RATATAT, LP3 (XL)

Jul 2, 2008 6:41 PM

Good things come in threes
Instrumental-dealing New Yorkers Ratatat take to their harpsichords and load up on hand-drum patterns for LP3, which is...wait for it...their third LP. The duo whoops Crystal Castles at their own game with heaping portions of video-game sonics on "Mirando" and "Shempi," but the glitzy and textured "Falcon Jab" reveals an affinity for belly dancers and crystal balls as backward swirls wrap 'round loads of autoharp. "Dura's" petite film music mystifies too, and when the solo during "Mumtaz Khan" screams "Hotel California," colorful flourishes nearby overpower it before nausea sets in. Whew.—Dominic Umile [3.5 out of 5 stars]
