AKG K 271

STUDIO HEADPHONES

AKG has long boasted some the finest headphone technology around, and the new K 271 ($249) headphone model is no exception. The K 271s borrow from their pristine-sounding older siblings, the K 270s, yet are much lighter and have a unique feature: They switch off automatically when taken off your head. The K 271's closed-back, circumaural earphones provide maximum attenuation of signal spillage, making them ideal for recording studios — especially for vocal recordings. They clock in with a frequency range of 16 Hz to 28 kHz and a sensitivity rating of 91 dB. A cool feature of the K 271s is their detachable cable with mini-XLR connector. The cable itself is 10 feet long, and the connector is a gold-plated stereo minijack with a gold-plated ⅛-inch — to — ¼-inch screw-on adapter. The impedance is rated at 55 ohms, and the phones weigh in at a scant 8.5 ounces.

AUDIO-TECHNICA AT-PL120

PROFESSIONAL TURNTABLE

Audio-Technica — long known for its audiophile-quality microphones, headphones and phono cartridges — bursts onto the DJ scene with the AT-PL120 ($399.95) direct-drive, high-torque turntable. It contains many of the standard items you would expect from a professional mixing turntable: an S-shape tonearm with adjustable counterweight and antiskate adjustment, quartz-controlled pitch lock, a cast-aluminum record platter and ±20 percent pitch-adjustment range. The tonearm has height adjustment with a lock and features hydraulic lift action. The classic stroboscopic platter-speed indicator and pop-up stylus target light are present for nightclub use. The AT-PL120 has some unique features, too: 33, 45 and 78 rpm speeds; a selectable internal phono preamp; forward and reverse play; a start/stop button with remote start/stop control input; a receptacle for an extra headshell; and adjustable feet for leveling the chassis on uneven surfaces. The package includes a cartridge, A-T's own professional ATP-2.

PIONEER DJM-707

DJ MIXER

The latest high-end 2-channel mixer offered by Pioneer, the DJM-707 ($899), features two stereo line inputs, two switchable phono/line inputs, one XLR ¼-inch combo mic input, ¼-inch stereo send/return jacks for external effects and stereo session inputs/outputs with a separate level control. Each channel boasts a 3-band equalizer (high, mid and low, — 26 to +6 dB) with an EQ on/off switch. The mic input features its own 2-band EQ, along with a dedicated level control and send. The non-contact crossfader is packed with goodies such as an independently adjustable crossfader curve for each channel, an adjustable crossfader lag and adjustable crossfader tension. There are transform switches, and the crossfader can be switched to reverse, as well. The top panel has fader-start buttons for each channel, and the rear panel includes two fader-start inputs. The DJM-707 sports headphone-monitor auditioning and a reinforced headphone jack on the front panel. The master outs are on both RCA and professional XLR connectors.
