CD Review: Morgan Geist, Double Night Time (Environ)

'80s working overtime
From an electro-tinged homage and classic "Detroit" techno to the dubby electronic funk of "City of Smoke and Flame," Geist's Double Night Time is a valentine to '80s sonic aesthetics. Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys sings on most of the tracks, and his soft-spoken delivery and literary narrative gives the album a novelistic approach, like a well-written coming-of-age tale. Greenspan casts a long shadow, but Geist's soft, whispery proto-house beats keep center stage. With its magical synth arrangements and melancholy bass effects, Double Night Time expresses in sound what can only be hinted at in words.—Mosi Reeves [4.5 out of 5 stars]
