DJ Muggs & Planet Asia, Pain Language (Gold Dust Media)
Oct 17, 2008 2:38 PM
West Coast straight talk
In bringing back head cracks and high drama, Muggs shows that he'll never forget how to dispatch his foreboding bluster. Should he sound superfly/superheroic on "That's What It Is" and "Lions in the Forest," it's done in the shadow of an almost unholy anxiety. With his Cali Agent spearing unsentimental, get-at-me rhymes and brushing chips off his shoulder, "Pain Language" never loses focus on the job in hand. It's not a matchup to give hip-hop the overhaul it needs; instead, it's Cali coming correct, shoring up the scene's excesses by dogged, dead-eyed means.—Matt Oliver [3.5 out of 5 stars]
