SATURDAY, JUNE 28
7:15 p.m. Ableton Master Session I: Ableton Live Drum Rack, DubSpot (348 W. 14th St.)
Ableton Live's Drum Rack is the ultimate tool for unique beat-production and fresh sound design for drums. Drum Racks are not virtual instruments in the traditional sense but provide a powerful framework for building customized drum banks. For new users, they are the ultimate in simplicity as sample kits can be built quickly using drag-and-drop. Drum Racks subtle strength lies in that they can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. Loop junkies will love the new beat-slicing facilities, and MPC freaks will enjoy the ease with which they can use pad controllers to control even the largest drum banks.
In this class, Jon Margulies, author of Ableton Live 7 Power!, will demonstrate how to use Ableton Live as the ultimate drum machine. Learn how Live provides a simple, streamlined environment that allows you to seamlessly combine sampling, synthesis and loop slicing in just about any way you can dream up.
8:15 p.m. Ableton Master Session II: From Producer to DJ, DubSpot (348 W. 14th St.)
In this session, Jon Margulies will discuss his performance evolution from live PA to a hybrid DJ set that he's mostly given up trying to explain to people. As more DJs become producers and more producers gig with their computers, the line differentiating the types of electronic-music performers is becoming ever more blurred. Margulies will demonstrate how incorporating original elements can make a DJ set more flexible and improvisational, and he will explain why producers might want to consider incorporating other people's music into their live sets.
Whether you're an experienced producer or brand new to the game, Ableton Live 7 has powerful new features that you need to come experience for yourself.
SUNDAY, JUNE 29
6–8 p.m. DJing on Air With Traktor Scratch, Apple Store (401 W. 14th St.)
Learn how to DJ at this hands-on event. Join representatives from DubSpot and Native Instruments for a special performance and DJ instruction using the Apple MacBook Air.
