I bought this amp to have a small, cheap portable amp to play harmonica through. For that, it is decent enough. I use a Shure bullet mic and the amp produces good enough tone and is plenty loud for practice or small gigs. When I plug my tele into it the clean channel is decent and clear, but the overdrive channel is junk and hurts my ears. I would rather run the clean channel and use a fuzz or distortion pedal. So that being said it is decent enough to practice licks on and it is tiny so it tucks away easy. If you look around you can find a bigger amp with more features used for the same price but if you want a new amp, this one is probably worth what they charge for it. I would only buy it if you have a specific purpose for it though.Roy
It's small, and pretty portable. However, the sound quality is trash, given the speaker is tiny, but the overdrive is just horrible. If you buy this, try returning it. If you can't return it, just get a fuzz pedal and leave it on clean. Imo, just buy the mustang lt25-50Hotdog Games
I actually bought it 4 years ago, but realized I never wrote a review. It's surprising how light it is, almost felt like a toy. That being said, it's sturdily built, just very, very lightweight which is quite nice. I do mostly clean channel playing, not really much into heavy rocking much anymore. For clean channel playing, this little amp has a great sound. It puts out quite a bit of volume. I have used it playing for church and was more than enough volume to be heard with folks singing. The distortion is just okay, which is what kept me from giving the amp a 5-star review. But, most folks who want to rock out, probably aren't going for a 10-watt amp anyway. The distortion is decent enough for use in practice or playing along to your own music collection.

It is a great amp. Very good sound and options for the price. It is not heavy which is a big deal to someone who has had back surgery. I gave it a 5 in spite of one big complaint. When you turn it off you hear a loud "POP!" Wow, is that loud is what I thought the first time I heard it. I read about it online and there is a simple fix. Find an old set of ear phones or ear buds that you would use on a cassette player or a Sony Walkman. (Yes, these are ancient electronic relics from the past for you younger people. You might ask your parents if they have a cassette player and borrow the ear plugs.) Just plug that earphone jack into the "PHONES" input BEFORE you turn it off. THEN you only hear a little blip when you turn it off. THEN just pull the jack out of the "PHONES" input before you start it next time.chasmigu
This amp is better than I thought. I've had it for over a year. I use it for practice sessions (classic rock mostly), and I haven't gone over '4 1/2' on the volume (it does give good feedback if you want it). I did upgrade the speaker to a 12" 'Celestion' Vintage 30 and am absolutely happy! This could easily be mic'd for larger venues. Lightweight, powerful enough, and the effects are a good assortment. One small glitch…when using the footswitch, there is a short, instantaneous volume boost when the pedal is pressed for distortion. Could possibly be a problem for recording. Every guitar player on God's green earth should have one. The different tones offered with the app inspire you to play differently. It allows you to play along with the songs you love, and download the tone. It also tells you the chord progression to the song. It's an amazing Amp, and if nothing else the GREATEST speaker in the world. I could absolutely ruin my neighborhoods night with the most absurdly clear version of my favorite songs. But I could Also practice at midnight with out waking up my roommates using my headphones.

As a practice amp, you will soon lose interest if the tone is thin, boxy and generally sounds like crap. The Spark is none of this. An incredibly wide range of tones are available via the app with sounds that you just don't expect to come from such a small package. The sound is loud, rich without the boxiness that you seem to get with amps loaded with small speakers. If you've used PG's Bias software, you'll be in very familiar territory – great emulations that have a depth that rivals some of the serious modelers available now. The effects, while not giving you a massive selection, supplies pretty well every type of effect you would ever need. The reverbs and delays are particularly good and while more than good enough for noodling at home, are more than up to the task of recording. The unit is quite sturdy with a timber cabinet and looks great – very traditional with an "English" type of styling. Using the Spark as a Bluetooth player for music is more than up to the task – good bass, clean mids and treble and loads of volume. The app overall is very good with some truly inspiring practice opportunities, though the function where the app analyses your playing and constructs a suitable backing track is hit and miss and is probably the weakest part of the app. Bluetooth connection for both control functions and audio playback is stable and very quick to pair with your device. Overall, I don't think you will find and amp sounding this good with the flexibility and functions available, from anywhere else and that is before taking into consideration, the extra functions the app gives you.Mick G.
I bought this amp on the back of all the rave reviews on YouTube etc. For me, it's just not a finished product yet. It feels very "beta". The hardware seems robust and of good quality. The modelled sounds are very good, albeit very bass heavy. But most of that can be EQ'd out. There are several problems I couldn't live with, and had to sell it on. The hum problem which is due to the supplied, un-earthed PSU was very apparent in my example. I contacted Positive Grid support about the issue in December 20, and as of selling the amp at the start of March 21, I had not yet received the replacement PSU. There are temporary workarounds, but I wanted the problem sorted permanently. As said above, the sound is very bass heavy. The amp models' EQ can be used to deal with the guitar tone, but music playback through the unit via Bluetooth has no EQ control, so the sound quality is very poor. In addition to this, the playback level is far too high. When using as a Bluetooth speaker it is very difficult to get the volume low enough using the tiny trim pot volume control for comfortable listening when sat in close proximity to the unit. The Auto Chords feature is a gimmick and needs serious work. It only works for E standard guitar tuning. For example, when listening to a song in dropped standard tuning such as "Yesterday" (guitar tuned down one whole step) Auto Chords will show fingerings for F, Em, A7 etc instead of the G,. F#m, B7 shapes that are required. At the very least, a "transpose" button is required to allow for dropped standard tunings that are very common. When using the tuner, you have to look at the lights on top of the amp. The app should have a screen that displays the tuner on your connected device when in use. The app metronome tempo can only be set by tap. It should have the ability for the user to enter the exact required BPM by inputting the figure required, or selecting the tempo with up and down or + and – controls. All of these niggles were too much for me to live with. Hopefully Positive Grid implement the changes in future releases, but I won't be buying Spark again until they do.Paul

Having been messing around with an acoustic for far too many years I decided to treat myself to an electric, and started the search for an amp. I had a few options but went with the Crush 20RT and haven't regretted it. For its size the sound quality is great, and the eq controls allow you to get a nice range of distinct tones. Having the dirty volume away from the gain dial takes some getting used to, but isn't a deal-breaker, and if you find the rather small switch to swap between clean and dirty channels a bit fiddly, you can pick up a foot switch which connects nicely on the back of the amp. Built in reverb is nice, but if you are big on using reverb I'd imagine you'd want to get a dedicated pedal. Tuner seems hit and miss, and again more accurate results will be obtained via a stand alone product. Both good features to have, especially as a starter amp. Overall, highly recommended!Kevin E.
This is definitely the best sounding practice amp I've ever used. The gain channel has several different levels of gain, all sound great. Anywhere from a slightly crunchy overdrive sound to sizzling distortion. I've never had an amp this size handle metal tones so well. The clean channel handles distortion pedals well and maintains the tone of the amp, and if you wanna add a little something extra, putting an overdrive in front of the dirty channel really pushes the mids through. All very impressive for an 8 inch speaker.

Now let me first state that Guitar Center is the only place I'd buy this from, to try it out and return it to the store. Guitar Center is the BEST. This little amplifier is the WORST. I bought this specifically for it's cabinet output and the fact that it can run on a 9 volt battery. I own four other mini amplifiers, two of them are pedals and the other two are Blackstar Fly 3 (with the extension cabinet.) Here's the crux of my review: The Blackstar Fly 3 is louder and sounds far better than the Orange Crush Mini, even if that Crush Mini is powering a larger speaker cabinet (a 2×10, in this case.) So yes, two 3" speakers in the Blackstar are louder, and the sound quality is far superior to the Orange Crush Mini driving a 2×10" cabinet. The Crush Mini's 3" speaker is unusable, sounds very tinny and is very low volume. Now, I also have two pedal amps that run on 9 volts, an Electro Harmonix 5mm and a VHT Redline 6. The 5mm is amazing, and the VHT is very good also. So if you want to drive a cabinet with a pedal size amp you can put in your pocket, try the Electro Harmonix 5mm. The VHT Redline is also very good and has the added features of an aux in jack and headphone out jack. An adapter cable to use a battery can be had (I have a few of them.) Avoid the Orange Crush Mini, the Blackstar Fly 3 is far superior.John

This amp is fantastic. For someone that is so used to having different modellers, tube amps, multi fx and stompboxes this is now all I need. I've been meddling with allsorts kf gear for 17 years in my search for tone. I feel I am now at the end. Managed to dial in 4 very usable great sounding patches in minutes just using the front panel, something I've not been able to do with any amp or modeller in a while. It djents, it can do blues crunch, it can do straight rock grit, chimey clean, and just big standard chuggy metal very well. It's quite light, but when you turn up the volume you can feel air moving, like you can with a much bigger cab or with a valve amp. For a 1×12 it isn't boxy at all, very open sounding. The Waza speaker is very harsh in the top and highs to begin with when you first switch it on, but after a few hours use the speaker breaks in and the harsh highs all disappear. For someone that has always used Celestion V30's this Waza speaker is just amazing and I'm definitely leaving it as is! The dynamic response to picking and rolling your volume knob down is just how a valve amp responds – light picking = cleaner tones. Dig in with your pick and the amp comes alive. Fantastic all round amp, Boss really have nailed it with this one.
Just picked one of these and it's been a joy to play. Pretty easy to use with quite a few options. Was able to dial in some tones that sound like my $800-1k tube amps. Honestly this amp is the best bang for your buck amp available imo. I really love the Waza Craft Greenback speaker. I love the .5, 50,100 watt options. Haven't even explored the software yet but I'm confident enough in this amp to give it a 5 star already. This of course is keeping in mind the fact it's essentially a budget amp price. Sound: Right out of the box? I didn’t even adjust EQs. Set volume and gain, and started playing. Took 0 effort to get 98% of the way to my live tone that is an Orange Rockerverb 100W MK2 and Marshall 212 with V30s. Features: I love the Tone Studio. I did have to pull a star from Ease Of Use because it may be confusing if you’re not good with computers. Ease of Use: If you can’t get a good sound out of this amp, return it, sell your guitars, and find a new hobby. That’s how easy getting a good sound out of this is. Quality: Seems pretty decent. I wouldn’t call it robust, but it doesn’t FEEL as cheap as the price would suggest. Value: 100% worth the price. I’d have paid $100 more for it if I’d have known how good it would sound. Manufacturer Support: I’ve dealt with Roland/Boss in the past, and they’ve always been wonderful. The Wow Factor: Looks good, sounds good, price is good. A perfect practice amp, that could stand in for a small venue in a pinch. Naturally my live rig is a bit much for my apartment, but this is just what the doctor ordered. Overall: Solid state amps have come a long way. A REALLY long way. I’ll be honest, being a tube snob, I had very low expectations. Going back and forth between the LT25 and LT40s to compare identifical presets, both sounded good and similar even with the differences in cabinet and speaker size. A subjective impression is that the LT25 sounded a bit more distant or maybe dispersed. The LT40s sounded a bit more focused. It was a tough call as the LT25 is less expensive but I walked out of there with the LT40S. For desktop placement and low volume practice, the LT40s sounds great and with plenty of low end. I don't need loud volume but this amp can fill a 16'x24' loft with sound. The USB connection to my laptop was initially a no go. After deleting and then reinstalling the application, it has sinced worked great!Wally
I wanted an amp for practicing that gave me a massive range of options for a reasonable amount of money. I have to say that I am very impressed with the 30 included presets and I've not even branched out into the additional ones you can add. The quality of the LT25 is fantastic, not super heavy and all the switches feel robust. I've found the sound can vary depending on the preset you choose though that is to be expected with those that have high gain. I mostly play clean and blues and this amp is fantastic for both of those. If you want a more classic rock sound there is a preset for this which I think needs a bit of tweaking. All in all very impressed and as this is my first Fender amp, I will definitely be getting another in the future.Alex G.
This is my first amp and as a beginner guitarist it has everything I need. Initial set up is as easy as pulling it out of the box and plugging it in. The built in presets all sound amazing and are easy to switch between, if you arent super techy and dont want to fiddle with the online fender tone aspect of it all the provided presets are enough to give you just about any tone you could want. It gets pretty loud for its size I dont think Ive cranked it higher than 1/2 way in respect for my neighbors. The headphone jack is also great because it always me to play silently into the night without disturbing those around me. Its super light as well and has a handle on the top of the amp so its easy to move around. It seems pretty durable, I obviously havent gone kicking it off a stage or anything but it should withstand a curious puppy or rambunctious child tripping over it a few times. Overall its a great option that doesnt break the bank if you just need something a little more travel friendly or are a first time player like me. My favorite thing about it is how many sound options it has laid out built in or online because I didn't immediately have to dump $1000 on pedals to get the sound that I wanted. (For reference I've been playing my Ibanez Gio GRX70QA with this amp just attached by a Fender original series 10ft cable)

Overall: This amplifier absolutely rocks! With so many options you can dial in any sound that you want, from crystal clear clean to roaring rhythms and screaming leads. As everyone has already said, the reverb is almost nonexistent. However, the amp, tubes and build are rock solid. BUT… if you really want to blow your mind, swap out the speaker with one that fits your style. My style is classic hard rock so after much research I swapped out the 70 watt Celestion V-Type speaker that it comes with for a 150 watt Eminence Swamp Thang and I swear that it sounds as loud and ballsy as my full-on DSL100 full stack with 1960 cabs. The difference is mind boggling. No fizz, no speaker distortion at all. Just a loud, clear representation of my sound. Obviously the Swamp Thang might not be your speaker of choice but do your research and this will be the only amp you will ever need again!Scott
Sound: With good tubes properly biased, yes. Features: One feature that I absolutely detest is the effects loop button. When it is activated the front of the amp ceases to operate and when deactivated, the front works but the effects loop deactivated. There's no reason for this feature to exist. Substantially limits what the user is able to do. Bad decision in the design. Ease of Use: Just need to fix the owners manual to include specifically how to bias the tubes. Value: At the time I bought it, it was around $800. So at that time, yes. Overall: It took me a while for this amp to grow on me as it sounded like crap out of the box. I replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion V30 and replaced the stock tubes with Ruby EL34STR and a 5751 in the PI as is my typical configuration. Still couldn't get an acceptable tone was fuzzy and grindy. Years later, I learned that you can self bias the amp. After reading forums, there is little info on how to bias the amp and nothing in the manual. I discovered the bias was at 31mv so I turned both to 40mv and HOLY SMOKES this was the tone I've been seeking all these years. Eureka, I found it and it's incredible now. Completely unacceptable that Marshall included zero information in the manual regarding this, which is a pretty important feature. Moreover, it's important that I explain how to bias this. When you place the multimeter leads in the ground and point, one point will give a reading and the other red test point will read zero, always. YOU WILL NOT BE USING THIS TEST POUNT AT ALL. Go back to the one that gives the reading and keep it in that test point and adjust the pot to 40mv. Then, keeping the multimeter lead in the same pot, turn the other bias adjust til they both read 40mv. Next onto the effects loop, there is a button to turn the effects loop on and off as you can not use both simultaneously like in other amps. What good is this feature? Worthless and is an absolute thorn in my side as I would like to use the midi to switch between both which is why I bought it, but can't. Now, the amp does sound good now that it's properly biased as well as replacing the stock speaker, but I lost years of good tone due to the lack of instruction in the instruction manual.Jonathan
Overall: This thing is awesome if you like that Marshall tone this amp is for you, it's really a 4 channel amp if you get the six way Marshall foot switch, if I had to nit pick this amp would be the reverb, don't get me wrong it sounds great and is useable for 90% of what you would need it for, but if your wanting that Gilmour type reverb you'll need to add a reverb pedal in the chain. Where this amp really shines and I discovered this on accident I was messing around with the effects loops and added an EP booster which I would normally run on the front in, and just WOW…adding the EP booster to the loop really opened it up, tamed some of the compression and evened out the gain while improving the tone, sounds more like a JCM800 at this point, I'm super impressed with this little amp and I have some really nice amps in my collection. Let me say I would totally gig with this amp without question. This fact that Marshall made it easy to change and bias tubes is a huge thumbs up as well. Other manufactures please take noteRick

Wasn't sure about this little guy – – but the one I received was in pristine shape, with power brick and carry handle. I power it with 6 rechargeable AA Lithium batteries – and it'll run x 6 hours easy without recharging. I play an acoustic guitar (i installed a Fishman rare earth pickup) in a small orchestra with a piano, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, etc, and only need to run at about 35% max volume to blend in well with the group. I've taken up giving lessons in my home and, in other locations and, dragging around even a moderate size amp was not in my plans. I did some shopping and, came up with the Micro Cube as my answer, WOW what a feature filled little powerhouse! I debated going to just a plain small practice amp but, after I tried one it reminded me of trying to play through an old transistor radio. Very bland boring sound and, only a push button to get an overdrive sound that sounded pretty bad. This Roland unit sounds Fantastic at 3w and, with only a 5" speaker, I don't know how they do it but, it's Great!! The convenience of battery power is something that I really enjoy also. Take it anywhere! The FX sound Super, amp models are a nice touch and, even a tuner. The 1/8" input is a nice touch to jam with backing tracks or any type of sounds. Taking this to lessons is sooo much more handier than a 30lb. amp. There is only a tone control but, it is really all you need to get the sound you want. The memory function is a handy feature so save preset sounds for each amp model. The only thing I haven't tried is to plug a Mic in and, check it out but, I definately will and, I'm betting that the results will be positive there also. I'm soooo glad I spent the extra dinero and, went with this amp. I'm very satisfied and, definately recommend this anyone looking for small portable amp for practice or any other reason to have a light weight amp that sounds really good. I don't think that I would run a bass through it but, at low volume I wouldn't be surprised that it could handle it. In general this is a great little amp. It is loud, but its frequency range is narrow. I would expect something so small to be weak on bass, but I am surprised at how poor the high frequency is. I have to turn the tone all the way up to make it sound like a regular amp. I will try different speakers and the line out into a different amp to see if the poor high end is either the speaker or amp. The headphone output sounds much better, so I believe the issue is not in the internal electronics. In general I would recommend this amp. So much that I am buying another to give to my son in college as a dorm amp. He is interested in the headphone feature, which sounds very good. As a practice amp this little thing does a great job. The effects are better on some settings than others. but I think there are more effects on this amp than other brands. The portability is great. The battery life it pretty good for how loud it is. With the line input you can not only play along to songs, unaffected by the guitar effects, but it turns your phone into a loud jam box. I wanted to lighten the load at my age and so I gave this a try as it was only twenty-something pounds. The clean tones in IMHO are ok. the chorus is nice. The problem I have is the crunch, lead, the dirty tones to me sounded very tinny. I played around with it for an extended time and when I cut the treble back to 0 it sounded slightly better. But then I realized it would never sound as good as my Bugera does. I guess they call it tube emulation but IMO it's not quite there yet or at least Boss hasn't mastered it yet. Features: Of course one of the great thing about zZounds is you don't have to live with a product you don't like. I just packed everything back up as it was sent to me and shipped it right back. Based on a friend's recommendation, I purchased a new Boss Katana 100 MK 2 in June 2021. The first thing that impressed me was it's power…it seemed to be a real 100 watts in a portable and lightweight package. I was able to dial in some useful tube-like tones right from the start with the clean channel. The Katana warmed up quickly to single coil or hum bucking pickups. The tone "variations" are also very useful for dialing in the right sounds to your liking. The delay adds the right amount of sparkle to your overall sound…very cool! Unfortunately, I was not able to get much help from the Boss Tone Studio when I downloaded it to the amp. (The response was: "Amp not connected"). Another disappointment is no Boss Tone Studio for iOS users…really guys? The required Boss foot switch is another issue…look online to see pedal "hacks" that use standard one-button or two-button formats. (Save a few bucks with a regular pedal). All in all: I'm very pleased with the amp. The line-in is a great feature to use with backing tracks along with the headphone jack for late night practicing. The basic amp tones has a realistic tube texture that reminds me of Marshall, Fender or Vox models.Scotty, M.
I have had the 50 watt for several months which is a great amp, but decided I wanted more foot switching options provided by the GA-FC controller. I figured if I was to buy the 100 watt it might as well be a 2X12. The 100 2X12 sounds awesome. And it is really loud to play at home even on the .5 watt setting. I'm tired of messing with tube amps and effect pedals so the Boss Katana series is just what I need. I have not dived in to the software and deep settings on either amp yet. These are apparently had to get. SAM Ash had it on backorder from Boss. The web and phone support at SAM Ash is great. Chris from phone support helped me complete the order and was super knowledgeable and helpful throughout. He even called me back a couple of times to update status and follow up once it was delivered. Oh… And the 2X12 is way heavier and bigger than the 1X12.Pupster

Got this Amplug Blues today plugged it into my Strat and it sounds great! and I highly recommend it! Now is it perfect? the answer is the usual NO. I think it can be improved on as follows. 1. Put a little color on the dials… the plastic is all black and the plug can rotate to different orientations. Would really be nice to have the dials stand out better with different colors. 2. Change the AA batteries to USB rechargeable Lipo battery. No reason to burn batteries when you can recharge! 3. My main change request is to have Bluetooth Audio In because you plug in the Amplug and then connect headphones (great for practicing). But to add audio to jam to you need to connect another cable to the Aux jack. So for me it just get's to be too much. Since nearly everyone has a smart phone it would be great to use Bluetooth for the Audio In so you can wirelessly play jam track and stuff without needing the 2nd cable. But it does sound really good and I'm keeping it!Harpster58
I regret, that I was mistaken in my previous review. I had claimed that the sound was great – but, that some functions were missing, after about a month of use. That is not true. I re-read the slightly, confusing, manual. The unit itself is – slightly, confusing* – but, it does work the way it is supposed to. In fact, you have a serious selection of effects – at least, three levels, of each one of, three effects – far more than other units in this category of headphone amplifier. The sound is incredible – the thing's got, big, b*alls! – and that, in itself, is worth five stars. Amazing job!

Firstly, the sound is heavily determined by your pickups and what headphones you use. I use this to practice in the mornings when it's too early to use my valve amplifier. I play mostly metal and shred. I have used this device with a range of guitars. The one I use most is equipped with an EMG85 and an EMG60. Active pickups through this device results in a significant amplification of unwanted string noise, when using the high gain setting. For me, this is positive – it teaches me to slow down and focus on proper technique. If you dial back the gain, this "issue" goes away. The built in effects also sound very good. The only thing I would change is the sensitivity of the volume knob. 3 is already loud enough, and 10 is deafening. If you accidentally knock the wheel, you're going to hurt your ears. Keep in mind, the positive Star ratings above are based on price: For the money it is a very good piece of equipment. Yes, it is made of a thin plastic, but as long as you aren't careless with it, that should not be an issue. The battery life could be better: I get around 14 hours out of it, maybe shorter. This is with no effects. I have replaced the provided batteries with Duracell now, so this may increase. If they had a more expensive version with more rugged materials, I would buy it without hesitation

I bought a Fender Champion XL 50 for a small light weight amp to bring to local jam sessions. I have to say I am not disappointed. I know there's no comparing solid state to tubesl when it comes to filling up a room with sound but this little amp cranks. It's closest competition is the Boss Katana and those are really nice. I like the ones I've played, but I'm really into that clean Fender sound and this amp has it in spades. You get the full range of cleans, from black or silver faces to tweeds. There's overdrive and high gain models in there too but as I said it's the cleans that sold me. It is a two channel amp, but I'm not sure why anyone would use the first channel as tall the digital goodies are on the second. That being said, the digital reverb in this amp has a bit of a whistle I don't like. Instead I used the chorus on the amp and a Boss Fender Reverb pedal. If your playing on a stage lugging around a forty pound tube amp may be the thing to do, but for sitting around a garage with friends this amp will save your back and please your ears.ADarkBard
I usually don't leave comments, but feel I must let the frustrated AMP user know, yes Jessica there IS a Santa Claus! Was looking for an AMP that was "SIMPLE" – On channel 1 ONLY the volume is usable, I didn't check but probably the Bass & treble too! On Channel 1 the gain control is set and turning the knob does nothing, and none of the FX are accessible! I was so busy checking out Channel 2 that I didn't check to see if Treble & Bass could be adjusted. You have 12 "Voice Settings" and 13 FX Selections. So I checked out all 12 Voice Settings combined with all 13FX settings – add this to checking these out with a single coil Strat and a Jazz/Full Shred Charvel DK24. I feel this is one of the BEST choices I have made in electric guitar choices! The AMP sound CLEAN!!!! I Imagine Channel 1 would be great with an Accoustic as well! Don't have one though! Channel 2 is GREAT and I don't need any more than it has to offer. It is so uncomplicated & stress free! If you are an expert guitar player and can concentrate more on AMP settings, rather than playing, then go for the Katana 50 MKII, or the VOX Cambridge. I was thinking hard on all three. When I got to GC I had pretty much decided on the Fender Champion 50XL. The VOX Cambridge is $150 to $160 more, with only $10 between the Fender & Katana. Since what is on the AMP is all my mind can handle, I decided to go with the Fender 50XL. It has to be on of the simplest AMPS to operate. I do have an Ibanez Tube Screamer, and if I have a need I can look at other pedals down the road. I do plan on getting a Cry Baby! Latter down the road I might get more pedals, but for right now this AMP has all I need. The Celestion Speaker sound GREAT! I couldn't be happier – it is as loud as I need – It's EASY to learn – NONE of the settings sounded muddy, muffled, or shrill. If I was going to get an AMP that needs a lot of downloading, I would have gone with the VOX Cambride. Glad I traded in my old AMP!Karl, M
Great overall amp. The obvious comparison is the Boss Katana 50. I tried both and I found I could dial in a sound I like from the Champion easier than the Katana. The Katana has way more features and the connect-ability. I prefer just plug in and playing which was far easier with the Champion. One of the largest selling points for me was the headphone jack feature for silent playing. The Champion has it right in front of the control panel and it's a 3.5mm jack. The Katana has one but its on the back and it's a 1/4inch jack which would require an adapter to 3.5mm. The location and the fact that it's 1/4in jack gave the Champion the edge. I also preferred that taller design of the Champion. It made it more comfortable to reach and adjust. Some of the cons are the knobs. especially for the "voice" and the "fx-select". A rotary knob would make it far easier to select the presets. Fender does provide a 3 color LED light that changes when you reach the next model or effect. However, a rotary knob that stops at the preset would be a better. Another con is that the reverb effect is combined with chorus and delay. I would much prefer it to be on it's own rather than combined. This is something that the Katana has. Overall the Champion is great for home use and I would recommend it to someone that wants a good amp that is easy to just plug and play. It's not the greatest amp ever but the sound is absolutely amazing and, most importantly, versatile. You can get so many sounds out of this thing that you realistically wouldn't need any other amp for gigs or recording unless you're an audiophile/perfectionist. Almost any band sound that you'd like is just a community created patch away, it's truly incredible, as long as you have a PC/Mac/Android device plugged into it. The sounds that are built in are still amazing, just a little limited and require some learning to use the effects. Still, you won't find anything near this price that gets you the same quality sound, volume, or variety of uses. The learning curve is nothing compared to the thought and cost of trying/buying dozens of guitar effect pedals – which you can still do, or even use this as an amplified cab for your preamp of choice. If you have a few hundred dollars to try something new then it's worth it. Also worth it if you're looking to upgrade from a practice amp, or need an amp to gig, or don't have the money for pedals, or need to record on your computer, or many other situations. BOSS created the product like a boss, and confirms it's the boss on this market. I own the old 50 watt Katana and the Katana Mini. Both are great. Just bought the Katana 100 mk2, and yes, after whole day spent on setting and playing – I love it. Whatever you need – crispy or warm cleans, crunch or hi-gain sounds you will get it from this amp. Plus – lot of BOSS stomp boxes available as plugins (7 at a time, where 5 manageable by additional GA-FC foot switch). Bit ugly, but fully working BOSS Tone Studio software for setting each aspect of this amp and available effects). Total 9 presets (channel Ax4, channel Bx4 plus "Panel"). Combined with switchable effects quite ok to play a gig. Considering the price/value ratio this amp is an unbeatable champion on the market. I bought a week ago KATAlist from some multi-Line company, and I am sending it back. That thing is good only for couch, while Katana is great for practicing, recording and life shows (assuming you will buy the foot controller). To summarize: – great sounding – very flexible – very nicely priced – relatively small and lightweight You can't go wrong buying it.
Paired this head with my Zilla Cabs 2 x 12 and the sound quality and versatility is excellent. I have 4 well known valve amps, but I find that the Katana is more useful for home playing and practice, mainly because it's easier to get good tones from it at home volumes. It's handy having the Boss effects built in, certainly some of my dedicated pedals sound better but for home practice and recording, the Katana is a simpler plug and play solution. This is a great example of something that conforms to the 80/20 rule, if it does 80% of what I need, why waste time chasing down that other 20%? In fact, I'd say it's more like 90/10 in this case, the Katana MkII is a a great Swiss Army Knife of an amp.

A brilliant wee amp, which packs a hell of a lot more than the 20w on the spec. You can really crank it. I was sceptical before I bought it, seeing it’s more marketed to the ‘metal’ players among us. I play some metal, but hard, bluesy overdriven tones is what I like to play more than metal. It can really go for the scooper mids metal tone as well as a lower end bluesy tone. So it caters for all. I bought this as a little practice amp that I can use primarily as a clean pedal platform at home for late night playing, and it works fantastic for this. Better than I'd hoped. It's very, very loud, so I used an EQ pedal in the FX loop with the level slider all the way down. The Orange dirt sound isn't totally my thing but I do like to mess around with it now and then, and this thing scratches that itch without having to spend a bunch of money on a bigger Orange head. Quite surprised at how great this is. I've tried some other solid state clean pedal platform solutions, and this Micro Dark has probably been the best of them. For context, I hit it with a Friedman BE-OD, Wampler Pantheon, & Spark Booster and all sound just as they are intended to sound. It's a great amp for very little money for sure!KC

It's not to say this is always a bad, I know people that love this amp for doom, stoner and sludge metal for high gain and other that love it because they're not modern metal players that need a tight response.5. In order to get this amp to play modern metal that actually sounds good(not an Ola Englund post processed video with great pickups and speakers) you'll need a Tube Screamer(or a good Tube Screamer clone), at least a 112 cab and preferably an EQ ion the FX loop to iron out any bad frequencies. Purchased the Orange Crush RT35 through Musicians Friend. The amp on its own is a joy. However, the send and return used with a pedal board loaded w/o overdrive properly transports this amp on the Clean channel to an extreme I've experienced on a tube amp level. I used a Walrus EB 10 parametric pedal then a reverb, delay and slight echo at the end of the chain. The amp incredibly warmed, thickened and boosted the tone to one that competes with any of the high end tube amps I have ever used. Totally shocked! I will experiment with the overdrive on the dirty channel and an OD on the front end very soon. I expect good results. For the money and it's being a solid state, it is super impressive and a great value. I did do a lot of research and comparison, took the plunge, and the payoff was more than I could expect. I just A/B'd it with a 40 watt Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (with this set-up) in a studio and it definitely held its own and, I feel, it sounded better. It's a budget amp so you can't expect it to do the same as an expensive one. With that said it just doesn't punch above it's weight, it's punching well above it's weight. I have a pre tube amp that has some tubes in it's pre amp, that isn't quite a full tube amp and this isn't quite a full tube amp either or on the face of i an any tube amp, being it's solid state, but it does sound as warm as the pre tube I have, so that's a bonus for me, I prefer warmer tones. So that means not only heavy rock/metal but some very nice bluesy soft rock tones as well. Bult in reverb sounds really nice. The tuner is perfect, no faffing around trying to dial in the tuning. Best tuner on a lower end amp yet and better than my clip on one I have. It has 4 stages of gain, if you will. So pretty versitile. The amp is loud. I never run it in the house over 3 on the volume. It has one volume for clean but the dirty dial is for the gain volume. And it's adjusting this and the gain knob that gets you all your tones for the not clean sounds Two seperate channels with a simple EQ to use for both. Amp is sturdy as you like, well built. And the clincher is the return and send loop on the back., which works very well, a lovely clean loop. The most surprising thing was you associate orange with rockier sounds but this is a nice clean amp too. I might even prefer the clean channel actually. My advice is see reviews for it. There is one thats 20 or so mins long and shows you all the settings and the tones you can find. No brainer for the price and probably worth 100 quid more if you ask me but don't say I told you so or they will put up the price.R O.
I admit I've cycled through several practice amps – a couple of Fender Champions, Marshall MG, Orange Crush Mini, Strymon Iridium, a bunch of headphone amps, etc. This one is a winner. I've always heard good things about Orange quality and longevity. I like the Orange clean sound but I admit it's not for everyone. I play ambient guitar, mostly clean, with some overdrive from pedals. You'd think Fender would be my thing, right? Nope, the Champions just don't sound good compared to the Orange Crush amps. Plus, this combo amp is built like a tank. At the moment I'm running a stereo rig with the Orange Crush 35 and a Marshall MG15 (modded with speaker out pushing a Marshall 1×12), both on clean channels only, and it sounds really good. I've been playing night clubs, Casinos, Hot Rod Runs, Bike Runs, weddings, parties, and everything since 1979. I used to use 2 Fender Twin Reverbs with Celestian G-12-65's and a rack of effects processors (to run STEREO), with a octopus of wiring to set up at every gig, plus an octopus of switches and stomp boxes and wall warts on power sttrips on the floor. Set up time and tear down time took hours. Sometimes all that wiring maze would pick up the 60 cycle hum, and what a mess locating the buzz! After a gig I had to set all that stuff up again at my home studio to practice. Sometimes there was no time… In 1996 I bought a Line 6 Flextone 2-12 (stereo) and that changed everything. It ended all the major problems and electrical buzzes. I programmed the Flextone right next to my Fender Twins and matched the tones exactly on the Flextone. WOW! No more Octopus Monster and Heavy Gear! I have since had a Spider III HD 120 with 412 bottom, 2 Spider III 210 combo's a Spider Valve 100 head, and recently a Spider IV 120 210. I Use the Spider iii 120 210 and Spider IV 120 210 amps on stage exclusively, with an FBV floorboard. Very Simple for stage and Awesome Sound everywhere I play! But again, many times my gear is loaded in a trailer, or at the venue and I need something that sounds like my Spider IV,,, so I got a Spider IV 15 watt. I quickly dialed in my 6o's Fender Reverb Tone for Country and Surf Tone on Ch 1, my StevieRay Vaughan "Little Wing" tone on Ch 2, The Stevie Ray Vaughan Roto-Vibe Tone on Ch 3, and a Van Halen tone on the Insane CH 4. I'm good to go! The only thing missing, is that the larger Spider Amps have a separate Reverb knob and the Spider 15 shares either the Echo Delay or reverb on the same knob, so you can't have both to smooth out the delay. It's one or the other on the Delay or the Reverb, but that's not a big deal on a great practice amp, that i could use onstage if I had a mishap with my other amps. Sounds best when you aren't pushing the master all the way to the max. Crank it up, dial in your tones, then back it off about 7 on the Channel Volumes, match them, and run the master at about 6 or 7. I can switch the channels with my FBV Floorboard and use it for practicing in real small rooms with a band. If it's not loud enough…Mic it! The tones I use are there and I can pack this amp in 2 minutes and walk out with my guitar without breaking my back with the heavier stuff. Fits right on my front seat. Done Deal! If it's your first amp, it's probably the best starter amp for the money, and for me, I have my tones dialed in for practice anywhere with no hassles.Kenny
Ups dropped it off yesterday, and it is everything I hoped, but better. The metal and insane channels are perfect. The clean is gorgeous, for a sort of metal clean tone. If you want to play a lot of Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, you might be better off with a Vypyr. but if you want Mettallica and Crue, to A7X, back to AC/DC and Aerosmith, youll love it. The metal channel is heavy as hell, and can still get up and throw piercing highs and mids. Everything is tight and punchy as hell. The biggest thing that shocked me was the clarity at seemingly stupid volumes for such a small amp. MF was out of stock when I ordered it, and I still had it in 7 days with free shipping. Very satisfied with this guitar amp. It has a lot of great effects, like flanger, reverb, tremolo, and tape echoes (to name a few). It's very fun to mess around with settings to create great spacey sounds and heavy, sludgy tones. It's also very easy to use. The amplifier also has very useful features, like a built-in tuner and a "save" feature, where the amp can save and remember four different settings at the push (and hold) of a button. It has great tone, volume, and variety, and it picks up things like pinch harmonics extremely well on the Metal and Insane tones. It's also pretty light to carry. I watched a Fender video of the amp and was very impressed with the capabilities and sound quality. When the amp arrived I plugged in my Telecaster and tried the first few presets. The sound coming out of this amp was dreadful. It had a flat, drab sound. It was like a transistor radio next to a Bose radio. The Mustang just sounds awful. I am upgrading from the LT25 to more power, larger sound. The LT50 is the big bother to the LT25 and they have the same preset programing functions. I like the Fender tone both amps produce, the LT50 gives more power and volume. The 30 preset are usable and it allows you to program 30 additional preset base the modeling settings. I am using the LT50 for studio recording, it has a speaker line output jack in the rear cabinet, which is a good to add to the recording mix.NYCScotto

I've owned this amp for a few years. With the clean channel engaged, it sounds great with pedals (mxr super comp into boss od) and gets surprisingly loud for a small apartment. I dont think it would be loud enough for most band practice settings as far as volume. The biggest gripe I have with it is that it defaults to the distortion channel, which is useless for any application. Muddy, buzzy, no low end, no smoothness… just rigid cold distortion that muddied your notes even with the gain at the lowest settings. It's in fact the worst distortion I've ever used. Whenever I turn it on, I immediately switch the channel to clean.Alan

This is a great sounding head. I use it with an LTD 401VF and Godin Redline 1, both stock. I paired the head with a Whitebox 212 loaded with Eminence Swamp Thangs. I run a Fulltone OCD pedal in front of the amp and the whole package just sounds great. I've read a couple of the reviews that didn't like this paired with V30's and I agree completely – I nearly passed on this head because I wasn't digging the sounds I was getting with the paired cab. Tough to explain, but the mids sounded messy…the tone just wasn't as clear as I was hoping. I thought that MAYBE my cab would improve the tone so I pulled the trigger and took it home with me. Luckily, I was right – the Swamp Thangs sound massive with the Dark Terror. If there's any issue with the tone, it's that the setup is a little bit too dark sounding now, so I will probably purchase a 112 cab and load it with a bright speaker and switch back and forth for recording/practice. Currently, I live in an apartment with rather thin walls. Not so thin that I have no privacy, but thin enough to where I can't really use this amp. Even on 7 watts at nearly zero volume, it's loud enough to where I worry about the neighbors below hearing me. On the other hand, even at 15 watts, this amp won't keep up with a full band unless it's mic'd up. This bothers me a bit, because it's a little hard to find a use for the amp. I leave it at my parent's place and use the amp maybe once or twice a week, even still the volume is usually around 9 o'clock. I also use the effects send to power a Blackstar HT5 combo, and the two together have enough power to keep up with a band. Those two complaints aside, this is an amp that is just fun to play. The tone is near perfect for what I typically play, which is punk and metal, but this thing will cover everything from AC/DC to Pearl Jam to Neil Young. My love of playing guitar has waned over the years, but this little amp is bringing me back.Jeff

I am using this in a small home studio where I also use plugins for guitar tones. I am running this through a Sonic vertical 2×12. It sounds great for mid to high gain tones. It wasn't meant to be a clean amp so it doesn't excel at that. Even in the 7 watt setting it is pretty loud so I am using a POD XT Live in the effects loop to 1. Add effects (not amp sim at all) 2. Use the output volume to reduce the level of the preamp going to the power amp. This is giving much better tone than turning the Level control on the amp down. I turn the preamp volume and gain up to where I like it and adjust the overall volume on the Xtlive to suite my needs. Any effect with a volume control should work to do the same-really adds to Tehran usefulness as a practice or bedroom amp. I was concerned about the single tone control but I am ok with it now-easy to switch between rock and metal tones and it is not just like a treble cut tone knob. I also use the parametric on my XTLive in the loop so that helps as well. Looking at similarly priced heads I think I prefer the simplicity and overall tone. I tried a few others that had more features but I couldn't dial in a tone that I liked as easily. I also tried the micro terror but this one seems more like a "real amp" to me i guess.Pbear

Okay, I am as of this writng 51, an old rocker, singer/songwriter and LOVE tube amps. I own Marshalls, Traynor, Peavey, Line 6. I have owned Vox, Mesa Boogie and a few others. Okay for this amp not being a tube amp, I am blown away by how amazing it sounds. The 30 watt is powerful and stays right with my band, fantastic becuase it is so light that my old back does not need to haul heavy stuff. The sound is so totally amazing that you really can cover any style of music and it does not sound like a model amp at all. Not to mention that you can select the tube types and it really does come so very close to the real deal that I now leave behind the heavier amps. I say this becuase I have many tube amps and A and B them. I am very impressed with this amp and though I will not get rid of my tube amps, this has been finding it's way to my gigs more than the tube brothers. BEST model amp out there, it really smokes them all.
Look, line 6 was great in the beginning when musicians couldn't afford to get high cost amps but wanted a good sound. The American Made Line 6 nailed that, but over the years, they've failed. The SpiderValve, I don't care what you say, was a good Idea, but could have been designed way better. What Blackstar had done is Modeled the response of the tubes, not just their tone. And I would have to say that I was loving it, playing The Golden Ax Explorer, The SGJ, and even an LTD Eclipse with a Seymour Duncan Blackout in the bridge. Each pickup responded differently to the amp, and brought the amp to life. I decided to plug into the Spider Valve. I wasn't on it any longer than a minute when it hit me, Line 6's digital sound going through tubes just didn't cut it, but Blackstars True Valve Power nailed it. I got the sound I wanted with every stage of gain, from clean to overdrive. The Effects need tweaking when you first touch it, but wow, they're great too. Bottom Line, don't ever by a Line 6 AGAIN. Yeah true, they are cheaper, but the Blackstar is so much more worth it. They nailed the tube tone. I remember playing on the Series 200 with KT88's and the Series One with 6L6 tubes, and there was no difference in this amp than both of those as far as tone goes.Dr. Strangelove
I was skeptical about the power tube modeling. After all, how many solid state amps have been touted at "tube-like"? Well, this one delivers. In spades. The ISF feature lets you fine-tune the tube sound and you can get several tube models that are virtually dead-on. It's plenty loud for most applications, and the built in effects could conceivably eliminate some spaces on your pedalboard. I've been experimenting with this for over a week now and have barely scratched the surface of its capabilities.Curmudgeon

Purchased an HT40 about 3 years ago from Andertons but the weight was making it difficult to gig with for me. Moved to H&K for a while but an A+B test of this recently against the HT40 convinced me to go back to Blackstar for my gigging amp and getting the separate head and cab keeps the weight down (which I could say same for me)Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
Perhaps a bit surprised, but this is a really versatile head and sounds good with a variety of cabs /guitars too… a lot of thought has gone into the design so it's not a 'one trick pony'. Only criticism is that it is larger than it needs to be for a 20watt, which might suit some folks better than others…singingbowl777
