6 String Bass Guitar Tuning For Sale (2024 Update)

I bought these for my fretless 6-string because I use half-rounds (other manufacturer) on my 4-string fretted, and have always liked the way they feel and the way they sound. These however have NO HIGH-END OUTPUT!!! If you've used flat-wounds or half-rounds, you know there's going to be less high-end frequency. But WOW, was I floored at the lack of response from these! On top of that, the process they use to flatten the top-rounded area to make them "smoother" to the touch, leaves a RAZOR-LIKE EDGE that will catch your fingers if you try doing any slide work. Absolutely the WORST strings I've ever waisted this much on! I replaced them one week later with DR-Coated strings, and am very happy with them. Not to mention they come in cool colors (mines blue on my blue bass, hehehehe). Heed my warnings, these are horrible! But if you want a slightly used set to try out, let me know.SteveSteve

I have not noticed any sharp edges. not as bright as round wound. I use flats on my fretless, so these are feel more like those, a little brighter. Low B sounds really good and easy on the fingers.pastor larry

I bought this strings for fretless bass. Before them was round wound strings. The sound became very bad… It have very little sustain… the Fifth string not sounds… One good thing is that they not damage the fingerboard.bazcustom

Nice responsive set, good tones. I prefer flatwounds but ridiculously hard to find for my Schechter Hellcat VI. I swapped the "A" string (.074) to the "E" position and added in it's place a (.064) as the Hellcat bridge has a way too tight bore and I want more comfortable playability. I am first a guitar player, then a bass player so making it feel like a down-tuned guitar more comfortable for me. Sounds good, plays fine, just wish either Ernie Ball or D'Addario would make a light guage flatwound set for these Fender Bass VI style axes.John Catfang

I have used these on my custom Maccaferri hollow body bass with a 30" Danelectro neck and they are perfect. I have no idea why others have said these aren't good for a 30" (short scale) bass. Maybe they stuck the high "E" on the "G" post or something, etc. I'm going to use a set on a Fender Bass VI. The price is incredible and they don't chew up your frets like some round wounds. These were described as new, they were not ! Obviously some one had these strings on another bass guitar and for ever reason they did not like and then decided to cut them off. When I got hold of them they are not long enough to go my bass. So that was a complete and utter waste of time and money. I just purchased another set today from a dealer for $20.00.ts-w4s-kgetmvy3s

This little gadget is fantastic and well worth the money. It's super easy to install and setup and does exactly what it says. Just a quick push or pull of the D-Tuna and you instantly jump from E standard to Drop D and back again in an instant. No fiddling with lock nuts or tuners again, or just having 2 seperate guitars setup in each tuning, so cool. I've been using it for over 4 months now and it still functions perfectly and I've used it quite a bit. I installed it while doing a string change and everything went nice and smooth just following the supplied instructions. If you have a top mount/decked Floyd Rose this is a must have if you use E standard & Drop D regularly.David B

Its great to have if you dont have an arsenal of guitars to switch between tunings. Pull the trigger, a couple of twists on the fine tuners and youre good! I dont know how well it works on other locking tremolos? But it fits and works great on my Floyd Rose knock-off. This product is of Eddie van halen. It's very popular among guitar players since it's eddie who invented it. I put it on my Sterling AX3 music man axis copy and I have to say it works perfectly. I get drop d tuning by pulling the thing out of the bridge and it goes right back to E when you push it back in. So it's really convenient for switching from drop d playing to regular E tuning. I think it also makes the guitar sound much better since the bridge I put in it is a cheap Floyd rose imitation. The guitar sounds much better now. But I also changed the pickup wiring so that could be the cause of much improvement in tone.ibanezwielder

Overall: I wandered into a national Music store chain one day in Oct 2016 and went straight to the used guitars that were hanging on the wall in the used section. I'm always trying to keep an eye out on a good used Music Man electric as I try to collect these fine instruments. That particular day there was pretty slim pickings so I wandered through amps, effects and I ended in the pass guitar section. (I do play bass but usually when I write my own tunes) and this 6 string bass caught my eye. It didn't look cheap so I asked one of the vultures hovering there ( employees, just doing their gig) what he could tell me about this bass. It was pretty light-weight, first impression, so he gave me the run-down on the thing and I asked him if I could put it through the paces that I knew and we plugged it into an Ampeg mini brute what ever it was called and began a 45 minute of exploration where I passed this through an extensive test regarding tone, intonation,ease of reaching pots, tome control, The bass boost, I checked out the spec's which were pretty tight on with what was written. The balance was great, ease of use overall in case I plan to take a 6 string bass to a gig and perform for 3 hours was good weight-wise. I was particularly impressed with the bright tome. Overall: I bought this simply to see if I want to pursue playing a 6 string. Beyond a few brief encounters in music stores, I have not played one and opted to try the tried-and-true Ibanez brand. The price point had me a little scared but this was a great purchase. I don't expect to have this long being I will either continue on the 6 string, or it will be flipped into something else. This is my first Ibanez and I will likely give the higher end SR models a closer look regardless of string count. The Good: Price, the setup was perfectly playable out of the box, tone is decent, weight is good for a 6 string, the fret ends a dressed. The Bad: doesn't balance well (Raw leather strap helped), finish is thin and wood not worth keeping natural (wanted the black model but, out of stock), Odd EQC.j.

I had no trouble setting up this bass. I was able set the intonation perfectly. Even the low strings sustain pitch very well and were easy to tune. I added a slight relief to the neck, because there was a lot of string buzz. After this slight adjustment to the truss rods, there is only a buzz when playing hard on the bottom 3 frets of the lowest string. The action is still low and it is very easy to play (though I do have long fingers). The stock strings are very cheap. As someone else stated, I feel upgrading to higher quality strings may resolve the low B buzz issue. The tone is amazing thanks to the built in EQ bass boost. I found it easier to play harmonics than my other basses. Walking bass lines sound smooth and percussive playing sounds pro. This is my new favorite bass. I can't wait to play it with the band.Michael O

I recently recieved my LTD B-206SM and absolutely love it. It is well constructed, solidly built, and heavy. It has a incredible thick, punchy tone. The controls give a variety of tonal capabilities. Because of the mass of the body and 6 strings, I would suggest getting a large FretWrap to cut down on string vibration. If you play standing up, I would also suggest getting a wide, padded bass strap such as the Gruv Gear Neo 4" strap. I sit down most of the time when playing, but use a wide strap anyway. The case in my photo is the Ibanez MRB500C and it fits perfectly. The B-206SM is an excellent bass and an incredible value with a not too high price. I would recommend it highly.RJD

I've had one for about a year and a half and I can't say enough about this beautiful beast. I got it because I wanted to have one bass flexible enough to provide any tone I'd need for 4 hours of rock/blues/country covers. With some 6 string basses, the output and tone can be terribly inconsistent from string to string, particularly if you have a run that uses all 6 of them. This one, however, has an extremely focused and consistent tone and level no matter where you are on the neck. Playing power chords on the 3 treble-side strings sounds clean and almost guitar-like. I'm a tech and a luthier, so naturally when I buy a bass, I go over it with a fine-toothed comb, adjusting and looking for inconsistencies. The setup was already near-perfect and the cavities are tidy and well-shielded and grounded. Yes, it's heavy. It's a serious bass that uses its weight well. strap balance is great, and i got used to the weight and enjoyed the sustain and resonance that solid weight can bring. There are basses with higher end preamps, more sensitive pickups, more exotic woods, but you will not find a better one than this for twice the money. Exceptional finish, build, balance, broad palette of tones, sustain, and playability. Not to mention the wow factor every time someone new sees it. The price has gone up since I bought it, so pick one up before ESP wises up and charges what it's worth.Jamison

Overall: I'm a guitar player that switched to bass 20 years ago. I've missed the ability to play full chords and solo in a range that can be easily heard. I tune this bass an octave lover than guitar with the same string relationships. Low E, not B. This bass allows me to do that with no set up issues. If youre coming from a 4 string this will be a wide neck, but 5 string users will adust. It's well balanced and finely finished. LONG REACH TO 1ST FRET ON LOWEST STRING, which is F for me, but I can get it. The fan fret design probably helps to keep string tension equal. I have a Novax (Ralph Novak invented the fret system) so I'm okay with it.Jeff

The strings arrived today and I wasted no time getting them on my bass. I was replacing old strings of an unknown origin that were on this bass when I acquired it four days ago. The old strings were a lighter gauge and when I put the new ones on I had to adjust the truss rod (which is no big deal and to be expected anyway.) After a couple hours of playing my right hand finger tips were really feeling it. Not painful, just unpleasant to me. The tone of the nickel, as advertised, was bright and crisp and brought extra clarity to the B string. I wonder if it's the nickel that makes the strings feel hard and abrasive. I've been playing for 50 years so my fingers are used to what a bass string feels like.I don't think I have nickel strings on any other of my basses. I play 5 hours almost every day on multiple basses and none of them feel like these nickel. I need to play these some more before I decided whether I like them or not. Sound-wise I like them but on comfort-wise the jury is still out. I hope I end up loving themPreston

I have to say that I haven't used these yet, I bought them to replace the factory strings on a low-end 6 string bass that I just bought, but they look great and Daddarrio does make dependable strings (except for their mandolin strings-run away from those!). If I find I have problems with these later and there is an option to edit this review, then I will do so.Ben

Where can I start about this Bass?? Awesome all the way, great woodwork for blending 3 different types of wood. It feels great to play, I'm able to get all the sounds and tones I look for in one Bass. Musician's friend came through for getting me this Bass right before my gig and was able to use it for the first time and fell in love even more of this Bass playability. The neck through design is hands down amazing when hitting those low keys. All in all, you get a lot of bass for the money and it was worth all the wait. I bought this bass because it was reasonably priced yet included several features I felt were very important to me. The neck is milled from the same built up block of Merbau wood as the body so there is no bolt on neck junction. The results are a very smooth, stylish and uniform piece from neck to body. This makes for a very thin and playable upper register, a very thin D shape to the neck and very flat fingerboard which I find easy to play on all strings. The fret work is great. The tuners are excellent. I had to adjust the action some and then readjust the intonation but now it is perfect and stays in tune for more than an hour of solid playing. The electronics are active-only but I see active/passive sets for sale and may switch out the factory wiring so I have the option of playing passively when I need the added tonal qualities. The overall active tone is very rich with plenty of range for adjustments to taste. I think the factory pickups are just fine but I have read some players upgrade to U.S. EMG's – I don't see why that would be necessary. I haven't played it through any pedals yet as so far, I love the sound straight up. Overall, after playing it only two gigs, I think it's a great bass and very easy to play for a six string. There are things that I love about this bass: the weight, the balance, the uniqueness. Despite being really expensive, it's probably my go to travel instrument just for the weight and size. Having said that, for the price the quality and fit and finish is really disappointing. The thin veneer is beautiful, but really thin and easy to damage. Beyond that mine was clearly not put together well. I alternate between playing with fingers and a pick and couldn't figure out why I kept hearing an odd noise when playing with the pick. Well, one of the four neck bolts was installed incorrectly and the washer is just rattling around, but the bolt is unable to be loosened or tightened, so obviously it was cross threaded on installation. My biggest complaint is the frets were not installed on the neck correctly, they actually hang off one side a bit and cut my left hand to shreds while playing fast. For the price it should have been comfortably playable out of the box, not needing as much work as a used guitar. I'd be really hesitant to buy another Ibanez after this experience.Andy

These are good strings for the money. I typically use the Warwick Black Label, but for the price I figured I would give these strings a try. They retain sound well and for a good amount of time. I find them to be bright in sound for nickel strings. There is one major issue with these strings though. i currently use a Warwick Corvette 6 string bass and the .135 string will not fit on the saddle for the string on the bridge. The bass of the strings where they have been wound is to large and will not set into the saddle. I like the strings, especially for the money, however, when only 5 of the 6 strings can be used, it greatly diminishes the value of the strings.tmmwt2-T_1kf

I like these strings; they sound good, bright, but not overly so. They wear well, and retain their sound for a long time. I like the sound of nickel/steel strings, but most that I've tried lose their brightness pretty quickly. Stainless lasts longer, but the sound isn't to my taste.Mindriot

I have been playing a 5 string for the past 4 years or so. My bass right before this one was the Ibanez Srff805. Though the neck is wider on the srac806 there wasnt much of an adjustment to the 6. I thought i'd miss the strings often while playing due to the spacing or get lost on Which key i was in buuut the transition was pretty easy and the neck plays pretty well like most ibanez necks in my opinion. I would recommend trying ibanez basses for anyone who hasnt reallt played then before especially for extended range basses. They are really good at extended range instrumentsClaysherr

What can I say. This bass has an amazing range of tones. The neck through design gives it a great mid range punch, and also keeps it from being too heavy at the headstock. The built in EQ system does the job, but it is also nice that you can bypass it in favor of your own EQ as well. All and all a great bass for the price.Colin

This is the fourth bass I've owned, and I am quite satisfied with it. My one complaint with it is that the pots are loose and don't have a center detente. But that's nothing that new pots and a soldering iron won't fix so I'm not bothered by it. I also bought it used; it could be a singularity but other people have had some trouble with the electronics. But this thing is passive and re soldering it is a walk in the park. I absolutely love the tone variety that I can get from this bass. With new strings on and on a bridge heavy tone you can coax out that signature Warwick growl using fingers or a pick; both sound good. It isn't a one trick pony though, if panned onto the neck you can get a nice fat sound that is sufficiently toned down but not so much so that you get lost in the mix. If you have both pickups at a similar level, you get a good balance of tone. I vastly prefer the placement of the pickups so you get a more ballsy sound than from something like my Schecter Stiletto. I also like that a tone knob is used instead of an onboard EQ- it's simpler but just as versatile especially when still figuring out the tone that you like. I put Power Slinkys on as soon as I got it and they work great. I play through a Hartke LH500 into a 1×15 cab, the only effects I use are a Xotic RC booster and an MxR comp. I love both, the comp is an always on pedal for me and the RC booster really brings this thing to life and gives it a little extra body and oomph so you really cut through the mix. I haven't tried this thing with distortion yet, so I can't speak to that if that's something you're looking into. This thing really can do just about anything; I played it in church and the sound guy loved it and I play hard rock/ metal tunes for fun at home and it rocks for both. Word of warning though, if you're used to covered pickups the open magnets may throw you if you're used to plucking pretty hard (guilty). Bottom line, if you want a versatile bass that tends toward an aggressive tone, buy this. Try and find one used, it's a much better deal. I don't know that I would've bought this at the new price. I would advise playing one in person first; I picked up a Warwick at a store a few years ago and didn't like it but then picked this one up recently in store and loved it. So it isn't for everyone. But for the price, the tones you get from this thing are real hard to beat, even if you buy new.Ajgriff

This bass was a horrible buy. Poor craftsmanship. Heavy as all hell, Finish was unbelieveably tacky and the neck was ridiculously difficult to play. While the Idea of MM style pickups on a five string seemed like a good idea, the sound was far below what it should have been at this price. The control knobs were so loose they would sometimes even roll on their own and knock your volume and tone settings way off. I dont know if this is common of all instruments in the Rockbass series. But nevertheless, shame on you Warwick. Sold it for a new Soundgear.Arctic bassist

Overall: I have owned a German-made Warwick Fortress One Masterman for nearly 20 years. I have always loved the tone and playability of this particular instrument. With this in mind, I was in the hunt for a back-up 4 string bass for a 3 piece acoustic gig. I knew that I did not want a used piece, but perhaps a new, entry level model Yamaha or Ibanez as a suitable back-up. I was close to getting the trbx505 Yamaha for about $500.00. So when I price comparison shopped online, I came across this beautiful Warwick RockBass Corvette $$. What?? 8 payments, No interest, No credit. I was tempted to give this a try and man am I ever glad that I did. 4 days after my order was completed, this brand new, factory sealed Warwick in my hands. The playability is much like the Fortress one German bass and the tone and sustain of this beauty is absolutely remarkable. Serial to parallel switching in both volume pots, and tone enhance on another pot. The high and low mids are exceptional. the dual humbuckers (passive) offer a very punchy low growl at higher volumes. Use a compressor/enhancer and you will be in hog heaven as I was. I you are loyal to the Warwick brand and have not tried a RockBass, you might be very suprised. The balance, weight, adjust-a-nut III, 3pc bridge bring a very familiar feel to the German counterparts. M.E.C. electronics are the same as well. Now, with the comparisons aside this Warwick Rockbass does just that, it Rocks the Bass.Best bang for the Double Buck out there.I am very satisfied with my purchase to this point and zZounds made it all possible.Thanks guys!!!!! Some advice, play as many basses at your local guitar vendor that you can, ask questions, settle on the sound and feel that you want, then go for it.Thomas

Overall: The only star I gave less than a 4 is the Overall, I gave that a 4. Why? Because it feels like the price in the weight and appearance. That's not a bad thing because it plays and sounds Awesome!! I grabbed this because I was looking for something lite on the back for the 3 hour shows. When I first got it I was a little nervous thinking it was maybe for a beginner but once I plugged it in with the band it punched right through and the guitarist noticed a huge difference in sound compared to an Epiphone Thunderbird I was playing. I should mention that Epiphone costed me $300 more and this Ibanez seems to beat it in punch and overall sound. All that said I may buy another in black for the metal band. (Using the one I bought in classic rock etc..) That metal band sound? Think Lamb of God meets Slayer…I used it in that style of music and it punched right through. A problem I WAS having is whenever you play in metal bands the bass seems to drop out and more so during guitar solos. Well the reason I may buy a second one of these is because it performed well with that "Metal" test. So…If your looking for some punch, more EQ room and something that doesn't hurt your back for a GREAT price this is a great choice.Tony

I've owned my Yamaha JP2 for more than a year and this is, hands down, a fantastic instrument. The workmanship is superb and the tone is as even and balanced as any bass I've played. The range of tones available is tremendous and they are all usable. For a 6 string bass, this is the best value in this price range. If you want better, prepare to spend $6k and up on a Ken Smith, Fodera, etc. It is the prettiest thing I own! The only potential negative has to do with the sheer size of the instrument. If your hands are of medium size, the neck may be too big for you. The wide string spacing and 35" scale work for some people but it's not for everyone. In addition, at 11 lbs it's not exactly light. Within two months of ownership I switched to Gotoh GB-350 lightweight tuners and reduced the weight by nearly 1/4 lbs. While the balance wasn't bad before, the lighter weight tuners improved it; in my opinion, it's how it should have been equipped.brianmassie79

The bass has been treasure. The solid construction and quality electronic provides me full confidence that I can count on – stage or studio. the street price makes it less expensive than Boutique 6's but stands well above the mass mfrs. Beside this , John's time to make it the best working bass for working musicians really touched me. Who needs all that fancy woodwork?? … its not furniture! its the real deal!!! Don't get me wrong the switch from 4's scared me. I didn't even touch her for 2 days and then spent 2 hard weeks alone together before exposing us to band mate ridicule (or so I imagined). But our debut together was off the chain, thankfully. Now we are never apart for very long. the other stable mates are jealous, but love it love.Wa Du

The bass is so versatile and you can EQ crisp highs without loosing deep lows. I have the original JP (amber) and the newer JP2 (red). Both are amazing basses that I prefer to play much more than my Alembic or Pedulla basses. The JP2 is a step up from the original model as the EQ seems better and neck is increased from 34" to 35". The very wide neck is a blessing to me but may not be liked by others.Doctor Jay

My precision 1959 vintage bass tuning key is the same size of 3 1/2" long, but he anchoring plate at the top is 3 1/4" , 3/16th wider at the top than the common replacement key. Co you have such a vintage piece in stock? , I could use a set of four(4). They dont fit genuine American precision bass vintage nek.The back of the tuners are not flat as there is the roll over clamps holding the worm gear.This would require routing out of the back of the headstock.This is something i am not prepared to do to a $2000 neck.Very disappointed.BIg waste of money and time.Purchased gotoh machine heads in Australia and they fitted straight away.Through the Fender ones in the bin.mangosheen2

I've played drop C for the last 4 years. In the past i would buy a pack of Ernie Ball five string set and chuck the thinnest string. This was my solution to never finding the set of gauges I really wanted, and being too poor to purchase a custom set in bulk. Enter the DDT series! First of all it's the perfect balance for even tension for drop C, they keep a lively tone for months without getting mucky and dull. Call me crazy, but I swear they just sound meaner and darker then any other string I've tried. If you are in drop c and playing a four string bass, there is no reason not to get these! These are the best strings for tuning down. I tune down to B standard and these work really well, but I would suguest these for if you're tuning down lower to A standard. I would probablly go with the DDT Heavy bass strings for B standard tuning instead of these. The B string seems a bit too massive a guage and might be over kill. They still do the job and sound awesome.Foul Phil

Great strings if you want to have a stable dropped tuning on your 4 string bass. I achieve stable AEAD tuning on standard scale bass with these strings. And they sound great!Reviewed by Andertons Music Co.
