The idea for this model began nearly 25 years ago when martin installed its first laser engraving machine, and boak began experimenting with various ways to utilise it. boak created an intricate pen and ink illustration of a complex floral design that was meant to be laser engraved into a tortoise pickguard, but the material proved unable to be safely engraved. fast-forward 23 years, boak came across his original illustration and thought it would make a beautiful piece if inlaid with pearl. he was right! working with bill seymour and jeremy chism at pearlworks, the trio modified the artwork to allow for the detailed pearl inlay work. the resulting prototype won the approval of chris martin iv, who asked boak to expand the design to the fingerboard and headstock. the model also features premium-grade east indian rosewood back and sides, with the highest grade of sitka spruce selected for the soundboard. scalloped forward-shifted x-bracing ensures the open projection for which martin guitars are prized. additional vintage-inspired appointments include antique white bindings; abalone inlay along the perimeter of the top, fingerboard extension, and rosette; a full gloss finish with top aging toner; and nickel open-gear tuning machines with butterbean knobs.

Calling all black crowes fans! martin is proud to bring you the rich robinson custom signature edition d-28. this model is a guitar player's dream, and it is the first model that martin has ever made as a visual and sonic representation of an artist's personal instrument. the instrument that served as its inspiration is a 1954 d-28 that was handed down from robinson's father, who played it on stage at the grand ole opry; as a traveling musician with the hillbilly highway; and in his folk band, the appalachians, during the 1950s and '60s. after inheriting his father's guitar, robinson used it to write most of the original black crowes' songs from the band's studio albums. this soulful representation of that beloved guitar is crafted with aged satin-finished east indian rosewood for the back and sides and an aged sitka spruce top that is finished with a very thin vintage gloss. it also features rearward-shifted non-scalloped bracing, which offers a very balanced tone and added volume. it includes some 1950s style vintage build characteristics, like martin's signature dovetail neck joint, authentic hide glue construction, an ebony fingerboard and bridge, and aged nickel tuners. another custom feature requested by robinson is a bridge with the wings slightly softened for comfort. the model includes a specially designed label signed by robinson and numbered in sequence.

This guitar is being sold as a project and will need some attention from a luthier. this guitar has a common crack from the rear edge of the bridge to the edge of the body, caused by low humidity levels. this will need to be repaired by a quality luthier. the binding along the upper bout on the front of the body seems to have been reglued; the binding is attached properly, but there are some resulting finish cracks along the binding that weren't touched up, and there is a bit of glue residue here and there along the repaired area. the binding around the rest of the guitar is still firmly attached. otherwise, this guitar has been played quite a bit and shows many examples of wear. there are light dents and dings over all surface of the body, the back of the neck, and all around the headstock. each side of the headstock has circular dents into the wood from many passes with a string winder that's laid against the headstock. the heel of the neck has one partially filled strap button hole, and the strap button has been relocated directly behind the original hole. the finish at a handful of spots around the corners of the body has worn through, and there are some spots that the lacquer has hazed up a bit over time. there are also some light scratches and scuffs over the instrument, some scratches on the pickguard and some tarnishing on the metal hardware. otherwise, this guitar is in solid structural condition with no other cracks or flaws aside from the noted crack in the top. with a little tlc, this will make a great player! fretwear this guitar seems to have had the frets dressed a handful of times, resulting in frets that are low and flat. the guitar is playable as-is, but may be a candidate for a refret in the future. action this guitar has medium low action and plays great, but may require a quick tweak to your liking. electronics n/a case non-original martin soft case included.
