LABEL LINK

Jul 1, 2001 12:00 PM, By Martin Brown

Topaz Records' seemingly endless string of independent releases shows that some small labels are willing to put their money where their ears are — or better yet, someone else's money. Scott Schlachter, chief of fledgling trance and progressive-house label Topaz Records, admits he was surprised that someone was actually prepared to invest in his Manhattan-based venture. “Who was I to say no?” he says, only half joking.

Since putting out its first release in September 1999, Topaz has earned a top-notch reputation in its hometown, releasing records by artists such as Vicious Vic, Organica, Scott Stubbs, and Reid Speed. Schlachter believes that being based in New York is a definite advantage, because the city's diverse music scene attracts so many music lovers.

Now that Topaz has heightened its profile, Schlachter is actively looking for new projects. In addition to releasing DJ compilations such as Nokturnel Mix Sessions Featuring OS/2, Platipus Presents the Evolution of Trance, and Stuck on Earth Presents Reespect, the label is seeking music by innovative artists with an original sound. Schlachter says he listens to everything that comes through the mail, though admittedly, it “isn't very much right now.”

Like many of his contemporaries, Schlachter is amazed at certain artists' immaturity. He feels the biggest mistake made by potential artists who submit material to his label is “thinking they are stars before they have even sold a record — not that selling records entitles you to become an ass.”

Topaz is actively looking for new material, but be warned: presentation is important. Schlachter asks DJs or musicians submitting material to send a well-recorded CD complete with track listings, contact information, and credits. He would also like a simple biography, photo, and cover letter. “Having a professional-looking package will increase your chances of being taken seriously,” he says.

Send material to: Topaz Records; 110 W. 40th St., Suite 1004, New York, NY 10018; tel. (212) 253-9662; e-mail topazrec@aol.com.
