EJ MIDI TURNTABLE
MIDI TURNTABLE SYSTEM
If tools for DJs keep getting more and more futuristic, then the latest oddity from EJ Enterprises blasts the market into something like the year 2099. Suitably, the EJ MIDI Turntable ($749) was recently used by Blue Man Group to develop a video featured in the Terminator 3 movie. The EJ MIDI, an optical turntable system, allows you to retrofit any existing turntable into a music-video playing machine via MIDI. You can then scratch, pitch-adjust, loop and play your videos with reckless abandon. Perfect for creative DJs, VJs, electronic musicians and video editors, the patent-pending Optical Vinyl and Cartridge fits onto any existing turntable in seconds and transforms all moves into standard MIDI messages while eliminating “needle” skipping. With the bundled Scratch TV LE software (compatible with Mac OS X and Windows), you can scratch and beat-match any QuickTime media. And with a timing accuracy as precise as .01 milliseconds, EJ MIDI Turntables might just silence the common VJ complaint that pitch-adjustable video technology “just isn't there yet.” Turntable techniques — such as needle dropping, beat juggling, transforming and more — are made possible with a single key press.

AUDIO-TECHNICA ATH-M20
CLOSED-BACK STUDIO HEADPHONES
For a little over 40 years, Audio-Technica has been manufacturing almost exclusively audiophile-quality gear. Much of that effort has been in the designing and manufacturing of microphones and — you guessed it — headphones. The newest addition to the A-T family is the affordable ATH-M20 ($69) closed-back dynamic monitor phones. Large 40mm drivers are poised to deliver thick bass response and extended high end while the closed-back, circum-aural design provides excellent isolation from outside noise. The frequency-response rating is 30 Hz to 20 kHz, covering nearly all of the audible range. The M20s use neodymium magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils to preserve high sound quality, as well as have a sensitivity rating of 98 dB. The ultralong 10-foot coiled cable is an essential ingredient for DJs and useful for studio people, too. The ATH-M20s come with a standard ⅛-inch (3.5 mm) stereo miniplug connector, and a snap-on ¼-inch (6.3 mm) adapter is included.

PVDJ ROTOMIX
DJ MIXER
PVDJ, a division of Peavey Electronics, has unveiled its newest rotary-knob DJ mixer, the Rotomix (price TBA). Aimed at installations in clubs and restaurants, Rotomix is a pro-quality, 6-channel mixer that is modular in design. Like on high-end recording consoles, each channel has its own independent circuitry, thus reducing interference between channels for the clearest sound possible. PVDJ enlisted the help of top pro DJs and sound engineers to design the Rotomix, resulting in a mixer with quality components such as aluminum rotary knobs, a high-performance preamp section, a high dynamics threshold on the inputs and a rugged metal chassis. The input section features six fully configurable stereo channels, including phono, line, balanced line and mic connectors. The mixer's outputs can handle even the most complex connections; in addition to the stereo mains, there are two zones (A and B), and Rotomix boasts triple stereo outputs (one balanced, two unbalanced) for each zone. Each of the six channels features 3-band EQ with soft-boost and frequency-kill effects, and all channels are assignable to zones A and B, as well as to the main output.
