Bought this nut to replace the plastic nut on a customers import LP style guitar. The fit was perfect, and the XL size really lets you position the nut for proper string alignment (you can easily sand the ends for a custom fit). Before ordering, make sure you measure your old nut carefully comparing all dimensions and string spacing to make sure it will work on your guitar. This nut made a big improvement in the guitars tonal qualities and sustain, plus the permanent lubrication (Teflon) insures the strings will not bind or stick in the slot. In my opinion, this nut is an excellent upgrade for a guitar.light-lawre
The nut on my new Epiphone ES-335 was made of cheap, crumbly plastic. (The rest of the guitar was excellent.) So an upgrade was necessary. The Tusq online how-to video just happened to demo the installation process with an identical guitar, and that was helpful, but the video is excellent regardless of the guitar you own. After I had the nut properly sanded to fit, I did have to open and deepen the slot for the 6th string, as it was too narrow and the string didn't seat properly. The 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings slots were also just a little high compared to the 2nd and 1st, so I filed each of them just a bit (not much!). That's not a job for a beginner, so you may want to consult a luthier if you're not experienced in this sort of work. But the nut works as advertised. The tone is clearer, more complex, and just a bit brighter, compared to the stock nut. The strings don't bind in the slots, as the nut is self-lubricating, so tuning stability is also improved. Fantastic value, i somehow ended with the low E string causing the end of my nut to chip off. This was on a factory Epiphone Les Paul Standard (2011) ebony guitar. I saw this product, and purchased it on a whim as a quick replacement. Installing it took 30 seconds, retuned the guitar, and no other jobs were needed. Fixed. Tone is improved 10-fold, it's very true that this increases harmonics/tone with the material it's made from, also noticed my strings stay in tune much much longer. Highly recommend. If you have a Epiphone Les Paul, this is a simple drop-in replacement for the nut. Shouldn't need any glue, sanding or fiddly adjusting. Or at least i didn't need to in my case.flytheflag77

Other than the XL version, these are the best out there. Replaced nut, saddle and bridge pins on a 1999 Tacoma DR20E. The original nut & saddle were TUSQ as well, but bridge pins were plastic. Like any nut, this will require a process of shaping and fine tuning to get the fit and action perfect. However, having good 200 and 400 grit sandpaper and nice nut files, and a peg winder will make it easier. Be sure and file down the area on the peg board / fret board joint to remove all the old glue and get it smooth. I sanded the bottom until the strings were in the 0.025" range (an action gauge or feeler gauges are necessary), then worked on the slots w/ my nut files to get the action around 0.020" on high E, grading to 0.022" on low E. Strings will not bind on this nut.Marcel

It was a little thin, but I knew that before I ordered the nut. It was the only way without getting a custom nut. The old nut was shaved so low. I had to raise the action up so high to get the high e string not to buzz like heck. I sanded the nut to fit my D’Agostino Benchmark. I set the nut and string height to Gibson specs as I had no info on this guitar. I have almost no relief in the neck. My bridge is slammed down. Plays like a charm, no fret buzz or open fret buzz. It was well worth the chance I took. Was it the neck or frets or both or the nut. Turns out to be the nut. Super happy.David C.

Ordered this nut to actually replace a damaged nut on a 1980's Japanese S type electric guitar. Being a copy, the nut slot didn't conform to standard Fender dimensions, so I purchased the Graph Tech acoustic model nut (which is much larger but has same string spacing) and re-modelled it. It fits perfectly, strings are perfectly spaced (had to do some minor adjustments to the slot depths) but its transformed my cheap nasty untunable copy into a sweet sounding, playable electric with perfect intonation. The strings now sound much brighter, owing to the dense Tusq material. Graph Tech products are more expensive than your standard plastic or bone nut, but well made and finished, they're easy to re-work with standard hand files and wet / dry paper. Great Fender product. String notches were perfect for my '93 American Strat. However, straight out of the pack it is too high for most players and keep in mind it is curved. I came up with the idea to use one of those thick nail files you can flex to fit the curve. Take your time and check it often. Easier to get it right rather than trying to build it back up!kwhitwor11

I bought this for a 2011 American Standard Strat I have, to replace the stock bone nut. A quick comparison between the two obviously revealed that this nut is significantly shorter than the stock one. It's at least 1/16" too short on each side. Here's the kicker…. I also have a 2005 American Fender Yngwie signature Strat and this nut is shorter than the brass nut on it too! I thought this nut was a direct replacement for the Yngwie Strat….? Either way, it was a complete waste of money as I can not use it all all. If they had made it too long, I could have filed it down to fit, but I can't add material to it. I ordered the Tusq nut to replace the plastic one on my Epiphone Tony Iommi SG. When removing the original nut from the guitar the glue took some small chucks of wood out! There is no way of knowing if this will happen. I cut all around the nut with an exacto knife. After filing the nut slot flat again the Tusq nut was too short. Was at one time a pro technician and played since childhood but don't concider myself a player so much. Love working on guitars and playing them and helping friend musicians better they're guitars and basses. This fit right in and sustains nice. Just shaved with a file a teeny bit off each side. Cut it to depth and went beautifully. I love it. Better than cutting and shaping a block of bone. Like the way it tunes. I always graphite the nut slots and it always works great but when fine tuning with this nut it felt sweeter to dial right in. Idk. Need more experience with it to say for sure. It was not my guitar but a semi pro musicians. Hope he likes it as much as I when he gets it back.JB
Bought an old abused and neglected "made in China" Indiana Scout dreadnought guitar in blue sunburst from a recycle store in Oregon. No nut, saddle badly chipped, and no strings. Checked the GC online store, called Montana at the help line. She confirmed my specification needs and was very helpful. I've not glued the nut in place but let the tension on the strings hold it in place. I'm pleased with the TUSQ products and am pleased that they are available. This was the Black TUSQ to match the darkness of the head stock and the fretboard. Bought this to replace a nut on a squier jazzmaster, where the spacing was off (both e strings too close to the edges of the fretboard – comparison photo below). I was really hoping for a stopgap until I could get a nut cut properly. That won't be necessary, with a bit of sanding, this is as perfect as any handmade nut, for a fraction of the cost and hassle of sending the guitar to a tech. It was fractionally thinner than the old nut, but with a tiny piece of card as a shim, it works perfectly.
