I've owned the Alvarez, the Ibanez and a Taylor GT-8. What you usually get with the cheaper baritones is muddiness and in the case of the Alvarez, mine had a funky neck and fret job. I wasn't expecting this to be so nice at this price. But having bought a Guild D-55 and F512 recently, I've become somewhat of a Guild convert. This guitar makes me even more so. Nicely made, straight neck, tunes well and the intonation is almost right on. Just a shade off at the 14th fret, but I think I can work that out. Balanced tone with a nice cohesive sound that you usually get with more expensive guitars. In the low ranges this had a really nice distinct sound, instead of the mud I had with both the Ibanez and Alvarez. The Taylor was great but it was too much of an investment for a specialty guitar like this. If you are thinking of toying with a baritone, this is a great option. The electronics sound good as well on this. It would work well on stage and the unpluggedl tone would work well for recording. All in all a really nice guitar at a very reasonable price, as guitars go these days.Lenny
I just took delivery of my Guild Baritone, and I already love it! It came well set-up right out of the box – though a couple of the string pegs did need to be pushed in all the way prior to tuning. I've had this guitar for about 10 months, and it's great! It's everything you'd come to expect from the ESP LTD line. But the big question is, "How's that bridge?" My motivation for buying this specific guitar was my unending frustration with the floating tremolo on my previous guitar. We started jumping back and forth between standard and dropped D in our set, and making that work with a FR was a nightmare. With that, I had set out on finding a non-FR or fixed bridge, since I rarely used the trem' anyway. I had always wanted an ESP and the idea of each saddle being independent of one another was compelling. It can take a little to get used to, though. Tuning is done at the bridge, and the tension on the strings is adjusted by the tuning pegs. Once the string has the right amount of tension, that saddle will be "activated" in what is referred to as "zone 2". Here, the springs will counter any additional tension applied to that string up to a given point. This means that you cannot do bends or change the pitch in any real or easy way. Some people may like this, but it feels very odd, and the people at Evertune know that most people don't play like this. So, to get the best of both worlds, you will need to apply enough tension on the saddle to bring it right up to the edge of zone 2 by turning the tuning pegs. What I found to be helpful here is to not just listen for the note to change, but to pull on the string and visually inspect movement in the saddle. Once this is set, it feels like a normal guitar with just a tad more tension on the strings. The guitar will come with 10-gauge strings. I gave that a shot for a while. Only recently did I switch them out for some 9s. I think it feels a lot better with a lighter gauge string, especially considering that tad bit of tension. A tip I learned regarding Dropped D was to tune the guitar down by default. Then tune up the low E, which puts that saddle into "zone 3". This is far easier than the reverse and stiJohn Q. I ordered this Bass as I wanted a more modern fretless than my Jazz and decided on a 5. I was first impressed by the exotic finish of these Basses but skeptical on quality at this price. I needn't have worried. I honestly do not know how ESP maintain this kind of fantastic quality/price. Out of the box the maple cap looks great if you like a natural wood finish. I could not find a single cosmetic flaw. The Bass is slightly neck-heavy due to the light weight body but it sits well on a strap. The hardware seems solid enough and looks cool. My Bass was well set-up but other reviews say the contrary. The strings are D'addario Rounds as listed so you may want to change these out for flats if you wish to avoid scratches on the roasted Jatoba fingerboard (they used to be Rosewood). The active threeband eq plus passive pan pot give a lot of tone scope. The only negative point to my ears is that I would like a touch more sustain but all in all consider these Basses before going for a Rockbass.
I have been playing guitar for six years and am a massive fan of hot humbuckers and EMGs. This LTD does not disappoint and is easily my best guitar (next to my Solar s1.6pb27, which also sports an EverTune bridge). The LTD MH1000's body looks great, neck feels great, frets are smooth and it stays in tune extraordinarily well with the EverTune bridge. It is extremely easy to set this guitar up yourself due to the bridge; I didn't have to take it to a shop before I started recording with it. Excellent value.

I am an intermediate player. I was looking for a parlor guitar in part due to the guitar lessons on Active Melody, where the instructor, Brian, uses a similar model, which sounds fantastic. I bought a "scratch and dent" to save some money, but it is verydifficult to see the blemishes. MF described the cosmetic blems perfectly, but they were much more minor than I expected. My wife could not find them. The set up was perfect right out of the box. I put on new strings when it arrived, and have not put the guitar down since (about a week ago). I use it mainly for finger picking, and it sounds great. It is amazing to be able to purchase such a beautiful instrument for so little. I have several more-expensive guitars, including a 15-year old Martin D16GT and a newer Seagull S6, but I am drawn to this Alverez's warm sound and projection. It is also easier to play than the Martin. I had a bit of trouble finding a case that fits, but eventually bought the Luna LLFP. It much more sturdy and padded than the standard gig bag, and the guitar fits nicely. It is also much lighter than a hard shell, and about half the price. (But the case also arrived with a nasty chemical smell inside, but I guess this will fade.) In summary, I am very happy with the Alverez AP70, and I would highly happily recommend it to my friends. Bought this model to get back to playing after a bad accident stopped me playing at a time when I owned a seriously expensive guitar. Didn’t want to spend too much in case I couldn’t get back into playing but I can’t praise this guitar too highly. The tone is outstanding and it’s playability is second to none. The guitar is set up perfectly, no need to have it set up at your expense as with a lot of guitars out there. The build quality is superb and as it sits it the stand encourages you to get it off and play it. This model belies the price you pay because in my opinion it it a 400 to 500 pound guitar in all respects. It is delivered ‘mummified’ in bubble wrap to ensure safe passage and was delivered as promised. Can’t thank PMT enough for their advice. Great people to deal with. I wanted a small, inexpensive guitar that sounded good and played well. I pick up and play a guitar every night while I watch TV. The Takemine dreadnaught I was primarily using was carelessly broken and unremarkable. After reading about this AP70 and listening to Alvarez promotional and YouTube videos, I decided to buy this. It seemed like the thing to do, especially because of the low price and apparent sound quality; it seemed like the best value. It was on back order and wasn't supposed to ship until Feb 9, but I was pleasantly surprised when I received it on Feb 2. It was packed well and mostly in tune already. The construction quality is fantastic, and the sound was pretty good, but not as good as I expected. One of the other disappointments was that it wouldn't stay in tune and the intonation seemed off. After close inspection it seemed that there were not enough wraps of string around the tuners, the quality of the strings used were sub-par and more of a medium than a light gauge, making it difficult and frustrating to play. I immediately replaced the factory strings with Elixer bronze 80/20 nanoweb strings and that made all the difference in the sound, intonation, stability and playability. I wanted to try these on my newest guitar (Martin Jr E) as I had liked them on my previous Takemine F cutaway. They are nice, have a good tone but for some reason, I find the fretboard noise greater on these Bronze strings. I will probably wind going to different strings on this guitar, but I want to try as many as is possible. In the end, I've so far found the Martin light 12 SP strings most suited to this size guitar. In this case, it's probably a mixture of my less than perfect right-hand technique and the composition of the strings. Flat picking, these strings really work well for me.Not as fast Eddie
Guitar strings are a subjective thing, and it comes down to the users preference, so note that my take on these is based on my preference and not an indication of the quality of the product. I bought these because I had heard many good things about Elixirs, but as I suspected the difference between coated/uncoated strings is not a positive one for me. These are labeled as being "slick & fast," but I find that they do just the opposite for me – the coating actually stops my fingers from sliding across the strings. The tone seems OK – I like a "duller" tone, as opposed to that bright, metallic new string sound – these are "warm" as labeled, but I'm still not really impressed with the tone they impart on my Martin D-28. I think I'm better off with the Martin strings that came on it. But again, this is just my preference, and the only way to really tell is to buy a pair and try them out. It's an inexpensive way to experiment with the tone/feel of your guitar.Steven

I wanted an acoustic-electric baritone for some acoustic gigs coming up and saw this was on sale for a price I could not pass up. I also know that Alvarez is a quality brand. I saw a demo video and noticed that the sound seemed a little thin but as I would be electrifying it it wouldn't matter. The bad news is that the pickup is quite lame. If I want to use this live, I will have to invest in a better pickup. Also the notes are not consistent. The second string seems quieter than all the others. The tuners could be better. They seem cheap with a low gear ratio but the guitar does stay in tune reasonably well. Overall I am satisfied. It feels like a solid guitar, the action is reasonable and the intonation is perfect.Most Cowbell Guy
Having never played a baritone guitar before, I am truly amazed at the great sound and play-ability of this guitar. Some reviews on YouTube complain about the electronics are poor, while they are vary basic they work just fine in carrying the signal to the amplifier. Overall: I decided on the ABT60E after looking at every Baritone acoustic I could find. It seemed to have all the features I wanted and the price was very reasonable. I was concerned that the specs on the zZounds website were not the same as the Alvarez website, which showed some up-dated features on this model that I wanted. (LR Baggs Pickup, 1 3/4" nut). I placed the order and was approved for the "pay as you play" financing, which really helps ease the burden of buying a new instrument. The guitar arrived in two days! Everything on the guitar was perfect out of the box! I was relieved see it did have all of the up-dated features as shown on Alvarez's website. The build quality on the guitar is outstanding for a guitar in this price range! The gloss finish on the solid Sitka top is flawless, the satin finish on the B/S is a smooth as can be. The bound neck and fret work are super-smooth, and set-up is perfect, nice and low with no fret out's or buzz. Neck angle is perfect, and the neck is straight. Intonation is spot-on! As for tone, it is very full and rich with lot's of low-end and mids. The size of the guitar is a bit daunting at first, and the 27.5" scale neck along with 16-70 baritone strings take some getting used to for sure! The ONLY complaint I have with this guitar is that I hear some buzzing inside the guitar on some of the low note overtones. I can't quite place where they are coming from, but I suspect the electronics. This is annoying but doesn't affect the amplified sound at all, just when played acoustically. I'll have to take it to my luthier to fix if I can't solve it myself. zZounds did a great job on this order! This is my second purchase from zZounds, and I am sure there will be more. I also ordered the Gator Jumbo Hardshell case zZounds recommended and had it shipped in it. ( I never ship an acoustic guitar without being in a hard case). The Gator case is very nice, good, tight fit and seems well made. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this ABT60E to anyone looking to add a little "depth" to their guitar bench for not a lot of money. I've been playing guitar for almost 15 years and I was looking for something different. I read up on the Alvarez baritone and saw on many sites that users were more than impressed with it, so I waited patiently for my store to order a unit. I took it off the rack, dropped to one knee, positioned it on my leg and gave it a strum. I froze momentarily and then uttered : I'll take it. It literally is that good. My friend, a pro musician playing on a $4500 Taylor 600 series had exactly the same reaction after I strummed the guitar once. It has a super deep, rich sound, well manufactured – a real beauty. I read on several sites that this guitar was "perfect right out of the box". I have to say that once I tuned the strings on std baritone tuning it was … well, a little bit unplayable really. I suppose due to the very high string tension the neck was taking some heavy strain and I noticed that the saddle was pretty high as well. Taking this one for a decent setup is a must for sure. Also, the salesmen didn't really have any idea which case would go with this big boy, but luckily I read up that the Gator Jumbo case worked well, and sure enough it was a perfect fit. I've owned the Alvarez, the Ibanez and a Taylor GT-8. What you usually get with the cheaper baritones is muddiness and in the case of the Alvarez, mine had a funky neck and fret job. I wasn't expecting this to be so nice at this price. But having bought a Guild D-55 and F512 recently, I've become somewhat of a Guild convert. This guitar makes me even more so. Nicely made, straight neck, tunes well and the intonation is almost right on. Just a shade off at the 14th fret, but I think I can work that out. Balanced tone with a nice cohesive sound that you usually get with more expensive guitars. In the low ranges this had a really nice distinct sound, instead of the mud I had with both the Ibanez and Alvarez. The Taylor was great but it was too much of an investment for a specialty guitar like this. If you are thinking of toying with a baritone, this is a great option. The electronics sound good as well on this. It would work well on stage and the unpluggedl tone would work well for recording. All in all a really nice guitar at a very reasonable price, as guitars go these days.Lenny
I just took delivery of my Guild Baritone, and I already love it! It came well set-up right out of the box – though a couple of the string pegs did need to be pushed in all the way prior to tuning. I wanted to try these on my newest guitar (Martin Jr E) as I had liked them on my previous Takemine F cutaway. They are nice, have a good tone but for some reason, I find the fretboard noise greater on these Bronze strings. I will probably wind going to different strings on this guitar, but I want to try as many as is possible. In the end, I've so far found the Martin light 12 SP strings most suited to this size guitar. In this case, it's probably a mixture of my less than perfect right-hand technique and the composition of the strings. Flat picking, these strings really work well for me.Not as fast Eddie
Guitar strings are a subjective thing, and it comes down to the users preference, so note that my take on these is based on my preference and not an indication of the quality of the product. I bought these because I had heard many good things about Elixirs, but as I suspected the difference between coated/uncoated strings is not a positive one for me. These are labeled as being "slick & fast," but I find that they do just the opposite for me – the coating actually stops my fingers from sliding across the strings. The tone seems OK – I like a "duller" tone, as opposed to that bright, metallic new string sound – these are "warm" as labeled, but I'm still not really impressed with the tone they impart on my Martin D-28. I think I'm better off with the Martin strings that came on it. But again, this is just my preference, and the only way to really tell is to buy a pair and try them out. It's an inexpensive way to experiment with the tone/feel of your guitar.Steven

Really nice instrument. I had been looking for a Parlour guitar as intermittent arthritis in my hands has been making playing a regular dreadnought electro-acoustic or acoustic painful sometimes. I had my eye on Cort Parlour guitar as it had a nut width of 45mm and I thought it might help my fingers. Several times I nearly bought one but hearing them on various online videos there was just something stopping me. Then I came across the Jim Dandy. As soon as I heard it online I wanted one. I was dubious as the nut width is listed as only 42.86mm but took the gamble to order one. I was not disappointed. The tone is really bright and you can feel the notes ringing through the tiny body. I went to GC and tried out several small guitars, a Fender, Cort, Mitchell, I even tried a small Taylor. I honestly preferred this Gretsch to even the Taylor. The guy at GC had to go to the back room to get one, he took it out of the box and i tuned it up. Right out of the box it played great. It stays in tune and all the way down the neck each note rang true and in perfect tune (this was not true of most others). Its small but not tiny and the 24" scale makes it playable , its not just for kids. It will be an awesome travel guitar, but I play it at home too. Fantastic value!John
For the price this is am outstanding guitar. I opted for this over a little martin, mainly on the price tag. It doesn’t feel cheap at all. The fretboard is really playable and the parlour body doesn’t feel noticeably smaller than my grand auditorium shaped acoustic. Mal wieder eine Akustik nach mehr als 30 Jahren. Die Saiten habe ich gleich gegen 10er Elixir 80/20 getauscht und nach Bearbeitung des Sattel (Saitenlage im ersten Bund zu hoch) bin ich mehr als zufrieden. Die Verarbeitung ist insgesamt von Haus aus perfekt, Klang, Bespielbarkeit alles Top und für mich sehr passend.

Bridge pickup: fat and loud. This produces a very noisy rock/metal sound that fits perfectly for bands such as Rage Against The Machine and Black Sabbath. No hiss and very useable. Middle pickup: Clear. Essentially the acoustic sounding pickup. Very very effective for chordal work. Sounds great for acoustic work such as certain Babyshambles, Libertines, Oasis and the like. Does get a hiss occasionally, but not too huge. Probably isn't aided by my old amp. Neck pickup: bright. Extremely sweet sounding pickup for solo work beyond the 12th fret. It does sound a little muddy playing 1-5th frets on occasion, but the tone and sound at the other end of the neck is beautiful. Sounds fantastic playing Hendrix, Kravitz and solo's from Strokes etc. Have also used it to good effect on some Clapton tracks. There is the option to mix pickups (such as half neck humbucker, half single pickup) but I generally find these too weak and in-distinctive to be used effectively.
the part where subjectivity kicks in (have you noticed how "objective" this review was from the get-go? ). The styles of music I play, as I mentioned earlier, are mostly the Metal subgenres, with an occasional pull of a bluesish pentatonic. To me, this guitar fills every need I might have concerning any and all "heavy" music. It simply molds itself to any need I might have, and fills it in style. Sure, I DO have that Peavey Raptor as well, using it as a practice guitar, but the GRG will remain foremost. If I had had a question to ask before I'd bought it, then that question would irreversibly be: "Does it come as a "2 for 1" special?"… and if it were – forbidden be the thought – lost; or worse – stolen, then I'd definitely get another one. Simply put, this is my guitar. What I love most about it is it's demeanor. I compared it to the Raptor: whilst the latter is an extremely comfortable guitar, quite literally screaming "play me!" (I don't speak "guitar", though, sadly), the Ibanez stands firm, proud and distinguished, with a superior look on it's face; It took me a while before I could subdue and befriend it, unlike the Peavey's "I go with anyone" attitude. Yet that's what the beauty of taming is all about. What do I hate about it? Possibly everything, possibly nothing. But the thing that ticks my nerves, still, is the aforementioned buzzing frets (though, I reiterate, that is not a fault of the builder). And, lastly, my favourite feature of the guitar is, as you might not have guessed, the neck. 24 medium frets of sizzling speed, Ultra-fast picking and high screams, on a fast and responsive neck. That is, ultimately, what the GRG 170 is all about. Versatility and adaptability, all with an affordable price tag.
Getting used to the extra 2 strings, which is a little awkward. And the fanned frets is something new too. It's kind of like learning the basics of swimming, then decide to try the diving board. LOL. I'm cool with that, as it saves me from buying a bunch of guitars along the way to be comfortable with this concept. I really dig the guitar, has all the features I was shooting for at a really accessible price point. Well made, a keeper.Will R.

I love the sound of this guitar. The lower voicings just grab you from the first chord. I tuned down A to A and it Plays fine. Right out of the box it felt good. I like an instrument that fights back a little when playing. The bigger strings and action on this guitar felt great. The only down side so far is finding replacement strings of the same gauge and lenght. If your like me,it took awhile to pull the string on this purchase. Go for it. You'll be glad you did.J.

I wanted an inexpensive guitar to replace my other one that my son "borrowed." This Alvarez is really great for the price. Surprisingly good fit and finish to the build. Tone is decent and has easy playability, the action was setup perfectly out of the box. The on-board electronics are a really good "plus" for this price range, even the tuner function is handy to have. Really good value for money, I would recommend this guitar for a beginner or for a more advanced player who just wants a decent, playable guitar on a budget.Jay
This guitar arrived in two days and was the best packaged guitar I think I've ever received! Looked as if had just left the factory and was in pristine condition. No dirt or dust or glue or scuffs or fingerprints ect. This is "Grand Auditorium" shape, which is smaller than a dreadnought, but bigger than 0M, and has a nice thin wasteline,(just how I like my women also). It's a around 4.2" thick at lower bout, and 3.5" upper. Has 43mm nut which appears to be bone or something similar like tusq, same as the compensated saddle. Neck profile is perfect, period. The Beautiful gloss mahogany top is absolutely stunning for this price range. HFS, sums it up perfectly. The back and sides are a flawless matte/open pore mahogany, that really makes this Alvarez unique. It has a laminate top so they have binding of some sort around the inside of the soundhole, which is another classy touch aesthetically. Very nice feeling & sounding guitar.12s strings come installed from factory. I was absolutely floored hearing the sound of this guitar! You would never know this doesn't have a solid top! Idk how they do it honestly, but it looks, plays, & sounds like a very expensive all-mahogany guitar. Setup is perfect and the action is stupid low! STUPID!! .4 cm Top string at the 12th fret with positively no buzzing or choking out whatsoever. If it goes on sale again, I'm probably gonna buy another one, it is seriously that good! Very well balanced and rounded tone from the high, to the low E. The built-in tuner/pre had an unsoldered power wire in the bottom battery/input jack. Which took me a while to figure out, so musicians friend, like they always do, made it more than right. They made me a downright happy customer!
