I've been performing and recording electric bass for 50 years and this bass is my 1st 5 string bass. But it is my 2nd MM stingray, my other being a 4 string from the 80's that sounds great, plays great, but is very heavy. Up until recently I've avoided extended range basses as a traditional style "fender 4 bassist" but I've also acknowledged the advantage to having a low B string when working w/ keyboardists so I finally took the plunge, and am I glad I did. It's taken me the better part of a month of not playing anything else to begin to get used to this new string configuration but it's happening and I'm enjoying the process. So, about the bass; I pulled the trigger when I saw the advertised weight of 8.2 pounds, for a 5 string?!?!?! When I weighed it at home on my hanging digital scale it was 8.16. WOW. The new stingray special really is something special, 1) it's light 2) it's incredibly stable, I tune it about 1x a week and I practice every day, 3) the NECK! the new gunstock oil/wax finish is the best feeling neck I've ever played, the radius is perfect for it, and the maple board is nothing less than a racetrack. I've got one other bass who's neck I appreciate this much , a 1965 pre-cbs L series precision. 5) all of the aluminum hardware works perfectly and is gorgeous 6) it arrived w/ perfect fretwork and a perfectly cut nut. I ply w/ low action and this bass holds it; very minimal relief and 5/64" clearance at 17th fret on the B string. This stingray special is tight!
I recently purchased this bass (smoked chrome single H) and I couldn't be happier. The bass looks better in person than online! Besides the looks, the bass weight is balanced (no neck dive) and light. This is my third Musicman purchase and I will say the setup wasn't great with any of them. I don't mind that since I will change out the strings and adjust them to my own liking anyways. I added EB cobalt flats to mine and love the tone I'm getting from it. Be warned! This bass punches through the mix! I played it recently at my church and I was asked to dial back the volume because it was to much for the mix. I don't mind that because it's better than not having enough power and it was a simple fix! The neck feels amazing, better than the satin finish on my fender P and J basses. I had a choice between this bass and a Fender Elite precision and the difference was in the feel and weight. They both sounded great but the low weight and feel of the neck did it for me. You won't get that from a picture/description online! If you're on the fence about getting one try it out at your local GC like I did. I have no regrets with this bass, it's craftsmanship at its finest.Adam
I have always avoided a Music Man because of the price tag. I decided to trade in two of my top line Schecter basses for this and I DON'T regret my decision. This Stingray has perfect balance, perfect tone, and perfect set up right out of the box. My bandmates love the deep growl of the low end and the clear highs on the upper end. The HH set up allows me to get all the various tones I need for my Alternative music band. I get the punch I need for my RHCP, Green Day, Blink 182 songs along with my deep tones needed for my Foo Fighters, Weezer, Muse, Killers, Toadies and all my other songs. My Schecter basses were great but were not this versatile. I will never go back to middle of the road basses now that I have been stung by the Stingray!Bean

Love this thing! I had a problem with the sound on the first one but Musicians Friend got me all straightened out. The midrange sound was really quiet while the highs and lows were loud. They sent me a new one and took the return on the bad one. The replacement sounds great! I had a setup and new strings done by my local music shop and she sounds amazing. Intonation is now spot on. I love the look and feel of this one with all the rounded edges. Love the sound. She has a snarl in the low end that I haven't heard with any other company. I also own a squire 60s classic vibe p bass but i think i like the sound of this one better. My only complaint is that she's a little heavier than my Squire otherwise im super happy with this purchase. Thank you Musicians Friend for the smooth return and your amazing customer service. Love the sound of this heavy, neck diving beast. There's lots of tone to play with using the 5-way pickup selector. If played light enough you can avoid the fret buzz, of which is hard to get rid of with truss and saddle adjustments, but that can be said of a heavy hand on most guitars in general. The neck dive is severe like all the weight is really just the neck, but I don't notice it much when playing. It's just something to keep in mind if you play standing and lift both hands off the guitar to quickly adjust a mic or amp knob settings. The finish is kind of satin, as if it were printed on with an ink jet printer. It leaves the soft wood body pretty vulnerable to slow moving collisions against sharp corners. The Pre-Black Friday sale price on this guitar is a STEAL though! Definitely worth it for a Music Man bass sound for recording, or gigging if your willing to put up with the minor issues of weight and neck dive.Zach

While my classic stingray 5 was away for modifications, I wanted another bass to keep me going. When I purchased this bass the first thing I did was go from stainless steel to nickel round wound; then I used the lightest gauge available.(25-45-65-85-105,because my hands are not that large) The nickel strings along with the rosewood fret board gave that bass the perfect contrast in tone as apposed to the stainless steel strings on the maple neck. I have gone from an Ibanez BTB 5 string, to a Fender American Dimension Bass V, to a Fender American Standard P Bass V, to a Fender American Pro Jazz Bass V, to this beautiful bass. I'm not a huge fan of 5 string bass, but it's required for my band, so I've been buying and selling trying to find "THE ONE". Now, I've played many many 5 strings but there's always something, maybe 1 thing I hate about them all… clunky, way too heavy, neck finish is too thick, hard to reach the upper register, etc…. THIS BASS HAS NONE OF THOSE PROBLEMS Contoured edges, fully contoured heel for easy access to the upper register of notes and in fact has 22 frets instead of 21, the roasted maple neck is one of the best feeling necks I've ever played, and Erie Ball this year reduced the overall weight by completely redesigning the hardware in aluminum. Who does that?! I'll tell you: a company who listens to the players. On a strap, has no neck dive, overall balance is amazing. The only thing I'm getting used to from other basses is the Active Pickup (it's been about 6 years since I've used them). The only Con I can come up with is the G string is very close to the edge of the neck, making pull-offs fall over the side. Something I'll have to adjust as far as my playing technique goes, but worth it for this bass. Overall: Amazing. If you were on the fence about buying one…. BUY IT.Taylor

Overall: The neck is smooth and plays great, only downside is that this thing neck dives since it’s a heavy neck. The HH configuration with a 5 way selector provides a variety of great tones giving you the ability to play whatever style of music. Also the 3 band EQ also adds more flavor of tone presence depending on your preference. Gig bag provided has a sturdy exterior, but a thick velvety plush interior knowing you’re bass will be secured. Overall it’s a great affordable bass that’s very close to a US stingray. Don’t be fooled by the branding on the headstock cause it doesn’t say EBMM, it’s solid and can walk the walk.Matthew
Took quite a bit of time tinkering to find the sound, made a shim for the neck pocket, and had to unstick the truss rod for adjustment. A couple days of tinkering and perfecting and we are off! Bona fide ebmm tones, complete with nasally sound to cut. I am content. Plenty of tone on the low B, too. One star knocked off for some quality control issues like some scratches on the headstock, and some nicks on the back of the neck from the luthier tools it seems.River

Love this thing! I had a problem with the sound on the first one but Musicians Friend got me all straightened out. The midrange sound was really quiet while the highs and lows were loud. They sent me a new one and took the return on the bad one. The replacement sounds great! I had a setup and new strings done by my local music shop and she sounds amazing. Intonation is now spot on. I love the look and feel of this one with all the rounded edges. Love the sound. She has a snarl in the low end that I haven't heard with any other company. I also own a squire 60s classic vibe p bass but i think i like the sound of this one better. My only complaint is that she's a little heavier than my Squire otherwise im super happy with this purchase. Thank you Musicians Friend for the smooth return and your amazing customer service. Love the sound of this heavy, neck diving beast. There's lots of tone to play with using the 5-way pickup selector. If played light enough you can avoid the fret buzz, of which is hard to get rid of with truss and saddle adjustments, but that can be said of a heavy hand on most guitars in general. The neck dive is severe like all the weight is really just the neck, but I don't notice it much when playing. It's just something to keep in mind if you play standing and lift both hands off the guitar to quickly adjust a mic or amp knob settings. The finish is kind of satin, as if it were printed on with an ink jet printer. It leaves the soft wood body pretty vulnerable to slow moving collisions against sharp corners. The Pre-Black Friday sale price on this guitar is a STEAL though! Definitely worth it for a Music Man bass sound for recording, or gigging if your willing to put up with the minor issues of weight and neck dive.Zach

I've had my bass since July and really can't say enough good things about it. I'm a luthier, so I did a full setup and bone nut upgrade right out of the box. Very little was needed in the setup, and it played perfectly fine out of the box. But after a setup it feels like a dream. I didn't even upgrade any of the electronics like I'd planned. It just feels and sounds so good as it is. Neck is wonderful, tuners are solid, bridge has not lost intonation at all since I first set it up. I really can't recommend this bass enough. I have a few pieces of gear I take everywhere with me for unexpected jam sessions, and this is the bass I keep on me. My guitars vary, but this bass is always in my lineup.Jason
The best bass on the market for the price. The neck is nice and solid and you can tell they hand picked the wood. The red finish is beautiful with no blemishes. The only complaint they installed the pots on top of the pickguard plastic so you'll have to unscrew the pots and output jack to get it all out. It has the OLP type bridge and the saddles move around so putting tiny pieces of foam rubber in between stops them from knocking together. The bass needed a total setup including pickup height. The pickups are loud and clear and the electronics are dead quiet. The preamp is surface mounts with polymer capacitors and they use the TL071 opamp. The B string doesn't flop around. These are great basses to mod. I replaced preamp with a Bartolini 2 band and added toggle switches for more pickup selections.BassDude

Ibanez knocked it out of the park with this one. I purchased one of these a little over 3 years ago in Roadster Orange and still have it. In it's price range I think this is the best bass you can get. I've had much more expensive (Modulus FB5 Flea) basses and much cheaper. This is a well balanced bass and you get ALOT of higher end features for your money with it. I have been in love with the fat, boosted sound of Ibanez Soundgear basses since I started playing as a teenager. And the feel is amazing. No sharp fret edges, great action. Highly recommended if you are looking for a bass in this price range. I tried the Sterling Sub 5 and absolutely hated it. It's garbage compared to these.TW
Jumping from a heavy 4 string Epiphone to this beauty was an awesome experience! It's narrow and comfortable neck is a highlight, I found string spacing not to be a prob. Sound is also great and it has a beautiful rounded shape. I have been using it actively for 3 yrs to now and have to say, it's light weight is definitely one of my favorite features, additionally tuning is very very stable, requiring only small adjustments if weather changes. On the other hand, I had some problems with electronics, some re-welding was needed, battery replacement ain't easy, an snap-on lid would be preferable, but that`s it. With more pros than cons (price included), this bass is a very good choice, it won't disappoint you.Skybss
I have very expensive basses and everything in between . I don't want to take those expensive heavy basses everywhere. This bass replaced a MIM Fender Precision bass. I could not have been more pleased with the performance of this bass. The first thing I did was take it to my guitar guy and have it setup to my liking (as always). It was set up fairly good Straight Out of the Box. This is now the bass that I use when I play at Disney. Construction is awesome but what really surprised me is the sound is every much a Fender precision or even that of a beefy jazz. More versatile than my MIM Fender precision was. The bass is light so after playing all day I don't feel like I've been carrying bricks around my shoulders. The action is exceptionally smooth. I think this is a great intermediate bass for anyone – 5 or 4 strings it doesn't matter. I have seen where some people don't like the bass boost feature. Always question what they're using the base for. If you play a lot of death metal then this may not be the best choice for you. But if you're like most of us playing anything from Jazz to R&B and pop on a regular basis this is an excellent choice for you. There are a lot of choices in this price range. However, the quality of this instrument's Construction outshines most of them in my opinionTank

The yamaha trbx305 is a very versatile bass guitar that's suitable for all genres of music. including metal. it has a mahogany body and a set of ceramic pick-ups which can provide warm, beefy, punchy sounds. it also has a smooth low action so it's comfortable to play. the one unique feature on this bass is the 5-way tone switch. this switch has eq settings for all styles of playing. so rather if you play finger-style or play with a pick, the tone switch has a sound selection for any playing technique. I play metal and I personally dig this bass for it's warm punchy sounds. rather if I play live or record music, it fills up the band mix quite well. it also works well with the effects I use. not to mention it sounds killer with overdrive and distortion effects. I'm not quite sure what trbx stands for, but judging from it's incredible sound quality, I'm guessing that trbx stands for totally radical bass xtreme! \m/ lol anywho, if you play metal and wanted to try something a little different, this is a good bass to check out.Metal alex
Rec'd it new in the box from Sam Ash. Candy Apple Red looks very nice. I didn't get as lucky as some in that the set up was not very good. I mean, it plays really easy, but fret buzz all over the neck which comes through the amp. Too low I guess. It didn't want to "keep" the battery in without some fumbling around. Stayed in once the lid was closed. There is a small cut on the side of the fretboard, but doesn't look like an issue. Sounds pretty good in this price range. Played an Ibanez 655 which smoked it in every way, but just out of the price range at this time (near twice the price). So, new strings and 65 bucks for a set up and I think this will be fine for awhile. In this price range I am not dissapointed. It is what I expected except for hoping I could get away without having to have it set up for just a bit. Actually, in this price range, it really is the best I have seen.Chuck

But it is my 2nd MM stingray, my other being a 4 string from the 80's that sounds great, plays great, but is very heavy. It's taken me the better part of a month of not playing anything else to begin to get used to this new string configuration but it's happening and I'm enjoying the process. So, about the bass; I pulled the trigger when I saw the advertised weight of 8.2 pounds, for a 5 string?!?!?! When I weighed it at home on my hanging digital scale it was 8.16. WOW. The new stingray special really is something special, 1) it's light 2) it's incredibly stable, I tune it about 1x a week and I practice every day, 3) the NECK! the new gunstock oil/wax finish is the best feeling neck I've ever played, the radius is perfect for it, and the maple board is nothing less than a racetrack. I've got one other bass who's neck I appreciate this much , a 1965 pre-cbs L series precision. 5) all of the aluminum hardware works perfectly and is gorgeous 6) it arrived w/ perfect fretwork and a perfectly cut nut. I ply w/ low action and this bass holds it; very minimal relief and 5/64" clearance at 17th fret on the B string. This stingray special is tight!

I get the punch I need for my RHCP, Green Day, Blink 182 songs along with my deep tones needed for my Foo Fighters, Weezer, Muse, Killers, Toadies and all my other songs. My Schecter basses were great but were not this versatile. I will never go back to middle of the road basses now that I have been stung by the Stingray!Bean

I have always avoided a Music Man because of the price tag. I decided to trade in two of my top line Schecter basses for this and I DON'T regret my decision. This Stingray has perfect balance, perfect tone, and perfect set up right out of the box. My bandmates love the deep growl of the low end and the clear highs on the upper end. The HH set up allows me to get all the various tones I need for my Alternative music band. I get the punch I need for my RHCP, Green Day, Blink 182 songs along with my deep tones needed for my Foo Fighters, Weezer, Muse, Killers, Toadies and all my other songs. My Schecter basses were great but were not this versatile. I will never go back to middle of the road basses now that I have been stung by the Stingray!Bean

This guitar came ready to play right out of the box. If it weren't for the 3 day trip from Indianapolis to Ohio, It would of probably been in tune out of the box. The instrument was packaged well. While un-wrapping the case from the 2 boxes it was packaged in I had no doubts that the instrument would be okay. The guitar itself is a beautiful piece of art and beautifully set up. Clean and Neat. The guitar plays like butter and is easy to play. I am a music student going to school for music performance in jazz studies and this guitar matches all the requirements I had for a guitar. I have other instruments besides this one, but I wanted a work horse guitar that I would not be afraid to carry on my back everyday. NO FRET BUZZ on any strings! I have been to the Galloup school of guitar repair and building for the journey man program and I felt no need to try and tweek this guitar in any way, other than the pick up height on the neck pick up. That pick up was set oddly low. I would like to commend the person and peoples at music man for a nicely done job on getting their instruments ready to go out of the shop and Musicians Friend for the great customer service and fa-nominal job on packaging and shipping. My guitar arrived ready to play. I almost didn’t even have to tune it. workmanship was superb no fret sprout, rough edges, string buzz etc. The pickups are great as is and you can dial up any sound you want easily. Neck is smooth as silk no issues. The guitar exceeded all of my expectations. it’s hard to put down once you begin to play it. Hard shell case is great very solid and beautiful inside with lots of room for stuff! I own over 138 guitars this is one of the absolute best of my high end models. Quality and attention to detail is the name of the game with Music Man. Acoustically the guitar is resonant and had a clear tone. Plugged in the low output pickups let the tone shine. It has body you’d expect from humbuckers but with a clarity that was very surprising. Fret work is flawless and the natural feeling neck is fast and smooth. Plus the flame on the neck and fretboard is incredible. It has more flame and depth than many big brand body tops I’ve seen. I’d say the neck is on the smaller side of medium but super comfortable. I've been performing and recording electric bass for 50 years and this bass is my 1st 5 string bass. But it is my 2nd MM stingray, my other being a 4 string from the 80's that sounds great, plays great, but is very heavy. Up until recently I've avoided extended range basses as a traditional style "fender 4 bassist" but I've also acknowledged the advantage to having a low B string when working w/ keyboardists so I finally took the plunge, and am I glad I did. It's taken me the better part of a month of not playing anything else to begin to get used to this new string configuration but it's happening and I'm enjoying the process. So, about the bass; I pulled the trigger when I saw the advertised weight of 8.2 pounds, for a 5 string?!?!?! When I weighed it at home on my hanging digital scale it was 8.16. WOW. The new stingray special really is something special, 1) it's light 2) it's incredibly stable, I tune it about 1x a week and I practice every day, 3) the NECK! the new gunstock oil/wax finish is the best feeling neck I've ever played, the radius is perfect for it, and the maple board is nothing less than a racetrack. I've got one other bass who's neck I appreciate this much , a 1965 pre-cbs L series precision. 5) all of the aluminum hardware works perfectly and is gorgeous 6) it arrived w/ perfect fretwork and a perfectly cut nut. I ply w/ low action and this bass holds it; very minimal relief and 5/64" clearance at 17th fret on the B string. This stingray special is tight!
I recently purchased this bass (smoked chrome single H) and I couldn't be happier. The bass looks better in person than online! Besides the looks, the bass weight is balanced (no neck dive) and light. This is my third Musicman purchase and I will say the setup wasn't great with any of them. I don't mind that since I will change out the strings and adjust them to my own liking anyways. I added EB cobalt flats to mine and love the tone I'm getting from it. Be warned! This bass punches through the mix! I played it recently at my church and I was asked to dial back the volume because it was to much for the mix. I don't mind that because it's better than not having enough power and it was a simple fix! The neck feels amazing, better than the satin finish on my fender P and J basses. I had a choice between this bass and a Fender Elite precision and the difference was in the feel and weight. They both sounded great but the low weight and feel of the neck did it for me. You won't get that from a picture/description online! If you're on the fence about getting one try it out at your local GC like I did. The materials are good. Fit and finish are good. Sound is good – I can get the P bass sound I was after in a 5 string. The fretwork is ok – for the price. Probably could use a good polishing. No hig frets or fret ends sticking out. The action on mine was high and the intonation was off. I lowered the strings a bit and adjusted the intonation. If you can't do this yourself, you will most likely need to have the tech at the store do it. Most Maple neck guitars in this price range shrink a tiny bit in their first Minnesota winter from the dry air. This causes the "fret bloom". I most likely will heed to file and reshape the fret ends when this happens. For the price, it seems to be a solid value.Merle
I was very surprised when I received this instrument. It was packed well and thought I was receiving the same quality instrument that I have received from musicians friend in the past. This right out of the box was not set up properly and would not play since the pickups were not soldered properly or at all. Had to do a full set up on the instrument and solder the pickups to get it to play. Now it sounds like the other instruments I have always received from Musicians Friend. I know this is not an expensive unit but the quality from ibanez was terrible. I am really disappointed to say the least. I should have sent it back, but thought I could fix myself and no what I had ,rather than have another sent to me in the same way the 1st one was sent. Very disappointed!!!!starfire 64
Overall this is a very nice bass for the money. Mine was made in Indonesia. Quality and finish were very good. Setup was fine right out of the box. Hardware and electronics seem to be of good quality. You can get a lot of tonal variation as well. One minor complaint is the body is lightweight and the neck is heavy so be sure and buy a comfortable strap that won't slip.Steve

Just received this bass after great (as always) shipping and service, and I have to say the finish quality impressed me. I was worried about being able to reach around the wider neck, but it's so well shaped I have no trouble. Frets are well finished, no sharpness noticed. I think I will need to make a truss rod adjustment to get rid of some minor fret buzz, but I'm going to let it wait a day or two to see if it acclimates before I worry about it. This is my first Ibanez, and I am impressed at the level of detail provided in the instruction book. I may be changing out the strings but want to give the stock strings a try while I get used to this bass. Overall, it met my expectations, lives up to the photos, and makes me want to practice so I think it's money well spent.ToddPh
Let me go ahead and start with the negative part, which is minimal considering. I purchased this guitar based upon reviews and pricing to match a great product. There are 3 color options for this guitar and i chose the Charcoal Brown Burst. When the product came in it was no where close to what is shown online. I saw another finish in my local store and it is spot on from the image shown online. I think it was Natural Gray Burst. I ended up selling the first one i ordered after a couple of months and re-ordered another one and it came in different than the first one but i do like the finish better on this one. The fretboard even came in a different color tone on the newest one, which i like just fine, and the knobs are different than the first. Not sure where the consistency is on these or where they got the image for the Charcoal Brown Burst at. Other than that i have to say this is a really nice guitar. It has a smaller diameter neck which is easier to play and the power this thing has is amazing for the price. Lots of adjustment for tone and it looks really nice to boot. Ive only played a couple of years but a guy i know thats played for years in groups played it and was impressed with it. So that alone says something about it. The setup right out of the box is really close and only needs minor adjustments. I would have given 5 stars except for the finish issue. It plays good, sounds great and looks even better!Jamie
I've been familiar with Ibanez instruments for decades, and owned one in my college days. After an accident recovery and 20 years of not being able to play bass, I recently decided to take up playing again. I anticipated a low budget instrument, with all the normal flaws associated – but this surprised me. The body is lovely, and although not exceptionally weighty, it's heavy enough to give great tone and sustain. Frets are nicely inlaid, and free from chatter. In fact, aside from a very slight intonation adjustment on the G string, this instrument plays as well as some much more expensive bodies. The active bass boost is a bit of a gimmick, but tone is quite diverse and dynamic. Tone tends toward being very bright, but it easy to attenuate. All together satisfied.Ian
