Sound: I’m really happy with the sound pallet available on the SY-1. You can get Metheny style saw wave/string style leads, several organ sounds, Bladerunner basses etc. It’s got a lot of 80’s synth vibe to it. The sound editing is somewhat limited yes, but that’s exactly why I went back to the SY1 from the other synth pedals I tried. Sound for sound, I found the SY1 had the most usable sounds for my style. Pair it up with some chorus, delay, and long decay reverb and it is capable of sounding incredible. Features: By far the best feature to me is that everything you need to make/change sounds is on the top. No PC editor required. While it does limit the capabilities it’s also much easier for an old guy like me to get musical sounds out of it without breaking out a manual or re-learning everything I have forgotten about synths LFO’s and filters from the '80s. Ease of Use: Very easy to use. Plug it in, turn some knobs until you smile. Pair it with an expression pedal for even more fun things to do. Quality: It’s Boss. It’s built like a tank. If zombies rush the stage it could be used as a weapon. Clean it up, plug it back in, and keep playing. Value: When compared to similar offerings from Source Audio, Meris, EHX, I think the SY1 is a fair value. A bit less functionality but what you get instead is easy access to usable sounds for a few bucks less. Manufacturer Support: In the 40 years I’ve been using Boss I’ve only contacted them once. No issues. The Wow Factor: Synth pedals aren’t for everyone, sure. But for that occasional something different on a lead or just for tooling around over ambient soundscapes they can be a lot of fun. Overall: I would consider myself your garden variety guitar player. I play rhythm and lead in a rock cover band and do some ambient and prog stuff on my own and this fits right in with the rest of the gear on my pedalboard. I’ve tried a few other guitar synth pedals from Boss, Meris, and Source Audio and ended up going back to this one because it fits my style and needs the best. The tracking is very, very good. In my humble opinion it tracks better than the C4. I’m not Alex Hutchings but I can play moderately fast and it keeps up with no issues. Compared to other synth pedals this is much more straightforward but also much more limited in sounds. It’s very 80’s vs some of the more experimental sounds you can get out of the others, but that’s what I was looking for. If you are looking for bleeps and boops sounds or want deep editing, this pedal probably isn’t for you. If you are looking for a more traditional GR style sounding synth then this is definitely worth checking out.Allan
This is a very enjoyable pedal. Would I recommend it, and is it good value? That depends on your expectations. It benefits from being used in conjunction with other pedals as on there own some of the synth tones are very dry and digital. I feed an overdrive into it, and a light reverb after. Adding fuzz to the effects loop also adds to make the overall effect more massive. That being said, I have struggled to find tones that I can use with my (rock) band in a live setting, and I was hoping it would enhance/thicken up my sound. Build. It’s a Boss so it will probaat still be around when our sun has gone supernova. Sound. Nothing short of amazing when you consider you do not need to screw some kind of special pick-up on your guitar. And there are sounds galore, 11 types that have 11 subtypes each. That’s 121 in totaal! And all your favorites are there, Lead, Organ, Pad, you name it. Use. As straightforward as it could be. Choise your mail type, select a subtype, dial in tone and debt, adjust the mix with the original signal and you are good to go. Features. On the upside this pedal has it’s own effect loop, the sound of the unit can be manipulated with an external expression pedal, for driving the effect up an octave for instance and the front of the pedal (next to the powerinput) has a little switch where you can determine whether you are using the unit with a guitar or a bassguitar. Possible concerns are the facts that there is no MIDI compatibility, sound can’t be restored or recalled and, suprisingly enough, the unit is mono. Bang for the buck? For days! With these possabilities, features and sounds it is basicalky a steal, not to mention how little real estate this unit takes up on your pedalboard.

This pedal is not for all but for those who like to have an extra set of colors to paint with- this does what it says- turns your guitar into a simple monophonic synthesizer. It tracks well and gives some really cool tones and invigorates playing and creativity. Some dont like the harshness – but like every synth, the raw sound is the starting point. Adding effects make synths shine so I put it early in my pedal chain. Running it through a light overdrive softens it up and smooths it out. Adding a little delay really made it sparkle. I ended up with a zipper-like p-funk sound for a new track. Build quality is great and the tiny footprint is just awesome. I would definitely buy more pigtronix pedals- this being my first. I give it four stars only because I cant seem to give 4.5. it is by nature a limited pedal and admittedly a bit harsh. It seemed to output much higher than my clean signal goin in so taming it required a little more effort than I would have thought- but its possible I am doing something wrong or need more time with it. But heres the deal: I wanted a pedal to insert in my chain that could help me sound like no one else and this definitely helped do the trick. If you want a synth on your board and dont want to break the bank for an occasional effect forwicked leads- then this pedal is a definite winner. Check out R.J. there are some very attractive things about this box but it has some issues… polyphony being the main one… overlapping notes create a miserable grainy high end chaos noise… so you have to use it very cautiously and articulate your attacks and note offs to avoid the onslaught of this unmusical aliasing morass… i've only been exploring it for a week or so so my jury is still out on the ultimate verdict about it's usability… the good news is that it doesn't sound like some crappy preset box synth… the legato waves are rich in themselves.. etcdalin-4440

Bottom line up front: I’m blown away I’ve been playing guitar synths off and on for about 25 years. I’ve had the GR-1, 09, 20, and 33, and the VG-99. The GR-55 was always on my wish list, but it was never in the cards. With the advent of the SY-300 I was intrigued about the possibility of playing synth tones without the GK pickup and 13 pin cable. Wireless guitar synth?? Yes, please! Then Boss introduced the SY-1000. Alex Hutchings’ videos do an awesome job of showing you what it can do. But now that I’ve been able to play mine for a bit (thank you AMS for the 12 pay plan), I am truly blown away by just how powerful it is AND how easy it is to edit with the software editor. I use this product live. It has excellent emulations of other guitars, as well as sitar and banjo, so if you don't want to carry a lot of instruments, this could be the answer. As with other Boss/Roland products, it has a "clunky" interface (e.g., GR 55, GT1000), and in my view, Boss should really work on that. It takes a significant amount of time and experimentation to get usable sounds from the synths, and quite honestly, the presets are novel but mostly useless. You CAN use them as templates for your own sounds, but as I said, this takes a lot of tweaking…if you're into that sort of thing, this is your processor. It's like I got a bucket of assorted boss pedals. Great sounds! It's all about layering with this thing. After my second round through the interface I was moving patches editing affects programming expression pedals quite easily. With my touchscreen laptop running the PC software the editing is even easier. One of the neatest features for me was the effects send and return being able to be placed anywhere within the virtual effects chain. If you liked the SY1 but wished it had presets, here ya go! In a nutshell it's the SY1 with presets. It's got the same sounds and same limited control features but now you can tweak and save. Programming is very easy, more so if you are already familiar with the Boss 200 style pedals. Check out the zillion YouTube videos to hear for yourself. Sounds just like that when you get it home 🙂 Of course I wish it was more powerful like an Enzo or C4 but those two require a PHD to get anything other than a Theremin on LSD type of sound. If you need simple 80's goodness added to your pedalboard then this is your ticket. It's fun and good for you. Buy one.AJB
Tried the Sy-1 and it sounded great but no presets. Bought an Sy-300 and to many effects cover the synth sounds and too complicated for me. The Sy-200 sits in the Goldilocks zone for me. It's just right. The synth sounds are beautiful and 80 percent of the factory presets are usable IMO. If I want effects I can add my own using the effects loop. I really like the Sy-200.Jack

Sonically this is incredible. I would say the permutations of sounds are almost infinite and it is way more than just a synth pedal because of the alt-functions. Functionally I think it has a few issues. For a pedal that costs over 300 quid to not have any ability to save presets without having to buy a separate MIDI preset switch (>£100) is poor, especially as it's quite hard to reproduce sounds because the standard and alt-functions are on the same dial and it's hard to know where each is at. It also feels quite flimsy. Although it has a metal enclosure, it feels light and like it wouldn't survive a drop. There are also gaps in the enclosure through which you can see the electronics, so it is definitely not fluid proof. It feels more like a studio tool. It requires a lot of time to understand how to get the most from it and it's easy to make it sound like garbage, so this is definitely a pedal for the tweekers out there.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

Great sounding fuzz and modulation pedal. get pink floyd style tones. flanger, u-vibe, phaser and rotary mod modes. 3 fuzz settings. made in the usa. the dark side is a really good pedal for a minimal setup because you can get so many different tones with it. for the fuzz you can even verge on a mild boost to give you lead an extra push, but crank it up and you've got more aggressive fuzz tone. modulation gives you great sounding flanger, u-vibe, phaser and rotary. you can either fuzz or modulation individually, or together. there is also expression pedal compatibility which dictates modulation repeats. there's also a delay setting which then uses the secondary mode you can see on some knobs.

About The Keeley Darkside Pedal: This is a pedal that many people will buy, set the settings to the Pink Floyd sounds, have fun with it then probably sell it. The people that don't resell this pedal will be the ones that think outside of the Triangle and experiment with it. Use the External food pedal and really get the full use from the Tape Delay, Phaser and Rotary. The ability to blend the Flange and Phaser and the Rotary and Univibe are a few things that make this pedal really special and unique. Then add in the vintage Fuzz which you can adjust the Fuzz Filter. You can set the fuzz to Flat, Full or Scoop. You can also adjust the level of the fuzz and put the fuzz before or after the Flange/Rotary/Phaser/Delay. The Tape Delay is incredible and really easy to dial in and start playing something inspiring very quickly. This pedal is much like the band Pink Floyd where they are both extremely experimental and have no limits on what you can create. I love to use the Tape Delay with the Expression Pedal because I can push the pedal forward and get the repeats to go endless then lift up my foot to let that fade as I add textures on top of that. I highly recommend this pedal and I highly recommend experimenting with it. Think outside the Triangle and you will have endless inspiration and fun. I love this thing! Fantastic audio quality. I think the fuzz sounds really great. Easily among the finest Big Fuzz clones on the market and I like the fact that you got the 3-way mid range switch, allowing for a wide range of different tones from the era. And the filter really lets you hone in the tones. My main issue with the Dark Side is the fact that you can't have a modulation effect and the delay selected at the same time. They share the same circuit and can't be used simultaneously. Delay is a critical part of David's sound. Overall, it sounds great and I have had no problem using it as a part of my rig. This being the 2nd iteration of the pedal, I do wish Mr. Keeley would've left the insert capability. I prefer to have my overdrive after my Fuzz, and before any modulation.MetalChief

I'm not a guitar guy so I can't speak to its abilities in that respect, but with this pedal as a new resident in my synths effects loop I think I will be keeping it plugged in indefinitely. The POG has an excellent ability to fatten up whatever you put through it, or work it almost like a filter and turn a synth loop anemic by sending it all through the octaver, only to reintroduce the sub and dry later on for a great effect. I could go on and on, but it'll be more fun if you buy one yourself and see what I am talking about first hand.
Dry signal integrity is good but as soon as you bring in the octave up or down, the sound becomes very synthetic, it takes all the punch out of the guitar. I don't think it sounds good with open or barre chords, the most you can get away with is a power chord. If you want to make video game music this could be cool, or for some limited effects when you are recording. It sounds like a synthesizer or an organ. It has a very good buffered bypass if you're worried about that. I tried it clean and with some OD and fuzz and I don't think it enhances the tone, it is much more of a special effect than anything, and its too expensive to be so limited. Gets 2 stars because EHX is quality and doesn't deserve 1.Adam

For someone who has recently started learning guitar and not in a position to own a classic or boutique tube amp yet, HX Stomp has transformed my learning experience. While not a cheap pedal to buy its much cheaper that its direct competition but with equal sound quality and flexibility. Its also much cheaper than buying a proper tube amp. Being a new player, it allows me to explore all manner of different amps to find a sound I like so when I eventually do buy a tube amp I’ll know exactly what I like. The size of the unit is just perfect for fitting onto a pedalboard and sounds amazing along with my existing pedals before it in the chain or in the Stomps FX Loop. Matching the tones of the songs I’m leaning is both fun and just amazing how close I can get in a few simple steps. It also lets me experiences how different the guitar feels to play through different style amps. With just simple fretting techniques I’m sounding like I’m an 80’s rock star which is something my small practice amp couldn’t even begin to reproduce. The sound quality and variety of tones available from sweet and clean to pure filth is a complete joy to use. My wife also loves it as she can no longer hear my daily practicing as now playing through headphones is so simple.GARETH W.
The HX Stomp is a ridiculous powerhouse of a pedal. I'm not a modeling expert or guru, but this thing is incredibly intuitive and fun to use. I've previously owned M9s and M5s and this picks up where those left off. If you're a fan of multi effect pedals, and interested in amp modeling look no further. You have to be strategic with what combinations you want since the DSP isn't unlimited, but I don't find that to be too much of a nuisance. Since you can run your analog pedals into it, efx loop or not, you have so many tonal options. I've purchased an external footswitch to add buttons and a dedicated tap tempo which I'd recommend to add functionality and ease of use. Besides those additions and minor gripes I'd highly recommend this unit. *The PolyCapo effect is my favorite! I use it to emulate a baritone guitar without needing to own another guitar and that alone to me justifies the price.
This unit is amazing value for money, so many tones available through the choices of effects amps and cabs it is almost overwhelming! There is however an amazing online community of HX Stomp users who share a huge amount of expertise so it was very easy to get up and running with the pedal. Brilliant. Only thing you should be aware of is that sticking it on a pedalboard isn’t the easiest thing in the world, it’s quite highly powered and the connector is non standard so you would need an adaptor to run it on a pedalboard. I preordered this on AMS without, obviously, trying it out. I had only seen some clips from NAMM, etc. I wanted a ‘noisemaker’ more than anything…a little secret weapon with another flavor on my board. It’s a lot of fun so far. It mentions that it’s not intended for chords like several times in the manual. But honestly, that’s where it gets cool & weird. Like, seriously science fiction stuff. Try it with an expression pedal! I have one for my EQD Avalanche Run so I tried it out on the Mono Synth for kicks and it opened up a whole new level. Being monophonic, some of the sounds require you to be very deliberate when playing as even a slight slurring of notes can cause the pedal to have a little mental breakdown. Overall excellent. The Flint is a favorite guitar pedal for players of all stripes and there's a good reason that it's often seen on many pro players pedalboards. It has fairly straightforward controls and multiple parameters that are easily adjustable on the face of the pedal. Probably the most important is the great sound quality that it offers. There are three distinct flavors of reverb and three different styles of tremolos. They all are usable in many different styles of music. I haven't spent much time with the original V1 pedal and I suspect that if you have one, this may not be a huge upgrade, as that one has been a guitarist favorite for many years. V2 does add midi control, if that important in your situation. I suggest, as always, check out all the demos and think about what your own needs are and how the Flint would fit in with the gear you have. This is my 5th Strymon pedal and they have all offered something beautiful and inspiring.

A fun little pedal if you want to experiment with synth tones on a budget and without taking up much board space. Solid construction with metal housing and easily understandable controls. In particular I've found mode 7, the "EDM/Pad", to give some really usable results for background synth drones and swells. Combining it with a compressor to add more sustain works well and I've also had nice results adding some chorus and flanger which can smooth out some of the harsher tones. Tracking and latency seem to be fine. Most modes cope well with chords too, except the organ one (mode 2). Works well with a bass too. On the downside, as a micro pedal the knobs are very small so it's not something you'll want to tweak mid-set, though it does allow for saving presets. If I was going to nitpick I think it would also be more practical if the hold-down-footswtich control changed between modes rather than toggling on the arpeggiator.Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.

I have been doing a ton of research for a poly octave generator pedal and man, did I find it! As a bass player in a fusion band playing in a small bar weekly, I find myself getting buried in the sound during my soloing. I bought this pedal to mainly be used for an upper octave sound that tracked well, had a small footprint on my pedalboard, and would not lose any dry signal. Am I glad i bought this? YES! I have some tweed amp clones (5E3, 5E7, 5F11) and wanted to see how they sounded with reverb and tremolo. I have a friend who allowed me to borrow his stand alone tube driven reverb/ trem unit made by a well known and respected boutique builder (street price 1500 to 1800 USD). I bought this pedal locally to compare against that unit. (300USD). THIS PEDAL SOUNDED JUST AS GOOD WITH ALMOST NO NOISE. I returned the stand alone unit. I won't be returning this pedal. Sounds very good on all the "period" settings, built like a tank, super quiet operation. If you're looking for a good pedal for recreating a lot of old school sounds, as well as more modern ones, look no further. This is the one you want.LUCIAN
I bought this to compliment a non-tremolo/reverb head and it works great through the effects loop. I also like this with my 64 custom deluxe reverb. Gives me more control and versatility than the on board Tremolo and reverb and much easier to dial the Flint in for a range of sounds. Absolutely nails those classic tones. I've been wanting to try this pedal out for years. It's such a weird and fascinating device. Fair warning to bassists that like to play chords, most of the sound modes don't respond to chords and when playing more than one note at a time jumps around between the notes and octaves. It gives an interesting effect, though, so some could see this as an extra treat. I don't mind it personally because a lot of synths like the ones they model the sounds after have that single-note limitation, I don't remember what the technical term is if there is one. Anyway, this pedal has a lot of great synth sounds from square wave to saw, pulse modulation, etc. Some modes turn your bass's note spectrum a whole octave lower. The sound quality is pretty great and the range is pretty wide. I've played it through a 15 watt Ibanez practice bass amp and it still sounds like a real bass synth without any significant loss in quality or intensity. It's the perfect pedal for someone like me who loves the sounds of synths, likes to add bass synths to their recordings, and isn't so great at keyboard. I'm mainly a guitarist with a lot of bass experience as well and so recording/writing music with guitar/bass makes more sense for my mind. Now I can write and play bass synth riffs without having to program midi whenever I run into a tricky melody. Also, I figured this pedal was going to be like a matte dark grey, but it's a very shiny and attracted silver. It's one of the coolest looking pedals on my rig now.blackenedwhiplash
I have a lot of fun with this pedal. It could be used to create some unique intros and transition pieces in a live show, and fiddling with the "rate" knob allows you to do some DJ-style stuff too. I enjoy the different modes and the option to make the "effect" sound and the natural "bass" sound either higher or lower to each other. A few things to keep in mind: This device puts out a preprogrammed sound to whichever of the 12 notes you play into it. So it doesn't make a difference what other pedal effects you put through it via input, or what instrument you play through it for that matter. (I use it on my guitar as well.) Also, my biggest hangup is that the effect sound is not very sensitive to playing many notes quickly, like in a solo for example. You have to hit the string very distinctly and long enough for the pedal to process each note. This disappointed me because I play prog/power metal and wanted this pedal to help me replace keyboard solos with my better bass playing. It does not respond quickly enough to do that. This pedal is a great showoff toy for my pedal board, and non-musical audience people will be mildly impressed, but it is not a necessity to my general sound. For the price, I would buy general pedals like EQ, condensor, chorus, and overdrive before this one. A fun device, but not an economic purchase for a musician on a tight budget when considering how much you might use it (unless you find a great deal on ebay of course!)x_stout
I picked up this pedal to replace a digitech wah pedal. The digfitech was ok, but I felt it injected too much distorion, this pedal is an actual synth and give a much cleaner sound. I find it very useful for adding a little bit of funk, mixing it back into the clean signal from the bass. The controls are easy to understand and allow a wide range of variation in the sound. Always surprised by these mini pedals when I take them out of the box, how do they fit it all in???? Despite its size the Ratsbane has an incredible amount of gain available, the different voicings allow you to dial in mild amp-like distortion through to insane sizzling fuzz as well as some great classic metal tones. There's a reason this pedal is known as the King of Distortion. Brian Wampler does it again by packing an all-in-one and fully dynamic overdrive/distortion pedal and basing it on a "rodent" type pedal first brought out in the '80's. This pedal is perfect for everything from big 90's lead tones to subtle crunch overdrive tones and everything in-between.

Sound: OK, so the pre-set programs are hit and miss for me. But that had to be expected, as I am not plugging a guitar into it, but rather a Korg RK100-S2 keytar. For obvious reasons, the cleaner patches, and patches designed around arpeggios sound decent, while the shredding metal patches sound like ass. I'm sure they would both sound good if I was hooked up with an actual 6 string. Features: The most useful feature as far as I'm concerned, are all of those knobs all over the front of the unit. They make it so easy to dial in the sound. Especially when compared to the all digital products like the GT-1. I had a GT-1B last year, and it was aggravating to modify sounds on the fly. The other most useful feature is the Tone Central app. OMG!!! Last month, I trashed Korg's design decision in their app for modifying the keytar's sounds. The window can't be resized, the lines of text are nearly microscopic, it isn't REMOTELY intuitive to figure out how to re-write the patches. Boss' Tone Central app is the EXACT OPPOSITE of all of that. Full screen, each effect section is on screen alone and has 3 different ways to modify the settings. Get things the way you want, name your patch, and click "write," then choose where you want it saved, and click "OK." It couldn't be simpler. Ease of Use: If the preset patches are hit and miss, the "manual mode" is why I bought this board. The keytar really needs some effects to come alive. This board is simply a placeholder until I can build a quality keytar/synth specific pedal board. Compression, delay, and/or phasers can add a lot of depth to my sound depending on what I'm currently using. Those dials make it super easy to get the sound right quickly. It does sort of suck that they are on the floor, but how could that have been avoided without bluetooth and a phone app? And, if that was the case, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place! Quality: I bought this "blemished." My guess, based on the condition of the box that the factory shipped to zZounds, is that this took a fall off of a shelf in the warehouse. One end of the box was mangled badly! Thanks to Boss' attention to detail in packaging, and legendary build quality, I got this product without a scuff, scratch, or dent for 20% off. I like that build quality. (Feel free to play football with some of those synth specific stomp boxes guys! *wink-wink*) Value: Before my fretting hand got too badly damaged to play bass anymore, I wanted the bass version of this product. I believe that it was discontinued, and I missed my chance. I got the GT-1B but didn't like working with it. When I saw that this was available, I didn't hesitate to put it into my cart. Only then, after the fact, did I realize that it was in "blemished" condition. I almost went back and put a new, full priced one in my cart simply because I didn't want the hassle of potentially returning a broken product. So, yes, I do believe this is worth the normal retail price. Manufacturer Support: In the 12 years I've been playing, I've owned several Boss products from tuners to metronomes to multi effects pedals and I have NEVER had to reach out for support. In my estimation, that's the BEST form of customer service! The Wow Factor: G.A.S.! I can't play guitar a lick. But I've bought guitars in the past simply to hang them on the wall. I can't say that I would ever buy THIS product if I didn't need it. But I'm sure that it will still find some place in my home studio, even after the actual pedal board is complete Overall: An easy recommendation for the guitarist on a budget. Depending on one's needs, stomp boxes and pedal boards can become quite pricey. Between this, the Tone Central app, and the hundreds of additional patches available there, if you can't get the sound you're looking for, the problem lies mostly with you.
I have been buying and selling multi effects for many years. I loved them all, even the silly ones such as the RP50, 505, ME30..too many. I guess my favorites were the Korg AX3000G(which I thought was ahead of its time) and the Digitech RP500(awesome reverbs, mods and filters),and even some Pods for their amp sims too. Yes yes.. they all had their short comings in different avenues.. Boss reliability is were a part of Ny early playing days since the 80s..and to this day, I use Boss single pedals almost exclusively as my main rig. I just love the simplicity of their individual pedals and this unit is the only one that comes close in terms of the logic of its settings. I love KNOBS, and the ME80 has plenty to go around with. SIMPLICITY is the key . No more scrolling up n down a screen on the floor which I can hardly see. Now is the ME80 the best sounding multi-effect out there? No sir! With all the current technologies which can produce units such as The Kemper, Fractals, Boss GT1000, and other high res IR capable units from Zoom and Line 6(including some very capable Chinese newcomers), the ME80 can be seen as kind of outdated to some, The ME80 is certainly not what the top guns use these days, especially when occupying an arena concert stages I'm sure(but I bet they still use one or two boss pedals in their rig lol)..Also, Let's not forget that the ME80 initial introduction day to the world was just about eight years ago.. shall we? But guess what, it's still alive and kicking! And that is exactly why you still see it here for sake in 2022 ar least until Boss comes out with some new monster that can handle the GT1000 chipsets and adding more KNOBS to its chassis. The ME80 is gorgeous, it sounds good, and it has a personality. It also has more to offer than its predecessors such as the ME50/70..I mean, the addition of a separate footswitch for reverb,EQ and a simple patch recall?? I would recommend this unit for any small club or a tight rehearsal space for a quick setup and a speedy wrap-up after a show, when it's finally time to go home, no patch cables required.I AM KEEPING THIS ONE FOR MYSELF! Till I get to warm up for Bruno Mars(not happening soon lol),My main Boss rig is staying home, and that goes to my crybaby and the Budda volume pedal with all them patch cables entourage.James
I don't want to program guitar effects. I don't want to read cheesy names for effects that I can't immediately recognize or understand. The young people like that stuff but I am old and old school. The ME-80 gives me my old stomp boxes but grouped on a modern platform. It is basically foot pedal controlled with a very nice expression pedal and 8 on-off pedals. The foot pedals work flawlessly. But the thing that makes this unit awesome is the knobs. You can turn a knob, set a value and get instant feedback on what you did and look at it anytime to see what it is set at. If you know stomp boxes then you know exactly how this thing works. It has by my estimation about $4K worth of stomp box effects and amp emulations. Whether you want an old Tube Screamer or a Big Muff Fuzz. This thing has it. And it has many new stomp box effects like the amazing Tera Echo, Harmonist, Freeze and a Looper. It has just about every effect you could want and you can play multiple effects at the same time. As far as I am concerned this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. And I am an original POD user. I still plug into the POD now and then. But the POD is history. The ME-80 is what I like today. I even commissioned a guy to build me an angled stand to boost up the knobs and pedal to make it easier for me to dial in changes. I had it painted orange to match my Orange Crush 35RT amp where I port the ME-80 output. Lastly, if you insist on being a programmer, they let you do that as well and offer a ton of presets online. You can hook up by USB to your computer and program away. Brilliant. The one down side… you have to buy an AC/DC adaptor for $30 or use up a lot of batteries. Fantastic! If you already have an amp you love, the HX Effects is a great companion. I upgraded from a Line 6 M9 to the HX Effects, and was able to get rid of some of my auxiliary pedals in the process. My pedalboard now consists of the HX Effects, an expression pedal, and the channel switch footpedal for my amp (Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 36). I'm running it into the amp via the four cable method, and it sounds great. The vast majority of the effects sound very natural and analog-ish, even the drive effects. There's no amp/cabinet modeling, but Line 6 offers other options with amp modeling if that's where your interests lie. Most of the built-in scenes aren't particularly useful – they mostly serve to illustrate what the HX Effects is capable of. But it's easy to start from scratch and quickly get to some nice workable tones. Then you can tweak to your heart's content. The HX Edit software is very useful – while you can edit your patches on the device itself, being able to do so on your computer and have them updated on the device in real time is convenient. The only area that might be a bit lacking is the reverb patches. Most are carryovers from the M9 – which are fine – but if this is an area that's important to you, you'll probably want to stick with a separate reverb unit. Overall though, it's a whole lot of options in an attractive package that sounds great.Lane Denson
I have a Helix that I've been using for a couple years now, but I don't think that the amp models feel "tubey" enough to my hands on the guitar (though they sound just fine, and my audiences say they love the sound of them), so to make myself happy, I had the Helix configured in 4 cable method, with some Helix effects, thru 2 Mesa preamps in one of the FX Loops, then stereo effects (delay, etc) then out to a Mesa 2:90 power amp and speakers. Realizing that I'm not using the amp models, I bought two HX Effects units, one for before the preamps and one for after, saved myself some weight, and gained 4 effects stomp buttons and one more expression pedal jack! (and, if HX Effects had been available when I bought the Helix early on, I could have saved hundreds of dollars to boot) One of my biggest peeves with the Helix was that you can put maybe 30 effects into your signal chain, but then you only have 8 stomp buttons (configurable to 10 if you don't need bank up/down) to access them without constantly switching presets or snapshots. with two HX effects, you get 12 buttons and 4 expression pedal jacks. AND the expression pedals don't need switches (heel position automatically switches them off) which is something I really love. I'm not aware of the Helix doing this, but I'll look into it. I use an outboard switchless Morley wah pedal (thru another FX loop) because I prefer switchless wah for what I do with it, then I have a couple expression pedals for Helix volume and pitch-shift (whammy pedal). Last weekend, I did a festival gig debuting the HX Effects pair vs the whole Helix, and my 10+ year old faithful Morley wah failed on me during soundcheck! Well, with a few easy button presses, I simply changed the whammy pedal into a Crybaby Wah and the gig was saved! Technically, I could have just as easily done the exact same thing with the Helix, but in either case, a life saver. Who brings a backup wah to a gig? “Did he Just Say what I think he did” is probably the question you’re asking yourself right now! Let’s be real, acquiring gear is part of the fun of being a mucisian! I love the thrill of finding a new overdrive, or swimming in a new reverb pedal, I love gear just as much as the next guy, and don’t get me started about the rush you get when you discover a new piece a gear that no else has! But let also be a honest, gear is EXPENSIVE, and if you are anything like me you may have a spouse who doesn’t look kindly upon the purchase of a new Pedal, plus I have run out of excuses as to why I need a new pedal! So in order to acquire new require me to sell old gear, which means usually I get less then what I paid so technically I’m losing money! The HX Effects has solved that issue for me, with so many different effects, that run mon and stereo, and to add, they sound phenomenal! In no time you can create a gigable rig with this one piece of gear! The learning curve is quick, you don’t need a a loop controller, or midi controller, it’s already built in! This is arguably one of the best gear buys I have ever made, no more losing money, no more unhappy wife, and with every update Line 6 makes, it’s like getting a basket full of new pedals!
