I bought this bass 9 months ago and the quality hasn't changed a bit. I've played about 10 gigs with it, I love the look, the feel, and, most importantly, the sound. We play mostly pop punk and the active pickups really give you that meatier bass tone, especially when paired with the right pedal. I bought this bass open box, so there were a couple cosmetic differences (chips/cracks in the gloss), but the electronics work great. One thing I didn't realize is that active pickups require a 9 Volt battery, which I changed about 6 months in. There's a compartment in the back that unscrews and holds that bad boy in there, quick fix, easy peasy. If you're looking for a quality bass to play some rock, this is it. Bought this bass from open box inventory. Musicians Friend had good photos of damage/repairs and when I called with questions they were VERY honest and knowledgeable. After I got the neck adjusted and raised string height slightly to fit my style this is in my opinion a very good playing the bass. It has a thin neck that is smooth and fast playing. I have not had any issues with this bass going out of tune, even after playing pretty hard for hours at a time. Also I like that is somewhat less wide at the nut. Not quite like a jazz bass considerably smaller than my Rickenbacker. EMG pickups are nice and hot, I can get a huge range of tones. The only downside for me is there are no fret markers on the side of the neck. Small white dots would be nice for those of us who are still getting used to a fretless neck. All in all this was a great buy for the price.D minor
Having been a keyboard player all my life with a special appreciation 4 what the bass guitar can do, I decided to find a lefty 5-string and teach myself to play. Lefties are not plentiful, so I felt lucky to find this moderately priced model that has the quality and range of Active Electronics I wanted. It is solid and holds tune and plays easily I think. The neck is the heavy end of the guitar and I may look for a specialized strap to keep the neck up when my right hand is not on the neck. The 18 volt active knobs work as expected. The look of the guitar is very nice and I don't believe it looks plain, rather it is a finished natural Satin that frankly is in Vogue with the better players. All in all I'm perfectly satisfied with the quality of the choice I made. I'll be putting on a set of strings that allow smoother slides and doing a bit of jazz fusion as well as rock and old school R&B. I'm into the tones of Miller / Jaco / Tal / Clarke, etc.Stellan

Love this thing! I had a problem with the sound on the first one but Musicians Friend got me all straightened out. The midrange sound was really quiet while the highs and lows were loud. They sent me a new one and took the return on the bad one. The replacement sounds great! I had a setup and new strings done by my local music shop and she sounds amazing. Intonation is now spot on. I love the look and feel of this one with all the rounded edges. Love the sound. She has a snarl in the low end that I haven't heard with any other company. I also own a squire 60s classic vibe p bass but i think i like the sound of this one better. My only complaint is that she's a little heavier than my Squire otherwise im super happy with this purchase. Thank you Musicians Friend for the smooth return and your amazing customer service. Love the sound of this heavy, neck diving beast. There's lots of tone to play with using the 5-way pickup selector. If played light enough you can avoid the fret buzz, of which is hard to get rid of with truss and saddle adjustments, but that can be said of a heavy hand on most guitars in general. The neck dive is severe like all the weight is really just the neck, but I don't notice it much when playing. It's just something to keep in mind if you play standing and lift both hands off the guitar to quickly adjust a mic or amp knob settings. The finish is kind of satin, as if it were printed on with an ink jet printer. It leaves the soft wood body pretty vulnerable to slow moving collisions against sharp corners. The Pre-Black Friday sale price on this guitar is a STEAL though! Definitely worth it for a Music Man bass sound for recording, or gigging if your willing to put up with the minor issues of weight and neck dive.Zach

Sound: You can't go wrong on tone with the construction of this bass: maple/walnut neck through mahogany body, EMG pups, active pre. Right off the bat, you have good tone. The neck is fast and easy to play. This bass sounds more expensive than it actually is. Features: Well, a bass built in this fashion SHOULD feature a 35" scale, and this one does not. The 34" scale is fine for E-A-D-G, but the B is FLOPPY! There are some players that really like a loose B string, but I'm not one of those players. 🙂 All due respect, I like my strings nice and tight from one end to the other for optimal string response. Also, the bass only has a two band active pre, and for a bass constructed as this one is, I would expect to see a 3-band. I was highly disappointed when I discovered this… Ease of Use: NARROW STRING SPACING. I have big hands with long, chubby fingers. I play fingerstyle, and I need a little bit of room to dig in when I'm playing. I can see the narrower string spacing being great for pick players, or for people with small hands and skinny fingers. If you have large hands and fingers, though, you definitely want to play this bass BEFORE you buy it to make sure you can deal with the narrow spacing. Quality: The construction and quality control seemed top notch. The natural matte finish did not show any mistakes in the manufacturing of this product. The bass is well balanced, and it sounds great. Value: I would say the value is only average. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice bass, and it does sound good and play good. I'm rating value a "6" because of the disappointment of not having a few key elements that are typically desired with a bass built to this particular standard. There was only a 2-band EQ, not a 3-band with mid control. The string spacing is so narrow, the bass is practically unplayable for big guys like me. The 34" scale yields a floppy, flemsy low B, and that's no good for me. I like the bass, but I would not buy this bass because of these shortcomings. Manufacturer Support: I've never contacted Schector, so I don't know. The Wow Factor: read "Value" Overall: Traben, Spector, and other top manufacturers are having their basses imported from Asia just like Schector. These basses ARE well designed and well constructed, with good components. Schector simply missed it with this bass, in my opinion, because the competitors are building basses with better components and better design. This bass, for me, is slightly above average for basses in this price point. When I was shopping for my 5-string bass, I played this Schector, along with the Schector Stiletto Custom, Traben Chaos Obsession, Ibanez SR505, Fender American 5-string American Jazz, Warwick Corvette Standard (ash body), and others. Out of all the listed basses, I liked the Traben Choas Obsession the best because it is comparable to this bass, but has 35" scale, 3-band EQ, wide string spacing, and a really innovative bridge design. The Traben was right for me, and I know it was because I played every 5-string bass that I could get my hands on to make sure that it was. All that said, this bass is a nice bass that simply fell short FOR ME. This bass may be perfect for you. Play it and find out.

I've had this bass for about 6 or 7 years now and it has absolutely blown me away! I didn't play it much when I first got it bc of the weird transition from 4 to 5 strings but over time I've played it more and more. I love it more every time I play on it! I've used this thing for rock, alt metal , death metal, posthardcore bands, jazz bands, jamming with friends stangers in a bluesy way, I've recorded With it and made YouTube covers with it. It's suited more for rock metal punk abd subgenres but it's versatile. This thing will take thick strings if you want (135 B string), the dadario strings that came on it were great too. This thing has great low end roar but can also sing melodically I play a lot of chords/fragments and tremello with a weird playing style and this thing sounds great! It's my favorite bass, it's the best I've played although I haven't tried many abd my others are lower quality. I play guitar too but am mainly a bassist so I like how the strings sit a little closer together than on others or 4 strings. I've had guitarists ask me what I did to make this bass sound so great and they were blown away when I said nothing just took it out the box! I've only had to intoneate it once so far. It's set up was pretty great out of the box the strings were a bit higher off the neck than I was Used to but once I got used to the action I was glad they put it where it was. Only complaint is that the low b sometimes would make the low b harware rattle and I could feel it skake/vibrate the whole bass (it didn't come through amp or anything. This stopped over time and I think higher string gauges might have helped to smooth this out. Batteries for the active pickups seem to last for quiet awhile. I use this through a boss me50b with compression on and through a nice combo amp that can compete with stacks this bass roars through it. First off let me say I've been playing "P" bass for quite a while. My current model is 24 yrs old. Thought I'd shop around for a replacement. No gigging for me anymore. Last one was July 4, 1973. Then along came children. So now I just sit on the edge of the bed and play along with John Paul Jones. When I found this Schecter Omen Extreme -4, I was deciding between an SG standard, and the Fender Aerodyne. Then I picked up this one, simply because it is bezutiful to look at. What a suprise. The pan knob will switch you from a "P" bass to a "J" bass. Even though the Omen has a 34" scale it plays beautifully. I am not disappointed with this purchase. The shape hints at a Jazz bass which I like, hence the Aerodyne search. Never mind that, this plays sweertly. At this time GC us offering an %18 off sale. You just couldn't go wrong. I haven't been playing long. Bought my first bass in 2020 (Epiphone Thunderbird Goth). Started taking lessons online through BassBuzz (Josh is excellent!), after a few weeks of practicing for a minimum of 2 hours a day, I was able to start learning songs for our Praise Team at Church (we currently had no bassist). I'd take my Epiphone of course. I learned to play sitting down, now it's time to stand, my shoulder was killing me! 2nd week of playing at Church and my tone column failed! I took it to GC to get it fixed and spotted the Schecter hanging on the wall. I picked it up and couldn't believe the difference in the weight (again, I'm a novice), my salesperson explained the difference between active and passive and I knew then that I wanted an active guitar. The Epiphone took two uses of muscles for my left arm, one to hold the neck up and of course the other to go up and down the fretboard. This guitar is so balanced it will stay where you place it from the get go. GC gave me a fair trade on the Epiphone so I did the deal the next day. If you're a beginner or even an experienced player, this guitar can make a tremendous difference with ease and sound. Came ready to play out of the box. String action was a tad high but a little tweaking with a string gauge and trial/error brought things down to my comfort zone. I really like the ability to switch the pickups from single to dual-coil configurations. The difference is clear and use both settings a lot depending on the song/genre I am playing at the time. I've been playing DR Coated strings for the last year and I found the Ernie Ball strings that came on the bass quite comfortable and good sounding. The neck is very smooth and comfortable. It is wider than my ESP 4 string but narrower than some other 5 strings I've played. The ebony fingerboard is solid and I only have trouble accessing the last fret on the low strings. Overall quality is excellent and I am very happy with bass. You get a hell of a lot of bass for a great price.Raisin'Hell Again
Everything I wanted it to be. Wished I would have got a 5 string sooner. Neck seems wider but, you get used to it almost immediately. Super tones high and low. Very nice quality as I expected. My 1st Schector. Strings low no buzz out of box. Tuning keys are good so far time will tell. Stays in tune like a quality axe should. The Bass has everything I wanted. Tone-wise it is off the chart. Deep, well defined Low End all the way down the Low B, which is nice and tight. It packs beautiful highs as well. The EQ works great and give more tone shaping ability than most in much higher end basses. I like the push pull EMG's but they stay on Dual Coil most of the time. Still, what a powerful pickup. The bass has such a rich sound, that I feel like I can't do it justice. The sky is the limit for this thing. I feel like it can easily put to bed a lot of basses at twice the price. In the looks department, it has a sort of dark elegance that still impresses me everytime I open the case, 2 months after buying it. I fall more and more in love with this Bass. It shows me more and more evryday. Also, I had a question, and Schecter's support was great. I think if you play the Bass it will speak for itself. Anyone thinking of getting a Bass near this range, you may come to regret it if you don't look at this Bass. I own both a Rogue VB100 and an actual Hofner, so I can easily make the comparison. (I'm a collector, that's the only reason I even own a Hofner). First off, I'm going to risk getting flamed because I am of the belief that the Hofner is possibly the most overrated, overpriced bass you can buy. At almost $3000, it's ridiculously expensive and very limited in versatility. It's tonal pallet is basically the fat, tubby classic tones that we all associate with Paul McCartney. And that's exactly why they're so pricey today, because had he never played one, NOBODY would be playing Hofners today. And remember, he specifically purchased his Hofner back in the day because it was symmetrical AND he couldn't afford a Fender any the time (his words paraphrasing). So they were cheap comparatively to Fender. But not today. Fast forward to the Rogue. In various cover bands I've played in, I have been required to play Beatles songs, so you gotta have that tone and vibe. Took a chance on this little guy and was blown away. I like it better than my Hofner. It's a little heavier, but only in so far as it feels more solid, as the Hofner feels very light and fragile. (We're still talking about a very light bass in the Rogue). The neck, while thin, is still a bit wider and more comfortable to play than the Hofner too. The sunburst finish is OK, not nearly as pretty as the Hofner, but I'll gladly save $2700 to get 95% there in overall vibe. The pickups/tones are actually more powerful than the Hofner, and the low end clarity is better too. And the classic violin shape is still striking today. At this price, you can't afford not to get one to add to your sonic pallet. Happy thumpin!Peter
In the last ten years I have owned three Beatle basses; two Rogues and an Epi Viola. The first VB-100 was fantastic out of the box. A great natural tone that a conventional solid body bass cannot duplicate. To me, it's as close to an acoustic bass as you're ever going to get. The none day after a gig, it slipped off a chair that I had perched it on (I know) and the neck, being extremely delicate, cracked, plus the floating bridge was destroyed as well. I tried to have it fixed but to no avail. The mojo was gone. I sold it later and said never again because it was like owning a literal violin. The Epiphone was my second attempt, mostly because for certain types of music this bass really shines. The problem was we never hit it off. No vibe…nothing. Playing it gave me nothing as I had with the Rogue. So it went away and I swore up and down, NEVER AGAIN! Cue the third act. This spring I thought to myself that I yearned for that big, midrangey tone again. But what if I wasn't lucky enough to hit the jackpot? Oh well, life's short and this bass won't break the bank. A couple of weeks ago this beautiful vintage sunburst violin bass showed up at my door. It's darker than the horrid pics MF has on their website. Purchased a set of LaBella Beatle bass strings and spent a relaxing Sunday getting to know this bass. The factory that has been kicking out the Rogues all these years really has it down. Yeah, you can get a dud tone-wise, but your chances are probably less than you think. The thing is this bass plays and sounds better than the first one I had and way better than the Epi. The neck, while narrow, is as smooth as butter. String spacing is tight, but if you play it for a bit you'll get used to it. Through my Zoom B1ON, I can snare a double bass sound unlike ever before. The VB-100 has a knock on it that it's a one-trick pony. Not his one! Using the tone controls and both pickups, I can coax a number of tones out of it. You owe it to yourself to give it a try.Mike

This is the first bass I've ever purchased, I've only played (6 stringed) guitar in the past. This bass is an excellent value for money — it has a great look, and the sound is very good given the price point. The only issue I've experienced is that Rocksmith told me the volume on the instrument is quite low; however, this does not seem to prevent it from hearing the instrument, or being able to tune it correctly. Overall, if you're looking to get into bass for the first time, or moving over from guitar, but are not sure you want to drop $500-$1000 on a bass up front, I would certainly recommend this model. This is the fourth bass I've owned, and I am quite satisfied with it. My one complaint with it is that the pots are loose and don't have a center detente. But that's nothing that new pots and a soldering iron won't fix so I'm not bothered by it. I also bought it used; it could be a singularity but other people have had some trouble with the electronics. But this thing is passive and re soldering it is a walk in the park. I absolutely love the tone variety that I can get from this bass. With new strings on and on a bridge heavy tone you can coax out that signature Warwick growl using fingers or a pick; both sound good. It isn't a one trick pony though, if panned onto the neck you can get a nice fat sound that is sufficiently toned down but not so much so that you get lost in the mix. If you have both pickups at a similar level, you get a good balance of tone. I vastly prefer the placement of the pickups so you get a more ballsy sound than from something like my Schecter Stiletto. I also like that a tone knob is used instead of an onboard EQ- it's simpler but just as versatile especially when still figuring out the tone that you like. I put Power Slinkys on as soon as I got it and they work great. I play through a Hartke LH500 into a 1×15 cab, the only effects I use are a Xotic RC booster and an MxR comp. I love both, the comp is an always on pedal for me and the RC booster really brings this thing to life and gives it a little extra body and oomph so you really cut through the mix. I haven't tried this thing with distortion yet, so I can't speak to that if that's something you're looking into. This thing really can do just about anything; I played it in church and the sound guy loved it and I play hard rock/ metal tunes for fun at home and it rocks for both. Word of warning though, if you're used to covered pickups the open magnets may throw you if you're used to plucking pretty hard (guilty). Bottom line, if you want a versatile bass that tends toward an aggressive tone, buy this. Try and find one used, it's a much better deal. I don't know that I would've bought this at the new price. I would advise playing one in person first; I picked up a Warwick at a store a few years ago and didn't like it but then picked this one up recently in store and loved it. So it isn't for everyone. But for the price, the tones you get from this thing are real hard to beat, even if you buy new.Ajgriff
Overall: This is my second RockBass by Warwick. I must say, I’m even more impressed with this one than my last one. First, it looks even better in real life. The natural finish is what I prefer on instruments. Besides looking awesome, the lack of a lacquered finish means your wrist shouldn’t stick if you’re sweating. I mean the bass looks like a big chunk of wood with some strings and electronics, need I say more? The wood really gives this bass the distinctive tone that I personally love. Alder has a great brightness to it. This means I can really make this bass sing. Having that much natural high, even the EQ flat, means this bass is incredibly bright. Don’t get me wrong, the MEC pickups play a big role. A good allegory being “the wood is like the water, while the electronics are the coffee beans” or the other way around. Lastly it plays extremely slick. Warwick uses a 3D adjustable bridge, as well as having the adjustable nut. This allows the player basically every possible avenue to set this bass up perfectly. It may take some practice to get all the adjusting nuances down but it’s worth the practice. These RockBasses really are great. They fill the gap for people like me who are great players that haven’t met band mates yet thusly, don’t necessarily have the reason/means to get a $5,000 Thumb or Streamer. I love this bass, in just a month it has already become an extension of me. I can’t ask for more.Alex
Overall: okay i'm going to get this out of the way right now, QC needs to be stepped up on these quick. my tuning machines are loose (they are not only not tight on the headstock but the bolts that hold them in place are loose as well) nothing damaged just not tightened all the way, the neck pickup pot had a read bad crackle to it when using it, and for some reason there are ALOT of metal shavings stuck to my pickups. those out of the way i still ADORE this bass. i had an older 5 string jazz version and it sounded wonderful but was VERY neck heavy. this is not the case as the body is not really heavy but.. i'll say robust. there's no neck dive i find and the neck, frets, and body were flawless. it plays and feels like a dream.the reason i don't care or can write off the pot and pickups having metal on them so quickly is cause i had no intention of keeping the stock ones anyways. those are already switched out. i can say there's enough room to make this an active provided you don't plan on using an onboard preamp. in closing i guess i can say that i do feel they really need to step up (or wake up) on the QC, but after that it plays amazing, sounds amazing, and feels amazing. i've wanted this bass for some time and have no intention of ever losing it.Donald

Its a little by chance what you get from mex. fenders in terms of craftsmanship and details. Mine has a little dent and a little gap between neck and body but it is sturdy. Fret work is not like americans. Tone wise and playability is good. I like the look of pau ferro wood. Neck shape is comfy not like 70s baseball bat p bass more like 70s j bass. The orange color is the reason i pick this one, fender changing colors every two three years so if you have this color in mind go for it. Much much better in real than pictures. Overall, if you need a good practice/little jamming bass its a good alternative. Instead of squiers go for this. I have sire as well, if you dont like/need active preamp simple is the best. Also, this new pickups are good, have good bass and midrange not scooped like some american pickups. One final thing, I've tried couple of player series before ordering this, some of them is not well at all in build quality. So, it is a little surprise what you get, check after you buy it and then decide to keep it or not. Have fun..
Purchased the Fender Player Jazz bass. Overall great looks and sound, but some quality issues from the Fender Mexico factory (not Andertons' fault): – First bass had very clear weird uneven blemish under the varnish on the sunburst body. Not awful, but if I was in-store I would never have chosen that particular item. Returned and swapped by Andertons, no quibbles. Second bass arrived. Overall happy, sounds great, but still a few issues with quality control and design. – Control plate was missing 2 screws and was moving around – how does that get through Fender quality control? Replacement screws sent free of charge by Andertons. – Nut has not been slotted correctly – high G must have been passed through a machine and slipped, string is clearly a couple of mm too close to fretboard edge and you can see the failed first pass. Doesn't really affect playability, but is annoying and I will get it corrected at some point. Again, points to poor quality control. – Fretboard (Pau Ferro) is really thin – on the Player series, at least. Neck fret dot markers in white are half over the mid-dark fretboard, half over the light maple neck. Very hard to see in low light levels. OK, so they're just an indicator for position, but the design isn't great. So overall, the bass sounds great and Andertons service was very good. …and falls in love. Let me start by saying I actually have owned one other P-Bass. I had a 50s reissue Precision, but honestly the neck was just too thick for my liking after years of playing Jazz basses. Honestly, it felt thicker than the neck on my Yamaha 5-string. So, I picked this bass up after always dancing around getting what would be considered a more standard P-Bass. I have a 70s Jazz with a ton of modifications, I've had quite a few other brands of basses, but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I ordered this a few weeks ago, and have been very pleasantly surprised. The action was pretty good out of the box. I adjusted it a bit, made a few tiny tweaks to the intonation, and now it's super smooth. And, on the pickups, let me say it's a great sounding bass. Pickups are clear, bass sounds great. I play through a little Ampeg Micro cabinet. Earlier this week, I bought some Flats to throw on it (because that's what you do with a P-bass, right?) and now it's quickly becoming one of my favorite instruments to jam with. It really cuts through the mix when playing in a group. I see why folks really love the sound of a precision. My Jazz still has it's place, but man, I really like the sound of this bass. The Player P is a great value for what you get. I've never owned an older MIM, but I research the heck out of pretty much any purchase I make, and it looks like Fender really stepped it up with this rendition of their MIM Precision basses. Good tone out of the box, no discernible pickup noise, good action, a beautiful neck, and a Tidepool Blue finish that just shines and shines.Dennis F

Never played a hofner before so didnt know what to expect. The experience with PMT was good. came well packaged 10 out of 10 for them. The bass has nice neck no sharp frets and the ends seem to be dressed nicely. seems well set up and even arrived in tune and the electronics seem good and do what they are supposed to do. There are a couple of small blemishes in the paint but nothing to fret about, however it says its transparent black of which it kind of is on the back, if you catch the light right, so a bit disappointing on that part. The other disappointing thing (and i dont know if this is a thing with all Hofners ) is neck dive. One more thing that makes it look cheap is the quality of the Hofner Logo, it awful. overall though its a nice bass to add to the fleet for a bit of variety.Adrian W.
Absolutely gorgeous bass. The smaller scale is comfortable and easy to play. There is a slight buzz that sometimes occurs at the tailpiece, but does not affect the sound when plugged in. I am absolutely loving this bass. I am a guitar player who wanted a bass for recording. I had been using a Squier bass but wasn't satisified. It just didn't sound and feel like Fender Precision Basses I'd played in the past. Decided to pull the trigger on this, and am so glad I did. It is significantly heavier and just feels much more solid. The fingerboard is fabulous. The back of the neck is so smooth and comfortable to play. The frets are perfect. Hardware so much better overall. Tuners much more solid…less tuning issues. And the sound is exactly what I was going for. It sits in my mixes so much better than the Squier bass was. And it is beautiful on top of everything. Can't recommend this bass enough.William
I purchased the Dakota Red Vintera Precision bass because I have been looking for that vintage feel and sound without having to mortgage the house. I wish I could afford a true vintage '58 Precision Bass, but the Vintera does not leave me disappointed. The first thing you will notice is it's beefy neck. If you are looking for a slim modern neck, this isn't it. It is the vintage "C" style neck with a wider fretboard which feels really good to me IMO. The gold aluminum pick guard really stands out next to the red of the body. The craftsmanship and finish is excellent; no fret sprouts or blemishes in the finish. The electronics are excellent with no buzz or crackle and the pups definitely have that vintage sound, particularly when the tone is rolled all the way off; you can definitely channel your inner James Jamerson and Duck Dunn. If you roll the tone back up it nicely brightens things up. I did have my luthier complete a set-up on it and I did change the stock strings with La Bella flats to further provide that old school sound. If you are looking for a bright modern sound then you may want to check out the Vintera Jazz basses. I play the bass through a Fender Rumble which allows this bass to sound it's best. Lastly, the tuners do their job well and provide stable tuning. This is an excellent bass and I have no reservation with recommending it if you want the old school feel and sound. I've been a Precision Bass player since I started playing bass years ago. This is my first "real" Fender bass however, after playing several different Squier basses over the years. While Squier makes great instruments at a fair price point, this Vintera Precision is like a different world compared to my previous basses. You can feel the overall quality of the parts, the fit & finish, and the materials just by picking up the bass and playing around on it. I received it in the mail almost perfectly set up by Music Store. Only the action was too high for me, but that was an easy adjustment. The bass has a wide, not too thin neck profile that is not very deep. Super comfortable to play. The nut width is slightly larger than on other modern P-Basses which is nice if you like the extra space. I really like the way this forces you to play a little bit different compared to a narrower fretboard, like for example on a Jazz Bass. The difference compared to a regular P-Bass is pretty small. You just get a feeling of more space for fretting. The fretboard radius is also a bit smaller than on a modern P-Bass. This makes for a very balanced playing feel in my opinion. These differences are all nice touches and make for a slightly different playing feel, but don't make it any harder to play than a regular P-Bass. The sound is absolutely wonderful. The 50s-style pickups have a slightly compressed sound that sound great on its own, plugged directly into a DI box or an interface. I replaced the factory set of strings with .045-.105 LaBella flatwounds which is a perfect fit for this pass. The low-mids are greatly enhanced by putting a set of flats on this bass. It sits beautifully in the mix and is never weak or overpowering – always perfectly balanced. The fit and finish of this bass is great. I'm not one to go looking for faults in the paint or anything like that, but I absolutely have not spotted any quality control issues with my bass. The hardware is absolutely fine and does the job. You don't get a massive bridge or fancy hardware here, because everything is done to vintage specs. You can, of course, modify these parts later on, but I really don't think that's in the spirit of this vintage-focused instrument. If you want to put a more massive bridge on the bass and modify it in other ways, I would choose a Fender Player Series P-Bass instead which is a bit cheaper – you can spend the difference on your mod parts. The bass is surprisingly light. If you have back issues or generally dislike heavy instruments, I would definitely recommend this one! The lack of weight does not impact the sound quality at all. The only drawback is that, in some positions, it can have a little bit of neck dive, not to a point where it really becomes a problem, however. I always wear a strap even when sitting down, and that takes care of the very slight neck dive very easily. One thing to keep in mind is that the hardware, specifically the bridge and trussrod, are truly built to vintage spec. This means that the string height adjusters on the bridge do not have tiny hexagonal screws but small slotted screws instead. You will need a very small slotted screwdriver to access these screws. The trussrod can only be adjusted at the base of the neck which can be annoying. You need to remove the neck in order to adjust the trussrod. Here, again, there is no hexagonal screw but rather a large philipps screw to adjust. Small minus points for these features that could have been left out in favor of more modern solutions. I guess the placement and types of screws used make it more true to the vintage specs, but I would much prefer if they had just chosen the modern versions instead. Overall, this is a very beautiful and great-sounding bass that I can only recommend if you like P-Basses, vintage sound, and flatwounds. The build quality is fantastic and I have no doubt that this bass will stay in great shape for a long, long time.

I have been playing for over 50 years and have had many basses , over 60, now down to about 20. This bass I have had for three years and it is my no. 2 bass, The best way to review it is to compare it to my main bass, a Peavey Cirrus 5 Maple top. First of all, if you are talking value for the dolla, the Shecter can't be beat- ( Korea vs USA made Cirrus) . I love the fret markers offset on the Stilletto, the Cirrus doesn't have any, So with stage lighting, the Stiletto has an edge. The Peavey wins finish wise with real gold plated bridge and machines and a nicer glossy finish not counting the neck which I wet sand. The Peavey has a double truss rod and I am not sure on the Stiletto. The Stiletto finish is thin, but that doesn't bother me at all , I paid a third of the Peavey price and the Cirrus is a true high end bargain comparable to typical 1500 to 3500 dollar basses. American Cirrus are 900 to 1800 used. I find few players truly objective or even qualified to judge bass guitars. Most guys are creaming over their Fenders of Rickenbackers, or some version of a jazz with a bolt-on. Finally sound: the Peavey design pickups are better than the EMGs, but remember , I have not found or tried a better pickup at any price. With that being said , I love the EMGs . not fair comparing the radius topped Peaves to flat top anything. I have only been able to notice the difference over a year or so.
Over the years I have owned several bass guitars of varying quality and price range, some custom made and others hailed to be a top of the line model. This bass succeeds in playing, sounding and feeling like a top notch instrument. The electronics are very quiet, the neck feels natural for a 5 string and the weight is light comparatively speaking. The equalization offers a wide palette of tonal varieties and there has to be a sound to suit every bass player in this bass, even the most discerning. The low end is tight and expressive while the highs are clear and distinct. The Studio 5 is currently my favorite 5 string bass and I recommend this as a first choice instrument.denekawa
I bought this bass over 7 years ago and to this day I haven't felt the need to buy another bass. I've been on tour multiple times and played this thing all around the United States, and it has never let me down. Not even once. I run my own studio and about 70% of the bands that come in end up using this to record because it sounds better than almost every bass that a band might bring in. I've tuned it down to dropped F#, tuned it up to dropped B (B F# B E A) and it's handled everything, provided some modifications in string size. The only complaint I could possibly have with this gorgeous beast is that for whatever reason, if I rest my thumb on the neck pickup when it play (which is the most comfortable for me) it doesn't project very well on all the strings. It will project well on the lowest 2 or 3 strings, but not the D and G. I've changed the batteries, messed with the tone knobs, used compressors, nothing. No idea why it does this. If I rest my finger on the bridge pickup, then there's no problem, but it's not comfortable for me. If you play with a pick then this will not be an issue. One way or another this bass is the best investment I have ever made. I wouldn't be the person I am today had I not bought this instrument. You will not regret this purchase.B-REX

I have a Trans Amber Quilt Top and it's not only beautiful, it is fun to play! I took it camping with a little Flamma FA05 amp that can run off a small sine wave inverter that I have. That was so much fun. I have 5 guitars on a Hercules rack but the Steinberger sits next to my office desk where I can just grab it and plink away. It is so small and compact it doesn't interfere with my work stuff and it doesn't bump into things. It sounds great through my Orange amp and Boss ME80 when I want to kick things up. The people who moan about setup and the like need to spend a little time and learn how to tweak the setup which on the Spirit is really EZ to do. And once you dial it in, it stays in tune and properly setup for a long time. Got a little fret edge? Use a fret file and take it down. Done deal in 10 seconds. I have never understood peeps that don't want to maintain their equipment from start to finish. Oh well. The pickups are fine for ordinary purposes. The single coil is a bit high and maybe low output which can be annoying but I learned to live with it. You can always take it out or replace it. The humbuckers are solid and reliable. No complaints. The whammy bar is cool and can be locked. It stays in remarkably good tune due to the double ball ends. The little leg rest is all metal and has never given me a problem. I did have to tighten the cable jack nut a couple of times but that wasn't difficult to do. The quilt top is really quite good. i wish there were more of it but then the guitar wouldn't have the qualities that I bought it for… namely size and convenience. All in all it's worth every penny of the $400 they are asking.
I got the hotrod yellow. How often do you see a yellow guitar? I also have a $1600 bass and this sounds just as good! I had to do a complete setup which is unusual, adjust the truss rod,saddles,pickup height. It plays and sounds amazing now. Downsides are, you have to buy an adaptor(if you can find one) to use regular strings of your choice. The strap extender which made the bass sit right and more playable cannot be found and is no longer made. Lastly you need to buy a special stand which is also hard to find cause it wont fit on a standard one. I managed to buy the adaptor and the stand from Reverb. As always American musical delivers excellent service and has made many purchases become a reality with the payment system! I no longer shop at music stores all my buisness is done here! The crafstmanship is better then you would expect for the price point. The fit and finnish seems great no sharp edges. The gigbag has a larger pocket and seems a little better quality then the one I got with my GT-Pro years ago. I would recommend a hardshell if you play out a lot with this.Scott G.

I also tried the Strandberg Boden, but although it was lighter than this I could not justify the huge amount of money and didn't feel it was worth it. So I went with this, the original headless! (or version of) For the money, you can't fault it – I am very happy and play it all the time. So in many ways it deserves 5 stars. There are some bits I don't love though: The volume knob is so close to the strings I knock it a lot. If you are a very precise player this won't be an issue, but if you're going at it Cobain style you will. For the size, it could be lighter. It is still considerably lighter than a "normal" guitar though. The pickups are not great. However, I knew this going in, and with the guitar being so affordable and pickups being the easiest component to replace, this is what I plan on doing. The middle pickup is too close to the strings – I hit it a lot. Again, fixable. The neck profile gets weirdly thinner the closer you get to fret 1. I use this guitar for metal, so I don't mind, but I can't play chords on it, for that I need some girth! I want to end on a high, so here are the things I really like! General playability – it plays really well! A joy. Fretwork – top notch. Tremolo system – Why do more guitars not have the knob at the back to adjust the spring tension? It is fantastic. As is the quick way to lock it off. I've not had a floating trem in years because of the hassle, this is much better. Flip out leg rest – just what you need for seated playing. I've been playing guitar for many years. Dealing with the pandemic isolation, I decided to teach myself bass guitar. I have had standard scale basses in the past but never warmed up to them. I tried a short scale and, viola, I now enjoy the instrument. Guild has been making quality products for ages and this bass continues the tradition. I'm glad to have it in my guitar family. Superb joinery, finish and fretwork. I find this bass to be very comfortable to play and especially like the neck width (narrow) and profile. Don't understand why it ships with round wound strings, because this bass cries out for flats! I put some Chromes on mine almost as soon as I got it. Do take note that many short-scale string sets are too short for this bass because even though it is, in fact, a short scale, medium-scale string sets generally fit it better due to the greater distance between the "harp" tailpiece's saddles and ball end attachment points (when compared to, say, many Fender bass bridges). The individually height-adjustability of the pickup pole pieces is nice for dialing in even string-to-string response. On many other basses, this procedure is more a matter of "splitting the difference", since it involves raising or lowering the entire pickup. In response to another reviewer's comment about limited tones: I have found that to whatever extent this may apply due to the single pickup configuration and passive circuitry, the tonal palette of this instrument can easily be expanded with careful amp selection, an outboard pre-amp and/or various pedals (not that it can't stand on it's own, unsupplemented). I run mine through 2 amps simultaneously (isolating the signals with a Lehle AB/Y pedal): adding very mild gain/distortion to one output with a Darkglass pedal and leaving the other clean to maintain fullness of the lower freqs. If you're wondering about the ergonomics, the body is almost exactly the same size as that of a Gibson ES-335. If mine got stolen or destroyed, I would immediately buy another one. I've tried several other basses since buying a Starfire, and always wind up going back to them: they just look, sound and feels "right". I also have a Starfire II, but don't like the Starfire I any less on account of that and don't plan on getting rid of either one. This bass was intended to complete my small collection of bass guitars. I had considered other semi hollow body instruments such as Epiphone and Fender. However, I'm not a fan of anything made in China or Indonesia but I have owned Korean crafted instruments in the past and I can say I've never had a complaint about them whatsoever. This Guild Starfire is a very comfortable short scale bass. The neck is narrow at the nut, similar to a jazz bass, and the string spacing is not too tight for me. The sound is very familiar to anyone who follows the early days of 1960's psychedelic rock bands, Jefferson Airplane. or The Byrd are two great examples. But this Starfire definitely holds its own in any country or western music genre band. My own band mates complimented and love the sound it produces. It's definitely enough as a single pickup model, but there is also a two pickup model also available. But I prefer the original look, feel and sound of this single pickup Starfire bass.Taino Ti

At the price, it's impossible to beat. The tuners and the bridge are better than I expected. Electronics work nicely, usable strings for a burn-in period. It needed less than 10 minutes to tune, adjust and intonate. The neck is unfinished, I'm going to seal it with tung oil and lightly scuff it with some steel wool. I'm already assuming the frets will have some high/low spots. Surprisingly, the fret ends are dressed nicely. I see people have complained about cutting their fretting hand on sharp fret edges. Not the case here but necks do shrink a tiny amount depending on climate and that shouldn't really be a valid complaint. It's easy to fix fret ends and at this price I would expect to do it. No pick guard so the patched area near the pickups can be seen if you look close enough. As I'll be putting in a pick guard eventually, it's no big deal. I did buy it as slightly scratched so that's it for the "issues". In short, I'm happy. It's also a fair bit lighter at the body than I expected. I don't see that as a bad thing.kfries-half
For a guitar player getting into the world of the bass guitar this was almost too good to pass up. After a simple bridge adjustment and raising the pickups a tad this is a really functional bass to learn on. Sounds good, no fret buzz (outside of my poor playing). Pots work OK – really impressed for around $50!! It is lighter than higher quality bass guitars, but so far so good! Thanks!!velofan
