Termanology, Politics as Usual (Nature Sounds/ST)

Oct 14, 2008 5:02 PM

The East is in the house
With Politics as Usual, Lawrence, Mass. mixtape sensation Termanology introduces himself as an undeniably nimble hip-hop act. Capable of crafting boom-bap-backed braggadocio with DJ Premier ("Watch How It Go Down"), as well as somber street-wise songs with Pete Rock ("We Killin' Ourselves"), this MC hardly limits himself to one groove. Amid his dexterity, Term can reach too far like on the Nottz-produced "Please Don't Go"—a blatant attempt at a radio hit with a weak vocoder chorus. Thankfully these missteps are rare, making this LP a mostly Grade-A set of East Coast tracks.—Max Herman [4 out of 5 stars]
