TURBOSOUND TQ-308SP

Working DJs who bump the clubs but still like to rock a block party should check out the Turbosound QLight series TQ-308SP ($1,862) loudspeaker when they need to bring the noise. At a mere 33 pounds, it is the most portable of the QLight series. The self-powered, 2-channel speaker performs equally at either horizontal or vertical positions and is suitable for fixed installations, as well. The TQ-308SP utilizes an 8-inch low-frequency driver providing 300W (350 max) and a 1-inch high-frequency compression driver outputting 50W (65 max). Its frequency response is 68 Hz to 20 kHz. Two multipin plugs and four bolts attach the integrated modular amplifier, which can be removed easily for servicing. This amp also includes active filters and two independent output limiters with gain control and status LEDs. A main on/off switch, gain control and male and female XLR connectors adorn the back panel. The TQ-308SP's construction features birch plywood with black or TurboBlue textured paint.

To infuse your sounds with a pleasant warm texture, it takes a tube, baby. As any musical scenario can benefit from a tube-based preamp, Presonus designed the single-channel TubePre ($299.95) as a mic preamp or instrument direct box for studio and live use. The TubePre uses a 12AX7 vacuum-tube circuit for a stable signal path. Its goal is to boost the desirable signal without increasing unwanted background noise. The frequency range is 10 Hz to 80 kHz, and the signal-to-noise ratio tops out at 90 dB. Results can range from a transparent cleaning of the signal to a saturated, colored tube effect. TubePre makes full use of its limited ⅓-rackspace front panel. A rotary knob attenuates gain and tube drive. Four illuminated switches activate 48V phantom power, a 20dB pad for high-level signals and an 80Hz “rumble filter” to eliminate bass swell, as well as insert phase reverse. The back panel houses a balanced XLR input and output in addition to an unbalanced ¼-inch input and output. For rackmounting, the TubePre fits in a universal rack tray.

NUMARK WS 32, WM 200
PERFORMANCE MICROPHONES
Some DJs just can't keep their mouths shut, and Numark has two new low-cost mics for all those loquacious jocks. The WS 32 ($132) is a wireless microphone with an included ¼-inch mic cable for the base unit. It has a frequency response of 50 Hz to 18 kHz, built-in noise reduction and a silent on/off switch. The WM 200 ($30) sticks to the wired world and has a frequency response of 50 Hz to 18 kHz. It includes a 20-foot shielded cable and a carrying case. Numark constructed both mics in durable die-cast alloy bodies with steel mesh capsule housing.
