Great intermediate acoustic. Thinner, lightweight body that makes it very comfortable. Neck design more like an electric with rolled fingerboard edges and smooth frets. Cutaway enables a surprising amount of high end fret access. Piezo amplifier is really deep and rich sounding. Colours and design features convey nice 1950s vibe: well made and very good finish. This Fender guitar is awesome. Out of the box it is almost perfectly set up. The intonation is off just by a little bit and only with 2 or 3 strings. The sound seems a little washed while playing chords, but single notes are loud and clear. All the frets have edge treatment, nice and smooth. The synthetic bone used for the nut and bridge are way better than plastic, allowing for a long sustain. The guitar could use better tuning keys, but the guitar stays in tune good enough. Over all my guitar was built well, and I'm glad it sounds good, too. I would recommend this guitar for all beginner guitar players because of the sound quality, and anyone else who don't have the money for their dream guitar.Tim
The pick guard is just a cheap adhesive sticker thingy and it was already damaged and peeling off when I opened the box. Not a great first impression. But I chose to take it off completely and thankfully, the glossy finish that's all over the body of this guitar is also underneath the pick guard, so it doesn't look too bad at all and I can always replace it if I want to. The "champagne" color looks champagne in the right light, but appears khaki or even greenish the rest of the time. I do love the shape though. It's smaller, lighter, and sleeker than most guitars I've handled, awesome for a more petite person like me. I'm 5 feet tall and 90lbs, so a lot of guitars have been too bulky and awkward for me. In that respect, the Newporter has made me a better player since you naturally do better when you're more comfortable. I also love the neck/head with the electric style shape and inline strings. I like the strings it came with a lot. It didn't come properly tuned, but that was a quick fix, especially since the tuner works so nicely. The sound is surprisingly rich. Great volume, especially with a pick. Overall, it's a really nice option at a really nice price, I just wish the quality control was better. Getting a new instrument with peeling parts is really disappointing, feels like I got it used or something 🙁 but if you're lucky and get a unit that is perfectly intact, you'll love this rich, beautiful, comfortable guitar. But if you can afford to spend about double, then I would suggest you do that so you won't be gambling with the quality as much.Trudy G

I have a number of acoustic type guitars – both steel and nylon strung. When playing these I rarely strum – it's a finger style combination of rock, flamenco, folk, blues and jazz ( a real mixture). The first thing I did was to change the strings (D'Addario Silk & Steel). As a result this little Fender beauty has turned into an excellent parlour guitar: it's responsive, lovely to play and remarkably loud for its size. Build quality is good and the sound projects well. If you're a chord strummer, I wouldn't suggest that the Sonoran is for you – but it responds superbly to finger style playing. It's subtle and responsive. For the money, it's very, very good. And of course, it's very, very easy to lug around. Love it!Gillian B.
Pretty nice sounding instrument! Way less money than most solid wood, small bodied shorter scale guitars, & stacks up decently against “higher end” offerings. As a traditionalist, the onboard electronics were an annoying detraction, but in practice the pickup system sounds far more natural than I was expecting. And as a couch/practice guitar, having a tuner on the instrument is handy, I’ll grudgingly admit. If I were the type to plug in an acoustic on stage, I’d get good use out of these features. There are a few other general things that caught my attention, listed in no particular order. The dynamic range is an interesting departure from typical full scale acoustics. It’s quieter when finger picked softly, but as loud or louder when dug into with a pick. Definitely doesn’t sound small when played with authority, & generally has great resonance. I’ve yet to try lighter strings, but with 12 gauge phosphor bronze, it doesn’t feel too slinky or incredibly different than a longer scale length acoustic. I do find it a tad more comfortable, but not a night & day difference. The only lesser aspect is mostly down to the stock setup. Action was a little on the high side, & the G# fret under the low E string was a little high, so G chords buzzed on that string. This doesn’t detract from my over all impression, as I’m imagining most folks buying a decent instrument will end up setting it up & leveling fretwork to taste. All in all, mine’s a very nice acoustic guitar by any measure, & its sound punches way above its weight class in terms of cost. I dig it.WJJ

Nice guitar for the price. Quality is ok, nothing wrong but it doesn't have the wow factor, or maybe it is the black color. Guitar design looked great, small form. For the price this guitar is pretty great. I was shocked at how easy to play it was right from the box. The action was low enough that I expected it to buzz and it didn't. Needed only slight truss adjustment after it settled. Neck feels more like an electric than most acoustics, but has frets smaller than I would have liked (definitely not medium jumbo as on a standard strat). Sounds richer than I expected for price. Missing some low end. You don't feel this in your body like some other (nicer) dreadnoughts. The highs and mids sound nice though – doesn't sound cheap or anemic. I bought this on sale to keep at the office, but it hasn't left the house yet because I'm having too much fun playing it. Other reviews have stated that this becomes a "go to" guitar because of its feel and that's been my experience too. This would be perfect for a beginner because of the price and ease of play. Only defect is that the pickguard is lifting off of the body. Seems like it wasn't pressed on all the way. After pressing it solidly to the body it seems to be staying put. Got this on sale and for that price, it is a great guitar. Well made. The saddle was quite high, so that needed a little sanding, and the nut needed a couple of slots cut a little deeper, but still, that's not uncommon certainly at this price point. Otherwise it sets up well. Nice rosewood fretboard. The neck is fairly hefty, so while it may look strat-like, it is beefier than an electric. Sound is solid, even and not too bright. It should improve with age due to the solid top. For $ I might shop other brands, or even something better used, but at the blowout price the guitar can't be beat.STEPHEN

This guitar is really quite awesome! I purchased it at sale price in January which made it a bit more affordable. Construction is top notch and love the satin finish! The action was a bit too high but thanks to the adjustable neck angle it came down to my liking!! Then there is the sound! It does an amazing job duplicating the broad array of acoustic instruments, then 2 electric sounds as well! The only con is that it is quite expensive and maybe not for everyone! The New Mexican player series just recently released is certainly more affordable although not as many sounds because of only a 3 way switch rather than 5 on the American built models! All in all I'm really very pleased with this purchase and the assistance I received from Sam Ash associates at the store! This is my 4th purchase from them! Five star service, much more friendly than some rival stores I have done business with! I highly recommend this product and Sam Ash! Will continue to do business with them!!Guru
I purchased my Fender American Acoustasonic Telecaster in Black in June 2019. I absolutely love that the guitar is lightweight and easy to play. The 5-way blade switch and Mode & Volume knobs are well placed and easy to work. At live gigs, the guitar sounds great through an acoustic amp or through a mixer. I would have preferred to have a glossy black finish over the entire body instead of the matte finish on the top cap and natural finish on the sides and back. My issues with the guitar start with having to replace the on-board battery after only 8 months. Fortunately the battery replacement was fully covered by the warranty. Also, the fret edges are not at all smooth; and the 1st string, or high E, easily pops out of the nut with any vigorous picking or strumming. Even with those issues, Love this guitar and I would recommend it highly! I have received many compliments from fellow musicians and audience members on the looks and sound of the guitar.Tom
Pluses: its lightweight and seems well made. Cons: Didnt like the neck shape but thats just me. Acoustic sounds are decent but of course not as good as even my $300 Epiphone. The electric sounds are cheesy; might work running both acoustic and electric guitar amps…. Seems for someone who already owns everything. Better yet, get a mag soundhole pickup with dual cable. Or just run your acoustic into a small multifx pedal (eg.Zoom) for when you want to get "electric-y" (patch= pre eq–>overdrive—>compression–>post eq). Done.Go_Pats

I bought this guitar as an impulse buy. The natural, flame top really caught my eye. Strummed a few chords and bought it on the spot. The smaller, concert style body has a slightly thinner, trebly tone, which I really like. It's very comfortable to play, neck feels great. I record with it often and am very happy with the tone. It has a built in tuner, which is a nice addition. The built in pickup is ok, but I prefer to mic it up when I record with it. Mi only complaint is the tuning machines are kind of junky. They aren't very smooth. But when you finally get it tuned, it stays. Overall, I really like it. Like I said, it was an impulse buy. I have 12 other Electrics, acoustics, and basses, and this little acoustic is one of my favorites!Mike

If you're a chord strummer, I wouldn't suggest that the Sonoran is for you – but it responds superbly to finger style playing. It's subtle and responsive. For the money, it's very, very good. Pretty nice sounding instrument! Way less money than most solid wood, small bodied shorter scale guitars, & stacks up decently against “higher end” offerings. As a traditionalist, the onboard electronics were an annoying detraction, but in practice the pickup system sounds far more natural than I was expecting. And as a couch/practice guitar, having a tuner on the instrument is handy, I’ll grudgingly admit. If I were the type to plug in an acoustic on stage, I’d get good use out of these features. There are a few other general things that caught my attention, listed in no particular order. The dynamic range is an interesting departure from typical full scale acoustics. It’s quieter when finger picked softly, but as loud or louder when dug into with a pick. Definitely doesn’t sound small when played with authority, & generally has great resonance. I’ve yet to try lighter strings, but with 12 gauge phosphor bronze, it doesn’t feel too slinky or incredibly different than a longer scale length acoustic. I do find it a tad more comfortable, but not a night & day difference. The only lesser aspect is mostly down to the stock setup. Action was a little on the high side, & the G# fret under the low E string was a little high, so G chords buzzed on that string. This doesn’t detract from my over all impression, as I’m imagining most folks buying a decent instrument will end up setting it up & leveling fretwork to taste. All in all, mine’s a very nice acoustic guitar by any measure, & its sound punches way above its weight class in terms of cost. I dig it.WJJ
This Fender guitar is awesome. Out of the box it is almost perfectly set up. The intonation is off just by a little bit and only with 2 or 3 strings. The sound seems a little washed while playing chords, but single notes are loud and clear. All the frets have edge treatment, nice and smooth. The synthetic bone used for the nut and bridge are way better than plastic, allowing for a long sustain. The guitar could use better tuning keys, but the guitar stays in tune good enough. Over all my guitar was built well, and I'm glad it sounds good, too. I would recommend this guitar for all beginner guitar players because of the sound quality, and anyone else who don't have the money for their dream guitar.Tim

I bought this guitar because it was the cheapest acoustic in the store and I wasn't sure I'd stick with playing. I have had so much fun with it a year later I feel compelled to write a review! This guitar looks, feels, and sounds great, and mine rarely needs a tune-up despite regular use. Folks are saying the action is too high but I haven't noticed (and as a newbie maybe that's helped me build finger strength more quickly, who knows.) The only con I can think of is the sound is a tiny bit thin, but for a casual player like myself, that's no big issue. I have always had trouble with guitars. My hands are small and not very strong, so I've never had good luck trying to get good, consistent sound out of a guitar. It's just been too frustrating for me to continue. I also have a hard time feeling comfortable with the size and shape of most guitars I've tried. Either way, I didn't experience any of the construction issues I read in some of the other reviews, but also I was confident in the purchase guarantee of Guitar Center, and I knew I would have received a replacement if anything was wrong. It's definitely why I purchase through Guitar Center. Now I'm so excited about playing this guitar that I practice twice a day because it's so much fun and it sounds so great. I have 6 Other Guitars and have been playing for a number of years. The build quality is Okay but One Thing about the construction is the Machine Head mounting location for the "D" String and the "G" String are situated in such a way that the Strings run really Close to the Adjacent String. The Sound is also Very Bright and Lacks Warmth in Tone even with the Tone Control all the way Down. Having said that it has a Good Action but the Fretboard was really Dry. When shopping for a first guitar for your child (or yourself) it's confusing. The sales staff will usually direct you to the solid top Yamaha FG or FS series. Tone and quality wise, those are great guitars but they also come out of the box in need of a good setup to be playable up the neck. With the PRO-1 line, Epiphone has worked hard to deliver a reasonable factory setup on one of their most inexpensive models. I can not overstate the benefit this brings to the player! A few other things that stand out for this price range: We also get NuBone nut and saddle on all pro-1 models (this is the material Taylor and other top of the line builders use on their models). The NuBone nut makes a big difference in tone. Also it's a short scale which I think makes it easier to play, the neck is a slip D profile which makes it easy to get your hand around. Tuners at 18:1 ratio not 14:1, that's a first for a guitar in this price range and you get a humidifier and free lessons. If you play the least expensive PRO-1 model against anything in the budget acoustic room at Guitar Center (for those floor plans that separate budget from high end) you notice it's easier to play than anything else…. There is a solid-top version that comes with electronics if you must have a solid top, the truth is having a solid top is overrated on most budget guitars. All solid wood construction does sound different, but when you mix a solid top with the laminated back and sides, it's just hit and miss. If you stick with playing your first guitar won't be your last, and you're more likely to keep playing if you have an instrument that sounds good that is also very easy to play. Much more than a starter guitar. Put a set of Elixir strings on this, a minor tweak of the action and away you go. Plays like an electric sounds full-bodied like a Dreadnought should. Full range of sound from base mid and treble. Mic it or I use a Dean Markley pick up for amplifier. A gorgeous sound and play sensitivity to a myriad of different styles. I have more expensive acoustic guitars. But believe it or not this one sounds better and plays better than all of them. I purchased the ebony all black model. It has a very nice look on stage. But my thing is not how an instrument looks but rather on the playability and the tonal quality. A wonderful steal for the price. I'm telling you if you purchase this guitar for practice recording or performance you will not be disappointed. And at this price point you can get one for next to the couch, one for the studio, one for the camping trip, one for the beach, and one for the stage. And still not spend as much as ONE Taylor.
For the price this is a very nice sounding and playing guitar. I have owned higher end acoustic guitars in the past, and just needed something to do some occasional acoustic recording and playing when friends came by. It isn't quite up to the Takamine that I had (but it was also well over 10x the price of this one!), but it sounds great! I did swap out the strings, but that's to be expected. Overall, it is a good looking and nice playing/sounding guitar for a very, very reasonable price.Dave

This is an incredible axe! Fender wasn't lying when they said it's their most versatile guitar yet. You'll pull sounds out of this thing that you only used to dream about. From the 1st time I saw this guitar it peaked my interest. I play an electric guitar and found it difficult to play an acoustic guitar. This guitar IS A CHAMP! Although it is an acostic-electric guitar, I love that it is made like the traditional electric Telecaster guitar. The neck is slimmer just like my electric Telecaster and the body of the guitar is also slim and light weight. This guitar is awesome with all the voicing and new cool functions that makes it comparable to an electric guitar. I can finally play on this Acoustasonic Telecaster the songs that I struggled to play on my standard acoustic guitar. It's an awesome transitional instrument. I got this guitar because I wanted an acoustic guitar and I'm used to the feel of electric guitars. I find that the ability to dial-in different tone to be a vey nice feature and I like to be able to amplify my sound. The different tones is are a bonus. What I really, really like after the sounds, is the weight and balance overall and the feel of the neck. It is much nicer than a bulky acoustic which usually requires a sitting position. The one drawback that I've run into is that the amplification hardware is battery driven (rechargeable) via a USB cable and it appears that it discharges even when not being played. Its rated at 20 hours but even if I don't play it, it needs a recharge in a day or two. I hesitate to leave it on the charger every time I put it down.JKS

I purchased this instrument on a whim. I figured it would spend it's time in the back seat of my truck. I had the itch to buy something new and this guitar was a cheap way to scratch it. I've been impressed with it. It is small and lightweight. It stays in tune well(for a nylon acoustic)and sounds pretty good. I've found myself in bed falling asleep with it on my chest. I've enjoyed it that much. Does it compare to an upper end instrument? No,of course not. Then again I wouldn't dare fall asleep playing one of those either. If you are looking for someting smaller for yourself or a student that you are not afraid to abuse this is by far worth the money.Sean488

Physical condition this guitar is in great condition with very little wear! there are a few light scuffs and swirl marks on the body but clean overall, with the most notable wear being some light scuffs over the body. otherwise, there is no other cosmetic damage to make note of aside from some incredibly light superficial scratches associated with normal play and use. overall, this is a great sounding and playing guitar! fretwear incredibly light wear on the first few frets, but otherwise no other type of fret damage! this guitar has some fret sprout on both sides of the neck all the way down, so this area needs some attention. action action is low and plays great, but may need a quick tweak to your liking! electronics all electronics work properly! case original fender gig bag and charging cable included!

This is the first Acoustic/electric that I have owned that I actually love playing. The action is great even with the large gauge acoustic strings on it. Comes with a very nice gig-bag/case. I love the way the neck and back of the guitar looks. I also love the Strat 5-way switch that selects the degree and type of acoustic sound. The only downside with this guitar is the cover that serves as a cover for the electronics and pick guard. It looks cheap, more like a decal than a cover. I think Fender can do better on this detail for the price of the guitar. However, if you can get past that then it is a fine playing and sounding guitar. I have owned several Acoustic and Acoustic/Electric guitars. The action on even high-priced acoustics was so terrible I just ended up selling them. I also do not like the large back ends of most acoustic and acoustic electric guitars, but this guitar is small and easy to play. I would give it an A-.Bill
The research I did on trying to learn more about this instrument via general internet, YouTube, assorted standard Music Company's like Sam Ash; Sweetwater; Guitar Center; Alamo; and other assorted Music Guitar critics provided a good array of opinions and product test results that produced a positive majority with impressive perspectives for the instrument I purchased. The Fender American Acoustasonic Stratocaster Acoustic-Electric Guitar Cocobolo I purchased from Sam Ash was not a disappointment. Aside from the 10 different options of Guitar unique sounds it provides from Acoustic and Electric mixes. The one-of-a-kind Cocobolo wood identifies a further fingerprint in supporting its own private one-of-a-kind signature sound with relationship to the Cocobolo wood unique to it alone. That just blows me away with how special the sound of specialty signature sound it produces with the ten different built in technical sounds the Fender Guitar company developed with this special edition. I feel overwhelmed in learning to continue how to play this guitar. It allows me so many more possibilities with playing soft country to hard rock a really strong guitar enjoyment experience.Guitar Enthusiast
Overall, I am very happy with this guitar. It exudes classic Fender looks and tone. The quality and craftsmanship are decent for the price point. I have a US Tele and, after putting some TLC into this player strat, it feels and plays almost as good as the Tele. I would give it five stars if it were not for fretwork that was needed. Body – The finish and surf pearl color are gorgeous. The wood grain is barely visible (raised) so I would not say the finish is flawless, but the grain is very subtle and adds character in my opinion. The routed cavities for the electronics (top) and the tremolo springs (back) are precisely cut and clean. The electronics cavity was even finished with black paint. Neck – The finish and appearance are great. However, all 22 frets had sprouted; some as much as 1/32". I can't say this is a craftsmanship issue as the frets were probably fine when it was assembled. It must have been a very high humidity environment, though. Nevertheless, after painstakingly filing and redressing all 44 fret ends it feels good. The frets themselves were well seated and leveled. The 3rd and 11th frets were a few thousands of an inch high, but not enough to cause any buzzing issues. The frets were well rounded and polished. Hardware – The tuners are just okay. One of them feels a little rough turning, and they seem to have a low turning ratio making it very touchy to dial in perfect pitch. The 2-point fulcrum tremolo bridge seems like a better design than the traditional (six screw) bridges, but I did not test it. I prefer to block them for more stable tuning, which worked great with this bridge. I have upgraded electronics I had planned to install in this guitar, but the stock pickups aren't bad. They are very quiet and have good tone – there is no rush to replace them. Setup was a breeze. Truss rod adjustment was smooth, nut slots were to spec, and intonation was perfect. The action needed adjustment since I blocked the tremolo, but that was easy.Dave S.

I played this instrument along with a couple of competitor's parlor guitars in the price range at a local big box music store. This Fender was head and shoulders above the rest. The others (both 12 frets) had the look and feel of toys and a small body sound. The CP60s has a nice tone and responds well to both strumming and finger style. I can't believe the quality, playability and sound of this guitar for this price. It out performs several full dive guitars in the price range. The only reason I didn't buy one at this time was a recent acquisition of another instrument from MF.Brooks

Inexpensive but good beginner guitar. However you should swap out the steel strings this comes with a good set of nylon strings. This is a Classical guitar and must have nylon. Steel strings will only make this guitar last a shorter amount of time. Otherwise for the money and for anyone, kid or adult, this is an excellent buy to begin learning guitar. Sounds great with the nylon I swapped out and the guitar will last longer.Paul Fox
