CD Review: Various Artists, Sample and Hold (Wichita)

Sep 8, 2008 7:28 PM

Monkey see, monkey redo
Remix albums are mixed bags by definition, and this reworking of Simian Mobile Disco's economical-yet-massive Attack Decay Sustain Release is no different. The sustained intensity of the original material makes it easy to transpose, but often something is lost in translation. Cosmo Vitelli gives the double-dutch breakdown of "Hotdog" a sexy, Moroder-esque makeover with plucked guitars. Pinch's dubstep interpretation of the metallic R&B of "I Believe" inverts the source, expunging flashy pop lyrics and replacing them with a mysterious slow boil of bass. Shit Robot's "It's the Beat" swaps synth squiggles for Latin percussion but drags things out too much.—Patrick Sisson [3 out of 5 stars]
