Overall: I've been a guitarist since the late 80's, but I no longer play professionally, but I do play at home a lot. I've sold off most of my Gibsons (I held on to my '19 Les Paul Traditional) and I'm having a blast with these new Epi models. Everyone is raving about the Standard and the '59 models, and rightfully so. I own both, as well as a new Custom Silverburst and they're all great. This Classic is no exception. It actually arrived needing the least amount of setup work of all the others. The Alnico Classic Pros are brighter and a bit hotter than the Probuckers, but they're not at all harsh. The electronics work as expected, the neck pickup sounds sweet when split and the Phase feature sounds good with some moderate gain. The nut was cut extremely well and the frets don't need really much dressing. The neck is a little slimmer than what I'm used to, but it's easy adapting. The fretboard is a bit dry, but that's normal. Actually, these new Epiphone models all arrived in better condition than most of my Gibsons did in the past. The new Epiphone models are players guitars. Not wall art or collector's (cork sniffers) guitars, I wouldn't hesitate to take any of them to a gig and have fun with them. That's the whole point, right? I just wish they had made import guitars of this quality when I first started playing.Uriah
Out of the box and tuned, this guitar was completely unplayable with the neck so bent that pressing the strings at anywhere beyond the 8th fret fouled the frets higher up the neck, this also meant the action (measured at the 12th fret) was over 6mm. Fortunately I’ve a good understanding of how to set-up a guitar so adjusted the neck to have minimal relief with the truss rod – as a point of interest there was no truss rod allen key in the box, so just as well that I have my own tools. Once the action was set to my preferred settings (and by no means not as low as many like it) I had loads of fret buzz all over the place. So resetting the neck flat and using a ‘fret rocker’ I found 17 of the 22 frets (at various points across the neck) in need of remedial work to get them level. However as the guitar was new I decided initially to just add a bit more neck relief & set the action a shade higher, while I decided if I should just send it back or spending some hours sorting the frets in the near future? There are some positive points! I really liked the ‘worn’ (satin) finish although I feel there should have been a higher discount over the gloss finished versions as this must have saved loads of time during the finishing process. The Alnico Classic PRO pickups sound powerful with loads of variation between the neck and bridge and support coil-splitting. With the coils split option, with push/pull volume pots, there is (as expected) a significant drop in output but they do sound good, verging on P90 territory, rather than Strat/Tele sound ‘alikes’. One of the areas that lower cost guitars usually fail on is the quality of the tuners, here they have fitted Grover Rotomatics with an 18:1 ratio. They are smooth and easy to operate with the large kidney button heads, holding tune very well. The nut, a Graph Tech, was superbly cut, but unfortunately this was completely wasted with the poor quality of fret levelling from the factory as several of the strings would buzz when played open when set at a reasonably low action! The trapezoid neck inlays are very well fitted and although acrylic, do a very good impersonation of mother of pearl. Visually the guitar look stunning with its unusual colour and matt (worn) finish, but I do find the inclusion of gold knobs a bit of a clash with the all Nickel hardware and at the back cream control plate covers just don’t look right and should have been black. But both of these last two issues are a really cheap to resolve at about £12 for both black cover plates and 4 clear knobs. Overall both positives & negatives to consider and if I’d been unable to adjust the guitar myself, there would have been no option but to just send it back for a refund/replacement (hence 3 stars which I think is quite generous) as it is I’ll be keeping this. If I could have bought this locally it would have been great to try before I bought, but my local Epiphone dealer (90 mile round trip) didn’t have any in stock and was unlikely to get one, so I went the mail order route. The guitar is now playing well and will be even better when I get the time to sort out the frets and put a set of 9-42 gauge strings on.Paul
This guitar is absolutely stunning. At about $450 the Epiphone Les Paul Special certainly hits its price point without question. This is the 2nd time I bought this guitar, but I couldn't resist buying this again. I'll start with the cons first, that I noticed applied to both Special's I've owned.. The poly finish is thick. The combination of the "tv yellow" color and the thick polyurethane sort of gives a toy like feeling, or a bit of a cheapness to it.. Speaking of "tv yellow," it's really more of a Dijon mustard/ Carmel color. I don't think that's a bad thing or ugly by any means, but as other reviewers may have stated, the Epiphone isn't quite as accurate to its high end counterpart. The pickup routes and control cavity were also a little bit choppy, but that's just nit picking. If you buy this guitar, you will most likely need a setup. 2nd time around, I knew that going in but both guitars I bought needed set ups. That being said, this guitar is awesome. Surprisingly the laurel fingerboard was really smooth and moist. I do not sense bad or tall frets, but are scratchy at first. The P90 pros are so good. The CTS pots are so dynamic. The volume and tone sweeps combined with these P90 pros are so dynamic and touch sensitive, that they can hang with the best of em. The guitar resonates so well and plays both clean and crunchy top notch. Punchy and warm…Absolute quality electronics. I haven't found a bad tone in any position. If your used to playing your guitars with everything at 10, this guitar with inspire you to play around with all the tonal possibilities by simply rolling in & out your pots. The neck on this is fat, and so nice but not absurd. I highly recommend it. For the price, you can't go wrong and will love the tones, just plan on getting a setup and you will absolutely love this guitar.Zac F

I feel that this bass is excellent value for money. I was surprised by the high quality of the workmanship and materials. Of course it needs a setup to one's preference but that is really only a matter of a tweak of the truss rod, lowering the action and setting intonation. All of this is detailed carefully in the owners manual to assist the diy player or take it to a local luthier for a basice setup. Lots of variation in tones and really fun to play, I'm really happy with it.Tom
I know that I will start an argument with this comment but I'm gonna say it anyway. Why lug around a full size bass guitar when the short scale bass sounds just as good and weighs a lot less. I tried a full size bass and to tell the truth I would have never been able to play a set with it. It was just too heavy for me. Maybe twenty years ago I may have been able to take the weight but not now. I am a guitar player mostly and the full size bass was too much. This bass is the perfect weight, the perfect look and quality, and sounds like a full size bass. It just does. I see a time where the 34 inch scale will wither away and be replaced with the shorter scale bass. It's inevitable. The full size bass has nothing to offer over the shorter scales than maybe cosmetic options. And that will change as time goes on a people realize the advantages of the shorter scale. As a disclaimer I will say that is my opinion. I am sure that full time bass players may have their own reasons for the full size bass.Danny

Guitar was not setup properly had to adjust everything. The cheap Vinyl that's glued on otter edge already pealing. When it arrived there was glue seeping from the edges, didnt realize until I touched it & ruined my $$60.00 gold plated strings. I replaced truss rod cover, junk. Knobs dont match/ugly replaced. Nut was junk, not cut right, made my own in my shop. The glue seepage awful. Removed cheap Vinyl treating guitar to remove exess glue, ridiculous. Huge scratch on back chip on rear bottom of neck where vynil was joined. For the 60th anniversary edition… Worst I've ever seen! My original 59 still looks plays and sounds fantastic. Cutting corners using cheap materials and trying to save money is no way to honor guitars from our past. Sound not that great but I'll have to replace some wiring & tuners as well. stuff to get it to sound halfway decent. I play in a Zeppelin tribute band at all the hotels and in Vegas, definitely not stage worthy! What a major disappointment. Way over priced. My appraisal $80.00 and that's being generous. Someone in the band said we should do one of those early 60's songs. I listened to it, and it clearly had that 12-string jangle so characteristic of the period. The best thing for that is a Rickenbacker 12-string, but I wasn't going to spring for that for just a few songs. So I zeroed in on a few possibilities, including this Danelectro, and the Dean Boca and the Ibanez Artcore in about the same price range. But the Dano is of course pretty much the exact same instrument that they made back then, and it is arguably better now than it ever was. It was always an inexpensive brand, but had the distinction that a lot of famous people played them. Therefore it has that "original vibe", like the Rickenbacker, but at a fraction of the price. So the Dano was the obvious choice, and I got this NOS version (No-S = no S or F hole which some other models have and the originals did). They say it is still made from Masonite, but you can't tell since it is completely painted and while the website says it is laminated, it is very light-weight. And it still has that textured plastic tape around the whole perimeter like it's supposed to have. The neck strap button is in an awkward location, so you may have to cut a piece off your strap to make it fit (I did, and I replaced my strap buttons with Schaller black strap locks). These guitars are made in Korea, and the build quality is excellent. I was afraid that I'd have get a setup, but the one I received has a fine neck with a nice rosewood finger board, has low action and plays easily enough (for a 12-string), so I'm going to leave it as is. The sound is great! It has that unique Dano sound because of the two lipstick pickups. It may be too bright when using the bridge pickup only, but the thing is you get used to the tone really quickly, so it may work just fine. It certainly will cut through the mix! It is louder when using both pickups, which is probably what I will use most of the time. In sum, I'm very happy with it! It will do!Willy
I didn't have high hopes for a 12 string electric at this price point, but I also couldn't resist, and WOW – am I completely satisfied! This guitar plays really well. It came with a good set-up and when I fine tuned it all the systems worked as they should. You can even adjust intonation on all twelve strings. Thus far the neck has been straight and easily adjusts to string or environmental conditions – I've given it a slight adjustment once it acclimated to my desert conditions and since it has been stable and true. Of course I should protect my guitar from the elements, and I bought a gig bag, but it stays out pretty much constantly and is used daily. This guitar is tons of fun. It easily does the Byrds style of 12 string sound. Also, I never knew just how many early Beatles riff where on 12 string until I started messing with this guitar. It's a blast. I own a Rick 6 string and have always wanted an electric 12. This Danelectro is great quality and great fun and it more than satisfies my itch (for now) at fraction of the price. It is close to being a 5/5 guitar for me. It plays very easily with the condition that the back of the neck feels a bit weird to me right now, I have only played it twice though so through playing this might very well go away. It's a maple neck and the back is non glossy which I like but the thin nitro coating they have sprayed it with feels a bit weird under the hand, it's not sticky in the slightest, it's just nothing like I am used to. Might just be me, and as always this should go away with playing. I like the colour and design of the guitar. I like the neck in general, I am not a metal player and thinner necks aint my thang but this neck is thin but also comfortable with it. The pickups are good, I have two Seymour Duncans in my only other *metal* guitar and I am not sure which set I prefer. This one has a JB in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. The 59 is well capable of Bluesy, rock and even Lead Tones. The bridge JB does Lead and can get clear clean tones especially if you roll some tone off on the guitar. I hear some people complain about the harshness or more like the bite of the JB but I think that's unfair. It's true this guitar does Blues, rock and metal well but for modern metal it is in the ballpark but not quite there. It's more suitied to 80's thrash metal than modern stuff and it does all rock well and you can do Blues with it in the neck position. So it's not an out and out metal guitar and so I like it better for that. It is versatile. I play Pink Floyd on it and it sings. Performs well with any type of rock and if you want Metallica early metal tones and onwards this does it really well. I am not much into modern metal anyway so I am not too bothered. I did Motorhead songs the other day and it kills it. The tuners are Jacksons sealed ones or whatever they are ,so not locking as far as I know but it stays in tune really well, maybe because of the floyd rose on it, which works really well. My first ever Floyd Rose guitar and it impresses me with how well it works and not as hard as you think when it comes to changing strings etc. Lastly the price is very good for what you get which is always a selling point for me.And what yiou get is a proper set of Seymour Duncans and a proper Floyd not the cheap ones you get in low budget offerings in a guitar that looks the part, the headstock alone is worth having it for! I got it for 600 quid. Complete no brainer.R O.
In short: for the price this beast is a solid 9/10, overall and realistically it's 6/10. If you are like me and want to get into 7s – this is the one to go with from all the others entry 7s 😉 Neck: I was adjusting it for 3 days, it's almost flat now and I can get really OK action with it, not low like Ibanez but it's just fine. The only problem is 7th string has to be much higher than the others because it's branching on lower frets. Frets are just OK and there is nothing wrong in terms of craftsmanship. I like this neck, it's somewhat fast and I have no problems getting higher up the neck, 26.5 also helps with that and now I'm damn sure 26.5 is something I always needed in my life, period. I rate this neck with 8/10. 9 would go for playability and action, 6 would go to the wood, craftsmanship, ugly fretboard that looks like it didn't get enough laquer or smth, looks VERY dry and unfinished. Tuners: meeeh, they are OK and holds tuning somewhat, I don't really need to adjust it very often which is great. But getting it tuned is like being in a sad and depresive circle of hell, especially with the 7th string. I rate tuners with 4/10 This would be my second phase upgrade. If they didn't hold the tune like they are (kinda OK), rate would be 2/10. Bridge/intonation: not great not terrible, if I decide to replace it, this would go in second phase with tuners too. I had no problems with intonation. In fact, I managed to get it perfectly intonated, you can really hit those high octaves on any string (15th or 17th) and it don't go out of sound, even on 6th and 7th string. I have to see if I could snap some tune-o-matic but I'm afraid I could lose resonation which is already low as f*. I'm ok with the bridge for now, 7/10. Pickups: they don't really "pick up" the 7th 😀 it is kinda muddy but for this price, they really surprised me. They can really pick up hammers and pull-offs nicely (this goes with the neck/frets also). Kinda high output if you ask me, much more than EMG HZH4 for example on my Schecter. These would be my first upgrade, probably Nazgul and Sentinent. I'd rate them 6/10, but for the price 9.5/10, as I said they kinda impressed me, expectations were much lower. Knobs and electronics: metal knobs are very good, and the switch is average, and so is jack, and I don't really have any complaints here. Wood (sound): low-quality wood, it really sucks with resonation and sustain, but again, this is 200-250 price range and it's not like you're gonna buy this guitar to play some Skynyrd or Knopfler 😀 As I got it out of the box I was not very pleased, I mean it's crafted well and looked nice, nothing like that, but as soon I started to play it (unplugged) I got this feeling like I have a wood plank in my lap. Of course, it is expected in this price range. As soon as I plugged it in and started playing I actually started to not care about that too much. So, for this price I am VERY satisfied, it really got me into 7s and I can finally play some older Periphery, Keith Merrow, Whitechapel, even some Vai and Satriani. You can shred very nicely and easy on this guitar, but you need some nerves to make a decent setup first few days since stock setup was disgusting. Strings? I replaced them immediately because the factory strings were a disaster… I put NYXL 10-59, but the bottom string is still not thick enough for drop A, its muddy but maybe it's just the pickups or personal opinion dunno, next time I'm gonna put Elixirs nano 10-56 but will replace that .56 with .062 or something like that. After only 3 days I decided to write an honest review, I cannot dislike this guitar because it really is a beast for this price. It's that good that I plan to invest another 300 dolars just for pickups and tuner. Also, this is my first Jackson ever, and I must express my respect to get something like this for the price of few good weekends outside. In summary: 6/10, for the price 9/10. Go ahead!
I had never played a 7-string guitar before but had been thinking about it for a while so I decided on this Dinky after seeing the price and reading the reviews. I didn't want to spend a ton of money since I didn't know if I would like the 7-string. After having it and playing it for a few days now, I must say that I'm quite impressed. Like so many of the other reviews say, it's set up pretty well right out of the box. I noticed that it is very lightweight compared to my Telecaster, which I really like. Some people mentioned some rough frets but I didn't notice that on mine; it feels really good. It took some getting used to the extra string but I'm really having fun exploring the new sounds I can get with an extended range. The pickups are decent for the price and I'm really happy with it. I may look at changing them out eventually but for now I'm happy with them. I agree with a lot of the other reviews that say that Jackson could easily charge twice as much for this guitar as they do. All in all, this guitar is excellent value for the price. If you're looking for an entry-level 7-string to noodle with and see if you will like it, you can't go wrong here.Madd Dogg

The Peavey Raptor Plus guitars, especially the EXP editions, are very undervalued and underappreciated. Quality components, great necks, wonderful playability. That they can be purchased all day long for less than $200.00…sometimes under a $100.00…is like giving a prospective buyer a license to steal! This guitar is a steal for the money. I pulled it out of the box and I saw no blemishes whatsoever. They packaged it well. And the redburst finish is gorgeous. First thing you want to do is change the strings, when I tried tuning the high E string it broke upon the first turn of the knob. I recommend putting on a set of D'Addario EXL120 strings for this electric guitar, I've been using them for 30 years. If you're looking for a nice electric guitar and amp package for your kid.. you can't beat this.John
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my son who is 12 and learning to the play the guitar. The amp stopped working after 4 months. I called guitar center and the person I spoke with said that he wasn't surprised because it is not a good product and does not recommend it. He wishes guitar center would stop selling it. He said I got what I paid for. He said I would have to contact the manufacturer about the warranty, but he cannot give me their contact information because they do not have it and I cannot find it online. So, here's the thing. I ordered this guitar pack because I had received gift cards from my employer. With no Target store near my town, the cards were stacking up so I bought this set. First off, this guitar is gorgeous! (I bought the Wine color). It played beautifully and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, it arrived damaged. The box was fine, the guitar was damaged in way that QA should have caught somewhere along the lines. I contacted Musician's Friend to see if they would simply send out a replacement guitar and they would have nothing to do with me because I bought it through a third party seller. Then I called Target to see if they could push a replacement from their end. Target support assured me that Musician's Friend would contact me within 48 hours. It's been 3 weeks and counting; still no contact. Obviously this vendor is unwilling to support their product. Shame too as I really fell in love with this guitar the moment I opened the box (except for the damage). Thankfully, Target was willing to reimburse me (back to a gift card) for the return and I went with another supplier. Would I recommend the product? Yes, but only if you can buy it directly from the supplier so they would stand behind it. But without a solid replacement provision, find a different beginner pack.CrashC

Great buying experience! CME does a tremendous job checking the guitar over and making sure it’s totally right. This Fender short run exclusive was exactly what I was looking for! It does what a Jazzmaster is supposed to do … once you take the time to dial in your setup! The setup is a bit tricky for sure because everything has to be balanced and intonated just so to prevent the strings from buzzing on the adjustment screws OR on the bridge itself. It also helps to have the absolute tiniest amount of relief possible in the neck and to raise the bridge and angle it to the sweet spot for ideal string vibration and a high enough break angle to anchor the strings within the slots. Once you do these things and set the pickup height, the guitar truly sings, rocks, plays great, and stays completely in tune, even with serious tremolo arm use! My pickups are set to spec: 3.5 mm on the bass side and 3.2 mm on the treble side. If you aren’t comfortable doing a detailed setup, be prepared to locate a professional. I have set up MANY Fenders so I was able to do it myself in a couple hours of tinkering. The 65 pickups sound amazing! Cleans are shimmery and huge. Dirty sounds are fat and ringing. Perfect for indie and shoegaze styles. You can also roll off the tone for a darker, blues or jazz lead tone and, unlike the original jazzmaster bridge, the strings will stay PUT and allow you to pick hard and bend as much as you like even with 9 gauge. No need for a rhythm circuit in my opinion. This wiring setup keeps it simple, lowers the cost, and still gives you the full Jazzmaster experience. Buy one before they are gone! Love it!Joseph
Mine arrived looking beautiful but had a lot of hum/noise and I figured it had something to do with the pickups or 1 meg pots. I opened it up to shield it and the bridge ground wire was never soldered to the ground wire on the pot. After soldering it I plugged it back in and it was silent. I went from thinking it was ok to being my favorite guitar at the moment. This guitar looks, sounds and plays great and its priced very low too. It nails that classic Jazzmaster tone and does what a Jazzmaster should do. Before you jump into the Jazzmaster pool understand that these guitars require tinkering with. Saddle rattle can be fixed by adjusting the screws on the saddles. They tend to loosen and tighten when changing strings and if they're even slightly uneven they will rattle. Another way to fix this is to shim the neck so there's a slight backbow to it like a Les Paul. This will increase the break angle and put more pressure on the bridge preventing rattle. Using 11's or 12's helps too but the nut on these ones is perfect for 10-46. The 4th position is actually very usable and I find myself using this position more than I thought I would. This is a great guitar at a great price and CME is the gold standard in online purchases. Besides the ground wire mine came set up perfectly and almost in tune. The ground wire was never even tinned so I know it was never attached but again, it took me 5 minutes and 0 dollars to fix. I'm sure had I complained they would have fixed it for me. I bought the Silver Blue Metallic. The Shell Pink was definitely my favorite color but I wasn't secure enough to buy a pink guitar.john g.
I just received this guitar today. There is a lot of negative talk about the noiseless pickups, but it sounds phenomenal to me. Many complaints include that it sounds too "dark", but it sounds terrific through my 1966 Bassman. There is a tremendous range of fantastic tones that are possible with this guitar, but it is definitely not for metal. It gets a great tone for classic rock, alt rock/indie, jazz, funk, and stoner rock. I've gotten a great Gilmour tone to Hendrix to QOTSA, and it honestly doesn't take long to learn the guitar's wide tonal capabilities. The neck plays so well that I found myself inspired to get into new sonic territories and genres. I own a lot of guitars, and this is my favorite one currently. It's my pick over my Les Paul Traditional, Telecaster, Ibanez S Premium, and the others. Do yourself a fiver and try it out with an open mind. Don't listen to the naysayers. This is a VERY solid 7 string. I've tried quite a few brands searching for the perfect intermediate 7 string, both active and passive electronics. So far, the best ones, by far, have been LTD and Schecter, with this one taking the cake (even over an $850 Ltd ec-407). First off, the guitar is beautiful, and the neck feels great. I usually don't like the super-strat body style, but this one has the top curves in all the right places. There is a bit of fret buzz when strummed hard on the low B, but that's to be expected and it's much more manageable than some of the others I tried. If it's a problem, I'd recommend a thicker gauge string set, I like ghs boomers in a heavy gauge (they eliminated fret buzz on a previously owned, less expensive LTD 7 string I owned) The pickups sound incredible, honestly. There are models of this same guitar with Duncan Designed pickups, and that model is slightly more expensive, but I assure you that you're not missing out if you get this one with Schecter Diamond active pickups instead. In fact… I think these sounded better in some applications! Fantastic gain, clarity, and definition, and perfect for metal, they will make your riffs sound brutal… they sound good clean too though! Overall the best bang for your buck 7 string I've tried yet. I've personally owned 5 different ones, but this and the now-discontinued Jackson slathx-m 3-7, which come stock with Seymour Duncan Sentient and Nazgul passive pickups, take the cake for the best I've played.Brian F
I was honestly quite skeptical about the idea of an eight string. A few of my buddies and I decided that, based on the type of music that we wanted to play, an eight string was the right answer. Not wanting to spend a ton on an eight string if I didn't like it, I found this model at a decent price. Needless to say, I was blown away by this guitar. Everything about it is above what I would expect for a guitar of this price point. The neck is very fast with a smooth finish, the action was set up just right, the intonation is spot on, and the correct gauge strings for the tuning we are in were already installed. I was also worried about the neck being much thicker than I would have liked, but Schecter did a phenomenal job with his neck. Another concern that I had was the electronics. In my experience, a guitar that has stock branded pickups has never really been that great. These pickups more than do the job. Eventually I can see switching them out for Fishman Fluence, but they will certainly do for now.Derek
This guitar hits a real sweet spot! If you're looking to get into a seven string on a budget, but want to guarantee you're getting a trustworthy guitar, this is the one! The quality is unbelievably good for the price. For an entry level purchase, you're getting some of the best components that Schecter has to offer; borrowing its design and some features from the iconic Hellraiser series. Side-by-side, the Omen is just as nice – almost indistinguishable in build quality and overall appearance. The guitar also came perfectly set up and ready to play from Sweetwater. Nice low action, fast neck, responsive and strong sounding pickups. I bought this guitar because I was a little hesitant to try some of the cheaper options like Harley-Benton and cheap Jacksons. I do not regret this decision one bit! The Schecter is much classier looking, has a great feel to it, and will likely last a very long time with minimal maintenance. My only real complaint with the guitar is that Schecter switched to a more swirly-patterned quilted maple finish on their newer models and I was hoping for more of the woodgrain / tiger stripe appearance that the older ones seemed to have. It's not a dealbreaker though, the finish still looks great in person! Overall I am extremely pleased. Playing 7-string is so much fun and this was the best way to get involved without risking a huge investment.

Gretch has so many awesome and different style guitars and I have wanted one for a while, I came across this beautiful guitar in Airline Silver! It is stunning! The finishes are impeccable it looks like a 5k guitar Im not even joking. The guitar came setup pretty good but Im very picky, I set the intonation and lowered the action to my taste, and this thing flies! so many great sounds and tone scapes, a very versatile guitar I would pit against any Les Paul, but Im am really happy with the craftsmanship and quality of this instrument. Picked up the case as well. I dont know how you couldn’t be blown away by this guitar. On the last note, Stock tuners seem good no tuning issues. Overall: …at least in my case. I ordered numerous semi hollows from a well known maker, and had to send them all back for poor set up/fit/finish. Finally gave up and ordered this Electromatic Jet, mostly because the quality control got rave reviews and I was just tired of rolling the dice on the 335s. The rumors were true. For the price, this is just a great guitar. Yes, the Bigsby is a little gripey. I ordered some nut sauce and that should take care of it. I've read of some other fixes if it still needs a little love. In the meantime, I take it easy on the Bigs. Gigged with it right away. Looks totally pro and classy to all but total guitar snobs – of which I am one, for sure. So, at that level it's not a total love affair, but I will say that as of right now, I guess rather than saving for a 'real' 335, I'm saving for a 'real' Gretsch. For sheer umph, you can't beat the 335 – I know it – and the down market 335 sounded great – sent it back for having a totally unprofessional nut job. Not to mention fret sprout and truth be told, the finish is just not that good looking. Not to rag on the big E. I have a 339 that's a total gem. But this Gretch – just at the basic level of fit and finish, it smokes the 335s I've been sent. And then just the look of the thing. Heads turn, people gather to check it out. It's just good looking. Not all pretty girls are rich girls. I've heard of people preferring these Electromatics over the Player series. Sounds like a stretch to me, but on a cost/benefit comparison I could totally get that. Playability – it's totally playable, but such a different feel from the LP I usually play, that it was like learning to play all over again. I even got new blisters. It some ways it's actually easier to play than my LP. In some ways, mostly in not having a chunkier neck under my hand, not as enjoyable as the LP. I haven't picked up the Gibby in two weeks. The LP is a better guitar in pretty much every way, but it had better be, right? Then again, one thing it can't do is sound like a Gretsch, and even though I'd rather be playing the high end Jet (mostly for the thicker neck), I feel like I'm getting a good dose of 'Great Gretsch Sound' at a killer price. The Jet has a thinner neck and a slightly shorter scale, but it has a very different feel. It's very easy to play. And feels very well built. Neck feels great. Headstock looks so cool. The neck is not overly thin, objectively speaking. It's got a little meat on it.The Sound – woah! It's spanky! You will cut through! If you are a player who feels a little exposed if your sound is too out front, well, playing this baby is the sonic equivalent of wearing a Speedo with holes. You will be heard. Personally, I'm digging it. I'm used to fighting with PAF style pickups to get my sound out there. Problem solved. No EQ necessary. Don't get me wrong: it's a beautiful sound – smoky and airy and raspy with a ton of vibe and attitude. You can get a wide range of sounds out it, but it's a very different palette of colors for a Gibson guy to get used to. And it's a great palette. The notes come off with an immediacy that is just great. I find myself digging out pedals that I didn't really use with a Gibson. I'm putting away the Marshall type pedals. Pulled out a Fulldrive 3, which is kind of dark with PAFs.Anyhow, not to ramble. The Electromatic Jet is the real deal, the reviews are real – I think you can't count on receiving a good guitar when you order this. Oh yeah, I wanted to mention the volume control sucks… no taper… it's either off, then with a tiny little twist of the knob you are at full volume. Something that I imagine is easily remedied. Having gigged with this guitar now, for a few weeks, I will say this: why are there 3 volume knobs? That is just silly, I'm going to just put in a new Master Volume pot and totally bypass the two other volumes. I don't find myself using the tone knob a whole lot either. Partly because it doesn't really seem to do anything, partly because it just sounds so freakin' good at full knob. Anyhow, like I said, I'm a wicked guitar snob, on something of a budget, and I'm keeping this baby, and loving it.Many salaams and hat tips and thank yous to zZounds. Or is it zZounds? I'm an experienced player and musician having been playing for the last 15 years and being in multiple bands. This is my first Gretsch guitar as I am more of an Epiphone fan, however I am a huge Nick 13 and Tiger Army fan and as you know this is his signature model so I couldn't help myself. The guitar itself is beautiful and plays like a dream. I'm a Punk musician however I dabble in Psychobilly, Rockabilly, Ska, and Reggae and this guitar has no problem adapting to any style of music. The bridge pickup is nice and bright with the perfect amount of twang you would expect from a filtertron. The neck pickup and smooth, warm, and most importantly satisfying. However, a few days ago my toggle switch unfortunately went out and I can no longer switch between the bridge and the neck pickup. I bought this Gretsch in December and while it isn't 100% "new" anymore I am very gentle with my toggle switches so it is a bummer that it is already on the fritz. I'll be bringing it into my local GC to have the technician (Josh) to look at it and see if we can get her back into 100% working order. The other negative that I have is that the fret ends are a little sharp but that is an easy fix. Overall I am extremely happy with my Tiger Jet.Michael, C.

I picked up the Irish Ale model on the stupid deal of the day last Thanksgiving. After getting it and seeing the quality, I'd have gladly twice as much. It's just beautiful, solid, and plays very nice. The neck humbucker is warm and rich. The bridge HB screams on leads when overdriven. When you tap them for single coil, you can get good crisp sparkly tones too, though the volume drop naturally is noticeable. I just have a pedal boost setting for playing it in single coil mode that brings the volume up to the HB level. The guitar intonated exceptionally well right out of the box and playability is top notch. It has the best bridge design I have ever seen or played on a solid bridge guitar. They hit a home-run on that. It's a great upgrade platform too, since the body, neck and bridge are made so well. I'd put the stock Gagon designed pickups right on par with Gibson OEM humbuckers, but they are not as good as Lollar's or Fralin's. The tuning machine heads are very usable, but an upgrade to Schallers, Grovers, or Gotohs makes sense if you play a lot. It does not have a bone nut, but the tone and intonation on mine is so good, I'll probably just leave the stock nut in.Birddog
It's rare to find low-cost gear that meets high-level expectations, but this guitar has thus far done just that. I purchased this thinking I would almost certainly have to put a fair amount of work and parts into it just to make it playable; off the bat, I assumed the pots and wiring would have to be replaced, the bridge would likely be of poor quality, the setup would be unusable, and the tuners/nut would have problems. For the vast majority of these, the opposite has been true. The pots and electronics (switch, jack) are incredibly solid, quiet, and smooth. The bridge is solid, no rattles, and intonates very close to perfect. The setup out of the box was dead on; shocking, for a guitar made overseas and at this price range. The one area where the jury is still out is the tuners and nut. There are a few occasional tuning stability issues, especially on the higher strings. This is likely due to a bad nut, so I've ordered a Tusq replacement to see if that helps. The tuners also seem to have a little more throw than I'm used to, and aren't as precise as I'd like. That said, they're still fine and I'm not going to hesitate to gig with this guitar. The look of the guitar in person is, in my opinion, nicer than what you see here. I think it's a beautiful guitar, if not a little plain. The neck is a glossy yellow, which some folks might not like, but I don't care what it looks like. The profile is a bit chunkier than the previous Telecasters I've owned; most comparable to the Baja series, though a bit smaller than their V-shaped cuts. Just a solid feeling neck. Lastly, the sound. This is where this guitar shines. These are some of the best vintage-sounding P90's I've used, and I've played more than I care to remember, many from expensive boutique winders that we're all familiar with. This is not a guitar for clean, crystal clear tones. It's overdriving my amps right away, in a very good way. All in all, a great axe at a surprisingly low cost. G&L did right.Good Eye, Brian

Overall: Having had a Peavey Wolfgang and an Evh Wolfgang when they first came out, I knew I loved the hardware and the neck so I figured this would be the same with a new look. With the addition of a kill switch, I figured this would be a perfect guitar for many styles. I knew I would want to put it through my tremonti MT15, Mesa road king, Mesa tremoverb, orange Micro Terror and Yamaha THR5 to see which styles this is suited for and which it is not.Right off the bat I was very happy with how the matte finish felt. The neck is incredible as well, as I expected. And having spent a lifetime of using the volume knob go from clean to dirty as Eddie did I appreciated the volume knob being so easy to turn.I was very happy with the sound of the pickups. I know that Eddie has been through many pickups throughout the years. These are very good, and seem to work well for everything. Not too hot and just the right bit of midrange. Nitpicks are that it doesn’t come with a bag or case. And Eddie liked the pickup selector reversed, which this one does not. But that is a small fix. And something about the finish just looks cheap. Maybe that is just something to do with the purple daze finish….
Very impressed with this guitar. The neck has a great feel and well set-up for playing fast and note bends, especially in the upper register. Sustain is impressive for a sub £1k guitar and there is probably enough grunt from the factory pickups for most players. The low friction volume and high friction tone are a nice thing to have and am considering adapting my other working guitars with this. Using the D-Tuna was a learning curve as you can't use the fine tuner once set at drop D (well, you can tweak the tuning on the D-Tuna itself once set in the standard tuning position). If you don't fancy using it you can always swap it out with the supplied kit. The kill button is fun and I'm sure I'll get good use of it in time but I do keep brushing it when hammering out funk rhythms. Possibly due to my large hands but worth noting that if you splay you strumming hand when playing, you may end up with a scuff bruise or two. Great guitar. Plays like butter. My biggest problem is that the Floyd Rose bridge goes out of tune every time I use the tremolo ( actually comes out of the body). Even with me buying the protection plan I keep getting told that my only option is to pay more money and get the bridge replaced and re-setup. Very disappointed with this whole experience.Kevin

Overall: I can't believe there aren't any reviews of this guitar yet!I have the Burgundy Mist version of this with the pao ferro fretboard which, sadly, zZounds no longer carries. It's pretty, really pretty, and it exudes a seriously vintage vibe. (I saw an antique Burgundy Mist Chevrolet last week and I immediately thought of my feisty little Fender.)The hardware; bridge & tuners, is your standard MiM Fender quality. They're more than up to the task. The Strat-style bridge makes this an easy guitar to keep in tune. (I once had a 1978 Mustang and keeping it in tune was a nightmare that not even Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft could imagine.)The MP-90 pickups are capable of so much that it I could fill a whole page trying to accurately describe them. They are beefy enough to really drive a good tube amp. (My main amps are a Marshall DSL1 and Vox AC4-C112.) On a clean setting the neck pickup on its' own isn't particularly impressive, kinda dark, but the middle and bridge positions are really versatile if you tweak the volume and tone controls.With distortion, in my case a Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion (it's more of a gargantuan fuzz than a distortion pedal), all three positions sings with a tone that would make Leslie West smile broadly.I'm not a big guy (5'9", 150 lbs) so the small offset body and short scale neck are really comfortable.There is only one real drawback to this marvelous axe but it's something that shouldn't for even a second dissuade anyone from adding this guitar to their guitarsenal, and that's the pickup selector switch. It's junk. It cuts out and is rather staticky (is that a word?). It's a cheap piece of junk but it usually works so I can deal with it. (And you can as well.) I'll eventually replace it but there's no need to right now.My particular specimen had a truly beautifully grained pao ferro fretboard, with the frets being smooth and very well dressed. I love a big monstrous tone and this little wonder genuinely delivers.(Fender's prices have gone up since I bought mine but this particular axe is an absolute joy to play and for the price is still a true bargain. It loves, LOVES, full six-string power chords so if you're in a Mountain tribute band then you'll find a lot to like in this guitar.)I am first and foremost a "Telecaster guy" but I love pulling out this little dude and blasting away like Han Solo in a cantina full of Greedos.I've gone on for far too long here but it's only because I really, really like this guitar.[In my 'stars' rating I give this guy five stars in the 'manufacturer support' column because I own a bunch of Fenders and have never had a problem.]Mark
This is a great entry to the Fender lineup and a step up from Squier quality. The craftsmanship is far from perfect however. Nut slots not quite cut deep enough, fret slots cut a little too deep in places and sharp fretboard edges. That's about it as far as shortcomings though. The guitar looks killer in Burgandy Mist and it sounds just a good with the P90 pickups. The Pau Ferro fretboard compliments the looks and mine almost has a tiger's eye 3D effect going on which is an unexpected bonus. The 24' scale, modern C neck profile with satin finish on the back, combined with the medium jumbo frets and a 9.5 inch radius all contribute to an almost effortless playing experience. My one has a slightly heavier body that others I've tried which I'm very glad of as it eliminates any sign of neck dive that can plague these guitars (probably not helped by the oversize headstock). The guitar sounds fantastic clean with the P90s sitting somewhere between a single coil and humbucker and just as good with overdrive. The pickups are also not as noisy as I'd feared so you need not dread the hum. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this guitar and since I'm happy to file my own nuts, as it were, a little tweaking to ensure perfect playability doesn't worry me in the slightest. It's a keeper for sure.

I sat down with the Ibanez AF75 at Guitar Center for over 3hrs. I had traded in a guitar and wanted a jazz/blues machine. I had come in with the Ibanez in mind, but also I had my eye on the Epiphone Wildkat, and the Epiphone Dot. I liked the tone of each, but I kept coming back to the Ibanez. Overall, the build on the Wildkat was poor; it couldn't stay in tune even without using the tremolo. I have owned several Dots over the years and had the same problem with each, the necks broke when adjusted, not by myself, but by 3 different luthiers. The Ibanez just has this warmth to it. Unplugged it sounds like every other semi hollow, maybe a bit tinnier, but plugged in, it just sings. This is perfect for blues/jazz/rock/ or in my case, being in the worship band at church. Do yourself a favor, go to Guitar Center, tune one up, and sit with it for 15min on your favorite amp, just a little overdrive and some reverb, and you will see exactly what I mean. Fantastic instrument. Unbelievable price for this quality. Mine stays in tune like a champ. Minor adjustments every few days. Can't believe it.Davetheworshipguy
Overall: I just got this 3/27/2018, after my Gretsch Streamliner was stolen by a FedEx driver a week earlier and marked it as it was delivered and it was not. but when I followed up a couple days later. I was told by a zZounds customer service rep, that the driver told them he had lost it? So I bought this Ibanez and it is indeed blemished at the neck pocket, just a hair line crack in the finish not the support foundation. the guitar has a very nice acoustic tone and the pickups sound good as well. I recommend prepping the neck nut and the intonation bridge or your strings will not slide smoothly and will hang up and you will be out of tune. the electronics meaning the volume/tone, Input jack and 3way toggle are very cheap but work with a little noise when turning the controls. being in the wholesale / retail business zZounds is paying less than half what it is being sold for in most cases. buy it blemished and save a few dollars…it is a good instrument, plays well and sounds good and I will take it to my next Jazz gig.Chuck
I bought a used (maybe five years old) model of this guitar. Changed the strings and that was that. Can a used Chinese made guitar become a favorite? Yes it can. Yes it has. The construction and finish details on this guitar are at a level of the best American Fenders I have played. Vastly superior to the recent Gibson's, which are, in my view, a disgrace. Set up properly this guitar is very comfortable with no issues such as bridge, nut or tailpiece problems. I am truly amazed. The pickups are not great but with proper amp EQ it will make some very warm music for you.jazznotes

Overall: This guitar was sold as blemished. The actual blemish on the guitar was on the back of the body. I very small pin hole like indent, maybe 2-4mm. Almost ingenious. What I mean by that, is that is saved me 200.00 dollars and when you notice it, it looks kind of cool. Hard to explain, maybe a relic touch or something. Besides that, I can’t help but loving this guitar, for its simplicity, good taste and the extra birds on the fret board and lightness. Overall: This guitar is amazing. It plays well right out of the box. The neck is smooth and no sharp frets. The pickups sounds great. I play a mix of rock, metal, and Jazz and it can handle all of those no problem. I love that you can split the coils on the pickups. It really gives you a wide range of tones.John
Overall: This rating is for the instrument itself, not zZounds. Their customer service is amazing and unparalleled. I've been waiting for the release of the Holcomb SVN for some time now. The finish is great, it's beautiful, the fretboard and neck are beautiful, the pickups are great. The flat radius fretboard is insanely comfortable! Unfortunately, there are an equal amounts of negatives. The nut is garbage. It's plastic, very sharp, and has slag hanging off of it everywhere. I doubt very much that it's properly shaped or set. It has made tuning impossible. The tuning machines themselves are also extremely low quality and seem to have a gap in the gearing, which also makes tuning a very aggrevating process. The low A# string seems impossible to intonate correctly, the saddle is maxed out and it's still registering extremely sharp. This is all in the tuning and string gauge that Mark plays in so… quality control seems to be an issue with these first run Holcomb SVN's. All in all, an extremely beautiful guitar for a ridiculous price while PRS's competitors build far better instruments in the same budget. I would return this if alllowed.Dayne

Buying guitars online always seems like a crapshoot. I have had good, bad, and horrible experiences. This guitar, oddly enough, has been the only guitar that I have bought that has needed no further setup at all. It was totally perfect. Everything. And this is after buying a Majesty and a Stratocaster which did need additional setup. No complaints whatsoever. I rarely feel the need to write a review, but the quality of this PRS definitely deserved some comments. Only thing that was a little different was the scale length which I had overlooked. 1/2" shorter than many of my other guitars. This makes it extremely easy to play, but getting up to 22-24 frets… well, ya gotta squish your fingers a tad.Steve
I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and I have to say it doesn't look, play or feel like a $500 guitar. I was immediately impressed by the quality and comfort of this instrument. I have a couple of Les Pauls and a G&L and this thing is at least a couple of pounds lighter than any of them. The body has an extremely compact feel and the cut and shape make it comfortable to play anywhere on the neck. The neck itself is comfortable and fast. The pickups have a warm, full tone with a nice amount of growl with a little overdrive. Many guitars in this price range have weak, tinny sounding pickups, but not this one. On the downside, it's a bit of a challenge to keep in tune. But, that's common of many guitars in this price range that don't come equipped with locking nuts and trems. I'll change and stretch the strings and lubricate the nut and do all the normal things and we'll see how it comes out. Also, the neck seems to pick up a slight twist every couple of days and I've had to adjust the truss rod several times. Hopefully, I'll get it just right soon and this won't be an ongoing issue. I've never played a PRS before and this was an affordable way for me to dip my toe in that pool. I'm glad I did. For $500 you can't go wrong with this one.nowalruses
An absolutely brilliant guitar for the money. The finish is excellent, the setup was perfect out of the box. Frets are nicely finished, nut is cut well, strings feel nice, tuners work well, switches are smooth. Honestly the only things that do not feel like they could be on a much more expensive guitar are a small amount of play in the tremolo arm, and a small amount of play in the tone knob (with coil tap). For less than £500, this is a beautiful instrument – huge tonal diversity with the humbuckers and coil split, and plays exceptionally well. I haven't played in a few years but the pandemic had me searching for something to get my mind off working crazy hours. There would be few guitars I'd buy sight unseen but I rolled the dice because I'd played Martin's first backpacking incarnation and was familiar with their quality. This little guitar wouldn't disappoint! It is a smaller scale but my fingers fit on the fret board and it's easy to just leave out and pick up when you need it. The sound is really good for the size and it's easy to strum or pick. It was exactly what I was looking for but a little more. I honestly didn't expect to be this happy with how much guitar I got for the price. If you need something to stick by the desk or play by the fire, this is a good optionBob
it arrived yesterday to romania, from music store germany (thanks for handling it with so much care!) and i laid my hands for the first time on this loveable tiny beauty. it looks amazing and feels amazing, in every aspect. excellent playability all thourghout the neck, right out of the box… i wanted a travel buddy — small, sturdy, light and playable… and here she is. there are a lot reviews on the net, i will let here my own subjective opinion, after one day of having it (shipped from music store, germany). – i'm a tall guy (6 feet 3 / 190 cm), but the smallness of martin lx1 is not a hindrance in playing. my wife is a mongolian petite, so perhaps I'm used with handling small beauties 🙂 – i have big hands, but not thick fingers. if i stretch my fingers i can cover this guitar's neck from the net to the 10th fret (from pinky to thumb stretched out) — so you can have a clue; however, i feel comfortable playing all over the neck, even past the 14th fret. so no problem with that… and the transition back and forth to my normal-sized acoustic fender pm1 or to my electric squier affinity tele feels smooth, adjusting in no time. – the guitar is neck heavy, but it doesn't bother me at all; you see, it sits comfortably in my lap. – well, of course, the sound is not of a normal-sized guitar — one has to live with that. it is somehow a boxy sound, but martin has a lot of character, so i'm quite pleased with the sound. the guitar seems to suit better for fingerpicking or strumming with bare fingers; when i use my pick it's too noisy, especially the d string is sooo loud, taking over the other strings. in know, it's a new guitar, freshly out of its box, so perhaps it needs time to shape its sound. if this will not happen (due to hpl back and sides) i will still be pleased, the sound is good enough and i can work my way around. – the machine heads are of excellent quality (like every aspect of this guitar, actually): i tuned the guitar yesterday, after taking it out of the box, then forgot about it… summing up: craftmanship — state of the art sound — boxy, you may like it or not (martin has character, a distinct voice, above all) optic — beautiful as it gets, simply perfect price/performance — well, i would have loved to pay less… in the states, it was 399 USD until recently, now it's more expensive and perhaps the price will rise as well in the current covid situation; so buy know, don't postpone if you consider having one.
I played a friend's dreadnaught sized Martin and fell in love. I already owned two other guitars at the time (Samick and a Fender Redondo Player acoustic) and I didn't want to spend the money in a Martin at this time. This happened to pop up as a stupid deal of the day and so I bought. I wasn't sure about the laminate at first, but it feels and plays like a well made guitar. It sounds bright and it is a tone I enjoy hearing. If someone had given me advice as a new player I would have wished they told me about this guitar. It is concert size so it is a little smaller than a dreadnaught. It is easier for me to practice barring chords and doesn't feel as awkward on my body as my dreadnaught. I love both guitars, but I definitely still use this one as I advance as a player. I noodle on it when I am watching tv, take it when I go way for the weekend, and bring it to play for my friends. Couldn't find this guitar in the stores so I pulled the trigger and ordered online. I don't listen to Rancid, so I bought this guitar more because it's a baldwin-era gretsch with a cool finish and filtertron pups. The pickups are crisp and clear and take dirt well, love the control over tone with all the knobs. I am impressed with these blacktop pups. They sound very close to the hs filters in my 5120. I see no need to change them. The top is thicker than my 5120, binding all over the place, beautiful headstock and wider body. The action was high and I set the intonation, but otherwise no work needed. Here's the thing, the flat finish does wear off leaving shine spots where your arms and hands come into contact. Like on the neck and upper body, and where I rest my pinky or fingers while picking. It looks cool to me but something you should be aware of before buying. Tuning is pretty stable, never seems to go way off. Body is balanced and neck plays smooth and fast. Love thJesse
