LABEL LINK

Feb 1, 2001 12:00 PM, By Dave Longo

Aspiring underground hip-hop artists in Southern California would have to try pretty hard to find a record label that gives them more personal attention and service than Freckle Face Rekords. The L.A.-based company provides just about everything an artist needs to make a record happen, including engineers and producers, a fully equipped digital studio, a distribution network, street-team promotion, and live-event bookings. The label even boasts DJ Switch, an in-house DJ who lends his turntable skills to many Freckle Face releases.

But this attention to detail isn't so surprising when you consider the staff's extensive experience in the music industry and as producers and performers themselves. Chief executive officer Eugenia Owens, who oversees the label's operations, learned many tricks of the trade while handling contracts and legal business for major record companies. Freckle Face Rekords' in-house producers, Big Mixx Mike and X-Ray, each have more than 20 years of experience in the music business; Mike's notable projects include producing tracks for Ruthless Records, Lonzo Land, and EMI recording artist Jimi Titus.

Hip-hop is the label's main focus, but Freckle Face also puts out records by reggae and R&B artists. Its current roster of artists includes the hip-hop group R718; rappers Khal'il, Pleasure, and Raj; reggae singer Stevie G.; and R&B solo artist Kimberly Diane. Owens regularly promotes showcase events in the L.A. area for Freckle Face artists, and the label supports the neighborhood by sponsoring community events and booking its acts at charity fund-raisers.

“Everything we're involved with has a positive vibe,” says Owens. “We've built a strong grassroots following for our artists on a local level, so we like to give something back to the community that's supported us.”

Although the label has its hands pretty full with current productions and releases, it is always on the lookout for new artists and strong material. Freckle Face prefers to receive finished-sounding, well-mastered recordings on CD or DAT, accompanied by photographs and brief background biographies.
