Report: Remix Hotel New York Day 3

Korg at Remix Hotel New York 2008

New York City in the summer has some crazy-ass weather. Day 3 saw rain, thunder and lightning, but once again, that didn't stop attendees from braving the elements to come hang with us at the SAE Institute in Herald Square.

Today, I stood in awe in the Korg room at the superthin, supersmall Korg nanoSERIES USB MIDI controllers. Scheduled to be released this fall, the nanoSERIES includes the nanoKEY, nanoPAD and nanoKONTROL.These babies plug right into your computer and are made for musicians on the go. They're lightweight and versatile, and the best part is the price: They'll be offered at $60, $70 and $80 apiece. I was floored at how cool these are.

When I left the Korg room, the hallway was packed as Pete Rock just finished his appearance on the Industry Survival Guide panel, presented by Remix. Everyone was stoked to stop and talk to Pete (who, by the way, is a totally nice dude). Pete then went into the Rane/Serato room to hang with and give props to his buds Grand Wizard Theodore and Grandmaster Caz, who were scratching and MCing. Jazzy Jay then took over the decks to perform with Scratch Live. He blended a bunch of old-school tracks (Nu Shooz, "I Can't Wait," for example) with crazy old-school video. It was awesome to see beats scratched along with classic footage from the short-lived show Graffiti Rock from 1984, a hip-hop version of American Bandstand. Sweet!

This year's RHNYC was an enormous success. It felt like it went by really fast for us (maybe that's because we're still recovering from our respective hangovers). The weekend included so many demos, panels and artists interviews that I wasn't able to cover in these short show wrap-ups. But have no fear: We'll be posting tons of photos, videos and audio clips from the event, so stay tuned to Remixhotel.com to see all the action. And get ready for when we hit the A-T-L Sept. 18–20. We can't wait to see you there!
