you do the same. If it's your cup of tea, buy with confidence!Slashaholic Anonymous

Bought used, had the pots cleaned to get rid of some crackling. I love this amp but I will say, the standard overdrive does suck if you aren't using any boosts or pedals. I really recommend an eq and tube screamer pedal with this. I had no problems with feedback, just weak gain and needed just a push on the overdrive punch. Love the presence and resonance, its also nice having reverb. I have the 100 watt of this amp too and the pedal is NOT cross compatible sadly. Clean channel could be cleaner, a little on the muddied sound, like a jazz pick up trying on crunch overdrive. Definitely play through 12 inch speakers, tens don't give you full bass capacity,even with eq boosts. All in all, amp is built well and adaptable if you have your sound dialed in outside of your standard amp controls, i.e.- pedals/compressor, etc. Through just standard amp distortion on overdrive, at most you get an ac/dc amount of over drive/distortion.jeffro records

The amp sounds phenomenal. You have to hear it in person to appreciate it. When you dig into the guitar you not only get a gritty, gain-heavy sonic assault, you can feel the amps power hit you in the gut. It has a very nice controllable compression that still enough headroom to feel when you play. Peavey amplifiers are frequently regarded as "high gain" amplifiers and this amplifier is definitely one of them. It's light in weight, yet powerful enough for practice and gigging. Pair it with a 4×12 cabinet with some Celestions and there are few could find fault with your sound or volume. It's got several tone-shaping controls, including presence, resonence, a bright boot and a separate gain-boost on the crunch channel. The amplifier is smart about it's electronics, and gives you tube status via LEDs above the power and stand-by switch. The amp has a nice feature set including cabinet-less recording out, a USB interface, variable power output (20 watt, 5 watt, and 1 watt). It has an XLR out for recording. The amp doesn't support 4 ohm speakers, only 8 ohm & 16 ohm. Ergonomics: I'm used to gain first, by the input jack, followed by tone, followed by main power amplification (loudness). Not this amp. First are some tone-conntrol functions mixed together with gain, then more tone control, then loudness, then reverb, then more tone control. I don't know why all the tone control was grouped together, but it wasn't. The labels for the knob are below them, so unless the amp is almost at eye level you can't read them. The speaker ohm setting, something presumably you wouldn't need to swtich often, is handled by a big, ready to be flipped toggle-switch. The power/power soak function, something you may actually flip back and forth in a given evening, is an uninvited plastic slide switch. Peavey got these switches backwards. Then there's some obtuse buttons that control things like XLR wiring and if a cabinet is selected. The ergonomics are weird. I like the amp A LOT, though.Salvador

Bought this for my grandson to use. My other amps are too big for him to take to lessons and school. This isn't the cheapest practice amp but the sound is great and the overdrive DSP is as good as much more expensive amps. Excellent amp for the money.digital_photog

Got the 6L6 5150 Black Stealth last fall…it is incredible but there was something about this EL34 after watching several demos and deciding it needed to be home with its 6L6 Brother. The EL34 cleans are crystal like and pristine! Channel 2 has that grit, warmth, clarity yet buttery rock goodness! Channel 3 is excellent to round out and take the lead. This amp has been great in inspiration, performance and recording. It was more than I hoped for even with the positive reviews and demos. It is easy to dial in a sweet tone. In fact, I have done so blindly and it just makes each note resonate and stand out. I have it running through a JCM 1960 A cab. Together, they RAWK! Another awesome thing about this amp is the headphone jack for late night practice and you can get sweet tones without shaking the house unlike other amps of this nature. The green (clean) channel on this amp through the 2×12 cabinet is absolutely incredibly. Expressive, responsive, articulate, and full of character. I recently tried out a Divided by 13 LDW amp and was blown away by the clean tone. I had always considered myself a Fender/6V6 person until that point. That amp was already sold, was twice the price, and is impossible to come across. This amp is the only one I could find that has both the EL34s and 12AX7s, and has that same unique clean tone that's somewhere between a Marshall and Fender in all the right ways. I could do without the red channel entirely, and would prefer to have separate eq controls for the green and blue channels, but easy enough to compensate with a tone knob.Faisal

This is a really neat little amp that has more than enough gain to be usable for modern metal tones right out of the box. To get it sounding exactly how I want, I needed to put an overdrive/boost into the front (Boss SD1 sounds great to me), and use a noisegate. I couldn't find these local and I mounted the amp right next to the stereo. The thing was I didn't want a 2 to 6 ft cord hanging out that I was gonna have to hide so these little Rca jacks did the trick and they work perfect. No wires to hide!josepbusto0

This amp is built for the performing rock musician. It's all about gain and rock tones. Oh want some clean, just back off your guitar's volume knob in channel one and hit the reverb button on the foot switch and you got clean ! The build is one of the best I have seen in my 50 years of playing and building amps and electronics. Anything Ed builds is the best. The new stacked pots to control the first two channel's gain and volume is a real help. The 2×12 combo also provides free weight training as you move from job to job and an added health benefit often overlooked. Ya it's heavy cause it's built so well. If you dare go to channel 3 then better fasten your seat belt but C3 can be easily tamed by turning down the gain. In my music room I set the power level to 1 watt and can still drive and countersink a 16 common nail. Great amp and I love the ivory color.Doc Montana

best pure rock metal amp ive heard/played. just incredible gain that really holds together well. this amp just roars. tons of headroom. you will never be drown out by a heavy handed drummer with this. tried a marshall jvm and this thing blows that out of the water. power attenuator works great. clean sound not as good as say a fender twin but it is pretty good. i play mostly classic rock and blues and got this to indulge my occasional 80s metal itch but it is more versatile than i thought. only reason i gave 4 stars is ch1 and ch 2 shared eq. fyi this is BIG. heavy as heck but wheels make it a bit easier. other than that its greatthe cheese

Overall: This is an old-school tube amp that has the best gain I've ever heard. It is incredibly loud, with all the balls a stack would have, and because of the Celestians, it sounds classic and gorgeous. But wait! It has a power leveler dial so you can sound like a stack at ONE WATT! Pretty cool.You should probably (definitely) grab a noise gate as well. Seriously, you turn this thing on and it sounds like my folk's old Zenith floor model TV lol…but the sound of that gain is worth the hassle of a little noise.I'm currently playing in a country/rock/southern rock band and cut my teeth on classic rock and 80's metal…this amp will handle all with ease.The best amp I've ever owned.RIP EddieDavid
