A TOUCH OF CLASS

Sep 1, 2006 12:00 PM

Style/Genre: Dance rock, electro/disco/punk

Established: Founded in NYC in 1999 by Oliver Stumm and Dominique Clausen. A Touch of Class (aka ATOC) is an umbrella for all their activities, from the label, music production and DJing to artwork/design and throwing their own parties.

Artists: Scissor Sisters, The Ones, Services, Waldorf, A Touch of Class, Xavier.

Essential Listening: The Ones, “Flawless” (1999); Waldorf, “You're My Disco” (2001); Scissor Sisters, “Comfortably Numb” (2002); Scissor Sisters, “Filthy/Gorgeous” (2004); A Touch of Class, A Touch of Class Sucks! (2004); Services, Your Desire Is My Business (2005); Services, “Element of Danger (ATOC Remix)” (2005)

Manifesto: “A Touch of Class Recordings is mostly a platform for our own production output that focuses on fresh and interesting ideas regardless of genre,” Clausen says. “Rather than depend on publicity hype and industry compromises, we keep total creative control and concentrate on product development and high craftsmanship. We try to keep it interesting and contribute to the development of our re-recycled culture.”

A&R Philosophy: “More music, less looks,” Clausen says. “More attitude, less genre. Rock music you can dance to and dance music you can rock to. But actually we're not looking to take on any new projects right now.”

Upcoming: Waldorf, Age of Stupid (fall, 2006); The Ones LP, featuring remixes by ATOC, Scissor Sisters, Dimitri (of Deee-Lite), The Rapture and more (fall, 2006); A Touch of Class Still Sucks! compilation, featuring productions and remixes by ATOC for the likes of The Gossip, Le Tigre, Erasure, Scissor Sisters and others (fall, 2006); Extensive ATOC DJ Duo European tour (fall, 2006); Services, “Cemetery” (fall, 2006), including remixes by Zongamin and Nick Zinner (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs); Services follow-up LP (winter, 2006)
