There are a few "good" brands of electric guitar strings, and I have always chosen Ernie Ball as my goto set. They cost less, and last just as long as anything else that I have tried so that right there is enough for me. The new Cobalt, and Paradigm series strings are even better in my opinion, and it is the Paradigm that I use on my personal guitars now but for every guitar that I sell (several every month) it is always Cobalt series strings. I live on the Florida coast so anything made of metal is short lived especially guitar strings but the Cobalts do the trick, and last a couple of months for me.zombie415.2009
These strings need no credability having already been used and endorsed by the likes of Eric Clapton and Steve Vai and many more guitar giants. I only recently tried these cobalts and will probably never go back to the standard nickel strings. The big difference you notice right away is the feel of the strings when pressed and played, almost giving the feel of having a scalloped neck. The strings have a sort of elasticity to them, making for easy bending. Just a great feel. The next difference you'll notice is the higher output they give, while in my case actually making each note more distinct and clear at higher gains. Overall: Use these exclusively on my 7 string. Perfect gauge sizing for down tuning; I love tuning to GDGCFAD. As far as "output" I can't really discern any advantage over other strings, but these of course have that great bouncy Ernie ball sound to them. I feel like they last a tad longer than plain Ernie balls but it could be a placebo effect. The gauge is perfect for what I do, anything else with these is just a plus. I seen people was giving these strings bad reviews because after 2 weeks of playing everyday, they said strings go bad. I have NEVER had any issues with these strings, i for one say replace your strings every 2 weeks anyway ESPECIALLY if you play everyday. But owning multiple guitars sometimes it never goes that way, i have now had these on my jackson, and i put them on 5 months ago, play everyday and there still going strong, hardly any rust, definitely tell their wore out but over all BEST STRINGS on the market, great tone, great durability, never breaks, and great feel.Durbify
These are punchy and dynamic strings, with a certain warmth and colour to them. Like pure nickel strings, only the wound strings have the cobalt alloy wrap. If you like pure nickels, to get away from that grainy/dark/grey of normal iron/steel strings, but wish for something a little darker and with more outright balls than pure nickels, you will absolutely love these!4992andy

Overall: I've never been one to write reviews however my few purchases at zZounds compels me to. They have enabled me to get top shelf medicinal music gear that I cud never afford without their payment plan. I have 4 deployments to war zones and am retired early now however my credit not to Shiney from a previous relationship. Their no credit check really is a blessing for people like me that have the integrity but not the credit score. Too my point. I never knew strings made such a difference. These elixirs are a little slick but wonderful once you get used to it in about an hour. Every note is very defined and the highs dont hurt your ears and lows and miss are great. I find these strings extremely good if you have ceramic pickups. Just some magic about them. I gave a shot and they improved my sound technique and overall experience with a guitar. I thought I found the magic when I got some Erie ball cobalts. The feel is similar but the sound of the elixirs optiweb are much better. Harmonics come through much better as well. I will definitely be using elixirs for a while until I may find something better in my tone search.Tigger
I usually use 10-46 but bending them requires a bit of effort. I've since changed to the 10/46 Optiweb from the Nanoweb Elixir's and they are so much better. However, I needed a set for a 25.5" scale guitar I'm keeping in E Standard, so opted for the 9/42 to try out. They feel amazing, play beautifully and are very bright sounding. In the past, I've used several non-coated strings (D'Addario XL/XT/NYXL, GHS Boomers, custom brands, Ernie Ball Slinky/Cobalt/M-Steel). Though some were better than others, even the nicer ones like NYXL or M-Steel didn't last as long as I'd like for the price, and the cheaper ones either started with not great tone/feel or got that way too quickly, requiring too often string changes. I had used Elixir strings before (Poly and Nano). Though the Nano were better than the Poly, and had good tone and lasted long, they still felt coated and I didn't love the feel. When these Optiwebs came out, I tried them out. I totally love the feel of them, as they don't even feel coated. They still have the solid Elixir tone and I can leave them on for 3-4 months without losing any tone or tuning stability. I work at least 3 night a week as a lead guitarists / vocalist . so I use my main Strat a lot . after I ran out of Fender's I used GHS and noticed I was breaking strings .. so I tried the Ernie Ball's .. breaking strings again ! I went to a local music store and bought a pack of Fender's . as an experiment I wasted to see how long before one would break . SIX WEEKS ! .. THEY LASTED 6 WEEKS ! .. Elixirs go on all 7 of my guitars. They last upto a year before I even notice them losing their fresh tone. 6-8 months on my everyday Les Paul's and Strat. These are the best strings I've ever used. GORE has been trying to discontinue and keeps pushing the Nanoweb version: but the difference is huge! No match at all! The Elixir Polyweb maintain their tone, brightness and tension over 10 times what a Nanoweb does and probably twice that number over un-coated strings. I play every day and I've had guitars with over 6-7-8 months using the same set of strings with no issues. The're that good! BTW, my main guitars are Gibson Les Paul (TonePros Nashville and Tune-O-Matic Locking Bridge, Tusq Nut) and PRS Custom 24 (Tremolo version with Bronze Saddles and a Tusq Nut). These strings feel so good… no such thing as a strange feel because they're coated. You actually feel like playing with a very familiar and comfy feel. These Elixir Polyweb keep outperforming their competitors easily: D'Addario EXP, DR Extra, Fender DuraTone, Dean Markley Blue Steel, Earnie Ball Coated Slinky or the latest Earnie Ball Cobalt. This was a great price on my favorite strings. Shipping was very fast too. Unfortunately, "new" does not mean the same as"fresh" and I have now learned the difference. These do seem to be genuine Elixers, but a few problems which led to broken strings may indicate that these were either sitting on a shelf for a very long time or else exposed to moisture. Normally, brand new strings will be very springy when you first take them out of the sleeve. They generally will uncoil into a straight line, but every single one of these maintained a strong curl or twist in it. But that alone was not a problem for me. The strings installed normally and tuned well, but the tonal quality seemed a little sub-par compared to what I was used too. Still, it's possible I was just imagining that. The strings were fine for a month. Held there notes as well as any, and the tone was at least decent, though I still felt it was missing something. But after one month I had the B string break. I usually keep Elixer strings for 6 months before they finally lose their great tone and I replace them, and because I wind plenty of extra string around the posts, I haven't had a string break on me in over 8 years. Breaking one now pretty much confirmed my earlier suspicions. I went ahead and replaced all 6 strings with the next set, but 2 weeks later and the high E string broke on me. For now I'm borrowing the high E from the final set, but the first chance I get I will be replacing every string with a new, fresh set from a local music store. I don't think I'll buy strings online again because of this apparent problem of freshness.jaredlang85
Long lasting, great sound. I went to my girlfriends sisters home for Xmas and a few guys got a some guitars out and we played some rock, country and bluegrass on Elixers strung on acoustic instruments. They claimed the strings were three years old. They sounded quite good for their age. After seeing a John Paul Jones interview where he said Elixers were all he used. I already used them but his opinion completely sold me. I even bought an Elixer tee shirt. I use them on all my guitars and mandolins. I won't settle for anything else. I went through two sets of these after my friend recommended them to me and boasted about how amazing they were. I had been using Ernie Ball Slinky sets and was still a fairly new player at the time, so I was trying to discover my sound. I put these strings on my Epiphone G-400. Tonally, the strings were pretty responsive and could really sing. However, I didn't like the fact that I had to crimp the wound strings due to the round core wire. It's just extra work, and I hate restringing as it is. Another problem: String breakage. Out of all the string brands I've tried, none of them have been as prone to breaking as DRs. Good tone shouldn't come at the cost of weak strings. Ernie Balls not only cost less, but their overall quality has been superior so far. Sorry, DR.
Bought these on a recommendation from a guy on YouTube and have not had any issues at all. I used Dean Markley Blue Steels for nearly 20 years, but due to lack of availability, was looking for an alternative. The individual who recommended them is a touring professional guitarist. Overall: I've never been one to write reviews however my few purchases at zZounds compels me to. They have enabled me to get top shelf medicinal music gear that I cud never afford without their payment plan. I have 4 deployments to war zones and am retired early now however my credit not to Shiney from a previous relationship. Their no credit check really is a blessing for people like me that have the integrity but not the credit score. Too my point. I never knew strings made such a difference. These elixirs are a little slick but wonderful once you get used to it in about an hour. Every note is very defined and the highs dont hurt your ears and lows and miss are great. I find these strings extremely good if you have ceramic pickups. Just some magic about them. I gave a shot and they improved my sound technique and overall experience with a guitar. I thought I found the magic when I got some Erie ball cobalts. The feel is similar but the sound of the elixirs optiweb are much better. Harmonics come through much better as well. I will definitely be using elixirs for a while until I may find something better in my tone search.Tigger
I usually use 10-46 but bending them requires a bit of effort. I've since changed to the 10/46 Optiweb from the Nanoweb Elixir's and they are so much better. However, I needed a set for a 25.5" scale guitar I'm keeping in E Standard, so opted for the 9/42 to try out. They feel amazing, play beautifully and are very bright sounding. Standard tuning, these are my go-to string from now on.Wayne G
In the past, I've used several non-coated strings (D'Addario XL/XT/NYXL, GHS Boomers, custom brands, Ernie Ball Slinky/Cobalt/M-Steel). Though some were better than others, even the nicer ones like NYXL or M-Steel didn't last as long as I'd like for the price, and the cheaper ones either started with not great tone/feel or got that way too quickly, requiring too often string changes. I had used Elixir strings before (Poly and Nano). Though the Nano were better than the Poly, and had good tone and lasted long, they still felt coated and I didn't love the feel. When these Optiwebs came out, I tried them out. I totally love the feel of them, as they don't even feel coated. They still have the solid Elixir tone and I can leave them on for 3-4 months without losing any tone or tuning stability. Then made the switch to Ernie Ball Hybrid 0946s and that felt better but still felt like a battle when playing faster licks and solos. A friend suggested that I try the NYXL0942. Wow! I felt like I was in a time warp and back to my old self from years ago. These NYXLs have initially withstood my bending and time will tell to see if they are as tough as advertised. Also they feel like I am playing nylon strings so they are a lot more comfortable. Could be the lighter gauge but I think the string design also has something to do with that. The only thing I notice is that they do not ring out as loudly as my previous strings but it does not matter when you plug in. Really glad about these strings and will probably be putting these on all my guitars.MediumSexy
I love the sound of NYXL. They provide me with a pearl like sound that I can use for jazz as well as for heavier sounding music. The strings have qualities that last for a very long time. I usually change my strings every week. I left them for a month on my guitar just to see how they would sound. They sound fantastic… they would lose some freshness after about two weeks but they still hold a great deal of quality after two months playing. They also stay in tune after you pull your strings. Hey you music hounds out there! Give Guitar Center a shot at setting you up with some gear! I also asked if they traded used pedals towards a new pedal and, yes I walked out with a new distortion pedal!! Strings are the lowest around town and in stock. These 3250 nickel plated steel wound fender strings really sound good with the bullet ends (more surface touching the tremolo) and steel is stronger and less likely to break on a large bend and the sound is a little stronger on the pickup I've been playing 30 plus years and tried many string types and this is what I buy!!! I like regular gauge .10-.46 but the choice is yours =JamMan= play till I drop……
The reason I tried these strings (3150R) was because i bought a Telecaster (Baja) in 2007. I read about fret wear being less because it matches the alloy in the frets of new Fender guitars, in comparison to steel strings. Therefore there is the hope it offers less wear and tear on the frets. I had also had problems with the Telecaster 'icepick' sound on the bridge pickup. These strings softened the icepick sound I was getting with steel strings. They last for up to 4-6 months. I think the Tele and nickel string combo is a winner for me. My attitude towards Fender strings changed after this, so I tried the bullets on my Strats. Guess what they were even better with tremelo dives and resistance to detuning. But I thought the pure nickel really affected the sound I got. I like the biting sound from steel strings (GHS Boomers, 10-46) on both a 1970 Stratocaster and a Lace sensor stock equipped 1990 Strat Ultra, so I choose the nickel-plated (3250R) steel strings. Pure joy of sound from both. I had to get a refret on the '70 Strat in 2010, so it was a good move to use these strings to avoid fret wear.

I've been using black beauties for years now. Originally bought them for the look they gave me on my black Tele. They really lasted a long time. And they produced good tone on the instrument. Of course some the coating wore off at the picking area after a few hours of use. Everyone expects that. But you could only tell if you get real close. the fingerboard area stays coated real well. And keeps that slick feel. I don't notice any sound degradation, and the intonation remains constant. And hey Kids, a black majic marker fixes the chipped coating! Just kidding ! Overall: I'm really not that tough to please but these strings are a disappointment to me. I do like the black color, BUT – and I kid you not! – within ONE minute of playing the black was already coming off my high E string and I was playing with my fingers, not a pick! I saw what looked like a piece of fuzz on the string so I started wiping it off, only to realize it's the black color coming off further and further. Within five minutes I had about an inch and a half of bare string showing. It comes off so easy it seems lit it's just spray paint. I understand it won't last forever, but one minute?? Come on. The other thing I don't like about these strings is they have an uneven plastic type feel to them. It's not horrible, but they don't feel like "regular" strings. Other than that they sound OK, nothing special, so I'm definitely not buying these again.Tim
These look awesome and have a very smooth nylon feel. They don't sound bad at all. Maybe a little different I'm sure. They will shed the coating eventually, especially if u use a custom plectrum/pick made of metal or some other highly dense material. Metal will remove the coating immediately! The coating may also slow down the corrosion process. They are holding up good so far. I like these strings. I have a set of white strings somewhere. Those seem hard to find.jcfvintage

I played 3 shows, and 2 practices then Pop goes the B…. 3rd practice, POP goes the A. This is all within 1 month from purchase, and pretty much how regular Slinky's hold up for me. Weather perhaps?… (I traveled from CALIFORNIA to CANADA and played 2 shows…) Faulty pack of these durable non breakables? Geared for those with that feather like angel whisper strumming technique??? I dunno, but do know when I first put on a new set any brand strings… and I mean ANY set I can bend, and dive, strum madly, and create chaotic thunder like all them fancy Axe Slingers Ernie Ball shows wrecking havoc on 'em for a good 10 minutes… What I was looking for was tone, and added longevity, and willing to pay the x-tra normal pack X 2 price…. but, I'm left a bit unimpressed here. Has EB's quality just gone down?… I mean even my regular slinky's seem nothing short of weak… my band's other guitarist is swearing by D'Addarios…. Think I may have to give 'em a whirl… Sorry EB. Oh, and as noted on a prior post the return policy is mailing back ALL strings (Good and bad one's), and EB will then send another pack to you… Why not just be able to go into an authorized ED dealer, and get a new pack??? I purchased these new Paradigm strings just to try them out as I'd heard so much hype about them . My first impressions are they feel and sound great , the easiest way I can describe them is like an up graded set of regular Slinkeys , I tried cobalt strings and didn't like them at all tbh , I've had them on my Gibson SG for over a week now and been playing for several hours every day and they sound really bright n fresh . One thing i've noticed is the tuning stability of the Paradigm strings much Better , my sg has always had a problem of never staying in tune !!! These new strings seem really stable and I hardly stretched them at all when I put them on my guitar . Will they last 90 days and still sound great though ??? My first set lasted 3 1/2 gigs before I broke the D string. This is much better than the average string for my heavy right hand. I play 10's on my Taylor T5. I can't play more than 2 gigs on a regular set period. I will up date and see how my second set goes. Here a run down of my first impression. 1- great feel. Bend nicely for soloing 2- they stay in tune well. Better than average 3- they have an extra wrap, very fine, on top of the regular wrap at the ball end. If you get a lot of strings breaking down at the bridge these strings may help. 4- dissapointed in only 31/2 gigs What strings are better – NYXL or these? Right now the jury is still out. These strings are great, especially for bends. real smooth, and for the price, they last a long time, considering I've never wiped them. I had put them on my guitar for 2 weeks and then I removed them because I wanted to try other strings, still they weren't one bit dead, so I kept them in the packaging they came with. A month later, I put them back on and they still sounded like the day I removed them! Great! It's been a month now and they're still holding up well! The sound is clear and powerful, however, they have more mids, great for soloing but if you're looking for a scooped metal sound, a good eq should sort that out.riffmaster-D_mgZ

My Mitchell MS450 (single cutaway LP style guitar) came with D'Add's, which sounded decent. When I switched them out, I went with the GHS 10's on a hunch based on things I've heard. Great move! Nice, brilliant tone, rings out for eternity if you let them! I have heard that the GHS 9's are really good on Strat style guitars, so GHS might be my go to on my Squier Strat Classic Vibe next string change.Joe
I used 11's from D'Addario for years and I would break a string consistently for every show that I played. I do not know why I kept with D'Addario for so long. I figured I needed to have a heavier string gauge for durability and better tone. Searched around and came across these strings in the heavy gauge, and I could not be happier with them. These strings have great sustain, are durable, do not corrode as quickly as other brands I have used in my professional career playing music, and, despite their heaviness, are easy to play in standard tuning. Along with playing well with a pick and fingers, these strings also sound terrific when playing slide. You can get the same great tones out of these strings that Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have with their lighter gauges, as well as channeling the fat tones that you hear from Duane Allman from the Fillmore East show. Great Garcia tones can come from these strings as well. Basically what I am saying is that you can still get those classic guitar sounds on these heavy strings without feeling like your losing tone or playing opportunities utilized by the players that inspire you who may use lighter string gauges. These strings also (as far as I know) have a round core instead of a hex core. I think that might be a reason why these strings have so much sustain, especially when you have some distortion or overdrive keeping them warm while playing lead. If you are on the fence about getting these, I recommend you give them a try just see how they work for you. They are no that expensive and its worth it to figure out what works for you as a player. I used to use Boomers for about 10 years, on all my electrics (9s). Until arthritis started creeping in. Switched to EB slinky 8s, and playing became much easier. Everything still had a huge sound, but previous order added a test set of the Boomer 8.5s for my Gibson Les Paul goldtop with P90s. Took a while to get used to the rougher feel compared with the EB 8s. But will probably order another set for the goldtop, and a set for my ES295.Joe S.

The biggest selling point for Super Slinky strings is their magnificent tone. There really aren't any strings that sound better than these for hard rock. But as others have noted, they are sometimes prone to premature breakage of the unwound strings at the ball end. It you use a locking tremolo like a Floyd Rose, then this isn't an issue, as you'll be cutting off the ball ends anyway. But for everyone else, he's a trick that I (and many other players) have been using for Super Slinky's ever since the 80's. Just grab your soldering iron and solder the string down where it's twisted around the ball. Just be sure that the twisted part is nicely coated with solder and you shouldn't have any more problems with early breakage. Don't worry, it won't mess up their tone of anything like that… not if you do it right. Try it and see!Rasterburn
These are really nice! They deliver very warm and round tones when playing clean; however, when using overdrive or distortion, the tone becomes pretty monstrous! Because of their thickness, understand they're not made for easy bends and jazzy licks. Additionally, if your guitar is set-up for 9's, or even 10's, you'll need to make slight adjustments in your action, especially if you're using a trem.Shane S.

I have used Ernie Ball Slinkys since I started playing guitar (time that can be measured in decades, that's all I say). I have been through other top brands, and just don't like them. I have gotten to know EB strings to the point where I can nearly predict when they'll break. That's good in my book. The lively tone and intonation stays for a LONG time. And they're good enough to scrape clean and, in the word of Billy Idol, Start Again. Well, that beats boiling them (RIP EVH).
