Style: Hip-hop and affiliated music
Established: In New York in March 2001 as an extension of the Fat Beats retail store and distribution service founded by Joseph Abajian in 1994 and 1996, respectively.
Artists: Atmosphere, Ed OG and Pete Rock, J-Live, J-Zone, Lord Finesse, OneBelow, Soul Position, Starving Artists Crew, Triple Threat DJs
Essential Listening: Atmosphere, God Loves Ugly (2002); J-Zone, Pimps Don't Pay Taxes (2002); Various Artists, Fat Beats, Vol. 3 (2003)
Manifesto: “We're trying to keep a balance in the hip-hop world between party music and conscience music,” Abajian says.
A&R Philosophy: “We're looking for artists who can give something new to the hip-hop community,” Abajian continues. “So far, Atmosphere has really taken off. We're hoping J-Zone and OneBelow can do some decent numbers. I look for a sound that's not out there. What keeps us apart is that we do good deals. It's basic: If you sell, you make more money, and the more you sell, the more you make. We have a solid marketing campaign that we do for all of our artists. The rest is up to them. And we do accept demos.”
Upcoming: Look out for new releases from Ed OG and Pete Rock, OneBelow and Roc Raida, as well as an upcoming Fat Beats tour.
