CD Review: Statik Selektah, Stick 2 the Script (Showoff/Brick)

Nov 3, 2008 6:22 PM

Hip-hop without pretense
True to the title of Statik Selektah's second LP, the Brooklyn-based DJ/producer isn't trying to reinvent hip-hop with Stick 2 the Script. Instead, Statik picks up where he left off with his 2007 debut and shoots for a timeless, street-ready sound with a boast-worthy roster of MCs on hand. But great guests or not, this album bumps. Statik's ear for fresh loops and crisp drums is evident from the Middle Eastern-tinged "Get Out the Way" (with Bun B and Cory Mo) to the Termanology-assisted, gospel-inspired "Church." Consider this one another quality producer album for '08.—Max Herman [4 out of 5 stars]
